Missing features in Server Admin

I have been administrating OS X servers for a couple of years, in my opinion there are a couple of things missing from the Server Admin Application:
*Fetchmail setup*
It's very easy setting it up using the command line (once you know how to do it). So why not make a GUI option for it? It's an excellent feature when a server is installed on a location where the power and/or internet connection is not reliable enough. In fact one of the (very) few things I like on a Windows server is the POP3 Connection Manager, it's very easy to set up.
*Site 2 Site VPN*
An excellent feature, once again, simple to set up once you know how to do it using the command line. It's an excellent option for connection networks. But it feels like a hidden feature.
*Windows version*
The Server Admin and Workgroup manager apps are great, but I think that a Windows version would make a Mac OS X Server more attractive for Windows user. Both apps are relatively simple, so why not?
That's all...

  • Missing tabs from WebLogic Server Admin console

    I am extremely new to WebLogic. It came with a vendor package we bought, and we do not have support. I have been using ASK to search for answers to my questions/problems. It has become obvious that either I don't know what I am doing :-) or that our installation is less robust than other peoples.
    On our Weblogic Server Admin console, there is no such thing as a "Change Center". If I go to Services -> JDBC -> Connection Pools, there is no tab for Testing. The only tabs I have are Configuration and Monitoring. Monitoring only has text on it - no button to push. Do I always have to "configure a new JDBC connection pool" in order to somehow find a TEST tab?
    Have we done something wrong during installation? Thank you, anyone, for help and advice.
    Bonnie

    Can you please share the error logs/standard output snippet here. It seems to be an issue with the classpath that the system classloader is reading.
    Cheers!!

  • Server admin web services missing

    I just installed Server Admin Tools on my Lion Mac Mini Server and when I go to Settings->Services the checkbox for "web" doesn't appear.   I am running MAMP on the box.  Can someone tell me how to get the web services to appear?

    web services is no longer part of server admin. You have to use the Lion server app to manage websites. This caught me out as well.

  • Server Admin's proxy configuration... whacked? (Doesn't seem to work)

    I just upgraded to Apache2 so that I could, sensibly, use the Server Admin app to manage all my web sites. Previously, my various httpd conf files were too complicated and I had resorted to hand coding them.
    The good news is Server Admin and Apache2 are much closer to functional.
    One bit of bad news: I can't get the reverse proxies to work consistently. Once set up, I get the most peculiar mix of success and failure -- almost at random. For example, some URIs load; others don't; sometimes a page loads, but it's style sheet doesn't.
    What I want is simply this:
    */confluence (proxy to) localhost:8081/confluence
    Using hand-edited config files, I'd usually do something along these lines (and this works great, by the way, if I stick it into 0000any_80www.mydomain.com.conf:
    ProxyRequests Off
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
    ProxyPass /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
    So, off to Server Admin to make this work. I tried checking "Enable Reverse Proxy" and specifying a Proxy Path of "/confluence" and a Worker URL of http://localhost:8081/confluence. This ended up created the following entry in my 0000_...conf file:
    <IfModule modproxybalancer.c>
    ProxyPass /confluence balancer://balancer-group/
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence balancer://balancer-group/
    <Proxy "balancer://balancer-group">
    BalancerMember http://localhost:8081/confluence
    </Proxy>
    </IfModule>
    I wasn't able to figure out what a Sticky Session Identifier, Route or Load Factor would be used for... so I left those blank. Perhaps that's why it's not working... sure would be nice if there was some help in Server Admin...
    Hm. Anyhow, Ok, looks alright. I'm not totally sure about the balancer bits (like why they are there), but I don't see why it wouldn't work. But... IT DOES NOT. I get totally inconsistent results. Some pages load, some don't. Sometimes I get some page assets, while others don't come through. Bah. However, if I get rid of the above, and simply put this in:
    ProxyRequests Off
    ProxyPassReverse /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
    ProxyPass /confluence http://localhost:8081/confluence
    It works great. Only problem is, anytime I edit a server configuration, Server Admin goes and deletes those lines! I think I've found a way around it though. I put the above lines into a "0000.proxy" file (in /etc/apache2/sites/0000.proxy) and now I've added this line:
    Include "/etc/apache2/sites/0000.proxy"
    At the bottom of my 0000_...conf file. So far, Server Admin hasn't deleted that line... and it seems to be working.
    BUT, I'd just LOVE it if someone could tell me how to make this work without hacking around in the command line! Very annoying -- and of course, my proxies are showing up in Server Admin, and I really wish that would work.

