Migration to WAS 6.40

Hello,
How can I migrate from application which is using webservices and was developed on BEA Weblogic to WAS 6.40 ?
Is it possible ? I think that WAS 6.40 doesn's support now full 1.4 compliants, so is a webservices occurence in application case that needs, recoding ? or the implementation of webservice support in WAS 6.40 follows 1.4 standart ?
Thanks for any help,
Best regards,
Miroslav Koskar

Hi Mirsolav,
yes, SAP Web AS 6.40 supports Web Services both at runtime and design time.  The tools support creation of Web Services from Java beans and session EJBs with a bunch of configuration options.
Have a look at: <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/d6/f9bc3d52f39d33e10000000a11405a/frameset.htm">Providing and Consuming Web Services</a> on http://help.sap.com.
This site also contains a list of the currently supported Web Service related standards.
Best regards,
Rudi
SAP Platform Ecosystem
btw.: you are right, SAP Web AS 6.40 supports J2EE 1.3, a spec that does not require Web Service support. But since Web Services are key to SAP we have been providing Web Service functionality even since SAP Web AS 6.20.

  • Migration from WAS 5.1 to WAS 6.1

    Hi All,
I am trying to migrate our project from WAS 5.1 (WSAD 5.1 to RAD 7 as IDE) to WAS 6.1.
Our project needs digital certificate to connect to Mainframe through a middleware.
After importing the project to RAD 7 and running it. When ever I log in I get the exception:
    to host https://domain.name.com
java.net.SocketException: Default SSL context init failed: IBMKeyManager: Problem accessing key store java.io.IOException: DerInputStream.getLength(): lengthTag=109, too big.

Could any one tell me if I need new certificate for WAS 6.1? Does it has to anything with JDK version as WSAD 5.1 is using JDK 1.3 and RAD 7 is using compiler version 1.5.
I really appreciate if some one could provide information realted to this issue.

Lion should be running Safari 6. Try Software update. Or apply the Lion 10.7.4 Combo installer:

  • Context Root problem migrating from WAS 4.0.4 to WAS 5.11

    Hi,
Hopefully this is the most appropriate forum, apologies if not.
I have a problem in migrating an application from WAS 4.0.4 to WAS 5.11, whereby the Context Path of the application is not being included within the URL of a servlet.
When a user submits one of the application forms (presented as a JSP) and the application is running on WAS 4.0.4, the Form Action URI is "re-written" to include the Context Path of the application i.e. where the URI is "/xx/list.html", the domain is "www.mydomain.com" and the Context Path is "/myapp", on the 4.0.4 server the form submission is redirected to:
    www.mydomain.com/myapp/xx/list.html
However, once deployed on WAS 5.11 and updating the Context Path in the EAR file as required during deployment, the application redirects to:
    www.mydomain.com/xx/list.html
...which causes an HTTP 404 error as you might expect.
I have included debugging to display the context path at the point of submission and it is what you would expect i.e. "/myapp". The problem seems to be some kind of disconnect between the servlets or application and the application server container(?), perhaps in that it doesn't understand the context in which it exists at the point when the URL is being constructed.
Can anyone give me some pointers as to why the servlet URL isn't being constructed with the Context Path of the application on WAS 5.11 when it is on WAS 4.0.4 please?
    Thanks in advance
    Jon Sumpster

    I found the problem.
The default value of the 'com.ibm.websphere.sendredirect.compatibility' variable changed from True in WAS 4.0.4 to False in WAS 5.11. Changing this resolved the problem.

    Jon

Yolu have posted in the PPC area, and if you do, in fact, have a PPC, you can't migrate to Lion, it only works on intel machines.  In addidition, you need to be running Snow Leopard (10.6.x) if you have an intel in order to install Lion.

  • Where is the list of files that the migration assistant was unable to copy located?

