Migration Assistant - individual users?
Just a shot in the dark here -- I would assume the answer is no.
I'm receiving my 20" iMac G5 tomorow, and I plan to set up user accounts for both myself and my wife. I'm hoping there is a way to use the Migration Assistant to pull her account off her Mac Mini and mine off my PowerBook. Can you "migrate" into specific accounts from different machines?
Asking too much? Probably so.
Thanks for any help.
You can use the Migration Assistant to import users from different machines provided that only one machine contains accounts protected by FileVault if any do. The computer with the FileVault-protected accounts must be migrated from first. To access the Migration Assistant after using it the first time, open it from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. Basically, the answer to your question is yes.

Migration Assistant. extra User, double the files - only 10 GB left on HD
I restored my system after a login "freeze", following an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard. Apple help advised to use Migration Assistant to back up everything from Time Machine. Now I have an extra user ID (as they said I would) but the file structure doubled! This leaves me only 10GB on a 500GB drive - which I read is not good. Do I wipe the drive and start over but instead restore files one by one, or do I delete all the files in the new user ID, or is there some other idea I should consider? It appears there are dups of all the files from user to user, but I fear they are linked and deleting one will delete the other. Help.

Apple told me to go back to the originally supplied OS X (Leopard 10.5.x), then use the Snow L upgrade disc - is this really required ?
Yes, because your machine came with 10.5, there is a free iLife suit on the 10.5 disks that is not on the 10.6.3 retail disks.
BTW the 10.6.3 disks have the full 10.6 on it too, just no iLife. So you could have installed 10.6.3, Software Updated and installed another iLife if you needed it. A option to keep in mind for the future if the 10.5 disk no longer boots.
Last question ( for now;), what about apps I've downloaded (no disks)?
You need to download new copies from original sources. Your basically rebuilding your machine from the ground up to be reliable. If you have licenses, just email the developer and tell them your TM drive got screwed up, you had to rebuild your machine from scratch and need a new license code.
Programs need to be installed in most cases with the developers installer as they can place files in certain locations on your computer, including copy protection methods etc.
Once you have your brand new pristine system, then clone that to a couple of new blank external drives, date them, leave one as original, the other you set to update by tweaking CCC's settings to clone/backup according to your preferences.

Made a mess with Migration Assistant, Two user accounts. Help!
I got a new MacBook Pro Retina with Yosemite. Tried to use migration assistant to take files from my old 2008 MacBook (I only wanted photos, videos, music and documents - no applications, etc). After an excrutiatingly long time, I've made a mess of my new MacBook Pro. I now have two user accounts with my name. How do I delete the second? I have tried going into system preferences > users and push the delete key. This DOES NOT work! It makes that ping noise. I am computer slow so please help me with step by step directions on how to delete the extra user.
Also, I have now realized that this awful new MacBook Pro Retina has no disc drive and I have a 2008 Microsoft word CD I want to install. What can I do here?
For the record, I'm hating this new computer.
Thank you guys!1. Log out of the account you want to delete, unlock the Users & Groups pane, select it, and then delete it.
2. Use an external optical drive such as Apple's USB SuperDrive, or one inside another computer.