    Hi there
    For the benefit of anyone looking at this thread, what is meant here is that if you choose to open the help for RoboHelp, you have an abiliity to add a comment. That comment may be kept private or shared with others. If you elect to share it with others, it is generally added as a comment into the pages that provide the help. If approved, Adobe may amend the help topic to reflect the new information.
    @Jared - Was that information missing in your file? I thought when you elected to use this file that it was automatically populated with all available settings. And unfortunately (IMNSHO) the settings don't immediately reflect the settings in the dialog. (I think they should, as a starting point. At least, that's the behavior *I* expected the first time I played with the feature. I was admittedly taken aback when it didn't work that way.)
    Assuming the setting was missing, how did you manage to sort what setting should be added?
    Cheers... Rick

  • Remote Server Admin not working from outside of network for 1 server

    Our company recently changed ISPs and I had to change our two 10.4 server's IP addresses. We have a mail server (intel xserve) and a file/web server (quicksilver g4). Both servers have two network cards in them. The problem is two-fold:
    1- I can successfully manage the Xserve machine locally on our network and from my home. However, I can only manage the Quicksilver g4 server locally. Any kind of external access is not even acknowledged.
    2- I'm not sure if I missed any steps when changing IP addresses for these server-based computers. Also, I'm not sure if I correctly set our dns names to the correct IP address.
    For some background, this is the exact IP update process I used for each server:
    Quicksilver G4 (file/web server) - Installed network card #2 and configured it with the new Public IP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. In Server Admin I set our website to use the new public IP address. (network card #2 has no firewall device in between it and the internet.)
    Then, I configured the default network card #1 to a static, yet private IP address that's behind our DLink firewall device with the rest of our network.
    Intel Xserve (e-mail server) - Network card #1 was the only one setup before our network change. It had a static, public IP address. When we changed ISPs, I configured network card #2 to the new static, public IP address supplied to us by the new ISP in the "System Preferences/Network" panel. This new IP address is where all email traffic currently gets pointed to. (All mail is successfully sent and delivered.) Until our former ISP gets shutdown, I still have network card #1 configured to the older static public IP address. After the old ISP is shut off, I plan on changing network card #1 to a static, private address.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    What should I check in AD?  I am by no means an expert with AD.
    Yes, I am using the same client OS.
    I am talking about RDP over the internet, like from home to the office.  We have a static IP assigned to the router from ISP.  A static internal IP assigned to the server on the LAN.  And the router port forwards 3389 to the assigned IP.
    It was working fine before we reinstalled Server 2012.  These are the steps I took when reinstalling:
    1. format drive and install OS
    2. rename the server
    3. install SQL server
    4. Install TFS and SharePoint
    5. Add Active Directory role and promote to Domain Controller
    6. Add domain users
    7. Enable remote access on the server and add users to remote access list

  • Server Admin not drawing graphs

    I have a fresh install of Leopard that will not display the graphs in Server Admin on the server. I can see the graphs if viewing from my laptop or other machine, but not from the server itself. It gets a few errors like ...
    ... [0x0-0x1b01b].com.apple.ServerAdmin[1734]: * ERROR: -[GRAxes computeLayout]:1124 - plotRect height = 0.000000 <= 0.0 *
    ... [0x0-0x1b01b].com.apple.ServerAdmin[1734]: * ERROR: -[GRChartView computeLayout]:1194 - Layout for overlay axes (0x6826d30) failed. *
    The hardware is a Xserve, 2 x 2.0GHz PPC G5 with 2.0 GB RAM.
    Any help is appreciated as this is an annoying feature.

    Hi
    I see the same "error" messages in every leopard server install I've done - and I've done a fair few - regardless of what hardware was used. Graphs draw fine for me.

