Migration assistant doesn't connect
We're trying to migrate from a G5 imac to a new 24" imac, and even though we can boot the old imac into target mode and get the firewire logo, the new imac never "sees" the disk and migration assistant won't start.
Tried 2 different cables.
Ideas?
Is this a first generation G5 with an ATA drive (not SATA) in which you've replaced the drive?
I did a search of Apple's knowledge base and was not able to find a tech article addressing this sort of problem except when using 10.2.x which would not apply to your problem since you are using Tiger and Leopard.
All I could suggest at this point is to try another method for transferring your data as opposed to migrating your entire home folder.
1. If you have a home network you could use Ethernet and file sharing to transfer your data.
2. Use TDM but instead boot the new computer into TDM and access it from the G5's Desktop. You can transfer files and folders manually rather than use Migration Assistant.
3. If you don't have a home network you can connect the two computers directly by Ethernet cable and use file sharing to transfer your data.
Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing" to see what you need to do to enable it.

Migration assistant doesn't "see" Time Machine disk
Just got a new logic board, and they wiped the hard drive. My Time Machine disk mounts, and I can see the files. However, migration assistant doesn't list it as a source. (Yes it's formatted Mac OS Extended [Journaled])
Time Machine recognizes it and wants to use it as a new backup disk, but it doesn't want to show me anything from the old back up. I didn't do a new backup of the "new" computer. I don't back up applications just users.

DLSJust back home from a follow-up visit to the Genius Bar on this migration issue (from MacBook Air to new MacBook Pro).
Previous efforts to migrate had taken endless hours and seemed to hang at the 20-mins-remaining mark.
At the store, even after we manually turned off WiFi before connecting the Thunderbolt cable, Migration Assistant seemed to turn WiFi back on and start the migration over WiFi.
In the end, we used the Air (source) in Target Disk mode, which forced the computers to use the Thunderbolt cable. Migration took a little over half an hour, as opposed to 12 hours or more that Migration Assistant was saying earlier when apparently trying to use WiFi. -

Migration Assistant doesn't see SuperDuper backup
Anyone out there know why Migration Assistant won't see a SuperDuper bootable backup on an external HD? I just get a completely blank box in the Migration Assistant window.
I don't want to do a full restore/copy back as there may be problems on the backup and I want to choose what to migrate back to a clean internal HD.Unless you can test your Migration Assistant.app by connecting a different "good" external volume, I can't think of anything else to try.
I'd suggest also asking at the [SuperDuper forum|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=b4871cfda0b9d4f1fba ed6a37dd88b06&f=6] - questions posted there are answered directly by the SD developer, Dave Nanian.

Just to be sure - you are booted from the internal HD, correct? Migration Assistant won't show the startup volume. -
HT4889 Migration assistant doesn't see my 3TB Time machine it just keeps looking for other computers
I just did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my iMac and Migration Assistant doesn't seem to see my 3TB Time Machine. It continuously looks for other computers, and nothing else. I know the files work because I loaded it on my other MBP and it sees them just fine? am I just inpatient or is something wrong?
This happened to me after hard drive replacement under the Seagate Drive Recall at the local Apple Store. Here's what I learned from the process:
I Wagged the Mac home, fired it up (with naked OS installed at the Apple Store), and it wouldn't see my Time Machine drive with Setup Assistant - not on firewire 800 nor USB. Just a grey spinner that lasts forever. When I try just continuing anyway, it offers me something that looks plausible, but then puts up a dialog about duplicate user name, and no matter what I enter, it always says "that user already exists". So I think - maybe Migration Assistant. Complete the setup, create an account, watch the nice welcome movie. BAM - there's my Time Machine drive on the desktop. OK - it has to work . . . but no. Same behavior in Migration Assistant, plus the new OS offers to start making backups on my Time Machine disk - it's not recognizing it at all.
So - back to the Apple Store - let the genius figure it out. It turns out there are multiple problems. First, the "genius" who imaged my new machine picked 10.7.2 but my machine had 10.7.5 - turns out, it's not enough just to have right cat. Even a point release older OS may not recognize a newer Time Machine drive. The guy at the desk said "We have images of everything but the 10.7.2 has free iLife in it, so they like to use that one". What the heck? They don't image what you had originally as a matter of sane process?
Having figured that out, we re-image 10.7.5 at the store thinking we've fixed it. But no - Setup Assistant still won't see the Time Machine drive. Not on USB, not on Firewire. Not in a box, not with a fox.
So here's the second trick - newer machines have a recovery partion. see: http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/ Boot with the option key held down, pick that partition, then you'll get a "system restore" option, to restore your whole system from a Time Machine backup. My drive was recognized by the recovery partition restore process when neither Setup nor Migration Assistant would. Obviously, there's something broken in Setup/Migration Assistant.
Takeaway:
- if you're getting a drive replaced by Apple, make sure they image *exactly* the same OS
- if Setup Assistant fails, use the recovery partition for system restore
- Use Recovery Disk Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433 NOW to make yourself a recovery thumb drive just in case. With Apple's new "no media" approach to the OS, you're hosed without it. -
I'm wanting to migrate certain applications from my MacBook Pro over to my newer Mini, but Migration Assistant doesn't allow doing this by choosing which applications to migrate-how can I pick only certain ones?
You only bought it four months ago, so it's still under warrantly.
Call Applecare or call your nearest Applestore to make an appointment. Tell them your mac has serious technical issues, describe them shortly. -
I had to reformat my HD. Now I'm trying to restore from my Time Machine, back up external disk using Migration Assistant. The M.Assitant doesn't see my external disk though it's connected and turned on. What should I do?

