Why is migration assistant crashing?
I've recently upgraded to Mavericks. I had issues with the installation and it was necessary to do a clean install. I can't get my backup to import through migration assisstant because it is crashing seconds after I open it. Anyone have suggestions on how I diagnois the problem with Migration Assistant?
Sorry. I had used the string "Crash" when search earlier and it limited the scope of the report in the window.

Looking for assistance here.
Have an older iMac 24" 8.1 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (1TB drive) which is running 10.9.4 .
Just opened the box today to my new iMac 27" 5k retina 3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5 (3TB fusion drive) which is running 10.10
Anyway wanting to use the apple migration assistant to move my valuable mail, itunes, calendar and files and photos (especially my aperture library)
I connected with Ethernet cable, and had migration running ok on both iMac's. Things work fine (confirmation on both sides, code displayed, etc.) until the target iMac is trying to find all the items to migrate. The old iMac is showing that it is transferring, but then the migration assistant crashes on my older iMac and return to the user login screen.
This has happened on a number of occasions, and I tried with Ethernet cable (I had wifi turned off on both imacs) and just over wifi (with the ethernet cable disconnected).
I'm a but frustrated right now, I was hoping to easily get my old files / setup over to my iMac as soon as possible.
Anyone here with a similar issue, or how to best approach this ?
Many thanks.Check out Setting-up a new Mac from an old one, its Backups, or a PC

Migration Assistant Crashes when importing from ext HD using Time Machine
Hi there,
I'm having issues restoring a harddrive using migration assistant to import a TimeMachine backup.
I've just reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5.8 onto a Mac Pro 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with 2GB RAM.
I've done all updates and repaired permissions on bootable drive and repaired the external disk where the TimeMachine is stored.
The TimeMachine is stored on an external harddrive with USB2.0 connection.
I can load Migration Assistant, select migrate from TimeMachine, but when the import users screen appears after 40 seconds or so Migration Assistant crashes.
Here is the console report:

Hi Pondini,
Thank you for your reply, your help is much appreciated.
The original problem was: On one user account the user root directory was not writable (i.e. the user couldn't save any work to their documents), so I tried to reset the permissions in the "get info" menu, but after that the OS X directory didn't start. I did successfully repair all permissions using Disk Utility (running from the external harddrive OSX i mentioned in my last post).
Do you think Disk Utility didn't repair all the permissions? In this case, the permissions on the Time Machine backup might still be corrupted.
That doesn't affect user permissions, only permissions on files installed by OSX or Apple apps. And you can't repair permissions on your backups, since that's not a "bootable" volume.
It seems that my Migration Assistant crashes routinely after 40 seconds (or so) no matter which options you select (if any). Even if I leave the app searching for user accounts on the Time Machine it crashes.
If I'm quick i'll be able to deselect all users except admin, or if I'm slow I won't get so far. No matter what, it still crashes.
Oh, it hadn't sunk in that it was crashing before you make selections. Now that I re-read your first post, I see you did say that, sorry.
The app never allows me to view installed applications.
No, it won't. You can only select or omit them.
I don't know whether you have a problem with your Mac or the backups.
You mentioned earlier that you'd done a +*Repair Disk+* on the TM drive, so if there's a problem with them, it's something DU can't fix.
Have you done a +*Verify Disk+* on your internal HD? If not, make sure it's ok.
If so, something may be amiss with the +Migration Assistant+ app. I'd suggest downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. -
Attempting to use Migration Assistant from older Macbook pro to a new one. When connected by ethernet or firewire, Migration Assistant crashes before it starts. When just wifi, it slows down, initially stating 4 hours, then 5, then 6.....
what's the trick here?Solution: Shut down old computer. Boot holding down the T key, to boot into target disk mode. Then connect via firewire to new computer and the old computer appears as a volume and you can migrate from there.

