Minimum Client Install and Path to TNSNames.ora
1) What files are required for a minimum client install.
2) What is the route/path a program should take to find the tnsnames.ora (Environment variable, registry?) - i.e. how does one locate it?
Thanks
1) Go to http://otn.oracle.com, look for the Downloads link, select and download Instant Client, unzip the file anywhere and follow the 'install' instructions.
2) The TNSNAMES.ORA will be in each ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory
In addition, you could manually create a central one and use either the environment variable or registry entry TNS_ADMIN to locate that.
I generally use the Windows Explorer search capability to look for files.
You may want to review the Installation manual and/or the Administration manual for Windows. They do give this information and a lot more information relevant to your OS. These could be found at http://tahiti.oracle.com

TNS_ADMIN (path to tnsnames.ora) using Instant Client IGNORED
Hi,
I developed a simple utility which uses OCCI LIB from 10g release. I'm deploying it with Oracle Instant Client lite libraries.
Everything works fine when tnsnames.ora is present in the same dir. When I move it somewhere else and set TNS_ADMIN to that directory, it doesn't work anymore:
C:\uplob>set TNS_ADMIN=c:\tns;
C:\uplob>echo %tns_admin%
c:\tns;
C:\uplob>uplob u/p@xe 15 input.dat
Exception:12154 ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specif
ied
This seems very simple, but I still cannot determine why TNS_ADMIN is not being taken into account.
Thank you for any help with this issue,
davidI think for Windows ,
You may have to set this in MY-COMPUTER-->Advanced-Env-Variables
and reboot to take effect.

Configuring Clients to Share Net80 Configuration (TNSNAMES.ORA)
I'd like to setup all client net80 connections to share a
TNSNAMES.ORA file. I have tried adding the regestry key
TNS_ADMIN to HKEY_CURRENT_USER|ENVIORNMENT key but
have had no success. Not sure if it should be entered as
a environment variable, I added TNS_ADMIN to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|SOFTWARE|Oracle|HOME0 and still had no
success.
The client machines are Windows 2000. Has anyone configured
this?
Any help would be appreciated.
TammyI found the problem... actually it was working, just not from
Oracle's Administrator Toolbar (which was what I was using to
test the configuration). Strange.
Thanks. -
EA3 - show path to tnsnames.ora on connection panel?
If you select the TNS connection type, you are presented with the network alias and
connection identifier entries.
Just below this, could you add the path to the tnsnames file that is currently being used?
That would be an excellent troubleshooting tool for somebody that might be picking up
a nonstandard tns file.
Oh, and a button that pops up "didn't we tell you you'd be causing trouble for yourself by insisting on maintaining your own tns file?" would be nice.Until we add it you can do this for now:
1) open any worksheet
2) enter this:
setloglevel oracle.dbtools.raptor.utils ALL
3) Run Script
This just sets the java.util.logging level for this class so you don't get all the noise of turning on debug for everything.
4) open the connection dialog.
This will give you in the Log window exactly what and where it's checking for tnsnames.xxx
the set

Client Install and Setup on work station
Hi all,
Is there anybody who knows how to install the client software on the work station, configure, connect to server and what are the pre requisites before you install the client software on the work station.
thanks
SV ReddyHi,
I do not know if you have set connection to server SBO.
You could test connection by ping the server IP or server name.
Also make sure that SQL server browser is started. You could start it from SQL server configuration manager --> SQL server 2005 services.
Open the SQL server 2005 Network configuration > protocols for server...> TCP/IP --> enabled and its properties, make sure the TCP port is 1433, named piped is also enabled. Check IP Address availability in TCP/IP properties --> IP address.
Once all of the settings completed, you install the SQL server native client in the client PC.
After finished it, just run -->
your server name or its IP address\B1-SHR, you can open B1-SHR folder, then look for client setup exe. Double click and installation process begins. You fill server name and its password that requested in one of the installation steps.