The Migration Assistant successfully finished transferring most of my information between my old MBP and my new rMBP, even thought the "less than a minute remaining" actually took several hours, even using Thunderbolt cables.
At the end of the migration, the Migration Assistant displayed a message "not all of your files could be transferred".
Where is the log containing the list of files that couldn't be transferred?
The only system log entries relating to the migrations system are of the "2/27/15 9:17:14.000 AM kernel[0]: Process systemmigrationd [546] disabling system-wide CPU Throttling" variety.

  • VM stays in Status Stopping after live migration failed/was canceled

I have a hyper-v Cluster running on Windows 2012 r2. I tried a live Migration from one node of Cluster to another node of the same Cluster. It got stuck by around 65% (if remembered correctly). After 45 minutes nothing has changed so I canceled the Job in
the Failover Cluster Manager. The VM went into a Status of "Stopping". After 5 hours it is still in Status "stopping". I haven't found any Information on why it got stuck on the 65% and have just found the error message that the Job got
canceled using Failover Cluster Manager events. But nothing saying why it stays in "Stopping" Status. Searched the Internet but I have Trouble finding anything related to the issue I see.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Saren90,
Please try to disable the process "vmwp.exe " corresponding to the VM in host's task manager.

  • Migration from WAS 6.4 to 7.0

My project is at NW04. But i have to move on 7.0.
I have installed new developper studio 7.0 but when i build the project the is much warning message like.
    1)
      a) Warning   The method addColumn(IWDTableColumn) from the type IWDTable is deprecated
      b) The method destroy() from the type IWDWindow is deprecated
      c) The method getFileName() from the type IWDModifiableBinaryType is deprecated
      d) Do not navigate to Inbound Plugs with type startup. The behaviour of this plug type will change
    2) And one major issue that some node attribute data from parent window to popup window is not trasfered when cliked on any link to open popup window. I have did this through context maping of node from one DC to popup DC by component controller node.
    3) Is LinkToAction(event onselect) property need to change in 7.0?
Please help me to know how to solve these warning and error issuse for move on 7.0.
Also it will be great help that any one can provide me any ppt that what all dprecated class is when move into 7.0 and how to fix any old implementation.
    Thanks
    Arun

    Welcome to SDN Arun!
I will try to give some help.
    1)
    a)     I think this is in internal classes, you can ignore this.
    b)     Window.destroyInstance();
    c)     You need to use getResource()  of IWDResource instead of  getFileName() of IWDModifiableBinaryType.
    d)     I think you can ignore this too
    2) The data must be transferred(same) if we use context mapping for all views and controllers. But if you use DC-Dc communication then the data whichever you want to transfer that must be available in the Interface controller of  the used DC.
    3) No need to change LinkToAction event
Check this   [wiki|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/wiki?path=/display/wdjava/deprecatedMethodsinNWDS7.0andabove] if it is useful to you.