Migration Assistant Crashes Every Time! Help!
Brief Version: Old computer crashes when Migration Assistant is used
Full version: I am the computer guru in my household. My mom was having trouble with her fully updated 1.33 GHz PowerBook G4 and Backup. I suggested what I used to do, which is use Migration Assistant to backup my Home folder onto a different computer. Since I have plenty of room after I quadrupled my hard drive on my fully updated 1.33 GHz iBook G4 capacity to 160 GB, I figured my hard drive would be able to house her home folder quite nicely. I start up Migration Assistant. I restart my mom's PowerBook in Target Disk Mode. The FireWire symbol is bouncing around like normal. I connect the two w/ FireWire. I go through the steps. I get to Select User Folders to Transfer or something. It keeps loading. I look at my mom's mac. The FireWire icon is not moving. I push the power button on my mom's mac. It doesnt turn off right away. It's crashed. I hold down the power to force it to shut down. I back up Migration Assistant and try again. I get through the select user folder screen. I get all the way to Transferring files. Fire wire stops moving again. I try repeatedly and I'm sick and tired of this! Please offer input!

Migration Assistant crashes when I try to restore from previous system bckp
When I first started up my new MacBook Pro and arrived at the Migration Assistant screen, I selected 'TimeMachine' backup, but the Installer freaked out and took me back to the language selection screen.
I have since tried doing the same thing in Utilities - Migration Assistant, but after a long period of MA 'calculating size' and then showing (briefly) the two users on my last system, it crashes.
I suspect there is a problem with the external drive that I have the Time Machine backup on. I got my MacBook Pro two days ago, and the first thing I did was Software Update, so there shouldn't be any conflicts going on.
Does anyone have any suggestions? My life is on the external drive, and the thought of losing files and settings is really making me sick.try repairing the external drive (not permissions) with disk utility.
if migrating using MA doesn't work still doesn't work after that you have no choice but to do manual migration by restoring things you need by hand. see this link for a list of things to restore in your home directory.
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507
to restore by hand from TM drive control-click on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks". this will let you access your old TM drive in browse mode. -
Why is Migration Assistant not seeing Time Machine backup?
Had year old iMac with Snow Leopard and recently was lucky enough to have it replaced with a brand new model with Lion. Had the previous iMac backed up on external drive with Time Machine.
I know I can't restore from that Time Machine backup since I am now on Lion but shouldn't I be able to migrate my old user account from the Snow Leopard Time Machine backup to the new Lion system? The Lion Migration Assistant will not recogize or show the drive or backup from Time Machine though even though it is mounted in the Finder in Lion.
Any ideas?I just had a similar problem to this. I have a MacBook Pro (Lion) that has been backed up to an attached USB Time Machine disk that was formatted on this same machine. I had a major crash, and had to reinstall Lion, and my Time Machine backup drive did not show up in the list. I do see several drives on my network, but not the locally attached USB drive. I rebooted and tried several time, no joy.
The backup drive passes all disk tests, and shows up when plugged in to other machines, and even shows up in the boot menu (but will not boot) when the MacBook Pro starts. And it has the secret flag file (if you do not know, the drive MUST have a zero length file titled ".com.apple.timemachine.supported" (note the leading .) at the root of the drive or the drive will not be recognized) and it should just work. It did backup to it just fine, but I cannot restore.
I finally made this work (I think) by actually getting another external USB drive, formatting it, and then using another machine to copy the Time Machine backup from the old drive to the new drive. I added the myster flag file to the new drive (see above) and connected it to the MacBook Pro. This time, it did recognize it.
I am trying to do a restore now, and looks like it should work just fine. What a pain in the butt.
I would love to hear from Apple what causes this. There must be an easier solution than to spend 6 hours copying a full back from one 2 TB drive to another! SIgh!
UPDATE: OK, it showed up as a restore disk in the "restore utility" in the energency partition, but I need to install a new OS (there was some curruption) and after installing a New OS, and getting to the migration screen, once again, this new drive does not show up. ARGHHHHhhhhhhh