Migration Assistant doesn't allow me to choose what drive.
Well, I got my new computer. I tried to migrate a drive from my old computer using Migration Assistant. and it doesn't allow me to choose what drive.
In my old computer I have 5 drives. The original HD (was 10GB, was replaced last year by a 40 GB) and on my Hitachi 250 GB drive that I added 2 years ago, there's a partition with 4 drives.
I wanted to migrate one particular drive from there (called Current work).
First I did a mistake. I connected both computer via the firewire in the afternoon when there was enough daylight so I don't have to do it later at night (the computers are under the table.) I thought it's OK since I'm not pushing any button yet ("migrate now", "transfer", and such).
I turned on the new computer and a message appeared: you must restart.
That's strange, I said to myself. it's a brand new computer. Usually It says that when there's a problem, but OK I restart and when it's back on, I see that my external drive (Neptune from OWC which was still hooked up in the old computer) is on the desktop. And it took just a few seconds. I open it and all the files, etc. are there. It did copy the whole external drive !
I'm not an computer expert but I believe the Mac Pro did notice that's there's a firewire hooked up and then, without asking me, migrated the external drive and that's why it asked me to restart. I would have prefer if it tells me "restart so migration can begin".
I don't mind for now that my external drive is on my new computer. I can always erase it if I don't want it. It is still external right ? so it doesn't intrude on the 640 GB of my HD so I just keep it.
But it also copied/migrate Mac HD 40 GB which is full of OS 9 and I almost never use it anymore. I don't want it coz it has applications and they advise not to migrate applications (certainly not applications with issues).
They say migrate folders, settings but re-install applications.
And it migrated also another drive called "Scratch" which has only personal date no system, no software.
Anyway, I erased everything and re-installed using the Install disk that came with the computer.
BTW, what they say in the manual (p. 90: Re-installing the software that came with your Mac Pro) is different than what really happens.
They say insert disk, double- click on Install and then click options in the "Select a destination" pane of the installer. Then click "erase and install" Problem is: there's no "Select a destination" pane. Or any options.
I had to go to Disk utility and erase, then re-install OS X.
Then re-install the applications using "Install applications" (the other disc that came with the computer. )
OK, I did that. Then while everything is empty, new, I used Migration Assistant.
Now here is the reason why I post this.
They say hold T key until you see a firewire icon then select a drive. I can't see when there's an icon coz I have only one monitor, so I just hold and hold the T-key and turn on the old computer. The screen shows "waiting for you other computer to restart" 2 min.... 5 min... 7 min. Nothing happens. I stop holding.
I look at the desktop and I see that the icon of the old 40 GIG Mac HD is there. (and I believe with a firewire logo, but not sure about that.)
I have the impression that if I kept the T-key longer it would have migrate the other drives as well.
They say keep the T-key down until you see the firewire (then let go I suppose. As I said I don't see what's going on on the desktop of my old computer so I kept the T-key for a few minutes. I also tried another time to let go after 1-2 min. No difference.
I shut down the new comp. and the old computer screen appears automatically (both are connected to the monitor; the old with analog port, the new with digital port) and sure enough the firewire icon is moving on the screen.
I go back to the new computer and put the old 40 GIG Mac HD in the trash. Actually, when it touched the trash, I just saw an eject icon and the drive disappear. Did not go in the trash which is empty. So I guess I ejected, not sure what's the difference but I looked for it to see if it's anywhere in the computer. Could not find it. Not in the HD, not in the desktop. Good, I don't want it there. Is it hidden somewhere ?
So I tried again but wondering perhaps the old computer should RESTART not turn on (it was off) so now I wait until it's on, then push restart. I hear the gong when it shuts off but that's it, no other gong when it comes back. I keep the T-key. But nothing happened. Just see the message "waiting for your other computer to restart"
PS: BTW Target mode (which seems to me similar to Migrating with "Migration Assistant") will not work for me because it must be SATA, mine is ATA.
I didn't try but read that it has to be SATA.
Is it the same ? In migrating they say hold down the T-key (T for target)
And how come that my 40GB HD which is ATA did migrate (not that I wanted too but still).
Also, this drive ("Current Work") that I want to migrate to the new computer is in my external drive. Can't I just drag it ? If it has only personal data, files and folders I know I can, but It has system (OS X) and applications. It's the one I use and boot on, in my old G4 but I want to transfer Files and folders and settings, so the new computer will know what are my Safari preferences, Automatic fill-in, and perhaps it will move my iTunes music Library too ?
Basically everything except applications. Although I would like my Nikon scanner to be in the new computer as well as the LaCie DVD recorder but I guess I can do that later, separately ?
What are the settings or info I need ? Because if it's just Safari preferences, automatic fill-in and other such small thing, it might be better to just do it again in the new comp and forget about the hassle of migrating.Try getting into Windows and then plugging in the Superdrive. The drive will only be attached to one OS or the other, not both.