  • Migration from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 Problems

In trying to upgrade to 10.5 on a MacBook Pro 17" - 2.16 GHz Intel, I had problems. Apple genius found I needed a new hard drive. Computer returned from Apple with a new hard drive and OS 10.5.8 and seemed to be working fine (Keyboard and Airport access normal).
I had a recent clone (Carbon Copy Cloner) with OS 10.4.11 that boots and works fine. I used Repair Disk and Repair Permissions on the Clone with OSX 10.4 install disk. (everything seemed ok) I used Repair Disk and Repair Permissions on the clean install using OSX 10.5 install disk. Repair was clean, Repair Permissions continued to show some mismatched permissions after 2 tries (all in parts of the OSX 10.5 clean install with no new apps or files added). NOW MY PROBLEM.
Using Migration Assistant, I brought just my Home Account folder (with a name not used in the clean Install), all the Apps, Files and Folders, (Library was checked and grayed out) with all Network Settings, Time Zone, and Shared Settings. The Migration seemed to go well. I booted up and it seemed OK. I opened Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Powerpoint and put them in the Doc. I did the same for Microsoft Work, Excel, and Powerpoint. All seemed normal. I needed to go to the Internet and found that I could not. Airport could not see my networks. It seemed to be OFF and not want to accept the Turn Airport ON click. I rebooted my network modem and Airport Extreme and rebooted the computer. This time the Keyboard wouldn't work - a problem I had earlier when I tried to install 10.5 directly onto my 10.4.11 computer.
I attached an external keyboard. After identifying it, all works fine from the external keyboard. However, Airport still doesn't turn on. The migration also seems to have seriously changed things in my Network Settings - even hardwired - and won't let me get to the internet even hardwired to my cable modem. If I go back and boot up on the 10.4.11 clone, all works well.
Using the 10.5 install disk, I tried Repair Disk, but my volume could not be unmounted. I did Verify Disk and the volume appeared to be OK. I Repaired Permissions and I get hundreds of "Group differs" for Application Support with hp plug-ins (I use an HP multi-function) - "should be 80, group is 20". There were also "Permissions differ" with what appears to be the same issues I had on the clean Install - /"Airport Base Station Agent.app", "Airport utility", Front Row", "Private Frameworks/Back Row.Framework", "ITunes.app", . It comes back "Permission Repair Complete". A follow-up Permissions repair, showed no problems and reported "Permissions Repair Complete."
When I bootup on the 10.5.8 OS, I still can't use the keyboard and can't get to either Airport or a hardwire connection to my cable modem. Back to the clone, it's all fine, but might need either (a connection to a neighbors network) or a reboot of my cable modem to get a valid IP address.
Is there anything else I can do to try to repair this besides a clean install of OS10.5? Either Migration Assistant did a corrupt migration or I have some 3rd party app(s) that are incompatible.
If I do a Clean Install, how can I best bring all the files from the Clone over to 10.5 without having to reinstall each one and track down the all the Serial Numbers (many on e-mails from years back)? Is there a list somewhere of 10.5 incompatibilities? Maybe I just need to erase or upgrade a file or two on the clone and the Migration will be a success. I have also heard that there may be issues with various Versions of 10.5.X that could make one work and then next upgrade not work. How do I even find the old revisions. Do I need to upgrade one at a time?
I really want to use 10.5, because it allows me to use some other recent updated software for work that would be helpful.
GOD BLESS CARBON COPY CLONER. I THINK IT'S TIME FOR ME TO DONATE.
Can anyone help me through this?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Baltwo,
Thanks. I'm not hopeful that what you suggest will work in this case. Initially, my system was working fine with 10.4.11. I cloned with CCC and then Installed 10.5 over the existing drive. The install appeared to go well, but on restart, the keyboard was not accepted. I installed all upgrades and repaired permissions using the 10.5 install disk. The keyboard still didn't work.
I took the computer to the Apple Genius bar and they were about to do an Archive and Install when they noted that my hard drive was "failing". So they went out and replaced the hard drive and installed 10.5.8. It appeared to work fine. I then used Migration Assistant from the clone to the new operating system. I now have the same problem with the keyboard not working on the 10.5.8 hard drive, but working fine when I boot up on the 10.4.11 clone.
My guess is that there is some 3rd party file or files that are compatible with 10.4.11 but not compatible with 10.5.8.
If, after repairing with DiskWarrior and Tech Tool Pro, I still have the problem, I'll try what you suggest, but I am not hopeful that it will work. When I clone back tot he 10.5 hard drive, it will bring any problem files with it.
The next step would be a clean install and then a drag and drop from the clone with a re-install on things that require it. That will be a major undertaking, but I am afraid that I may need to do it.
Do you have any suggestions for how to find what files might be incompatible with 10.5.8? Is there some way to migrate files in small groups? What if I used Time machine, so that I could easily go back if a Migration step was a problem?
Thanks again. Your suggestion is a good one and I'll try it, but I already have some indication that it won't work this time.
    Best Regards,
    Dave

