Migrating but to new user account - permissions problems?

Hi guys,
I have a new iMac, and want to move all my old files (not apps - yet) to my new machine.
I'd like to start fresh as much as possible and would like to split my old files and email accounts into three separate accounts on the new machine - Home account / Business account & the wife's Business account!
By copying the relevant mail folders from the old "home" account to a new account on the new machine, I know I'm going to have permissions problems. And it'll be the same I guess for all the other docs and files which will be moved to the other accounts?
How do I get around this?
Thanks for any advice or help!
Steve

You can try to batch change permissions.

  • Migrated files and New User Account

    Hello,
New Mac user here.  I successfully migrated all the content from my old PC onto my Mac Mini and it was put into a new user account.  I'd like to transfer this content into the Admin account and delete the added user.  What's the best way to go about doing this?  Thanks so much!

Use Quicktime Player version 7 instead of Quicktime 10.
Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl923
Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".

  • User Accounts Permissions Problem!

    Hi,
Have a new MacBook here with 2 user accounts on it. Both users are administrators. I tried copying a folder of files from the User A's desktop into the Drop Box of User B. That went fine. But when I logged out of User A's account and into User B's, User B could open the folder and files but couldn't change/write to them.
So, I tried changing the permissions of User B's home folder, by clicking Get Info. User B's home folder AND enclosed items are now:
    User A - Read & Write
    User B - Read & Write
    everyone - Read only
This solved the problem of modifying that folder and files that came from User A's account. However, now some new problems have emerged. For example, User B now can't trash widgets from their dashboard.
Have I done the wrong thing? What are you supposed to do so that BOTH users on the same computer automatically have the permission to read and write to files and folders they exchange with each other?

Open up a Terminal and type "ls -l /Users/" (without the quotation marks; the stroke means "ell" not "I" as in "I think, therefore I am"). The output should be a list containig a line similar to
    drwx------+ 31 <your user name> staff 1054 17 Mai 08:54 <your user name>
The important part is "drwx------" at the beginning. It informs you that it's a directory (d) and that the owner has (r)ead-, (w)rite- and e(x)ecute-access (the last meaning that you can change to that directory in a terminal using the cd command). The following lines indicate that neither the group "staff" nor anyone else has rwx-access. To grant full access to everybody the line would have to read "drwxrwxrwx". To change permissions in the terminal you can use the command chmod (for syntax help type "man chmod"). Let me know if that solved your question.

  • New User Account, scanner problems

Set up a new account on our eMac for a new employee. Her account is the only other account besides mine (Administrator). Our Cannon CanoScan N676U scanner is not communicating with new user's account. Launch Photoshop, it loads, click File, Import, Canoscan 7.0.1X, and receive error message that cannot communicate with scanner, scanner may be unplugged, check connection. I log into my administrator account and no problems. I've deleted her account, set-up a new one (giving her administrator rights) and the same issue occurs.
I've been in contact with Cannon, and have verified and repaired Disk Permissions. I don't know what to do? PLEASE HELP!!!!!

  • HT3224 Migration created a new user account on my new MacBook, increasing the space used. Any solution?

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro. Using the migration assistant, I transfered my old backed up (using the Time Machine) things to the new MacBook Pro. It  created another user account with the old Administrator ID. This about doubled the space usage on my machine and sort of slowed down the machine. There are no Apple Stores in my area and the machine was brought from the UK. So how do I solve the space problem?

Thanks Neil. What I did before asking the question was simslar to what you suggested. I logged in with the new account, went to the Users&Groups pane, clicked on the other sccount and asked to delete. Which it did. With the older MacBook Pro and under Disk Utilities the space used was about 160 GB. With the new MacBook Pro and after the delete, the Disk Utility is giving me used space as 322.22GB (a difference of 150 GB all things considered). That I think was a substacial increase and I want to figure out why. May be I did something wrong?
Your help is very much appreciated.

