Migration Assistant stops at very end

I just bought an iMac and have tried both with TimeMachine backup and direct Firewire Connection to my G4 PowerMac to use Migration Assistant - both times I end up with the following message at the VERY end while the message states something about transfering support applications:
"There Might Be A Problem With Your Network
The other MAC (or Time Machine) is not responding. Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. Also, make sure that your ethernet cables are still connected properly to your computer and to the network, or if using Airport, that the base station is in range and turned on."
The first time I canceled migration and had to set up a user account and everything - my old MAC stuff was there, but I was not my original user like I wanted to be.
Any ideas?

if your home directory migrated that's all you need to worry about. set up the new user as it prompts you to and then check system preferences->accounts. if your old user is listed there it migrated successfully. try logging in as the migrated user. if it works, delete the temp user you've had to set up. If your migrated user is not listed in account preferences, create it using the same exact short user name as you had before. you'll get a popup saying that a home directory by that name already exists. say "yes".

Migration assistant stopped working as the PC info was being transferred from was turned off during the migration and now I can't restart it with the screen on the Mac showing transfer progress being frozen and on the PC it says it can't find the Mac

You didn't state how old you Win PC was, only that it was running Win 8. From talks with people I know that use Windows they would never upgrade a 4 year old PC to Win 8. Especially if it was already running Win 7.
So I, wrongly, Assumed you had a newer notebook that came with Win 8.
Right Content and Data (Like your PERSONAL files which is what I stated above) is the only thing that can be used on Mac from a Windows PC. No programs or settings can be carried over from a Windows PC to a Mac running OS X.
Good luck and all the best to you.

Well, thanks for your reply LowLuster. Although it wasn't helpful, it sure was interesting to hear that you know what content and data  resided on my 'new' Sony Vaio. BTW: In my opinion a 4 year old laptop hardly is to be considered 'new'.

  • Migration assistant stopped working and has left me with 100gb in 'other'? How do I delete 'other' and what is it exactly?

I recently invested $2000 (one week ago) in a Macbook Pro Retina 2014 2.8ghz 512gb. Dont get me wrong, I am in love with my product and am extremely satisfied but I have honestly encountered nothing but issues.
My first issue was the transferring of data from my 2010 white macbook 500gb. Both laptops have Yosemite installed and are 100% up to date but I have spent the last week getting them to talk to each other. I am not new to the workings of Apple but I have never endeavoured to use applications such as airdrop, migration assisstant or even bluetooth.
My first attempt was to transfer 200gb of files (Photos mainly, I'm a photographer) to my other laptop via a 64gb USB in segments. But after an hour and only 10gb getting copied across, I decided other alternatives may be of more help.
That is when I came to my first dilemma: AIRDROP. Airdrop is crazy. Yes I did click the option on my retina to search for older macs and yes they did connect. I can send files from my MBR to my white macbook 2010 immediately but my old macbook will not send files to my retina. Yes all of the necessary sharing settings are in place - both MacBooks have the same settings selected so I cannot figure out what to do. Information on this subject would also be helpful yet it is not the end of my troubles.
    Second Issue: Migration Assistant.
So yesterday I discovered this little 'gem'. I am a very impatient person so you can imagine i did not appreciate 20 hours of file transfers (via wifi as i do not have a thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor for MBR). Anyway that's all well and good if it actually worked. But of course it did not. I followed apples instructions and I was down to my final 4 hours this morning when my MBR told me the connection was lost and to reconnect. It was making the loudest whirring noise like air coming from inside the hard drive or something. I freaked out. My $2000 machine should not be doing this. It was only a little bit warm; not hot but it was incredibly loud, I'm not sure how to describe it. Keep in mind this computer is brand new so please tell me: WHAT WAS THE SOUND?!?!?!?! AND WHY? what was wrong? what could I have possibly done wrong? My wifi WAS working because my desktop PC was connected. So i waited and waited. Of course I couldn't actually do anything without quitting airdrop and in the end that's just what I had to do. A lot of time wasted for such an unsuccessful cause.
That brings me to my final issue:
So after migration had.... "completed" or crashed or whatever you want to call it, I at least assumed some of the files had maybe copied over and i could just resume from where I left off last time somehow. Oh how stupid that assumption was. My user account did in fact copy over but not a single file copied. And yes, I did log into that user account to check. ANYWAY, I went onto "about this mac" to see my storage info (still being optimistic about my wasted 20 hours). SURPRISE SURPRISE: Yet another problem. I now have 100gb in "other". This macbook is brand new. I should not have any GB in other. I am so incredibly annoyed. HOW DO I DELETE OTHER?! (preferably without downloading software) and is there anything else of importance in other that i should be careful not to delete that is contained within other?
I am only 15 years old  and this was a massive investment for me so I treat my Macbook like a baby. And no, I'm not spoilt by my parents. I had to work at Subway for a year to earn $2000 - without spending a single cent (My wage is only $9.00AUD an hour so i essentially worked some 222 hours for this macbook). And I'm not crazy, I needed it for school.
Anyway I'm not impressed with apple. I have Applecare but they aren't open on the weekends or whenever I try to call so that hasn't exactly been helpful. PLEASE HELP ME.

Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the page that opens.
In the keychain list, an item named "System" should be listed. If it isn't, select File ▹ Add Keychain from the menu bar and add the following:
    /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
Now search in Keychain Access for the name of the wireless network (not the name of the router.) Double-click one of the items and check the box labeled Show password in the inspector window. You'll be prompted for your keychain password to confirm. Make a note of the network password. Then delete every "AirPort Network Password" in the search results. Quit Keychain Access.
Go back to the Network preference pane and recreate the Wi-Fi connection with the same settings as before. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

  • Migration assistant stops at 14 minutes remaining of "files to support applications"

Trying to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from my MacBook Pro to a new Mac Mini. Migration stops in the segment "Transferring files to support applications" with "About 14 minutes remaining." Then it stopped and sat there for almost 20 hours.
Believing that there was something wrong... I stopped the process and restarted it. Two hours later I was at the same point. It's now been 3 more hours and I still have "About 14 minutes remaining" again. Any ideas what I might try?

Followup t this. I've read several posts recommending using Firewire instead of Ethernet/WiFi. My mid 2008 laptop is running Mountain Lion, using migration asst. Mini end is a brand new I7 Quad core running (presumably) Mountain Lion, At this point no joy using either Ethernet or Wifi. But there is no option for anything else. The setup assistant on the Mini insists on either Ethernet or WiFi. No other options are presented.
I've tried this like 6 times now and I make it to between 11-14 minutes of completion before it hangs. I'm going to have to do some stuff to generate a Time Machine BU I guess and try that...

  • Migration Assistant Stops Responding

Attempting to migrate Applications from a Mac Pro to a Mac Mini Server using Migration Assistant. The units pair and hand shake fine, the transfer appears to begin, then an error message appears: "Your other Mac stopped responding," and the transfer must be cancelled. Why?
Both units OS 10.8.1. This fail occured over my home network, direct CAT6 ethernet connection and wireless -- same result. Emphasize they do pair properly. Numeric code is generated, recieved and confirmed. The list of possible items to transfer appears, and before calculation of size of files is complete, the error code occurs. Both units have drives set to Never turn off.
Is this the bug 10.8.1 was supposed to fix?

Apple support note from last month shows an issue with OS 10.8.1 and Migration Assistant if "Back to My Mac" is enabled on the destination Mac. My destination mac is a Mac Mini Server, and although "Back to My Mac" is not enabled, Remote Management is enabled. That might be our issue. Will experiment and advise.

Try running Disk Utility on the old Mac and repairing permissions.

  • Populating MacBook with Migration Assistant?

I've just received a new (to me) MacBook as I upgrade from an older iBook. The MacBook arrived with Lion and MS Office 2011 installed. I used Migration Assistant to move my user files over to the MacBook. All I wanted to do was move these from one machine to the other. Instead, I've ended up with essentially two computers on one. When I boot up I'm greeted with two icons, the MacBook and the iBook. I have to select which to open and use the appropriate password. My documents file on the MacBook is empty, but if I open the iBook icon, everything is there. That's no what I wanted - I don't want to have to be constantly moving between machines, while on the same machine! How do I undo this mess I've made???
And while I'm at it. I wanted to move some of my apps over - like my Adobe CS apps so I could keep the settings rather than do a clean install. But I don't want to move my oder MS Office 2008 apps - woried these would delete the newer 2011 apps???  Worse I'll end up with MSOffice 08 on the iBook partition and Office '11 on the MacBook.  MA apparently won't let me select specific apps to move, and I don't want to delete them from the older iBook, so any suggestions?
How do I undo this ibook/macbook mess I've created on the MacBook? Then can I move selected apps over (or can I at least move all apps and then delete the older ones I don't want on the MacBook?)