  • Upgrade/Migrate 9.3.3 Planning apps to 11.1.2.2

I am in the next step of our upgrade from 9.3.3 to 11.1.2.2 and ready to migrate our Planning applications. I have read many of the posts related to this and have a general list of steps, but I have slightly different situation than what I have seen posted before.
To summarize, we have installed 11.1.2.2 on new servers.  Our old 9.3.3 is still up and running on different environment.  I have sucessfully completed the following:
    1.     Foundation Services/Shared Services installed and up and running and users/groups successfully migrated.
    2.     Essbase and EAS installed and up and running.  All Essbase applications (except for the Planning apps), have been successfully migrated from 9.3.3 to 11.1.2.2.
    3.     Planning has been installed and is up and running.  While there are no Planning apps in the new system, I can open the Planning Administrator via WorkSpace.
So the next step is to get my Planning apps moved/migrated from the 9.3.3 environment to the new 11.1.2.2.
To complicate matters, we are switching from SQL Server repository in 9.3.3 to Oracle in our new 11.1.2.2.  So the first thing we did was to create a new Oracle schema for our Planning app repository and using SQL Developer migrate wizard, we copied/migrated the tables and data from the old SQL Server to Oracle.  It appears that all the tables and data were successfully copied into Oracle.
Our old Planning application is called PlanTest. The application owner is a native user called planadm.  My intended migration plan (and my questions) are:
    1.     Do I create a new blank Planning app called PlanTest using native account planamd in 11.1.2.2?
    2.     If I use my new Oracle repository for this blank app, will it wipe out the old converted data or will it try to upgrade/migrate it?
    3.     Or..should I take a backup of my new converted repository first.  Then drop/recreate the Oracle Schema (so no tables) and let Planning build the repository when I create the blank Planning app?  Then capture the owner SID in the new HSP_USER table.  Stop Planning. Then overlay the database backup of 9.3.3 over the newly created repository and replace the owner SID info. Then Restart Planning.
** My concern:  Is the Planning app repository table structures the same between 9.3.3 and 11.1.2.2?
    4.     Open Planning and hope that the application PlanTest appears!
    5.     Use Planning upgrade Wizard to finish the migration and upgrade the repository.
    6.     Push/Create app to Essbase.
    7.     Export data from old app to .txt load file and reload into new Planning cube.
    8.     Convert/Migrate Business Rules using info from John's blog.
I am sure I missed something.  Any suggestions or comments on these steps would be appreciated.  Bottom line is I need to get this app (and several others) migrated successfully with all metadata, security, forms, rules etc. working.  Rebuilding them from scratch is NOT an option.
Also, to clarify.  This is a Classic Planning app.  We are not using EPMA.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Following the steps, the upgrade/migration of the Planning application worked successfully.  The app and forms were all migrated and was able to push to Essbase application successfully.  The only issue was security.  While the users/groups seem to appear in the migrated Planning app, none of their security access/filter info migrated.  We have Planning security defined down to the member level in the application and it appears none of that successfully migrated, so we would need to manually re-assign all of that security.  Any thoughts of what may have happend or step I may have missed?
Also have moved on to attempt migration of the Business Rules to Calc Manager.  Using John's 2nd alternative method from his blog, I export the rule from 9.3.3 EAS to HBRRules.xml file, copy it to the appropriate 11.1.2.2 folder, select "Migrate" on the PlanTest planning app in Calc Manager, select the app and Plan type and all seems well with the Import screen even indicating that the Rule and variables were Inserted.  But I never see the rule appear.  Could this be an "owner" issue or is there something I need to do to the .xml file before the migration step?

  • Migration Assistant overwrote my life - can I get it back?

