Missing Fonts in Illustrator CS5

In the font pull down menu I have fonts displayed with "< >" symbols on the sides. I assume this means that illustrator thinks the font is missing or it has replaced the font or both? The font is loaded in Suitcase Fusion 3 (the only font management software on my MAC Pro) and it is activated. So why does these < > symbols still appear? How can I get rid of them? What is the font issue?

unclefester67 wrote:
so the "< >" symbols around the font name is actually just a way of telling that they are "Symbol" fonts. They are in fact not missing or have been replaced?
The bottommost font is not a Symbol font. I think it just indicates that the name of the font is not in that font itself (all other font names are), because the font does not contain Latin characters.
Missing fonts show up in square brackets [Like This] in InDesign, at the very top of the font list, and I think it's the same for Illy.

  • Missing Fonts in Illustrator CS4

    I have been having an issue with the "missing font"
    My problem is that Illustrator recognizes the fonts sometimes and not other times.  I have had no problems for the past week or so and I just restarted my computer and now a number of fonts that worked fine suddenly are replaced with the "missing font" default.
    The fonts I'm currently concerned with are all in the default LaTeX family (i.e. cmr10, cmmi10, cmbx10, etc...) I have all of them installed on my computer and they work fine in every other application.
    Does anyone have any idea what is going on or how I can solve this problem?  Why does illustrator "lose" them and how do I get them back? !!
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the link.  I'm actually using Windows 7 and in the mean time my illustrator "found" the fonts again (still can't figure out why).  I don't know how well the solutions for the Mac OS will work but I'll take a look.  If anyone else comes up with an answer I'd love to hear it!
    Thanks!

  • Problem with embedding fonts in Illustrator CS5

    I have just installed Illustrator CS5, and have tested creating a PDF document based on one of my existing files, as well as a new file.
    When I open these PDF documents in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, I am told that Acrobat cannot access one of the embedded fonts (Korinna BT).
    I have had no issues with embedding this font in Illustrator CS4, and (strangely), when I open these files in other PDF viewers (Preview and PDFPenPro), they report no issues.
    Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    I have removed and reinstalled the font in question, and tested/verified that the font is OK - but still not joy.
    Regards
    Jeremy

    The error message I get is:
    "Cannot extract the embedded font 'MVZTIW+KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular'. Some characters may not display or print correctly."
    When I check the fonts in the PDF in "Document Properties" in Adobe Acrobat the following is shown:
    "KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular
         Type: TrueType
         Encoding: Ansi
         Actual Font: Adobe Serif MM
         Actual Font Type: Type 1"
    It seems that Illustrator is adding some strange "code" ('MVZTIW') to the beginning of the font, which means the actual font can't be found and extracted.

  • List missing fonts in Illustrator

    Hi all,
    I've been working on a script to try and build a list of font's that not loaded in Illustrator. I know that Illustrator will alert missing fonts when a document is opened but this routine will be part of a larger script that will have the user dialogs turned off. My process is to build a list of fonts that are available to the the application, then build a list of fonts that are used within the active document and cross reference them to see if there are document fonts that are not in the application fonts list.
    I have used a great function that I believe was posted originally by Moluapple and with some some brilliant advice from the always helpful CarlosCanto I thought that I had found the soultion but it appears to have some limitations. If I get a list of fonts available to the application and the document that I want to cross reference them against is open, the list that's returned contains fonts that are used in the document. Then when I get a list of fonts used in the document and cross reference them they will all be in the application list regardless of whether they're loaded or not.
    The only way that I can get accurate results are if I run the script without any documents open and build a list of application fonts, then open a document and build a list of document fonts and then cross reference. This is the only way I can find out what fonts aren't loaded.
    Does anybody know of another way to build a list of missing fonts without having to close documents first? I have searched through the XMP data and this doesn't seem to give me any clues and I've tried writing the code in applescript but it appears to work in the same way. Any help or comments would be welcome.
    Here's my code:
    #target illustrator
    var doclist = app.textFonts
    var appFontList = new Array ();
    for (i=0;i< app.textFonts.length; i++){
        var fontName = app.textFonts[i].name;
        appFontList[i] = fontName;
    var myfile = File.openDialog ('Choose a file');
    app.open (myfile);
    var docFontsList = getUsedFonts(activeDocument);
    // function accredited to Moluapple
    function getUsedFonts (doc ){
         var xmlString = new XML(doc.XMPString);
         fontsInfo = xmlString.descendants("stFnt:fontName");
         var ln = fontsInfo.length(), arr = [];
         for (var i = 0; i<ln; i++){arr.push(fontsInfo[i])};
         return arr;
    var missingFontsList = checkFonts();
    alert(missingFontsList);
    function checkFonts(){
        var fontArray = new Array ();
        for (i=0; i < docFontsList.length; i++){
            var thisDocFont = docFontsList[i];
            var activeFont = false;
            for (j = 0; j < appFontList.length; j++){
                var thisAppFont = appFontList[j];
                if (thisDocFont == thisAppFont){
                    activeFont = true;
            if (activeFont == false){
                fontArray.push (thisDocFont);
        return fontArray;
    Many Thanks,
    Nik