Migration Assistant and User Names
I'm about to take delivery of a new Mac Pro to replace the G5. I intend to just migrate my user data and install all apps from scratch so they're all Intel where possible. However, from memory, when you get a new machine and switch it on for the first time, you have to set up a user before you're asked if you want to transfer data. If I use the user name I'm used to from the previous machine, it won't migrate a user with that same name. I know I can set up a dummy user, migrate my data then delete the dummy but is there another way?
I need help, and I'm definitely panicking. I need clear concise answers to things. I'm willing to try things on my own, but I don't want to keep getting deeper and deeper and it be spring, and I still haven't fully loaded my brand new i5 imac, and not be dong fun stuff. Between the flicker, migration assistant woes, and duplicate email issues, I'm 75% to being at 'wit's end' and taking the whole **** thing back.
I did not migrate when first using set-up asst, and registered same user name on new i5 as I have on macbook (or close enough, I thought caps were diffferent in one place, but apparently not). So... later, when I went to migrate, it asked for different user name. I 1) picked a slightly diff name, and 2) migrated every thing (apps, network, etc). approx 35 gigs & 90 minutes. I go to look, nothing's there, obviously, and I have exactly my old macbook on a new user name. I don't want this.
a) how do I get everything I need/want from old macbook (iphoto/movies, docs, etc) to my ORIGINAL user acct on new i5?
a2) WHAT, exactly, of the 4 clickable buttons (user, apps, network, ?,) when I'm migrating, do I need to actually move?
b) a friend said I can move these files/whatever to a shared folder from the addl user account to the original, then delete old one (or keep it as back up). Is this true?
b2) I moved one pic this way, and it works I had to ("authenticate"), but let's say I move the "picture" folder (which includes 4,000 pics) this way, will there be any problems? in other words, will the iphoto or pictures folder that migrated to the user name I did not want, 'merge,' or 'replace' (or something else?) the handful of iPhotos and files I already have on my original/proper user name? are there any issues w/ doing this? keep in mind, when the old iPhoto6 migrated from macbook to username I had to create on new 'puter, it was upgraded, after promp, to iPhoto9, which is fine; just want to make sure that will be fine, moving this way (as well as iMovie, everything else.). And I guess, I need to keep 'authenticating.'
c) also, one of the 4 buttons when migrating is "user accounts." that's different than the 'user' folder? Please tell me which 4 buttons I need to have clicked when I migrate from a 4-yr old macbook w/ ilife06, to a brand new quadcore i5. and again, please explain what 'applications' are again. I used to know, but my head is so wrapped around all this BS now....
d) can I just migrate again, but the proper stuff, TO my orginal user account on the new i5, or no?
e) If I eventually get all my stuff - whichever way - to the one and original user, can I simply delete the other user from this 'puter?
Thanks for the help. Mac sellers REALLY should tell customers this, about doing it upon setting up. Or apple should simply rewrite the program to include just being able to do what you do at set up, anytime. -
Hi I own an IMac with two users on it, mine and my partners. She recently got a new Macbook and wants to only transfer her user information using Migration Assistant. Is this possible or will it try and migrate both users over?
Thanks for any advice!Yes, it's possible. Select only the account you want to migrate.

Migration Assistant and user permissions broken
I just used Migration Assistant to my old early 2008 unibody 15" MBP to import stuff to my brand new 15" quad core i7. The old machine was connected through FW800 in target disk mode.
Somehow this process failed and it left me to an odd result which I cannot figure out how or why such things would happen. I have used migration assistant often successfully, if not exactly this way.
I already decided to start things from scratch, but I would appreciate any insight that somebody might have. Like what just happened? Do you have similar experiences?
The process:
- In my old machine I had two users, for the sake of argument, "MainUser" and "OldUser".
- In my new machine I had two users made right after a clean install, "Admin" and "MainUser". I usually work with "MainUser" so I made one without thinking about it much.
- I connected the old machine in Target Disk mode and started Migration Assistant under Admin of the new machine. First question I answered to migrate from another disk, as the other machine was in Target Disk mode. Next one asked to pick the disk and that is followed by a selection "What to migrate". I wanted to install applications from scratch, so I checked everything except applications. I do not know if this is relevant, but I would imagine it is not.
- A pop-up appeared, which correctly told that there already is MainUser on the new machine. The dialog gave me three options: 1. Rename the account that I am transferring, two with the same name could not exist 2. Replace the existing account with the one I am transferring 3. Do not transfer this account.
- I chose 2, because there was nothing worth saving in the MainUser account on the new machine. Continue.
- Watch a few hours of progress bar
- After the migration process the machine was in very odd state. I logged in as MainUser and it oddly looked like default Snow Leopard state, not like the desktop of the migrated account. No folder items that I had on the desktop previously were visible, language was default English and desktop background was the Snow Leopard nebula. I tried, but could not change that in the system preferences.
- Closer inspection revealed that I did not have permissions to access any of the folders under my username, like Documents, Music, Movies etc. This also explained the desktop problems. It meant that none of the programs were allowed to read or write any data under Library folder so everything was and stayed as default. For instance, any settings that I tried to change and which might even apparently change, would reset back on logout. Programs settings were empty, like no bookmarks on Safari or Apple Mail did not show the mail accounts.
- I checked with Terminal what was on with permissions, and for some odd reason, all the folder owners under MainUser belonged to OldUser(!).
- There is no reason that I can think of why that user account would have anything to do with this migration -- after all, the whole deal was supposed to be to migrate (or overwrite) MainUser, not to mess with OldUser in any way, except bring that over as a separate item.
- For the sake of argument, I also logged to OldUser account and that seemed to be transferred correctly. No issues with file permissions or the desktop. Only MainUser was messed.
- I decided to take the ownership of all files under MainUser account back. I did "sudo chmod -R MainUser *" to grab everything. Immediately the stuff on desktop appeared. After logout and login rest of things seemed to return (mostly) to those places that the migrated MainUser should have had, like the desktop background, dock position and even Apple Mail now showed my old emails.
Even if I sort of fixed things, I have iffy feeling about the whole process.
I decided to start over. This time I will not have MainUser account on the new machine to avoid any further hassle. While I suggest everyone to avoid this situation and not to have users with same name or let Migration Assistant to run this overwrite -option, I would like to hear any speculation why or how this might have happened.
If Apple is listening, you might check the latest Migration Assistant in the above case. There might be a bug. Thank you for listening.I think it is inadvisable to have the same user account on the target machine when using Migration Assistant - just from recollection this is known to cause problems.
However, in my experience (and I have used MA many times across many machines), even when apparently completing successfully, MA simply does not work properly when it comes to permissions.
For example, after using MA to import my previous user account to my new MBP 2.3 i7, I cannot drag anything out of the dock - it just doesn't work.
Also, content of my desktop folder does NOT display on the desktop itself.
I have tried applying specific permissions to this folder, for my user account AND "Everyone" - it makes no difference.
I do not regard Migration Assistant as fit for purpose. -
Migration Assistant Thinks User is HUGE (terabytes)
I'm trying to migrate from a 12" PowerBook G4 (software updates current) to my new iMac Intel Duo Core -- I chose to transfer settings during the initial setup but when it looked for existing users it said my account was 24,295,705.2 GB in size -- and so there was no room on the new machine to copy.
I then skipped that part of the process and tried to run Migration Assistant later with the same results. I zapped the PRAM of the PB, repaired permissions, repaired the disk, shutdown and started again, etc. ...
...and always get the same results. I have two questions:
1. Is this a known problem with a known workaround?
2. If I can't use Migration Assistant, am I up a creek without a paddle?
I did try copying my user folder over and then creating a user with that name and I seem to be at least part way there, but am afraid there are pieces missing (registration info from apps? etc.) that will bite me later. For example, my copy of REALbasic thinks it's now a trial version.
I'd really appreciate any help with this!
Thanks.