    Hi folks
This experience constitutes my first real Mac burn, and I'm not going to lie, it hurts.
Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to move from my Mac Pro to my new MacBook Pro.  I had already been using the MacBook Pro, and had gotten my media life up and running on it with 300+ gigs of music and about 50 gigs of photos.  My research on this forum before doing the migrate suggested that nothing would be overwritten.
Instead, everything associated with the user account I'd been slowly building anew on the MacBook Pro was overwritten with whatever was in my old Mac Pro.  All I wanted was for the files, applications, and application settings to be added to my new system, not to overwrite it completely.
Does anyone know if I can reverse this process.  I admit to foolishly not backing up the MacBook before migrating - I have always backed up my content manually, so have never used Time Machine to backup my actual system.  I have backups of everything that was overwritten, but I had intentionally removed it from the Mac Pro in order to start afresh on the MacBook.  Will I need to start afresh again, or can I somehow reclaim everything from the MacBook user account that was overwritten.
In addition, the two computers had the same name, so when I was asked to rename one I chose to rename the old system with the suffix "crap" thinking I would have no further use for it, because I assumed the MacBook I was migrating to would never be overwritten.  Instead, I'm now stuck with a crappy name. I would like to change it.
Any help with this mess would be great.
I have to say that my experience with Migration Assistant was wretched. It took me a day to get the two computers actually communicating in order to do the migrate.  The estimates of time to completion were preposterously off - it took over an hour to complete the last "less than a minute".  And the purpose and actions of the program were very poorly indicated.  I did not just jump into this, but spent hours reading up, only to wreak utter havoc on my digital life.
A sad day in my life with Mac.

Sorry to hear about the mess - I had a similar experience last year. The problem with MA is that you have already established an account, etc, etc - so you wind up with overwritten or - in my case - duplicate accounts and/or folders, messed up permissions, and the list goes on.
However, Setup Assistant, which is only offered once - right after the welcome screen when you first boot up the new Mac - will simply port over everything and should work just fine (althought they are both essentially the same procedure, the huge difference is that if you use SA, you don't have anything set up on the new Mac yet).
So, the easiest would be (as long as you still have everything on your old Mac): insert install disk on the new Mac, after selecting language, to to Utilities at top, choose Disk Utility, and erase your hard drive. Once done, let Installer start and have a firewire cable ready. After the welcome screen, follow the on screen instructions for Setup Assistant and you should be fine.

  • Manually migrating iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion..

    Hi all,
I received a shiny new iMac yesterday and in my haste to get it up and running, I began to run the migration assistant on wi-fi.  Unfortunately, my 2006 macbook model is so old that my firewire cables don't actually fit the firewire port on the back of the iMac!!
11 hours later, there was still 40 hours left to go.  At this point I manually quit the migration assistant. Partly because I have to work and to work I need to use a computer and partly because I realised that I don't want all the old crud from my previous system.. all I want is my iTunes (songs, apps, playlists etc) and my iPhoto to migrate.
The original admin account that the migration assistant was going to replace was still there.  Everything seems to be working fine... I did a quick repair of disk permissions and all seems fine.   So, I think I flirted with danger by quiting the migration assistant, but danger doesn't seem to have flirted back.
I've searched high and low on the web and I can't find any advice on migrating just your iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion.  I did read a post somewhere (relating to a migration to Leopard) where someone wrote that, for iPhoto, you simply had to replace your iPhoto Library in your pictures folder on the destination machine and then simply start iPhoto.  iPhoto would upgrade the databases etc and all would be fine in the world.  I cannot find a post online that suggests that this is also the case for Lion.
Can anyone here give me some hints on how to manually migrate the iPhoto and iTunes libraries over (and still preserve playlists in iTunes, albums/events in iPhoto etc)?
I figure that I cannot be the only person in the world who wants a "fresh start" on their machine, with the exception of iPhoto and iTunes.

