Migrating selected data from Sybase 11 to Oracle 8i

We have an application re-written using an Oracle 8i backend and we need to migrate data from Sybase 11.9.2 to Oracle 8i. No triggers or procedures to migrate, and not all the tables or even all the rows in the tables. I have read a lot of posts on this and am not sure if the Workbench or Heterogenous services is the best tool/method. For bulk migration it seems the Workbench might work if we create a view and bcp just the view data in comma delimited then use the SQL Loader to move it to Oracle. As a side question when bcping the view do we want to terminate each line with cr/lf or no line termination. Alternatively, could we use the hetergenous services and some perl scripts to accomplish the same thing using copy and select and throttle it some running in batches?
Lastly, if we'd also like to possibly access the old Sybase data does the new client app need specific coding to utilize this service? Do the two db's need to be the same schema or identical to utilize this product?
Thnks - bc

Sandeep,
Have you used this user which holds the omwb repository before for a migration? When you connected the first itme, did you get a message, that the repository tables did not exist and would you like to create them?
Are you using the connected or disconnected source model load?

  • How to select data from another schema in Oracle-Sqldeveloper?

    Hi,
I open two schemas, assumed schema1 and schema2, in SQL-Developer. In the SQL-Edit Area of schema1 I want to select data from schema2. So I did followings:
    select * from schema2.table1;
But I got error message: 00942. 00000 -  "table or view does not exist"
    What could be the problem?

Correct place for your question is SQL Developer (Not for general SQL/PLSQL questions)

  • Migration of next_identity() from sybase 12 to oracle 10G

    Hi,
What is the oracle equivalent for next_identity() in sybase.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Vinoth Kannan

    Hi Vinoth,
The OMWB does not migrate this function automatically.
next_identity() returns the next value to be used in an indentity column. You pass it the name of the table as a parameter. Example
    T-SQL
    SELECT next_identity(table1)
if table1 does not have an identity column then null is returned, otherwise the next identity value for that table is returned.
Oracle does not have identity columns, so the OMWB will migrate identity columns to a sequence and a trigger. This sequence will named SQ_<IdentityColumnName>.
    So to emulate
    next_indentity(<table_name>)
    you may have to go
    SQ_<IdentityColumnName>.CURRVAL + 1

  • Migration from sybase 11 to Oracle 9i

    Hi,
I have to migrate all db objects (tables structures, table data, triggers,sp) from Sybase 11 to Oracle 9i
There are currently two free tools -
    Migration workbench (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration/workbench/index.html )
    and
    SQL Developer( http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration//workbench/index_sqldev_omwb.html )
    for this purpose.
SQL developer has a provision to convert scripts which I can use for SPs and scripts one @ a time.
Problem is migrating table structures along with data.
from SQL developer I can't connect to sybase thou I provide all the details and from workbench in the online mode I need the sa login which is not possible as the database is live and @ client side.
SQL Loader can be used but will require to make CSV files from each sybase table and hence is time consuming.

    Hi,
Migration Workbench is not available for Sybase database.
As you can see on this website:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/migration/workbench/files/mig_rel10104.html
Only Informix and DB2 database are supoprted now with this product.
With SQL Developer, we only support last versions of Sybase : V12 and V15.
As you don't have any remote access to your client database and no SA login , the best way would be :
==>to get and export from Sybase 11.
==>install a V12 somewhere (on your site , you can download the Sybase V15 )and import the Sybase database
Then SQL developer can migrate quickly your database without any problem.
    I hope it helps you.

  • Migrating table from Sybase 12 to Oracle 10g

    Hi ,
We have a situation where we have to migrate multiple Sybase databases to Oracle10g . These multiple database have same set of tables but different data in these tables on each sybase database ( data differ, based on location or region wise but same table name and structure). We want to migrate all these sybase database to Oracle 10g and in single database, which involves inserting data from multiple tables ( though they exist on different database in sybase) into single Oracle table.
for example if we have a table 'TESTK' that exist on five different sybase database but with different region wise data. I want to bring data from these five tables( Five as they exist in five differet sybase databases) and insert them into a single oracle table 'TESTK' .
Have anybody ever face such scenerio , what are all possible approch please suggest. Once data is inserted into oracle table i need to partitioned this oracle table as well.