Make every effort NOT to use a network connection in order to perform a migration. It is very much preferable to use a Time Machine backup. It will be much faster, and less prone to difficulties. More info here.
There is a silver lining to your difficulty. It has permitted you this chance.
BTW, is this a new Macbook Air? If so, Setup Assistant would be the way to go. I would even consider a re-install of OS X if the unit has nothing on it. Migration Assistant will in the end take longer, and be more of a headache for this one situation. This only applies to a brand new unit.

  • Migration assistant keeps crashing?!

Okay, I need urgent help before I pull ALL my hair out.
I recently bought a new Macbook Pro Retina and am trying to do a migration from my old Macbook Pro (2010) to the new one.
Every single time the migration assistant stops on the NEW Macbook Pro while checking for data. I get past the password stage all fine, then it starts to check and closes and logs me out of the account so I have to log back in and start all over. Super frustrating!
    I've tried the following solutions:
    - Ensuring all software/updates are up to date
    - Allowing guest account on the new MBP to access shared files/folders
    - Connect by ethernet cable
    - Connect by wifi
    - Tried repairing permissions in Disk Utility
    PLEASE HELP !!

See the green box here -> http://pondini.org/OSX/SetupLion.html.
Follow the instructions to get a 'do-over' using Setup Assistant.
    Good luck,

  • New iMac Question - Rosetta & Migration Assistant

I'm getting a new 27-inch iMac in the next few days but I have a couple of questions beforehand. I still need to use some Rosetta-based apps so will I have to install Rosetta on the new 27-inch iMac or is it already pre-installed? Seems to me that I've read somewhere that Rosetta is a "custom-install" with Snow Leopard.
This leads me to the next question about the Migration Assistant. I will need to transfer my data from the old hard drive to the new 27-inch iMac. The easiest way being with the Migration Assistant. In the past, when I've bought a new Mac and right after connecting the new Mac and my old Mac together via FireWire and starting the new Mac up for the first time, I've just transferred the data right away before even setting up a new user account on the new Mac. But if I do this now and Rosetta isn't yet installed, will my old apps and related files be transferred properly?
I guess what I'm getting at is this - should I boot the new 27-inch iMac up first, then install Rosetta (if an install is needed), then set up a user account on the new 27-inch iMac and then run the Migration Assistant to transfer data from the old hard drive? Or should I just run the Migration Assistant on the very first startup of the new 27-inch iMac and transfer the data right away?
I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any help you can offer. I'm trying to plan this out properly in advance and I don't want to mess anything up.
    Gerard

I know this was long ago - a day or 2 after July 3, 2009 (purchase date of our iMac) - but here is what happened:
Connected old computer (eMac) to new iMac to start "Migration" software. Waiting for boot and recognition extremely long.
Choices came up to migrate EITHER software or files.
I swear I selected "files" but it migrated software, over an enormous time.
Takes too long to migrate, so when I discovered no files were transferred, I went to old computer to copy data to DVD and "migrate" manually.
Went through that process on eMac; DVD burned; eject DVD and take to iMac.
I "trashed" the folders from the eMac (they were not needed on the old computer).
Guess what? The DVD DID NOT burn all the folders that I told it to burn.
Data lost: Several years of tax information! Teaching files! I don't even know what else!
Best of all, after talking to a certified Apple technician who happens to be a friend, he doesn't think there is any way to recover that data.
Why in the **** would I migrate applications (is that legal?) to a new computer?! That software's FIRST focus should be to preserve DATA, also known as FILES.
I know that I made some errors in this - - ERRORS IN CONFIDENCE IN APPLE!
Can you help? Can you send me software to recover my files? Can I have it today or tomorrow? That's when I need the info for my tax filing and FAFSA applications for 2 (TWO!) children to go to college next year.

  • Migration Assistant- Why didn't my pictures&music transfer?