  • Migration Assistant created new user account & can't delete it

Hi - I'm a new Mac user (MacBook Pro). I seem to have an extra account and am not sure why. Here's what happened:
I setup my MacBook Pro and did not run Migration Assistant at that time. I later ran Migration Assistant to migrate PC files to the MacBook. A second account was created after the migration. All my PC content is in the second account. None in the original account. When I look at the Users & Groups in System Preferences, I see that both accounts are Admin accounts.
I do not want the original account that was created for me on the MacBook Pro before I trasnferred any of my PC files over.  I just want to keep the account that was created to house all my PC files when they were migrated over.  However I cannot migrate that original account - the " - " is just greyed out.
Please can someone advise how I delete it.  I do not want two admin user acconts - just the onen with all my PC files in.
I realise I should have done the PC transfer at start up using "set up assistant" but for whatever reasons I chose to delay it by a day or so and hence used Windows Migration Assistant.
Please tell me how I can delete the surplus user account created for me originally when I used the Mac for the first time.
Thanks in advance for all feedback and advice.  This is my first Mac after 20 years of Windows, so big step for me and still learning!  So easy to understand instructions please would be bonus
    thanks all

Unfortunately I see that no one has been able to help me with this . . . so instead of addressing the question above. can someone please tell me how to reset my Mac to "factory settings", ie how it was the day I bought it and before I switched it on for the first time.  Delete everything on there now. That way I will do set up properly and transfer data from my PC first of all instead of revisiting it.
Please can someone tell me how to do this
    Many thanks

  • Try resetting camera error-New user account works

I went to capture using a Sony DSR-11 in Premiere and got this error. I have recently (over three months ago) have only been using a JVC HD-100 camera in Premiere Pro to capture with no problems. After many tries, I researched Adobe and went through there correction method with multiple steps for correction. In the end, when I created a new user in Windows and logged into the new user, Premiere Pro sees the deck with no problem. I then went by there steps and switched back to my log-in and it fails giving me the same error.
So this has to be a DV codec, registry type of issue. I tried using Graphedit as mentioned in one of the steps, to find the problem dll but can't locate it. I also did the delete the 1394 device in one of the suggested steps and Windows re-installed the 1394 driver but it did not fix the problem. Any ideas on what/where to look? I would really hate to switch back and forth between user accounts just to capture and I would hate even more to migrate to the new user account. Thanks in advance, Jose Burgos
    www.burgosfx.com

    Windows XP Pro SP3.
It works when I create a new user so it's not the deck. I somehow have activated another DV capture dll when I installed another software, from what I read from the Adobe help section. Adobe suggest creating a new user and testing. If that works, which it does, then try back in the original and if that does not work, migrate to the new user. I am trying very hard not to migrate.

  • OS Lion - Difference image quality in EyeTV with new user account?

    Hi Everyone,
My computer has been crashing ever since installing Lion, mainly on the Mail app it appears, so I created a new user account and have set that up to use.
I have an Elgato Eye TV Hybrid with EyeTv for watching TV. The image settings are the same on both user accounts, but the new user account is extremely grainy. Any ideas about why it would be different on multiple accounts?

    pod meister,
quite as yr office person says. It would be wrong to remove all the apps. I would not be sure what ElGato can mean when they say the test user has no apps!. Elgato (?) will need to use some apps for it's normal operation, and the more general user functions will as well. You would msee in yr 'Parentalo controls, in sys prefs pane that there are 'helper apps' that you can allow or not to any controlled user. So there are helper apps.
You can 'turn off' lots of system extensions with a special boot up but won't Elgato need some of them? It is after all the operation of Elgato that you want to test.
The usual dodgy 'apps' are starup items like so called haxies which moderate certain basic system operations. You could start by disabling the.
You might care to consider that Elagto is shoveling the blame onto 'the rest of the world' saying it 'is something else',but I may be wrong.