It is not quite clear whether you have multiple tables (referencing each other) in multiple sybase databases or either one table or several non connected tables in multiple sybase databases.
In the first case of course your task is harder because you need to keep references and most probably you cannot blindly copy data from db 1, db 2 and unite them because they can have the same id's coming from different sources.
In the second case your task of course is much easier you can simply load all your data in Oracle tables either using some interim tables (if you need to filter out duplicates) or load data straight into target tables if you are sure you haven't duplicates.
Also another question in case 1 is whether intersection of your data is 0 rows i.e. all data are completely different in each source db or not.
So I'm sure you can find tools for blindly moving data from sybase to Oracle, although if you need to do some more complex filtering, computation or whatever you most probably need to write it yourself.
I'v done a few data conversion projects from one schema to another and as the requirements were quite complex the only possibility for us was to initiate a separate data conversion project and create conversion software (pl/sql packages manually).
You can find an overview of our approach in my article "Data migration from old to new application: an experience" here http://www.gplivna.eu/papers/legacy_app_migration.htm

  • Faster way to migrate data from SQL Server to Oracle 10g

We have to migrate data from SQL Server to Oracle 10 g.
One particular table on SQL Server has records around 1.25 millions.
We tried moving data using DTS package, but looks it will take hours with current speed of 300 records/minute.
This table has TEXT column, which has XML strings stored. I am not sure, if this is the reason for slow migration.
Would you please suggest better options to migrate it faster?
    Thanks in advance !!!

Have you tried Migration work bench?

  • Migrating data from one databaes to oracle?

is there any way to migrate my data from my old/previous database to oracle db.
ie. migrating data from one databaes to another.

If you are using Oracle 9i, look at external tables. Otherwise, dumping your data to text files and using SQL*Loader to load it into Oracle tables is a good option. There are various tools and utilities you might look into, including ODBC and migration toolkit. I prefer the SQL*Loader method for DBase, FoxPro, and Access.

  • How to migrate data from MS Access to Oracle???????

how to migrate data from MS Access to Oracle???????

You can use heterogeneous services (HS) connection to MS-Access from Oracle and still use the same PL/SQL (or even a single CTAS statement) or SQL to load directly to Oracle tables. It's transparent, quick and clean as opposed to writing complex control files.
You might have to set the ODBC connection to your Access database and add the details to Oracle listener.
Please let me know if you are not sure how to set up the connection.

  • How to migrate the data from DEC RDB 5.1 to Oracle 11g

    Hi,
As part of my project, we need to migrate the data from DEC RDB 5.1 present on Alpha server with VMS 6.1 OS into Oracle 11g. The size of the data in DEC RDB is around 40 GB.
Could you please suggest various ways of getting this done in easy and simpler way?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
when Oracle bought Rdb from Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in 1994, the name of the product changed from DEC Rdb to Oracle Rdb. Meanwhile the actual version of Rdb is 7.2, so you are on a VERY old version. And that excludes the suggestions from the mentioned note to use a database link from Oracle RDBMS to Rdb, that is simply not possible with that old version of Rdb.
But Rdb 5.1 knew already the Rdb Management Utility (RMU) - I just checked that with Rdb 4.1 which is even older.
There are two commands that are helpful for your task.
RMU/EXTRACT - that writes the metadata into a file. That output helps you to build a script to create all the objects in your target database.
RMU/UNLOAD - that writes the data of each table into a formatted file (one file per table). That output can be used by the SQL*Loader to load your data into the target database.
You can read all details about these commands in the online help on your Alpha. At first, issue the HELP command and look in the output list whether it lists a command RMU or RMU51. Then run that command:
    $ help rmu /extract
    and
    $ help rmu /unload
Replace rmu by rmu51 if the help command shows you that rmu51 exists but not rmu.
There is one caveat. Do you use blobs in your Rdb database? If you don't know that, create an the output with RMU/EXTRACT and search the output file for the string LIST OF BYTE VARYING. If there are none then you have no blobs. If you have some you need to take more care of them, they can't be unloaded into a formatted file, that must happen programmatical. If you have such fields then let me know, then I'll tell you how to get them out of your Rdb database.
    Best regards
    Wolfgang
P.S.: For Rdb related questions it is better to ask in our Communities at https://communities.oracle.com/portal/server.pt/community/rdb_product_family_on_openvms . That forum is watched by Rdb Support and Development.

