Migrating, Fresh Install, or Best Approach?

I'm currently running Mountain Lion on this late 2008 MBP. For the past couple years it's had issues where it goes off into never never land and I believe it's from corrupt system files or something. Sometimes it's different programs that cause the issue like if I open Preview, Text-Edit, etc. The computer will work fine unless I open one of them and then it just starts running totally sluggish and getting stuck. Closing the programs doesn't fix the issue. I'll have to restart and avoid those programs as long as I can. I've also noticed normal image files of mine and files I created going corrupt at times for no reason. I've tried every thing in the book, upgraded operating systems, run repairs, purchased new HD etc. Nothing fixes it.
So, I'm finally upgrading to Yosemite and figure now it's the time... once and for all... to fix the issue by doing the first complete erase of the OS and fresh install after all these years. So right now I'm cloning the drive to an external via Data Rescue 3. Once that is complete then what is the best approach here to be sure none of any corrupt system code or anything makes it over so that it's like I have a brand new MBP (just that's really old...LOL)?
I'm thinking the migration option from the external backup clone I'm making would be best but with that I'm not sure how it installs the old programs if you chose to have it copy the apps over. Won't it copy the apps code from this install? If that's the case it sounds like migration might be a bad choice for me as it's risking possible corrupt code back in? At the same time I want my settings, images, passwords, email, iPhone backups, music, etc. So won't it be really difficult if I don't use the migration choice or is it simple to copy that stuff over? Please advise on the best and easiest way for me to get what I need onto this computer but without letting any possible old corrupt code in...
Thanks!

hi
I recently purchased the latest mountain Lion.
i was wondering what was the best thing to do.
A complete fresh install
or just upgrading from the previous OSX Lion.
I have 3 macs :
- iMac 27" (2009)
- Mac Mini (2010)
- MacBook Pro 13" (2011)
The 3 of them came with with Snow Leopard.
And I did an upgrade to Lion, shortly after it was relased.
If we upgrade :
- does leave unnecessary files
- is there a difference in speed and hard-disk space
or does it manage it all very well
Thanks for the info
maybe some links would be welcome that give an in-depth explanation about that
There is some house-keeping that you need to do before/after upgrading to Mountain Lion.
For installed, third-party applications (and device drivers where indicated), does the vendor offer latest OS X Mountain Lion support. Drivers that worked in Snow Leopard or Lion, may not work well in Mountain Lion without upgrades.
You may have to re-install some third-party applications that have system dependencies that have changed in Mountain Lion.
You may have to update your Printer preferences if printers do not work after the upgrade.
You should count on a minimum of 4GB of memory (8GB is better) in each Mac.
Although the upgrade process will not touch /Users, it is sound due diligence to backup user data on all these Macs beforehand.
Upgrading is simpler, multiple Mountain Lion downloads not withstanding. If these Macs have been through prior OS X updates, they may not operate as fast as a full, clean install would deliver. If you want to do a full, clean install, download the free Lion Diskmaker. It will automatically build a bootable, USB installer for Mountain Lion from your first ML purchase and download. I used it to make a clean install on my SSD. Works perfectly.

  • Migrate, restore from Time Machine or fresh install

    Folks
Getting an MBP today and migrating from MBA. Should I fresh install, use the migrate tool or restore from Time Machine?

You are going to get several answers here depending on users' opinion and experiences. My own view, having done the Time Machine backup as demo in a class, is that, if you have the time and all the settings written down, the best way is to start from scratch. Indeed, the last two Macs I bought, I even installed the OS myself, despite them being out of the box.
Having written that, I do find Time Machine a useful facility and it is possible to selectively bring the data back, which is really quite useful with a new machine. This would be a great tool in the case of a stolen computer or if a hard disk had crashed and it was necessary to get up and running quickly. As a note, I still found that with the TM restore, certain parts (such as Mailboxes and some other network related security stuff) still needed setting up again.
I did use the migrate tool once and was not over-convinced although I understand it has been updated. Someone else should offer an opinion on that.
If time is of the essence, go for the TM or Migrate tool. If you want a more stable and secure environment (perhaps that backup could bring over a problem), go from scratch with a selective backup.

  • Use migration assistant to move Logic 8 from SL to ML or fresh install?

I've got the first Intel MBP, and I've upgraded to a new mac mini. The old MBP has LP 802. Should I use Migration Assistant to transfer my Application folder to the new machine or install Rosetta and do a fresh install?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

The community members have different approaches, but one consensus is that installing Rosetta from the SL instal disc and then trying to install LP 8 works
Rosetta is an unnatural addition to Lion or Mt. Lion and installing it can have serious consequences not initially anticipated later on; see this thread (start with the OP's first post):
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21335549#21335549
On the other hand, installing from Terminal does not have any "side-effects" so long as the user knows how to use Terminal, such as you do.
If you decide to install Rosetta, you do so at your own risk!
I do not understand your reference to "LP 802"
As to Migration Assistant, what OS X flavor is installed on your first Intel MBP and on your new mac Mini (which you reference to ML, so I assume it is Mt. Lion but please confirm)?

  • Migration to a fresh install?

I was away from a computer for the better part of a year and now it is extreemly out of date and everyting seems broken(including pacamn). I'm currently leaning towards just doing a fresh install, but waanted to know what options I had for aiding the migration of my old setup (installed programs, configurations, etc).

