Misconfigured rcap on Solaris 10 with zones - SMF fails to start rcap

Hi,
I have just installed Solaris 10 on a brand new T5220 server (Niagara processor, 16GB of RAM). After creating first non-global zone with capped memory and cpu, SMF fails to start rcap service:
+root@bs10 [~]$ svcs -xv+
svc:/system/rcap:default (resource capping daemon)
State: maintenance since Mon Nov 03 10:28:53 2008
Reason: Start method exited with $SMF_EXIT_ERR_CONFIG.
See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-KS
See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M rcapd
See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M rcapstat
See: man -M /usr/share/man -s 1M rcapadm
See: /var/svc/log/system-rcap:default.log
Impact: This service is not running.
Content of service's log:
+root@bs10 [~]$ tail /var/svc/log/system-rcap:default.log+
+[ Nov  3 09:36:21 Method "start" exited with status 96 ]+

svc.startd could not set context for method: chdir: No such file or directory
+[ Nov  3 10:28:53 Method "start" exited with status 96 ]+
Clearing service status helps, but this error is reported after every system restart. FSS is set as the default system's scheduling class.

The reason of this behave: the root's home directory was located on the filesystem different than root filesystem. After moving it everything works fine.

  • Cloning Solaris 10 with zones

What is the best method to use when cloning a Solaris machine with zones, to ensure all software is included and can be easily installed
    on new hardware?
    Thank you!

If you use UFS, then ufsdump/ufsrestore
If you use ZFS, then zfs send/zfs receive
But, if you are using hardware or software RAID, you can also try to move one disk to an another machine.
You can see with these simple examples, that you have several methods and it depends how you configured your machine, Solaris and the zones. And finally, it depends too what is the source machine and what is the target machine, and how they are configured.

Hi Peter - thanks for your reply.
I had already tried including the full path to srcore in AccessKeyMouseEvents (apologies for not mentioning this before) and still no luck.
I've just now re-verified that I made the correct changes as outlined in the JDS3 accessibility guide. My AccessKeyMouseEvents line is:
    <Control>s 1 1000 1000 /usr/sfw/bin/srcore login disable-magnifier enable-speech enable-braille
(it is all on one line)
    Any other suggestions?
Is there a way I can determine (via a non graphical method) whether the proper modules are being loaded by gdm?

  • Solaris 10 Guest OS in VirtualBox: X-server fails to start

I couldn't find a VirtualBox users/admins forum, so this seemed to be the next best place to post.
I installed VBox (2.1.2) on Solaris 10 x86, and then created a Solaris 10 guest. After installing the guest additions package to the Solaris guest the X-server fails to start.
I see the following message on the VBox console for the guest:
The X-server can not be started on display :0...
See file /var/dt/Xerror for details. The /var/dt/Xerrors file shows these messages.
Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly 1
Server for display :0 can't be startedI found that removing (or renaming) the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file clears this problem up.
Since this guest OS is going to be my SunRay server I don't know if removing the xorg.conf file is going to cause some other problems later on.
Has anybody else seen this problem?
    And/or
Does anybody know the xorg.conf file well enough to know how to fix this without completely removing the file?

By default Solaris does not create an xorg.conf file. It probes for the values and uses what it finds. You can find several books on X Windows and one of those should be able to step you through the xorg.conf file.
You can probably find an online version at some Linux Vendors documentation web site.

  • Upgrading Solaris with Zones

I have just found the following statement in the Solaris 10 Install Guide, section "Upgrade Limitations":
"If you have configured Solaris Zones on your system, you are not able to upgrade until you have unconfigured and uninstalled your non-global zones"
I have a serious problem with this limitation. It seems to be impossible to upgrade a Solaris 10 system with zones configured. I would have to shut down and uninstall my zones and applications to upgrade the OS.
There's not even a way to move the affected zones to another system to keep the application running if the host with the global zone needs maintenance due to OS upgrade, HW maintenance or if simply has too many zones configured on it and all resources are exhausted.
With these limitations I don't see much reasonable use for zones. In particular, once a zone and an application is set up on a physical box with a particular OS release I am stuck with it for all times.
How are you going to solve these problems. And when? What are zones good for in the current implementation? I am still waiting for convincing arguments to use zones ...

I guess I'll state for the record, lest anyone should be confused by my last post, that LiveUpgrade doesn't allow upgrade anymore. I guess I got away with it before LU was upgraded to restrict such activity.
ERROR: Unable to upgrade boot environment <Solaris10-B58>.
INFORMATION: Boot environment <Solaris10-B58> has one or more non-global
zones installed. This version of Live Upgrade cannot upgrade a boot
Guess I'd better figure out how to backup my zones so I clean remove them. A simple tar will probly do the trick for now.