  • How to migrate the data in AS/400 to Oracle

I have a customer, they plan to migrate their data from AS/400 DB2 V5R3,V6R1 to Oracle 11g. Since the source system is in production, they can only halt for 48 hours,
    which way is the fastest?
ORACLE workbench can only support to IBM DB2/400 V4R3 and V4R5, must we export the data from AS400 to ASCII then sql load to Oracle, the user data size is about 3T?
even get the initial data, how to capture the increased data? Oracle GoldenGate 11g can't access AS400 as source.

    Hello,
An option would be to use the Database Gateway for DRDA. With this tool, all the data in the iSeries machine will be seen like an Oracle Table.
You will be able to run statements like :
    INSERT INTO <Oracle_table> SELECT <col1, col2.....> FROM <iSeries_table>@AS400
    or even like
CREATE TABLE <oracle_table> AS SELECT * FROM <iSeries_table>@AS400
The Database Gateway for DRDA is more an integration tool than a migration tool. You will be able to access live data on the AS/400 like this data was in Oracle
table(s). You can even modify the AS/400 data (insert, update, delete) from Oracle. This can avoid to have to do a one-time migration.
The Database Gateway for DRDA documentation is available at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/gateways.112/e12014/toc.htm

  • How to select data from a PL/SQL table

    Hi,
I am selecting data from database after doing some screening i want to store it in a PL/SQL table (temporary area) and pass it to oracle reports.
Is there any way to select the data from a PL/SQL table as a cursor. Or is there any other way of holding the temporary data and then pass it back as a cursor.
    Regards
    Kamal

A PL/SQL "table" is anything but a table. Whoever came up with this term in PL/SQL to describe what is known as dynamic arrays (the correct programming terminology that existed since the 70's if not earlier and what is used in all other programming languages I'm familiar with)... well, several descriptions come to mind and none of them are complimentary.
You cannot "select" from a PL/SQL dynamic array as it is not a table within the Oracle context of tables.
Thus you need to convert (cast) a PL/SQL dynamic array into a temporary Oracle data set/table in order to select from it. This is in general a Bad Idea (tm). Oracle tables and SQL and concurrency controls and all that are especially designed for processing data. PL/SQL arrays is a very simplistic data structure with very limited usage. Why would you want to use that in SQL via a SELECT statement when you can use Oracle tables (or proper temp tables) instead? Besides that, it is also slow to cast a dynamic PL/SQL array into an Oracle SQL data set structure (context switching, copying of memory, etc).
The proper way to use PL/SQL to generate data sets for use via the SQL engine is pipelined table functions.
This is not to say that you should never use PL/SQL arrays and casting in SQL.. simply that you need to make sure that this is the correct and scalable way to do it. And that will also always be an exception to the rule when you do.

common mistake, you gave the field sizes in the
column listing of the table, but not in the file
definition. oracle does not apply one to the other.
in the file defintion section, give explict field
    sizes.Hi shoblock

  • How to migrate the data from DB to another DB

    Hi folks,
In my project I have one requirement. Let me explain in detail we are maintain two databases one for
master database called *GIIS* and one is history database HIST. Both DB version is 10g R1.
(Both DB’s have same no table as well structures)
                 1.  The GIIS database contains nearly 400 tables (master table as well as temporary table)
each Master table having it’s own temporary table.
                 2. Whenever we made the entry first it will go to temporary table after authorized that entry it will move to the master table
                 3. But the temporary table contains the data after move to master table .
                 4.     The temporary table data’s will be move to the HIST database each and every day at the night.
This migration we done through the procedure.  After migration complete the temporary table data’s will de deleted.
    My Question:
               1.     Whether it’s good practice to migrate the data from GIIS DB to another HIST DB using oracle stored procedure.
(we created the DB link from GIIS to HIST)
               2.     If not can any one suggest me the way to migrate the data from GIIS to HIST.?
               3.     Is there any other possibility to migrate the data from GIIS to HIST with out using procedure? Thanks

    Arun,
If the client doesn't know how to do exp/imp, I would really doubt and would be immensely concerned before suggesting the client any other way. If they don't know, tell them that there is a concept called test database which is used for learning so they should invest time to learn this technique since the other options suggested by fellow members are far more tougher than this one.