Creating a service ; What needs to be added to tnsnames.ora and JDBC url?
DB version: 11.2.0.2
OS platform : Solaris 10
We have a 2 node RAC.
DB name = mbsprd
Instance1 = mbsprd1
Instance2 = mbsprd2I want Instance 1 (mbsprd1) to be used for our OLTP application and Instance 2 (mbsprd2) to be used for another application of DSS nature.
Based on the syntax
srvctl add service -d <dbname> -s <ServiceName> -r <Preferred Instance> -a <Available Instance>I am going to create 2 services
-- Creating a service called OLTP
srvctl add service -d mbsprd -s OLTP -r mbsprd1 -a mbsprd2-- Creating a service called DSS
srvctl add service -d mbsprd -s DSS -r mbsprd2 -a mbsprd1-- Starting the services
srvctl start service -d mbsprd -s OLTP
srvctl start service -d mbsprd -s DSSI guess the above steps are enough to configure a service at the server side.
I would like to know what needs to be done at the client side.
Currently the tnsnames.ora file and JDBC url used by our clients are shown below. What needs to be added to tnsnames.ora file and jdbc URL to start using services configured above?

Oracle 8i clients, inconsistent handling of tnsnames.ora (ORA-06401 gotcha)
This is more of a bug report / oddity declaration than a real problem, though it was a pain in the butt to nail down. I post it here for the benefit of anyone else who may run into it down the road.
Using the linux sqlplus client, I kept getting consistent failures connecting to one of a dozen db's, but tests with the (java) netasst client worked fine. After various debugging of other potential causes, it came down to strace'ing the sqlplus client, and noting that it was attempting to connect to the wrong host, despite what was specified on the command line.
What we identified as the most probable cause:
The routines that load and parse the tnsnames.ora file differ between the linux and java clients, with the java client being more tolerant/robust. The tnsnames.ora file I'd been supplied with had come from a fellow user's Win32 machine, and had been edited there, which probably included a couple ^M's or other non-visible characters within the file.
The solution (at least, what I did):
Load the tnsnames.ora file with netasst, and save it again with netasst. Netasst wrote the file in a manner that sqlplus could read accurately, and I got to go have a beer.
- billnHi Fredrik,
You r right. But I have its entry in tnsnames.ora file. The entry looks like this -
My_Service_Name.world =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS =
(COMMUNITY = tcp.world)
(PROTOCOL = TCP)
(Server = Computer_Name_of_Server_having_Ora8i)
(Host = IP_Add_of_Server_having_Ora8i)
(Port = 1521)
(Pipe = ORAPIPE)
(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
The same entry exists in the tnsnames.ora file on the local PCs (same office where the Oracle 8i Server is present) at Site 1 and these PCs connect the server without any problem.
Thanks

Tnsnames.ora and listener.ora
I am studying oracle and came accross
tnsnames.ora and listener.ora file.
Can any one tell me in simplified terms about these 2 files. what are they and what exactly they do?When you are accessing Oracle over network you need a listerner service (usually on server box) and SQLNet or Net8 client on client machine. Listener.ora specifies the parameters for listener process and tnsnames.ora contains the SQLNet or Net8 connection informations about database server(s)

Sccm client v4 wont install and install client v5 - SCCM 2012 R2
Hi, I am coming to the end of a SCCM 2012 R2 client deployment. I have come across 2 machines (so far)that have the SCCM 2007 (v4) client installed, and although the task is set to uninstall from the server the v5 client will not installed. iI have been
using this an as template:
http://eskonr.com/2010/11/sccm-client-installation-troubleshooting-steps-check-list/
I have ran the install seperatelty from the server (boxed ticked - Uninstall existing Config Manager client) - No Install
The ccmsetup folder is created - c$\Windows\ccmsetup, but only has 3 files, no logs folder
Other machines on site has the v5 client
Checked ping from client to server and vice versa (no firewall enabled)
Boundaries/Schema/DNS - ok
Checked all local event logs.
i know you can run the local uninstall command, but as the network is vast i would like to fix to come from the server, rather than having to do this on the client.
Any tips would be great going forward.
SCCM 2012 R2 - Windows 7 Enterprise SP1Hi,
I ensured the account used for the install was in the local admins group.
From the ccm.log on the server, i got these erros, been googling but nothing yet:
---> ERROR: Unable to start service "ccmsetup" on machine "LCD12121", error = 1075. SMS_CLIENT_CONFIG_MANAGER 22/10/2014 12:01:43 1460 (0x05B4)

Also, is there a way to run a report on which machines dont have the sccm client/install issues?
Thanks -
Can't find tnsnames.ora
Hi,
I install Instant Client on Linux using rpm. I need to edit the tnsnames.ora, but I can't find it.
Can I copy one instance of tnsnames.ora and set TNS_ADMIN=<the path of tnsname.ora directory> as and enviornment variable on your client machine?
Thank youNo tnsnames.ora is included with Instant Client, you have to create (or copy, as you do) your own.
You did the right thing, TNS_ADMIN must point to the directory containing tnsnames.ora.
If you have an sqlnet.ora file, it must be in the same directory.