If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium problem creating new user account

I am unable to create a new user account on my Windows 7 Home Premium computer. I have 3 accounts on it already, two are adminstrators, and just trying to add a fourth one (standard user).
I go to User Accounts, click Create new account, give it a name, keep Standard user checked, and press Create Account. The account appears to get created and shows up on the User Accounts screen, though it shows that it is password protected already, even
though I didn't have an opportunity to give it a password yet. I can manage that new user account and delete the password, and it then shows up on User Accounts as not having a password.
When I try to log on as that user from the main logon screen, it prompts me for the password (if I have specified one), but it doesn't accept the password (I've tried defining and using various ones), and I get the message "The user name or password is incorrect".
If I don't define a password for that account, when I click on the account button to logon, I get that same error message immediately.
I also noticed that C:\Users doesn't include the new user account folder there. Don't know if that should've been created at this point before logging on for the first time. I also noticed that there's a "Default User" folder that has a lock on the folder
icon, and I'm not able to open that folder (says it's invalid). There is a "Default" folder there with some content in it and I am able to view it. Don't know if either of these folders act as templates for new users.
At some point months ago I did have a profile problem with one of the existing accounts, and had to follow some suggestions on repairing that user profile. Don't know if that perhaps has complicated things. The 3 existing user accounts are working fine.
Any tips on what I can try to get a new account established?
    Thanks, Chuck

I agree with the same problem and the answer below did not work either.  I tried changing permissions to Users directory and that did not work either.  I even tried creating the directory name of user I wanted to install and that was recognized and
being used, but will not start a user directory for new user.

  • Transferred library to new user account but not able to download...

I transfered my existing library from the account I was originally using to my own new account following the directions that Apple provides http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203 however now I'm noticing that I cannot download music, apps, etc. in Itunes in the new user account, but still can when I sign into the old user account.  Both user accounts use the same AppleID in Itunes.  I cannot delete the old user account.  I'm assuming that this probably be solved under systems preferences, but I'm not sure what to do.  Thank you!!
FYI - I have the latest updated Itunes.

    bsd8896 wrote:
I was already able to tranfer my Music Media
Don't transfer just the music media.
The problem I am having is that I cannot download music, apps, files in ITunes when in the new user account.  I am assuming this is because I have always downloaded in the old user account.  I assuming something under the system pref in Itunes will fix this...just not sure how?
    What happens?
How do you know you cannot download anythibng? Any messages/errors?
    Try this...
    Quit iTunes.
Transfer the entire /Music/iTunes folder from old user to /Users/Shared/ folder.
Open a Finder window and go to /Users/Shared/.
Select the ITunes folder, right click > get info.
Sroll to Sharing & Permissions and set Everyone to Read/Write.
Click the Gear icon and click Apply to Enclosed items.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select the /Users/Shared/iTunes/ folder.

  • Migrating to new user account: must chown old account's files- I think

Is there a way to selectively chown the files/folders owned by a particular user, while leaving other files/folders untouched? I'm in the process of migrating to a fresh user account on my machine. I copied what I need from the old user's home directory and chowned it recursively, as described on an Apple support page. The support page makes no mention of chowning files/folders elsewhere on the machine, but I've found plenty of stuff in other locations that are owned by the old user:
    /Applications (lots of stuff)
    /Library (lots of stuff)
    /private/var/tmp (a small lot)
    /private/var/vm/app_profile/ (2 files)
    /usr/local/clamXav/ (1 easily replaceable file)
    /usr/local/lib/codec/ (4 files/folders)
I'm planning to delete the old user once I'm confident that everything is working, and I'm not sure what would happen if some critical files are owned by a deleted user. The old user was an admin account, if that matters. Oh, and I'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a PPC mac, if that matters.
    Any help appreciated