    Mark,
    you are a legend!!!!
    with yours and Carlos' help I think I have raged against the system that is Adobe and come out victorious!!!!!!!!
    I Finally have a script that doesn't tell me lies.
    Building a list of fonts that are available from InDesign, then building a list of fonts that the active Illustrator document is using and comparing the 2 lists I've managed to locate the fonts that aren't active. I'm sure the script could have some fine tuning but hopefully it might help others who just want to know if fonts are missing before creating a PDF that contains false font information.
    Thanks again all,

  • How do you change the default font in Illustrator CS5?

    I have upgraded my Illustrator to CS5 and my default font has changed to a strange font. In Photoshop and InDesign, I was told that all you have to do is change the font in the Character menu to the font that you wish to be set as "default" and it will be the font that you always start with.
    NOTE: Does this mean that if I use a different font in a different document, the font will stay that font unless I change it back? Isn't there a way to make a particular font the font that I would always what I start with? All this setup means, is that the "default font" will always be whatever the last font that  was being used was. There has to be a way to make a default font that I will always start with no matter what the last font that was being used was.
    Illustrator gives you no option on font type, unless a file is open. Then, if you change the font and close the file, next time you start a file, it will go back to what is was to begin with. There has to be a way to change the default font for all of these programs to where the font always stays the same unless you change it. Mine is just set to use a weird font that I would probably never use.
    I just never thought it would be that big of a deal to change default settings for the font.

    Okay, I basically made three different documents and I made sure that I had everything chosen in each. I then saved the three to that file and they now appear in the list:
    Settings for all 3:
    72psi, 150psi and 300psi
    Rulers Visable
    Times New Roman
    12pt
    14.4pt
    I then went in and started three new documents. I used the three different New Document Profile's that I made and they all had Rulers, their sizes were correct, but the font stayed Myriad Pro. Did I miss anything? And, Yes, I did change the font and the setting before I saved them in the New Document Profile.
    One other thing, I did create a file in the folder, but it was spelled incorrectly. I then went into the folder, erased it and made a second. Then, I went to open it in IllustratorCS5 and it was still listed. I went to the file and it wasn't there anymore, but it was still listed in the New Document Profile. Is there a way to get it off of the list or is all I have to do is restart Illustrator?

  • MBP Retina Display Font Crash Illustrator CS5

    just purchased a new mac book pro with retina display. Everytime I open my illustrator and try to scroll through the font list it crashes. This is a brand new install and a brand new computer - I haven't installed any fonts or brought any files over from my desktop mac - so font should not be an issue. Is Adobe working on a fix? will this issue happen still if I upgrade to 6? I'm not willing to spend the monthly fee unless it will be a guarantee fix.
    Thanks.

    Take it back and get a refund. What are you waiting for, your new Mac does not work correctly.

  • Missing font in Illustrator?

    Hi All,
    Strange thing here -
    CS3 - Is Illustrator not able to read a font on my Mac? This is how every field looks - a garbled font. I've never seen this before. Everything was working fine yesterday, and now this.
    Has anyone experienced this before?
    I appreciate the help. Thanks!