iMac 2Ghz Intel Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2GB RAM, 128MB Video RAM, 250GB HDJay,
you do have to be careful that you don't transfer apps over to your new intel mac. You may end up carrying over drivers and apps that are not compatible and may crash or cause problems.
Best option is to just transfer over settings and your documents. I believe that is one of the 2 or 3 options in Migration Assistant. I just did this myself the other day. Although i was transferring from a PPC G4 volume to another... and it worked flawlessly..... all my apps work perfect....all my settings are there and all my documents are intact also.
so keep in mind that your best option is to just migrate your settings and documents. You may have to reinstall "universal" versions of your software to be safe.
good luck to you. -
Why is migration assistant crashing?
I've recently upgraded to Mavericks. I had issues with the installation and it was necessary to do a clean install. I can't get my backup to import through migration assisstant because it is crashing seconds after I open it. Anyone have suggestions on how I diagnois the problem with Migration Assistant?
Sorry. I had used the string "Crash" when search earlier and it limited the scope of the report in the window.

Time Machine after Migration Assistant restore
During vacation, my MacBook pro’s hard disk suffered directory corruption so bad that neither Disk Utility nor DiskWarrior could repair it. I knew I had a recent Time Machine backup at the office, so I just reformatted my hard disk, reinstalled, and was up in running again in a few hours.
When I returned from my holidays, I used Migration Assistant to restore everything from the Time Machine backup, including users, applications, preferences, and other data.
I experienced several problems:
1. The Mac is bound to an Active Directory domain. After restoring users using Migration Assistant, domain users could no longer log in. I had to unbind and re-bind the Mac to the domain before domain logins worked again.
2. The newly re-installed and restored Mac no longer recognized the Time Machine backup as being a backup of itself. This caused additional problems because when I enabled Time Machine again, it tried to make a full backup, saw that there wasn’t enough space on the disk, and deleted all but the most recent backup from the Time Machine volume.
3. Migration Assistant failed to restore several very important files, including:
a. Finder preferences and desktop layout
b. Mail preferences, including accounts and signatures
c. Keychains, including passwords to WiFi access points and web sites
d. VPN settings
e. The Stickies database
f. Some Address Book contacts
g. The iTerm.plist file (from ~/Library/Preferences)
h. Lotus Notes Data (from ~/Library/Application Support)
i. Other application preferences & data
I was able to locate some of these files in the single remaining backup on my Time Machine volume. However, some were simply gone. The iTerm.plist file, for example, was nowhere to be found. This file contained several dozen customized iTerm commands that I will have to reconstruct from scratch.
4. Ever since restoring from backup, Mail has exhibited a problem wherein it sometimes displays the wrong message. It doesn’t do this with all messages; only some. For example, if I select the most recent message in my inbox right now, a message received in June is displayed in the preview pane instead.
Has anyone else observed problems like these? Is there any hope of recovering the backups that Time Machine saw fit to delete?Pondini wrote:

2. Time Machine does not recognize old backups as being from the same computer if the Migration Assistant method was used to restore the computer.
Not exactly, but the result is nearly the same. When you erased the internal HD, it got a new UUID, so to OSX it's a different drive, and everything put back on it was considered as new, and Time Machine backed it up.
Ah, ok. So if I understand correctly, it was the fact that I reformatted the drive, and not the particular method I used to restore, that led to Time Machine deleting most of the backups. Is that right? I still find it very odd that right after restoring from a backup, the system doesn’t recognize that very same backup.
I suppose if I had investigated the matter more carefully and spent a few hours reading on the web, I might have learned about some properties file inside the backupdb where I could have manually tweaked the UUID after reformatting. But honestly, how would I have known this? I thought I did things according the proper procedure. When Disk Utility was unable to repair the drive, it displayed specific instructions to back up my files (done), reformat, reinstall, and then restore from backup. When I followed these instructions provided by Disk Utility, my Time Machine backup was rendered unrecognizable, and most of my backups were deleted without warning.
Moreover, I wonder again: how would a less knowledgeable user experience this?
I gotta say, this process could be made more user-friendly and the instructions & warnings clearer.
The iTunes Library was not restored.
Was it in the default location (the +<your home folder>/Music+ folder)?
I found the original iTunes Library on the backup disk; I restored these files manually and that fixed iTunes. All of the music had already been restored successfully. And yes, my library was in the ~Music directory.
Once I’d made iTunes happy, I was able to sync my iPhone. This brought back the missing Address Book contacts, because they were on the phone.
The Mail database appears to be irretrievably corrupted. I have no confidence any more that clicking on an item in the list will actually display that item.
Have you tried +Mailbox > Rebuild+ from the Mail menubar?
I hadn’t seen that option. That fixed it. Thanks!
This was my first time relying on my Time Machine backup, and I must say I am not satisfied. I work in IT and consider myself a power user; I hate to think how a less expert user would experience this situation. So much for “it just works.”
Ordinarily it does; this is quite unusual.
I'm a retired IT guy, and learned many years ago that all hardware fails, sooner or later, and no backup app is perfect, so I always recommend keeping (at least) secondary backups. It's not any help now, of course, but you might want to check out #27 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for some suggestions.
I’m not sure I will continue using Time Machine. I like the advantages (multiple versions, integration into some apps, nice UI); but I don’t know if they’re worth much if the backup is not reliable as a system backup. I wonder if an incremental Carbon Copy Cloner backup wouldn’t be better for my needs. A CCC backup would also give me one additional benefit: it would be bootable, virtually eliminating downtime and facilitating quick repair and restoration.
Thanks again for your suggestions. They have been informative and helpful. -
TimeMachine / Migration Assistant and a different UID, but same username
Hello there,
I am going to do a clean reinstall of my Macs with Mountain Lion (no need to discuss clean install vs. upgrade, please). During this shift the goal is to transfer all accounts into Open Directory. While keeping the account names, the UIDs will be different.
Doing a clean install, I can see no use in restoring all stuff in a users profile, for some is old, useless and maybe the related application is long gone. But there are a couple of items worth to be saved, for sure: emails, contacts, calendar, favorites, iTunes library, the users documents and very important: purchased Items from iTunes or App Store and the keychain of cause. Users agreed, that they can rebuild settings of other applications, not listed before.
Will the Migration Assistant the right path to go? Can I use a TimeMachine Backup and restore it for a user with the same name, but a different UID using the Migration Assistant? Will there be any pitfall for purchased items or the keychain?
Thanx for your help

No. Migration Assistant restores user accounts and data (although you can omit some broad categories). It won't "merge" data into an existing home folder.
When it does that, it will preserve the UID on the backups if it can; if the same UID already exists, it will use a different one.
If a user account of the same name already exists, it will require you to rename one of them, or skip it.
Note that, if you use it when OSX first starts up on a new Mac, or after installation on an empty volume, it's called Setup Assistant. The windows are a bit different, but the only significant difference is, since there aren't any user accounts already, it can preserve all UIDs and user names from the backups.