  • Server Admin keeps dispaying error "The service has encountered an error."

    All the services in the Server Admin function are continuously displaying the following error message:
    The service has encountered an error.
    Try to refresh the view (servername.local/servicename). (kNetworkError)
    I press OK and the message disappears, but I have to go through every service to remove this message, and then it just reappears a little later. But it doesn't seem to affect the operation of the server, but I'm concerned that this is disguising a future problem and would like to get rid of this occurring. I have searched the forums and found nobody to help me. Please can anyone help me?
    Message was edited by: Viking Marauder

    Thanks guys, it seems this is a feature of the operating system and Apple have not bothered to find a solution, maybe because you're not supposed to leave the server admin open for long periods of time. A little disappointing, however it does not seems to be causing any other problems with the server as it is running perfectly well.
    Thanks to everyone for your input, I'll close this issue now, and as Jamie Curmi stated this may be resolved in the next release of the OS.

  • Missing features in UCM for decision making based on cost vs needs

    Hi Experts,
    I understand that UCM is a component in ECM. However what I'd like to know and can't seem to find anywhere is a summary or explanation on missing core features of UCM that can be found in IPM, URM and IRM. For example, a feature that is highlighted in URM is digital asset management however digital asset can also be stored in UCM.
    I need to know briefly (high level, mid level if it is necessary) on the missing features in UCM that are in IRM, IPM and URM so I can decide on going between ECM or UCM, taking cost into factor. FYI I will be having WebCenter too and future add on will be BPM suite.
    Thank you,
    bav

    bav,
    first, let me correct few things in your statements:
    I understand that UCM is a component in ECMECM (Suite) is a suite of products, one of which is UCM.
    Since 11g, IPM and URM have been re-written so that they have UCM as its foundation (document storage). URM was UCM-like even in 10g, IPM was quite different.
    IRM is a completely different application, which can serve as a security add-on regardless the document storage.
    For example, a feature that is highlighted in URM is digital asset management however digital asset can also be stored in UCMWhere have you found that? DAM is certainly a UCM feature (can't imagine correlation to Records Management, if there is some, it is with Web Content Management).
    I guess you have seen that both URM and UCM both contain Record Management - in a nutshell, UCM's RM can be used for simpler scenarios (sometimes referred to as 'retention management'), whilst URM is necessary for formal records management scenarios - compliance to legislative norms, such as DoD 5015.2 or MoReq2. URM also contains Physical Content Management.
    missing features in UCM that are in IRM, IPM and URMFor URM, I believe, to get a high level info is enough what I've written above.
    For IPM, see this post: Re: Difference between UCM and IPM
    For IRM: as I have written, it is a completely different cup of tea - in a nutshell, IRM allows so-called 'sealing' of documents. E.g. rather than having a Microsoft Word file (.doc), you will have encrypted file (.sdoc - 'sealed' .doc), which a user can open only if he or she is authorized to do so. Whilst security in UCM/URM/IPM restricts users from having access to documents (or search for them), IRM restricts reading the document once you have it. It can also restrict other operations like print, copy from the document (even to screenshot), prevent untracked changes, etc.
    I hope it will give you some initial insight.

  • "Pages" and "Sheets" columns in Server Admin Print Service Jobs

    I've been using Print Service for a while now and it's been working reasonably well.
    When I'm monitoring queues in Server Admin, I've noticed there are columns for "Pages" and "Sheets." These columns are always blank for every print job in every print queue.
    I am not using Print Quotas, but I am managing Preferences for Printing in Workgroup Manager.
    I have two questions:
    1) Any idea why these columns are blank? Does the client-side and/or server-side printer driver have to support this feature? I'm using HP's latest Laserjet drivers for each queue on both the clients and the server. Perhaps these columns are only applicable when using Print Quotas?
    2) If these columns did show something, what would be the difference between "Pages" and "Sheets?" Apple's own documentation offers no description. All their Print Service manual says is:
    "Jobs are listed in priority order, and include the name of the user who submitted each job, the name of the job, its size, the number of sheets to be printed, the current status of the job, and the number of pages in the job (you might need to scroll to see the page column)."
    Pretty vague...
    -- Steve

    Is there anyone using printing services on a Mac server at all that could comment on whether or not you see the print jobs listed in the queue when printing?