Hi,
I recently had my iMac 27inch (Mid 2011) in for service and am wanting to transfer gear back onto it from my MacBook Pro.
Both are running OS10.9.
Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to transfer my folders and files back to the iMac.
Today when I attempted to do the same with the applications it automatically quit on me before I could get to the dialogue panel that would allow me to indicate that i wanted to transfer applications only, this time.
Does anyone know why it is automatically quitting and what if anything I can do to remedy this problem?
Dave W.Thanks for your suggestions. Have managed to get Migration Assistant working but now have a new problem, i.e. where does it save the transferred files?!! Searched a few forums and it seems it saves it under your old username, or suchlike. Anyway I tried logging on as a new user using my old user name but there were only a handful of files there, couldn't locate the majority of stuff from my old laptop. Anyway I don't intend to go through any more hoops with MA - will just save the important stuff to an external drive and transfer it that way. Not impressed with MA at all. I thought it was supposed to be a user-friendly tool to simplify the transfer from pc to Mac - not my experience, I'm afraid!

Why is Migration Assistant taking soooo long?
I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13". I decided to transfer most of my stuff from my old iBook G4. I tried to use a firewire cable but MA said "Mac OSX is not installed on your old Mac." Huhhh? That machine has never seen anything but OSX...
So I use an ethernet cable directly between the two computers. That works. Except that it is taking INSANELY long. I am only transferring about 30 gigs and it has been going for 6 hours and says it will need 8 more! What can possibly take so long??? When I transfer files over my network using the same cables, 30 gigs takes maximum 30 minutes I think....
Thanks,
BoOkay a few things here - first if you're using mavericks on both machines you don't need to do anything with target disk mode. Just using migration assistant on both machines connected by thunderbolt is enough.
Second, I have a 2011 MacBook Air and it does have a single thunderbolt port. Pre-2011 may have been the mini display port.
Finally, and the reason I stumbled onto this, the thunderbolt connection works wonderfully fast but there's some kind of bug in migration assistant that defaults to the wifi connection if both machines are connected to the network, even if you have a thunderbolt cable connected. I'm transferring a 2011 MacBook Air to a new rMBP and just discovered this issue. I connected with the thunderbolt cable, it estimated around an hour for about 80gb of data then inched closer to 36 mins as the estimate.
At some point along the way though migration assistant decided wifi would be better and the estimate jumped to over 20 hours. I unplugged my router (only solution for me once both machines had migration assistant running) and it seamlessly defaulted back to thunderbolt where the estimate cut back down to 30ish minutes.
The thunderbolt cable being worth the extra money or not is I suppose a matter of opinion but for me it's got plenty of other uses to justify the price and certainly made this transfer a lot faster. I just wish migration assistant wouldn't default to wifi without any kind of indicator.
So I assume too late to help you out but hopefully someone will see this and fix this bug and maybe it'll be helpful to someone else as it's still an issue as of right now. -
Why is Migration assistant still looking for other computers?
Trying to transfer my macbook pro information to my husband's newer MacBook Pro (he's getting a new one). I have followed all the directions for migration assistant. Unchecked the firewall to let other computers connect, etc. , but it both computers keep "looking for other computers. On the newer mac, the one I want my information transferred to, it actually has the pass code number. What am I doing wrong? Someone help me!
And, I do not have a fire net cable, I am trying to migrate wirelessly.

TS2664 Migration Assistant crashing my home BT Broadband network
I'm trying to transfer files from my Windows 7 based PC to my new Mac Air using Migration Assistant and my home BT Broadband network. On three occassions now my PC has lost it's B'B network connection during the file transfer process. The only way I've been able to reconnect my PC to the network has been by unplugging and re-booting the network hub, by which time of course, 3 or 4 hours of file transferring to my MAc has been lost and I have to start again - 3 times now and none completed! Solution(s) anyone?
Um..., you posted this in the OSX 10.4 forum and there's no way a new MBA is running 10.4 Would you like for us to request it be moved, and if so, which OS version is the MBA running?