Migration Assistant Doesn't see the Source Mac

I'm trying to transfer an application from my powerbook (10.5.5) to my desktop Mac (MDD, 10.4.11) using Migration Assistant. I'm very familiar with the use of Target Disk mode and Migration Assistant (MA). However, MA gets stuck in the window that says in the bottom ... " waiting for your old Mac to restart." The FireWire symbol is on the powerbook's screen and its icon shows on the MDD's desktop. I can open the "mounted" FW powerbook, etc. but MA doesn't see it.
Any thoughts?

Sometimes, connecting the FW cable after it's booted into Target mode helps, I've seen this a couple of times. -

SlofkeYou want to transfer from the Time Machine backups of your old Mac, right? Did you connect the drive to the new one? And select From Time Machine or other disk?
Does the Select the Source window (on Setup Assistant) or Select your System window (on Migration Assistant) not show the backup disk? If so, try just clicking the Continue button.
If that doesn't help, the backups may be damaged. Try to repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. -
Migration Assistant doesn't recognize old iMac OSX
I just bought a new iMac 20 inch running Tiger. In the migration assistant (first initial setup), it asks if I would like to transfer files and settings from an old iMac using a FireWire cable (I do). After it prompts me, I boot my "old" iMac (PowerPC G4 running OS 10.2.8) in FireWire Target Disk Mode (pressing "T" while restarting). Then connect the FireWire cable from my old iMac to the new iMac. The migration assistant says that OSX is not installed on my "old" computer (which it is).
I've done some research on this forum about this topic. I've checked if my old Mac needs a firmware update (it doesn't). How can I fix this problem - I would really like to run the migration assistant from the get-go. Any assistance would be very appreciated. Thanks.
iMac Mac OS X (10.4.4)One thing I don't know if it is relevant, but I found having the same username already created on my new machine when I ran the migration assistant caused it to fail.
If you haven't created anything essential on your new Mac, run the restore disks over again, and create an alternative user name:

Once that is done, then try to run the Migration Assistant from the Applications -> Utilities folder, and then login the old username and delete the new one. -
New MBP migration assistant doesn't offer ethernet nor WiFi options!!!???
I've read many places that we can now transfer the data from the old Mac (if both are OS X, Leopard), even if we don't have Firewire cable... Using either Ethernet cable or through WiFi (maybe slower, but hey, if that's all we have!).
I wanted to use Migration assistant for the first time, and Ethernet cable too... for the first time in switching computers, I wouldn't have to wait an eternity, and I wouldn't have to painstainkingly go through all my files and lose some along the way...
Except when I tried to follow the steps, the only option to me was to connect the computers with Firewire!!!
In the menu, it said I could connect them using Ethernet or WiFi too, but on the next page, it said I had to connect them with FireWire, and if I wasn't doing that, to hit "return" (in other words, to forget about it).
The only other options, then, were to transfer from another disk, a partition or Time Machine (also offered but not relevant, transfering TO another machine).
I was hoping I had missed something and the Ethernet and WiFi options could only be done AFTER original setup, so I did it and opened the app... which was the same.
I'm now trying to transfer the data using Time Machine and my latest backup, hoping it was really complete and will do the job.
And I have to do it WiFi.
Makes me real mad that an option that so many talk about and rave about, that is even talked about in the "more info" portion of the menu window doesn't truly exists!

After a couple hours of trying with Time Machine backup in WiFi, my MBP went to sleep (hadn't thought about it and no message to prevent me), and it bugged... So I could try your help and IT WORKED!!!

BUT, I had to look everywhere for an answer to another problem, since I didn't know how to access my files... 'cause since I couldn't access the ethernet option on the first setup screen, I had to create a new user account and didn't know I had to login under that account to see all my files.
Which makes me think I better go put THAT account as admin right now!
Now everything seems perfect, just gotta check it out before cleaning out old MB.
Still, I can't see why they don't make it all clear : Ethernet and Wifi as easy to select as Firewire (why a small button in the corner? Why not there -I sure as **** didn't see it and I looked hard and long) in the setup screen?
And why not put anything about user accounts in the manual or online how-to's?

This began happening recently on my late 2011 MacBook Pro. Nothing new was added. I try to print a message and the application crashes. When I restart it, it's okay. Then it happens again, but only some of the time. Here's the error message. (I found