  • Server versus Server Admin

    The installation of Lion Server on top of Snow Leopard went smoothly but configuring it is a nightmare. It tried some features I did not use before and thenI started to lose users, groups connections and my patience. I have OS server up and running, configuring it myself. Although there are some fundamental problems, it works for the family at home.
    One basic problem I have is when to use Server and when Server Admin. They do not seem to use the same data so that means for me they do not work together. I am talking about a basic thing like hostname. They cannot be the same as Admin Server Admin creates it's own name. When linking the network account server in the user settings it gives within 5 minutes without changing anything the name from the server and then the name from the server admin program. What is wrong.
    Thanks for your response

    Graceful shutdown using weblogic.Admin SHUTDOWN has it advantages. It allows
    WLS to invoke the shutdown class as also undeploy applications gracefully. If
    you have SNMP Agent running then it can send a shutdown trap to the trap
    receiver.
    A Unix kill goes directly to the java process and WLS cannot do anything on
    that.
    So, the option depends upon whether you have to do any cleanup while shutting
    down or immediately shut down without any clean up.
    cheers,
    Mihir

  • Server Admin & SNow Leopard

    I recently updated my Macbook Pro to Snow Leopard. We have a Mac OS X server (10.4.8) and when i try to connect with Server Admin i get this message " Received an unexpected authentication failure. This may be caused by trying to connect to a server prior to version 10.5.8. If this is the ase, please install the latest ipdate of Mac OS X Server software and try to connect again."
    We are unable to buy the software and update. And I need to manage the Server with Server Admin. Help!!

    While the cost of upgrading hardware and software configurations is widely recognized, there are also costs involved with staying on older gear and older software.
    If a site is planning to lock onto older software releases, then it is generally considered the site's responsibility to purchase enough hardware (servers, spares, etc) to maintain those requirements, or to make arraignments with a supplier or the vendor to provide services and support for duration of the installation; to reserve enough spare parts.
    I regularly deal with enterprise-class computing gear that's a dozen or more years old, acquired from a well-known enterprise vendor, and newer hardware and component upgrades there are regularly not supported on older platforms, or newer platforms require newer software releases, or requires site-local customization work, or some combination of these. (I had problems a week or so ago simply because the mountings within the older 19" rack-mount cabinets differ, and the necessary rail-mounting kits simply aren't available.)
    The deployments here can go for ten or twenty years and with few or no modifications, and that requirement requires acquiring and monitoring available spare parts and spare servers, and watching and resolving for failure patterns that might burn through the available spares.
    Extending hardware support back a generation or three for newer gear also increases the testing and support matrix, and the associated costs. The vendor has more to test, is constrained around what can be upgraded, and there are the usual costs with maintaining the older gear. Those costs can and do get passed through to the customer, too, whether as vendor overhead costs or as reduced feature-sets, or both.

  • Removed Missing Dependencies Missing Features, reanalyzed, now 9x more Missing Dependencies....

    I'm using the excellent Phil Childs get-scripts Powershell scripts to clear out some Missing Dependencies. There were Missing Feature, MissingSetupFile, and MissingAssembly referencences, all related to the same wsp that is no longer in use and
    was retracted.  http://get-spscripts.com/2011/06/removing-features-from-content-database.html
    I removed some Missing Features, reanalyzed, and the 15 item Missing Dependencies list, instead of shrinking, is now at 134 items.
    I’m going to try and figure out cause before I start chugging through these. Any recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi Scott,
    Are these new 134 error messages different from orginal 15 error messages?
    We need to check each error message description and do as error message content suggests to solve the issue (e.g. may find the webparts referenced this custom feature and remove unwanted web part from the page).
    More articles about the missing dependencies you can take a look.

    Your NFS mounts (and service) appear to be fine.
    Looking at your screenshot, you have a much larger problem than NetBoot & DHCP. The whole servermanager daemon looks like it's failing to run.
    You are probably going to have to get someone to diagnose it live, or take it to an Apple Store.