I was trying to transfer some files using Migration assistant from EMAC to new IBook. Migration didn't allow me to take just the files I wanted but grabbed everything from EMAC so I tried to stop it by pulling the firewire plug out of the Emac. Really really dumb.
EMAC said to restart computer but always comes back to the same message on a grey screen (restart computer.)
Ran apple hardware test and everything passed but still can't get passed restart request.
Any suggestions?David Weser,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Have you unplugged the Firewire cable from the eMac?
I'd try unplugging the power cord from the side of the eMac for 15 to 30 minutes, also unplug all peripherals, then reattach the power cord only and try to restart.
Will your eMac will start in Safe Mode?
The restart message text indicates a kernel panic on startup. My guess (I'm not sure) is that the migration assitiant sets up an invisible file at the root directory indicating that it's running and would normally remove that file on a sucessful completation. When your eMac tries to restart it sees the file, tries to resume the broken migration, and drops into the kernel panic. If that's the case, booting into single-user mode should allow you to remove the file, but it's definitely not advisable to try that blindly. I'll see if I can turn up some help on how to clean up after a failed migration. -
Migration Assistant crashed new iMac, won't boot
I bought a new i3 iMac and skipped the migration assistant initially. Things were going fantastic, I imported and built a new iTunes library, iPhoto library etc.
It is running 10.6.6.
Then last night I decided to use Migration Assistant to move things from old Intel MacBook (running 10.5.8). As the migration was going to be something like 20-30 GiG's, I unchecked everything except Applications, and a few select folders from each user account (Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Movies). Since one account had the same name as the account on my new iMac, I asked Migration Assistant to rename the old account. I then went to sleep.
When I woke up, iMac screen was black and would not wake up from sleep. Old MacBook tells me that the connection was dropped.
I had to depress power button to force shutoff. Upon restart, at the apple boot logo, all I get is a message saying the computer has to be restarted, which appears in multiple languages. There seems to be nothing I can do to get it to boot.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That's likely a complication. You'll now have an extra user account with that stuff in it, and the account(s) you transfer won't have permission to it.

That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Try running this: [Apple Hardware Test: iMac (Mid 2007) and later models|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1883]. Run the Extended tests.
and the (free) Rember, a heavy-duty memory tester, from: http://www.kelleycomputing.net/
If that doesn't help, start with this Apple article: [If “You need to restart your computer” appears|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8965.html].
Once you get it started, check the transferred user accounts; most likely, the transfer was incomplete, and you'll have to delete the partial accounts and run the Migration again.
If your Apps were only partially transferred, just select them again -- Migration Assistant will just skip any that already exist on the new Mac. The only problem you might have is if it was in the middle of transferring an app when it failed; in that case you may have a partial copy of the app. -
Migration assistant crashes when restoring time machine backup from mountain lion
Hi
I installed a new HDD in my MacBook Pro Mid 2009, installed the original OS again and tried to import using the Setup/Migration Assistant. It told me that since the time machine backup is newer, this can't be done. So I first upgraded to Mountain Lion (suspecting that I can install my SnowLeopard TM-backup there) and tried the same. The migration assistant started, found the image (on Tiime Capsule) and started to calculate the items that need to be transferred. After 17hours, I interrupted it.
Next thing was to upgrade the old HDD with mountain lion, create a fresh TM backup of this on an external USB drive and try the same. It finds the image, identifies the files (about 420GB), I can see the users, all fine. When I hit Next, it starts to calculatate of locate the files. I assumed that my drives were not the fastest ones so I did expect it to take a while. This time I interrupted it after 34hours as it was still giving me the "progress" bar.
For all I know, I have a TM-Backup of Mountaion Lion and a freshly installed Mountain Lion and I am using the Apple software for transfer - perfect world, no?
Any ideas?
Thanks
patPfeThe migration assistant or the original backup?
I tried WiFi, Ethernet and on the second attempt with a fresh backup on a USB drive. -
Why does migration assistant take so long to load?
I'm trying to set up a new Mac mini with info from old Mac mini. How long am I supposed to wait for this to work? I've tried 5 times via wireless and Ethernet. It spends 30 plus minutes gathering info. How long should it take? What is the best way to do this? (I'm not buying a FireWire cable that connects old style and new)
Your best bet is to use +Setup Assistant+ when your new Mac first starts up. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If you've already set up a user account on the new Mac, see the "Second Chance" instructions in the green box.
It will be much faster and more reliable via FireWire.
Ethernet will take longer, but don't try wireless; it's notoriously slow and unreliable.