Resident apple gurus at work have advised me to use the migration assistant and plug an ethernet cable between machines.
I'll give this a go and then go through the process of removing and cleaning up whatever old data I can.. but if someone posts a response to this question for me, I'll happily roll back in time-machine and go again in a cleaner way. :-)

  • Login error after migration from Snow Leopard to Lion

I went through the migration process to get all settings and data over from my MacBook (10.6.8) to my new Mac Pro (10.7.3). During the migration, I was logged into the old MacBook with my FileVault-enabled account. Migration completed successfully, but when I tried to log into the new Mac Pro, I got this error:
"You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account "user1" at this time. Log in to the account failed because an error occurred." [OK]
When I typed a password I knew was incorrect, the login box would do the familiar shaking. When I typed the correct password, I got the behavior above.
I was able to log in to the new Mac Pro as a different user (user2), even though user2 also had FileVault enabled on the old system.
When logged in as user2 on the new system, I was able to escalate privileges by authenticating as user1, so I knew the password for user1 was working. I gave user2 admin privileges and saw that user1's data had been copied over, but not as a sparsebundle - presumably because user1 was logged in at the time of migration.
To fix the login problem, I did the following:
    1) Logged in as user2 on both source and target system, then escalated privs to give  user2 admin rights.
    2) Copied /Users/user1/user1.sparsebundle from source to target system:
         - On target system, in System Preferences -> Sharing, enabled Remote Login for user2
         - On source system, opened Terminal window and typed:
         $ sudo -s
         > [password for user2]
         # cd /Users/user1
         # scp -rp user1.sparsebundle user2@IP_address:
(where IP address is the actual IP address of the target system)
         > [password for user2]
    3) Moved aside the unencrypted files in user2's home directory:
         - On target system, logged in as user2, in Terminal:
         $ sudo -s
         > [password for user2]
         # chown -R user1 ~/user1.sparsebundle
         # mkdir /tmp/user1
         # chown user1 /tmp/user1
         # cd /Users/user1
         # mv * /tmp/user1
         # mv .[a-zA-Z]* /tmp/user1
    4) Moved the user1.sparsebundle into place (in same Terminal window on target system):
         # chown -R user1 ~/user1.sparsebundle
         # mv ~/user1.sparsebundle /Users/user1
    5) Logged out of user2 account and logged back in as user1
    6) Securely deleted the unencrypted files for user1 (in Terminal window as user1):
         $ srm -rf /tmp/user1
Many thanks to @neirbowj for the analysis of why the migration failed!

Go get a powered USB hub and try that. Lion may have issued a fix for devices drawing too much power, by cutting them off.

  • I migrated all of my photos from my PC to my mac but I can't find them on my laptop!?

    Hi
I hope someone can help me. It took hours on end to successfully migrate my photos and documents from my Windows PC to my new MacBook. (I'm a professional photographer)
When The Migration Assistant was completed, I closed the window and went to my documents and... cannot find ANY of the files that I migrated over?   The instructions said something along the lines of I'd find all of my files and documents where I'd expect to... um... I can't find ANY!
    Please help
    Thank you

How did you do your migration? Did you follow Apple support article and check help menu for tips?
Note: This process will create a new user account on your Mac to contain the Windows PC information that is migrated over.  It will not merge the information with an existing user account on the Mac.

Before you did so, did you use Windows Easy Transfer? do you have your files on external or on a drive you can connect?
The best utility driver to mount PC NTFS drivers comes from Paragon-Software.
Apple only has read only support and more limited as well.

  • Migrating large project from DSC 7.1 to LabView 2009 Shared Variables ... What's the next step after recreating my variables?