  • Live Upgrade with Zones - still not working ?

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to do LiveUpdate from Solaris update 3 to update 4 with non-global zone installed. It's driving me crazy now.
I did everything as described in documentation, installed SUNWlucfg and supposedly updated SUNWluu and SUNWlur (supposedly because they are exactly the same as were in update 3) both from packages and with script from update 4 DVD, installed all patches mentioned in 72099, but lucreate process still complains about missing patches and I've checked if they're installed five times. They are. It doesn't even allow to create second BE. Once I detached Zone - everything went smooth, but I had an impression that Live Upgrade with Zones will work in Update 4.
It did create second BE before SUNWlucfg was installed, but failed on update stage with exactly the same message - install patches according to 72099. After installation of SUNWlucfg Live Upgrade process fails instantly, that's a real progress, must admit.
Is it still "mission impossible" to Live Upgrade with non-global zones installed ? Or am I missed something ?
Any ideas or success stories are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I upgraded from u3 to u5.
The upgrade went fine, the zones boot up but there are problems.

  • Solaris 8 branded zone and privileges

    Hello,
I've just installed a Solaris 8 Branded zone to migrate an old server. The migration worked like a charm, and everything seems ok excepted one thing. The zone must run a Lotus Domino server, so the process needs to bind ports 80, 443 and 389, but it can't.
I've found things about the limitpriv directive for the zone configuration, and the net_privaddr privilege to allow a process to bind ports under 1024.
So now, if I run the process in the non global zone as root, it can bind, but if it is launched as the user notes, it can't.
If I use the ppriv command to see what are the privileges of the process, I see :
    1945:   /opt/lotus/notes/latest/sunspa/server
    flags = <none>
            E: file_link_any,proc_exec,proc_fork,proc_info,proc_session
            I: file_link_any,proc_exec,proc_fork,proc_info,proc_session
            P: file_link_any,proc_exec,proc_fork,proc_info,proc_session
            L: contract_event,contract_observer,file_chown,file_chown_self,file_dac_execute,file_dac_read,file_dac_search,
            file_dac_write,file_link_any,file_owner,file_setid,ipc_dac_read,ipc_dac_write,ipc_owner,net_bindmlp,net_icmpaccess,
            net_mac_aware,net_privaddr,net_rawaccess,proc_audit,proc_chroot,proc_exec,proc_fork,proc_info,proc_lock_memory,
proc_owner,proc_session,proc_setid,proc_taskid,sys_acct,sys_admin,sys_audit,sys_mount,sys_nfs,sys_resourceSo, the net_privaddr appears in the limit, but it is not enabled. How can I make it enabled for that process?
    Thanks

Thanks for the link, good explanations about privileges but they seem unusable in Solaris 8 branded zone. It suggests to create a role with the privileges my process needs, using the "rolemod -K" command, but this option does not exist for the rolemod command in my Solaris 8 zone, it just supports "classic" RBAC.
Maybe the solution would be to create the good profile for the user running the process, but I'm a little bit lost with RBAC and I can't find an existing profile corresponding to what I want.
Actually, the limitpriv for my zone is "default,net_rawaccess,net_privaddr,file_dac_read" and that's all. I added net_privaddr and file_dac_read because I saw that a "ppriv -D" on the Lotus server complained about the lack of these privileges, but in fact they are already included in default privileges.

  • Multithreading issue on Solaris 8 branded zone

    Hi,
We are facing a multithreading problem in Solaris 8 container (branded zone) on Solaris 10.
The core file shows 2 LWPs for a single thread.
    First LWP
    (dbx) lwp
    current LWP ($lwp) is l@1403
    (dbx) print this->m_ThreadId->m_IdImpl.m_PosixId
    this->m_ThreadId.m_IdImpl.m_PosixId = 1404U
    Second LWP
    (dbx) lwp
    current LWP ($lwp) is l@1404
    (dbx) print this->m_ThreadId->m_IdImpl.m_PosixId
    this->m_ThreadId.m_IdImpl.m_PosixId = 1404U
Another point to note is that dbx returns 'MT support is disabled' for this program even though it has been built using the -mt option. The dbx version is Sun Dbx Debugger 7.5 2005/10/13.
As far as I have read, the Solaris 8 branded zone uses the alternate T2 thread library. Note also that this program is linked with the alternate thread library @ /usr/lib/lwp.
This alternate thread library is supposed to use the 1:1 thread model.
Can someone explain why are we then seeing 2 LWPs for a single thread ?
    Thanks,
    Best regards,
    Raj Iyer

I'm using a VPS account from a vendor running Solaris 10 on one of Suns AMD machines.