Definitely agree with oboedad55 on this one.  Trying to get your current build updated with all of the changes that has taken place over the last year is futile.
Not sure of your configuration but if HOME is on it's own partition, I would back that up and do the fresh install.
This link will walk you through how to perform the new install that is already configured with systemd and grub2.

Unfortunately, Safari cannot be updated past 5.1.10 on a Mac running v10.6.8.
So, the options are to upgrade to a newer OS X or use Firefox or  Chrome.

See if your Mac can run v10.9 Mavericks >  OS X Mavericks: System Requirements
If so, you can download and install Mavericks for free from the App Store.

EBS showing lots of issues ,and requirement is to install fresh EBS 12.1.3 and move all previous EBS data & setup to the freshly installed.
As it seems EBS 12.1.3 was not installed properly which led to so many issues.my questions is.
1)is this possible to install fresh EBS 12.1.3 and then move previous data & setup to this one.
    is this recommendable?
if yes?  how? Kindly give me a detail guidance
2)how to do a health checkup of currently installed EBS 12.1.3.
I mean if I can show them their is nothing wrong with installation. Then we need to think over other solutions.

what kinda of issues ? are they functional setup issue ? or customization issue?
if yes why would you move those setup when you already have issues on that...

  • What would be best approach to migrate millions of records from on premise SQL server to Azure SQL DB?

    Team,
In our project, we have a requirement of data migration. We have following scenario and I really appreciate any suggestion from you all on implementation part of it.
    Scenario:
We have millions of records to be migrated to destination SQL database after some transformation.
The source SQL server is on premise in partners domain and destination server is in Azure.
Can you please suggest what would be best approach to do so.
    thanks,
    Bishnu
    Bishnupriya Pradhan

You can use SSIS itself for this
Have a batch logic which will identify data batches within source and then include data flow tasks to do the data transfer to Azure. The batch size chosen should be as per buffer meory availability + parallel tasks executing etc.
You can use ODBC or ADO .NET connection to connect to azure.

  • Best approach to migrate from 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.6

    Hi friends.
Actually I have a production database running on Oracle 9.2.0.1 in Suse Linux. I bought a new server and I have to migrate my database from the old one. In this new server I´ll have Oracle 9.2.0.6 and RedHat. What is the best approach to make the migration?
    - By export/import? Will I have problems wiht users/grants/synonyms, etc, since I wont be able to use full import cause the system users?
    - Update de 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.6 and to copy the database to new server?
    - Copy the database to new server and update only the database to 9.2.0.6 by scripts?
    - Anything else??? :)
    Thx in advance.

I'm not sure what you mean by " I wont be able to use full import cause the system users". I can't seem to understand what you're trying to say here.
If you have a relatively small database, exporting and importing is probably the simplest option. You can also restore a backup from the old machine to the new machine and upgrade the new machine in place, use transportable tablespaces, patch the old database and set up the new system as a standby database, etc. There are plenty of options, we'd need more information about how much data we're talking about, what sort of down time window you have, whether you're concerned about speed, administrative complexity, etc.

  • Fresh install of Lion & migration from internal drive

    Hello,
I recently did a fresh install of Lion 10.7.1 from a bootable DMG of Lion 10.7.1 I downloaded from the app store.  Before I installed Lion I used disk utility from the installer to format my system drive in order to get a fresh install.
The installation went fine and I am now booted into 10.7.1.
I am trying to use Migration Assistant to migrate files over from a Time Machine backup that is on a separate internal hard drive in my Mac Pro.  Unfortunatley MA does not recognize the drive as a source.  The hard drive is visible to me in Finder, yet when I dig deep into the structure some of the folders are not accessible to me since I do not have read/write permission.  I had to enable the permission for the drive initially but that does not cascade to the entire contents of the drive.  I enabled root access in attempt to get around this didn't work.
Is my problem one of permissions or what else?
    Thanks!

    Try Lion Community and TimeMachine

Me, and I hope others, clone your system first! keep your drive you have even, as is, you may want or need 10.6.8 still. Format a new drive for Lion instead.
As for what TimeMachine holds and why Setup Assistant on first boot wouldn't import anything.... sorry.

  • Best approach to "migrate" from BEX reports to Webi reports ?

    Hello,
i have read lots of documents regarding best practices on how to built webi reports and universes on top of BW.
But i can't find any document about best approach, not in performance way of thinking but in best way of using reports.
i mean: when end users are coming from bex reports (where they can drill down through hierarhies and use free filters ) to webi reports (where layout is quite beatiful and user can change it easely), this is not the same way of consuming reports.
I come from BO world and are new on reporting on top of BW.
for me webi is good for quite static layout reporting where data is clear and available.of course you can have prompts for interactivy and more accurate reporting.  Drill down is just a functionality but is not the real purpose of the report tool.
So ,according to me there is a gap between both tools (BEX and WEBI) but end users are the same.
So i 'm wondering if you have any feedback for the best approach to build webi reports where end users are coming from bex reporting.
And how to choose between prompts, drill-down (with available filters on top of the window), fold/unfold and input controls or just having diffrent levels of hierarchies in the table/ section/ breaks but without drill down (because if you drill down, report begins weird with diffrent levels) ...?
So , if you have any feedback , advise....
    thanks in advance,

    Hi,
WEBI don't replace BEX reports, is for different audience, in fact BEX is for OLAP reports and analysis.