I don't own an ethernet cable, so I decided that I would use my high-speed internet to transfer my documents, photos, and music from my (3-year)old Macbook to my new one. However, it took exactly 24 hours. Apparently, it took 24 hours to only transfer my documents folder (which only has about 100 text files that don't contain that much)
Besides the fact that it took so long, I found out that the user from my old computer was locked. I dragged the user into MY documents, and I was able to view my old documents. However, NONE of my pictures (I have around 11,000...) or my music (900 songs) were to be found, despite the insane amount of time it took to transfer.
*Why didn't my pictures and music transfer?*
*Is there and easier way to migrate your information that DOESN'T take a full day?*
Also, *how do I unlock the files* without doing the whole copying process again? For some reason the copying to MY documents allowed me to open them, but its going to be a hassle re-copying all my photos etc. once they've been transferred next time.

    katy652 wrote:
I don't own an ethernet cable,
Get one. Better yet, if both Macs have FireWire ports, get a FireWire cable.
Or, if you have Time Machine backups or a "clone" of the old Mac on an external drive, transfer from it instead.
Then start over, but use +Setup Assistant+ this time. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum). You'll want to start with the green box there.
The problem with using the +Migration Assistant+ is that you end up with an extra user account. And sometimes the accounts transferred that way aren't recognized as the same ones, thus the permissions problems.

  • KMC Migration Tool stopped. How to restart avoiding the finished steps?

    Hi,
I'm using KMC Migration Tool for upgrading EP 6.0 SP 2 (6.20) to EP NW04 SPS15 (6.40). We have experienced some network problems, and the process of DB migration has stopped between the end of the migration of task AP - completed suscesfully (the last step of the Migration the DataBase, many hours!!) - and the begining of the synchronization the fsdb Repositories (only a few minutes). When I tried to restart the process of DB migration, the KMC Migration tool tried restarting all the migration tasks from the begining of the DB Migration.
How to restart avoiding the finished steps? How can I avoid to repeat the migration of the DB from the begining, especially if it has executed suscesfully? Can I synchronize the FSDB repositories manually at the end of the EP migration? How can I do it?
If I had to restart the process, is it necessary to restore the target DB, or the process does not insert records from the last execution?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Best regards,

    Hi,
CM repositories in FSDB mode can have a manual backup before configuring the local root. The XML file provides the description of behaviors and persistence levels for the file system. To have a manual backup the auto sync has to be deactivated or else there will  be a  huge meta data loss.
what i feel is like you have to restore the DB before manual bacup(.if the Auto sync is activated). However, i dont  think so  that you can resume the migration.
    Regards,
    Anand

  • HT4796 Migration assistant had stopped with 17 minutes to go

Migrations assistant from windows laptop to my new Mac book Pro , mountain lion, has stopped with 17 minutes still to go! Any help appreciated.

I suspect it's failing due to two things, you didn't use Setup Assistant to Migrate and the eithernet connection. When you use Setup Assistant (this only runs when OS is turned on for the first time) that seems to be more reliable than MA. MA will create a second user account where Setup Assistant will make your new machine look just like the old one. Next many people that try using an ethernet cable have the same problem, why I have no idea.
If you want to use SA you will need to reformat your HD and reinstall OS X and it will prompt you to migrate towards the end of the installation. If you just got the computer and don't have too much new stuff on it this may be something to think about.

  • HT1408 I have just purchased a mac book pro.  I've linked this to my windows pc to transfer the data from my windows to my mac using the migration assistant.  The serial code comes up on both computers but having commenced transfer it then stops!  why?

I have tried to transfer data from my old Windows PC to my new MacBook Pro via Ethernet cable.  The function starts to download and then aftera  while it stops unexpectedly and both computers say they are "trying to reconnect">  This transfer  has failed on three attempts so far. What am I doing wrong?  Help please.   I am simlply tyring to transfer my itunes library and photos to the new Mac.

Forget Migration Assistant. Just copy the files you want to transfer to an External drive and then move that drive to the Mac and copy them over to the Mac. Does matter what the external drive format is as OS X can read from NTFS, Windows, formatted drives.

  • Is it possible to stop migration assistant midway? would it harm either of the machines?

I am migrating from macbook air to macbook pro, and migration assistant has been showing 9 hours!
unable to wait for so long, and I do not see any option to stop it. Is there any way I can stop it? Would it cause any damage to either of the macs?
    Please help!

Just turn off both Macs. No damage will be caused, but you should remove the migrated user on the MacBook Pro in order to free up space.
If you have any performance problem, you can use Internet Recovery to format the hard drive and reinstall OS X.