Using Migration Assistant to Move Data Files from one Account to New User
Is it possible or recommended to use Migration Assistant to move data files from an old user account to a new user account on the same volume/hard disk?
Migration Assitant cannot be used as a simple file transfer utility. MA can transfer an entire Home folder or entire Users folder but not individual files.
In general files in one user account cannot be moved to another user account as this would violate built-in security measures.
What you can do is to copy the files to an external device like a hard drive or flash drive. First log in to the old account. Then configure the drive to ignore preferences by Pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the Ignore permissions on this volume checkbox at the bottom of the window. Copy your files to the device. Log into the new account. Verify the external drive is still configured to ignore permissions (reset it, if not.) Copy the files from the external device into the Home folder of the new account. I would create a temporary folder for these files. If you still end up without the proper permissions you will need to make modifications that are easier done if all the files are in a single folder. -
I'm trying to migrate my music and pictures over to my new iMac. When I use the migration assistant it connects to my PC fine but it won't let me use the account name and username that I have created as the admin. It requires me to create a new user account - so then I have two separate accounts to log in to which i don't want. How do I get it to let me use the current account that I have to move my files to?
Thanks!Migration Assistant creates a new account and migrates all the information you have requested to that new account. There is no way around that. However once migrated you can move the data to the account you want to. Here are some instructions for doing so:

Migration assistant added second user did not merge data: iTunes
I set up my new mac at the store then came home and connected my OLD iMac to the new via Firewire. I used Migration Assistant, and the migration took about 90 minutes. When it was done I had two parallel usernames; my old username with the old desktop look and stuff and the new computer's username I set up with the clerk at the Mac Store. Now I have two separate users on my computer, complete with two separate iTunes. When I look in the finder under Macintosh HD/Users, I see an icon for the new user (the little house) and a folder labeled with the old username but it has a red "negative" circle over it (like a push icon on an iPhone, but with a minus sign in the middle), plus a Shared folder.
The weird thing is that all the documents and stuff merged, but I have to go to the old user to use iTunes. My old computer did also have 2 users (why? I have no idea) and it brought the iTunes library I did not use in, but not the massive library I do use in. I teach a fitness class and have about 100 unique playlists and ALOT of music on that thing - but the wrong library was brought in. Now I have to switch back to the old user to use iTunes and that just seems silly. I have tried 'add to library" to try to bring the stuff over but it can't see into the other user I guess.
Any suggestions? It is so frustrating that my whole library is there but I can't access it on the new user after spending all that money.
Thanks!Read here on why a second user was added and how to remedy.

Merging user accounts after using Migration Assistant
I've just acquired my first Mac (Lion OS) and set it up without using the Migration Assistant. I set up mail accounts for my existing email addresses (Gmail & Virgin). A few days later I decided to transfer my old files from the PC using Migration Assistant. Rather than do the whole thing in one go I thought I'd start with iTunes. What I failed to realise is that the Migration creates a new user account on the Mac (something I only noticed when I couldn't find iTunes and went searching). If I now migrate something else such as "My Photographs", another user account will appear.
I don't really want more than one user account so how do I transfer the iTunes music from one account to another and the same when I bring more stuff across from the PC? A related issue is the fact I've set up mail accounts already. If I migrate my Outlook mail folders and email account details can these also be merged or will the Mac be confused as I've already set something up?
Any help appreciated from this newbie Mac user. Thanks.Have a read here Transferring files from one User Account to another

I recently purchased a mac and used a firewire to transfer my files onto my new imac with migration assistant. Now I have 3 users. I want one with all my main files (pictures, music, files from my old computer).
I don't mind having an additional "family" account so my younger daughter can't mess us things, but I can't figure out how to get files from one to the next and then delete the one user name.
Thanks,In order to delete other accounts you must be logged into an admin account. You cannot delete the account into which you are currently logged.
When you started the new computer you were in the Setup Assistant. You created a new admin account before finishing the setup. You need to log into that account because it is an admin account. You can then delete the account you migrated from the old computer (and any other accounts you don't need or want.)
Then create a temporary new user account with admin status - name it, Temp. Log out of the current account and log into the new account, Temp. Now delete the initial account you created in Setup Assistant. You now have one account, Temp. Now re-migrate your data from the old computer. When that is completed log into the migrated account, which should be an admin account, and delete the temporary account, Temp.