Client Install Issue - SCCM 2012 R2 - Manual Deploy Installed ok
Hello, I have sccm 2012 configured with 2,000 machine approx. It is been used mainly as a Software Deployment tool for now. On checking a recent IE10 upgrade, I noticed that there is a number of machines that do not have the client installed (and thus did
not upgrade IE). I picked 1 machine, searched in SCCM - had no client. I checked all relevant settings:
Boundary for Client in question - ok
Local Client Settings (ip,dns,no firewall, ping sccm ok and vice versa etc).
Once i right clicked to deploy the client, it installed no problem. I checked the ccmsetup log file and the only info it had was from the time that the client was manually deployed (I will attach the log below anyway). I am really puzzled as to why the client
did not install and if this is the issue why IE is not upgrading (it is hard to pinpoint as there are 250 sites approx). The automatic install task works no problem on other machines once the machine goes online.
Any help, would be great. Here is the log (I am fairly new to SCCM btw):

"tnsnames.ora" file & ODBC driver
It seems ODBC drivers do not need TNS listeners!
I need to find out how ODBC drivers determine the path of "tnsnames.ora" file!
(I have many Oracle installations on my machine.)
nullI believe that the ODBC driver will use the tnsnames file in the primary Oracle home. You can use the Oracle home selector to select your primary home.
Note that, at the moment, the Oracle ODBC driver is supported only when installed in a single Oracle home on a machine.

Can we share TNSNAMES.ORA
hi,
I would like to know if it is possible to share a tnsnames.ora on Oracle8.1.7 between several clients. We are using multiple databases and the file tnsnames.ora often changes.
Can we do it and how ?
Thank you if you have an answer. No tnsnames.ora is included with Instant Client, you have to create (or copy, as you do) your own.
You did the right thing, TNS_ADMIN must point to the directory containing tnsnames.ora.
If you have an sqlnet.ora file, it must be in the same directory.
Yours,

ODBC Driver needs TNSNAMES.ORA unlike MS Driver which allows full qualified connect?
We are looking at moving from using the MS ODBC/OLEDB providers for Oracle (contained in MDAC 2.7) to Oracle's own 8i/9i ODBC driver & OLEDB provider (because we need UNICODE support, which is lacking in the MS drivers).
For our 3-tier application, we build fully qualified ODBC/OLEDB dynamic connection strings at run-time (for DB2, ORACLE and SQL_SERVER) and pass these connections string around between tiers of our app. Provided the client PC has the basic connectivity for the necessary RDBMS platform, the connection string works.
The MS Drivers for ORACLE enable you to specify a fully qualified string in the SERVER argument like so:
SERVER=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(COMMUNITY=tcp.world)(PROTOCOL=TCP)(Host=<HostName>)(Port=<PortNumber>))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=<SID>)))
So does the ORACLE OLEDB provider.
However, I can't get the ORACLE ODBC driver (9.0.0) driver to accept this using the DBQ argument (the equivalent of SERVER=). I can only get it to work if I make an entry in TNSNAMES.ORA and then say DBQ=<TNSNAMES.ORA Alias>, which is useless to us because of our "dynamic" requirements; we can't go around to every client in advance and update the TNSNAMES.ORA file because we do not which clients will want to access which database, or when.
Has anybody managed to get fully qualified TNS strings to work with the 8i/9i Oracle driver?
AlastairMy understanding from looking into this a while ago was that this used to work, but stopped working in some version of the driver. If you search this forum, I'm reasonably sure there will be a thread on this that goes into more detail than I currently remember.
I don't recall whether the most recent version of the Oracle ODBC driver fixes this bug. I would strongly suggest downloading an updated driver from OTN to test for yourself. If this is still a bug in the most recent version of the driver, there ought to be a TAR opened in Metalink on it. Someone may have posted a workaround or an estimate of when this bug will be fixed.