This machine has Java 5 installed on it, in /usr/java.
It also has Java 1.4.2 in /usr/j2se.
I start the install, it asks for an installation directory (I choose the default of /opt/SUNWappserver), it creates the directory and then prompts for the JDK.
    This is my transcript:

So, if I understand this correctly, you are running this installation in local zone and trying to use J2SE from the global zone, right?
This hang might have something to do with zones. Based on limited truss snippet it is hard to tell where exactly it hangs, though. One possibility is that in fact J2SE verification went through fine but the next screen is the one which asks for default server configuration, including port numbers. Before that screen is shown, installer will try to find out whether the default port numbers are free or not, so it is possible it actually hangs there.
To see if the port verification is an issue, please try running:
    ./sjsas_pe-8_2-solaris-i586.bin -console -noportcheck
With this option, any port verification done by installer will be skipped, so if the hang was there installation should now go through. Note that this will create your default domain using default set of port numbers, so there is a chance you'll need to change port values prior to starting the server if any of those ports are in fact in use.
Also, if installer hangs in port verification, this might point to network configuration issues, so if you also run into problems during the server startup you might need to further deal with networking. In any case, try installing as above and see if you can get further.

  • Deferred patching broken for machines with zones

For a while I've noticed that Ive had trouble patching a couple of machines.
I've managed to determine the significant characteristic identifying them.
All the machines with a non global zone have the problem.
To confirm, I added a test zone to a machine that was fine. And it immediately it developed the problem.
Anyway, the symptom is that no deferred patches will install.
So patches delayed by a "smpatch update" till the reboot fail to install.

Anyone got any workarounds for this problem.
    Is it a known issue.
Or should I log a support request.

Any progress on this? Its been 2 months. And sun has managed to put out an entire new update to Solaris.
And a 119254-59 has been released. But neither includes a fix for this issue as far as I can tell...
Its now basically impossible to patch machines with zones up to the latest kernel 137137-09 since that has a dependency on 119254-58.
And machines with zones can't be patched if a version higher than 119254-53 is installed....

  • Solaris 10-Branded Zone

    Hi,
I am trying to establish whether the following configuration is officially supported (and documented):
"Non-Global zone running a release of Solaris 10 which is older than the release of Solaris 10 running in the Global Zone".
I'm familiar with the idea of Branded Zones to support Solaris 8, 9 & some Linux kernels, and have seen some forum posts where people have created Solaris 10-branded zones, but haven't really seen anything that puts the official seal of approval on that configuration. Also I'm familiar with LDOMs and appreciate that I could get to where I want to be that way too.
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks,
    Paul.

This will be supported in Solaris 10 Upate 9 to a degree, using p2v. Below is a reply I had to a request I'd put in. You might also want to read this
    http://blogs.sun.com/jerrysblog/entry/zones_p2v
    Hi Sean,
I got information that p2v project is being backported for S10u9
This means, that you will be able to install a native zone from a flar.
I don't have detailed information at the moment, how this will work in terms of
patching in combination with Global Zone and other sibling NGZ's.
+According to Jerry Jelinek, Solaris10-branded zones will not being backported to Solaris 10,+
Got this info yesterday evening from Jerry.
I'll provide some more info about the p2v project for native zones in coming Solaris 10_U9,
    once I got more details.
So, I'd suggest to check, whether the mentioned p2v project with flar on native zones might fit your requirements.
    Thanks,
    Alfred

  • Creating a Solaris 8 branded zone

I am in the process of configuring a Solaris 8 branded zone using the SUNWsolaris8 package and the instructions in the Solaris8 Container Guide. Solaris 10 08/07 is installed in the global zone. I have the following kernel patches installed as required: 127111-08 and 128548-08. I get the following error after configuring the zone when I try to verify the zone:
    -bash-3.00# zonecfg -z gfxc-qazone
    gfxc-qazone: No such zone configured
Use 'create' to begin configuring a new zone.
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> create -t SUNWsolaris8
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> set autoboot=true
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> set zonepath=/export/zones/gfxc-qazone
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> add attr
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone:attr> set name=machine
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone:attr> set type=string
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone:attr> set value=sun4u
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone:attr> end
    zonecfg:gfxc-qazone> verify
    gfxc-qazone: unknown brand.
    gfxc-qazone: Invalid document
I cannot find any other information anywhere on this error. I am hoping those that have successfully installed a Solaris 8 branded zone can help me out. Thanks.

I have installed the SUNWs8brand packages before I started the configuration and I also installed the patch. I am not sure what you mean if the package installed in the correct order. I cannot find what I am missing. The original installation for the global zone was using the SUNCreq with other packages added during the installation. I realized after the O/S installation that I needed the zone packages as well as the live upgrade packages. After installing those packages I installed the SUNWs8brand packages. Let me know if there is something else that I am missing. I am thinking of re-installing the O/S with the End User software group.