  • Cannot connect to server in Server Admin

    Okay... Round 2
    When I left last night, everything on Server Admin worked just fine. Life was peachy. When I got back this morning, Server Admin had stalled. Nothing had updated again. And when I closed and restarted it, it just couldn't connect the server. The screenshot shows the error I got when trying to reconnect.
    I've tried re-adding the server both by using servername.local (what it's been for quite some time) and the IP address. Both came up with the same error.
    Everything on the website still works fine. I can still create new entries on the wiki, and the website is still online. But none of the changes I'm making through other programs (i.e. Workgroup Manager) are appearing. And, yes, I've tried restarting it.
    http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t175/blathersby/Picture1-2.png
    Any ideas? I hate to be a bother (again), but I'm going crazy-go-nuts here. Thanks!

    This is a problem that I had. Open Directory was up and running, but said Kerberos had not started, nor had Kerberos populated Open Directory. However, if memory serves, I was getting an obscure error with Kerberos. The majority of all of my problems were solved by reinstalling the OS, and installing the 10.5.1 patch the absolute moment I hit the desktop. It was fairly smooth sailing after that.
    You could take a look at /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos to ensure that it is properly configured. Mine lookslike:
    [libdefaults]
    default_realm = HONEYCOMB.PRIVATE
    [realms]
    HONEYCOMB.PRIVATE = {
    admin_server = honeycomb.private
    admin_server = 192.168.0.1
    kdc = honeycomb.private
    kdc = 192.168.0.1
    [domain_realm]
    private = HONEYCOMB.PRIVATE
    .private = HONEYCOMB.PRIVATE
    [logging]
    admin_server = FILE:/var/log/krb5kdc/kadmin.log
    kdc = FILE:/var/log/krb5kdc/kdc.log
    If you are comfortable enough in the shell, I'd remain there. /sbin/kerberosautoconfig is supposed to automatically create /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos based on the Open Directory information. If it isn't creating that file correctly, it means the Open Directory information is incorrect or missing. /usr/sbin/kdcsetup is supposed to properly setup Open Directory with the information to make a machine a KDC - however I don't think that'll give you all the fields you need in Open Directory.
    So, in conclusion, check your /Library/Preferences/edu.mit.Kerberos and see what is in there. If everything looks good - it may be a simple configuration issue - check your log files. If your edu.mit.Kerberos is not there or contains the default EDU.MIT.ATHENA realm information - then I don't know where you go from there - I reinstalled.
    FYI You can also go into Keychain Access (/Applications/Utilities), click on Main Menu->Kerberos Ticket Viewer. Once the Kerberos Ticket Viewer comes up, you can click on Edit->Edit Realms.

  • Upgrade to Lion from 10.6 shows no ical, etc. in server admin... but runs them...

    Upgraded on of my (4) servers today from the latest 10.6 to 10.7. I downloaded the whole package, everyhting went fine, until I accessed the server with server admin (10.7).
    From all of my services only DNS, Firewall, Mail and OpenDirectory were up and running (and showing up).
    But I had iCal, AFP, Adressbock, VPN and Web running.
    I did not have Mail running (so I do not know why the upgrade to lion switched mailservices on.)
    So now the funny part. I tried to add the missing services via "add service...", but they are not there and nowhere.
    So, assuming no iCal on the server running I thought my clients will not have iCal access, but to my great surprise. iCal worked just fine...?!
    So I startet the app "Server" on the lion server itself.
    To my surprise, there were all the missing services runnig and switched on. I switched them off and on again (to get them maybe visible in Server Admin) but nothing changed.
    Now I am running with all the services on but they are not visible in Server Admin...
    Only small problem I noticed, is that from my 3 afp sharepoints only one was visible, I switched again off and on file sharing via "server.app" and - voala all sharepoints are back again...
    Hmm, strange... I will wait with upgrading my other servers.
    regards
    Robert

    what you have described is the correct behaviour.  Server Admin has changed and some of the services are now in Server.