I am in the process of migrating a large distributed (multi-workstation) automation system from the LabVIEW 7.11 DSCEngine on Windows XP to the LabVIEW 2009 Shared Variable Engine on Windows 7.
I have about 600 tags which represent data or IO states in a series of Opto22 instruments, accessible via their OptoOPCServer. There are another 150 memory tags which are used so the multiple workstations can trade requests and status information to coordinate motion and process sequencing.  Only one workstation may be allowed to run the Opto22 server, because otherwise the Opto22 instruments are overwhelmed by the multiple communications requests; for simplicity, I'll refer to that workstation as the Opto22 gateway.
The LabVIEW 2009 migration tool was unable to properly migrate the Opto22 tags, but with some help from NI support (thank you, Jared!) and many days of pointing and clicking, I have successfully created a bound shared-variable library connecting to all the necessary data and IO.  I've also created shared variables corresponding to the memory tags. All the variables have been deployed.
So far, so good. After much fighting with Windows 7 network location settings,  I can open the Distributed System Manager on a second W7/LV2009 machine (I'll refer to it as the "remote" machine henceforth) and see the processes and all those variables on the Opto22 gateway workstation. I've also created a few variables on the remote workstation and confirmed that I can see them from the gateway workstation.
Now I need to be able to use (both read and write) the variables in VIs running on the remote workstation machine. (And by extension, on more remote workstations as I do the upgrade/migration).
I have succeeded in reading and writing them by creating a tag reader pointed at the URL for the process on the Opto22 gateway. I can see a way I could replace the old DSC tag reads and writes in my applications using this technique, but is this the right way to do this? Is this actually using the Shared Variable Engine, or is it actually using the DataSocket? I know for a fact that attempting to manipulate ~800 items via Datasocket will bog down the systems.
I had the impression that I should be able to create shared variables in my project on the remote workstation that link to those on the Opto22 gateway workstation. When, however, I try to browse to find the processes on that workstation, I get an error saying that isn't possible.
Am I on the right track with the tag reader? If not, is there some basic step I'm missing in trying to access the shared variables I created on the gateway workstation?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have found the answer to part of my question -- an relatively easy way to create a "remote" library of shared variables that connect to the master library on my gateway workstation.
Export the variables from the master library as a csv file and copy that to the remote machine.
Open the file on the remote machine (in excel or the spreadsheet app of your choice) and (for safety's sake) immediately save it with a name marking it as the remote version.
Find the network path column (it was "U" in my file).
replace the path for each variable (which will be either a long file path or a blank, depending on the kind of variable) with \\machine\'process name'\variable name
where machine is the name or ip address of the master (gateway) workstation (I used the ip address to make sure it uses my dedicated automation ethernet network rather than our building-wide network)
and process name is the name of the process with the deployed variables visible in the Distributed System Manager on the gateway machine.
NOTE the single quotes around the process name; they are required.
The variable name is in the first ("A") column, so in Excel, I could do this for line 2 with the formula =CONCATENATE("\\machine\'process name'\",A2)
Once the formula worked on line 2, I could copy it into all the other lines.
    Save the CSV file.
Import the CSV into the remote library to create the variables.
Note: at this point, if you attempt to deploy the variables, it will fail. The aliases are not quite set properly yet.
Open the properties for the first imported variable.
There is probably an error message at the bottom saying the alias is invalid.
In the alias section, you'll see it is set to "Project Variable" with the network path from step 4.
Change the setting to "PSP URL" with the same path and the error message should disappear.
Close the properties box, save the library, and then export the variables to a new CSV file.
Open the new CSV file in Excel, and scroll sideways to the NetworkrojectBound field.
You'll notice it is False for the first variable, and true for the rest. Set the field FALSE for all lines in the spreadsheet.
Scroll sideways... you'll notice there are two new columns between NetworkrojectPath and Network:UseBinding
The first one is NetworkingleWriter; it should already be FALSE for all lines.
The second one is Network:URL. That needs to be set equal to the value for each line of NetworkrojectPath.
You can accomplish this with a formula like in step 4. In Excel it was =U2 for line 2, and then cut and paste into all lines below it.
There is a third new field, Path, which should already be set to the location of the variable library. You don't need to do anything with it.
    Save the edited CSV file.
Go back to the remote library, and import variables from the just-edited remote library CSV file.
Once you have imported them and the Multiple Variable Editor opens, click on done.
You should now be able to deploy the remote variable library without error. (Make sure to open the Distributed System Manager and start the local variable engine. It took me a few failures before I realized I had to do that before attempting a deployment).
Voila! You now have a "remote" library of shared variables that references all the shared variables on the master machine, and which should be deployable on other machines with very little difficulty.
It actually took longer to write out the process here than to perform these steps once I figured it out.