Niel- that article you linked to is great. Lots of helpful info that's relevant to my situation. Thanks!
After reading the article and comments, I'm a little unsure whether to use "find -L" or just "find" (or "find -P") when finding files that need chowning. It sounds like "find -L" would include symlinks that point to files/folders owned by the old user, regardless of who owns the symlink itself, whereas "find -P" would only include symlinks that are themselves owned by the old user. I think "-P" is what I need (the man page says the -P behavior is the default, so I guess I just need "find" by itself). Someone commented about this, and the article's author acknowledged some of their other suggestions, but not this one. ?
I think if I was going to change ownership of all the old user's files, I'd need to run the following commands on a few directories (/Applications, /Library, etc.):
         find $dir -user $olduser -exec chown -h $newuser {} \;
         find $dir -group $olduser -exec chgrp -h $newuser {} \;
I'd also have to look for filenames that end in the old user's uid, with something like
         find / -name "*501"
         or
         find -L / -name "*501"
However, it occured to me that while there may be files I want that are owned by the old user, there are probably also files I don't want to migrate over, like if the system's already created equivalent files for the new user and I'd be overwriting something that could cause problems. I'm going in circles
At this point I think I'd better make such changes selectively when problems crop up that I think could be solved by doing so, rather than make system-wide changes in one fell swoop. I want to fix small problems, not make big ones.

  • Application crashes, but not in new user account. How to fix?

Like many others on the forum, I have experienced frequent crashes in SL in Mail, Safari, Powerpoint, and other applications, particularly when adding an attachment to an email message or inserting an image file in a presentation slide. Did all the usual maintenance things such as verifying and repairing permissions, reinstalling SL, trashing virus protection apps, etc. Crashes persisted. However, I created a new user account and when working in that account the crashes do not occur.
What does this suggest about the nature of the problem and how do I resolve it, preferably without migrating all my files over to the new user account.
    Many thanks.

Open Directory Utility. You will find it in Applications/Utilities.
Click the lock to make changes and enter your admin password.
Go to the menu bar: Edit > Enable root user.
Follow the instuctions to create the System Administrator (Root) user.
Do not use the same password that a regular user already has. Do not use a trivial password.
    Log out the current user.
In the log in window, enter root as the user name.
Enter the password that you just created.
You now have access to all User accounts, folders and files. Move the files you need from the old account to the working one. For example move the contents of your old Documents folder to the new Documents folder. This is easiest if you open two Finder windows and place them side by side. repeat this for the other folders in your old user space with one exception. *Do not* copy the contents of the Library folder.
There are a couple of things in the Library folder that you probably do want. To retrieve your email, copy the contents of the Mail folder. If you have installed fonts in your user space copy those too.
Let your new Library manage itself from then on. Your apps will place preference files etc in the appropriate folders as they are launched.
You should also give the working account admin priviliges. (System Preferences > Accounts)
Be very careful whilst logged in as root. The main Library and System folders are no longer protected and nothing requires a further password entry. Do what you need to do and get out of there.
When you are finished log back in to the working account and open Directory Utility once more.
Go to Edit > Disable root user.
Keep the old user account on the drive for a while until you are sure everything is working correctly and nothing is missing.

  • How do I create a new user account and migrate my data to it?

I have problem with Adobe Bridge crashing when I exit Camera Raw.  I was advised by my local apple service store to create a new user account and test Bridge using the new account.  It works fine.  So what do I do now?  I don't know what in my account is causing the conflict but assume that the solution might be e newly setup user.

Checking the behaviour in another user account is a TEST, not a solution! You don't need to move everything over. Otherwise, every time you get a user account problem, you'll keep moving to a new user account again and again.
If the problem does not occur in a new user account, then the cause is something IN your user account. This is usually a Preference file. Adobe Bridge seems to crash a lot, and it can usually be fixed by deleting the Bridge folder in <user>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/
You can also try deleting the Bridge preference file, which will be in <user>/Library/Preferences, and called com.adobe.bridge5.plist (or similar).
If that doesn't work, you can test removing a whole bunch of the various Adobe files in those folders. You can always put them back if they don't change anything. And you've got a backup, haven't you? ;-)