    Looks like you have a font confilct/corruption. I believe that font is supposed to be Lucida Console.
    Find all the .lst files on your computer and trash them
    close down any fonts you recently opened or do not use

  • Illustrator CS5.1 crashes when changing fonts

    Hoping someone can please help!! Every time I try to change fonts in Illustrator CS5.1, without fail it crashes. I'm on a macbook pro with retina display, OSX 10.9.4 and I have tried uninstalling then reinstalling the program and downloading the Adobe patches but my computer won't accept them. I've tried deleting the Illustrator preferences as well but nothing seems to work. PLEASE HELP?!!

    dezine,
    In serious cases requiring reinstallation, you should also use the Cleaner Tool, see 6) below.
    But it may be something with fonts/font caches, see  Items 1) and 11) in the link in 5) below; these may be the most probable causes.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Illustrator CS5 just won't stay open

    I have looked all over the forums and elsewhere to find a solution to this, but so far, I haven't been able to resolve it. I noticed many other people have had this problem, and it was resolved in many ways, but none of those ways worked for me. This is the trial downloaded from adobe.
    My info:
    Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit
    4 gb ram
    AMD athlon IIX2 Processor
    Both Photoshop and Illustrator load and run very fast on my laptop, so performance really isn't an issue.  I've never had this problem with photoshop.
    Illustrator cs5 worked fine since last night. After working on a file, I restarted and Illustrator loads and opens, but doesn't stay open. It closes about 3-5 seconds after it opens, so I can only assume it crashed without any error message.
    The starting logo never completely loads all of the font list. It usually gets to about 80% and then opens and closes automatically.
    So far, i've tried:
    uninstalling illustrator and reinstalling it -- did this 3 times
    using the cleaning tool to completely remove cs5 and reinstall it
    deleting the illustrator profile
    temporarily removing the fonts in C:/Windows/Fonts ... some fonts could not be moved due to the fact they were in use/system fonts
    updating illustrator CS5 to "fix" the bugs ... it doesn't seem to improve anything
    Looking in the event viewer for errors, I found this:
    Faulting application name: Illustrator.exe, version: 15.0.1.399, time stamp: 0x4c57c1d9
    Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

    Faulting module path: unknown
    Report Id: 7b1d928a-dfd0-11df-ab15-705ab6e1e86d
    not sure if any of that has to do with why it crashes.
    nothing worked. The strange thing is, if I open an .EPS or .AI file with illustrator, illustrator will stay open as long as my mouse is over a context menu. If i'm quick enough, I can open .EPS files in illustrator and then save them as .AI files, but as soon as I close the menu, illustrator quits.
    So, this is incredibly fustrating. I have to do a vector project in illustrator and obviously can't ... i've been quite desperate in trying to find other vector programs, but i'd rather not need to learn a new program when I can use one I already have.
    Does anyone know how to fix illustrator and keep it open?   how do I temporarily remove all the fonts from illustrator? I am assuming that because it never completely loads the font list at startup, its a font issue. But I haven't installed or modified any new fonts lately.
    Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

    I did as you suggested and removed my prefererences and workspaces. It still closes.
    Also, I do not use adobe acrobat, it isn't installed on my computer. I have no issues hovering over the menus in AI -- hovering over the menus and opening them is the only thing that keeps AI open. As soon as I take my mouse off the menu, AI closes.
    The only way to keep AI open is to interact with the menus. Any dialog box keeps it open. As soon as you close the menu or dialog, AI closes as well.

  • Opentype not working in Illustrator CS5

    I am unable to insert alternate characters for Opentype fonts in Illustrator CS5. I never had any problem with them in earlier CS versions, where I could simply double click a character in the Glyph window to insert an alternate style. Now, in CS5, sometimes that works, but usually it doesn't. Help please!

    I may have answered my own question by finding an updater that supposedly fixes problems with the glyph window.

  • Missing Fonts in Adobe Illustrator CS5 Version 15.1.0 Agenda Bold and Agenda Black

    Hi,
    We are using Adobe Illustrator CS5 Version 15.1.0  to re-create Points of Sales (PoS) that our 3rd party company sends us. But when we open the PoS from the 3rd Party we get a message saying we are missing 2 fonts. The names of these are Agenda Bold and Agenda Black. Are these Fonts from a newer version of Illustrator or are we able to purchase/download these?
    Any help would be much appreciated!!
    Thanks,

    These are not standard system or Adobe fonts. You will have to buy them from whatever type foundry that produces them.

  • Upgraded to CC from CS5.5 now all Illustrator templates have a 'missing font' (myraid-Italic). How can I fix this without replacing the font?

    Replacing the font is not an option. This would mean resaving thousands of company files.
    Also, none of the templates use Myraid Italic. They were created with Myraid Roman.
    This has never been an issue when upgrading to other versions of Illustrator.
    Every file I open will pop-up with the missing font notice; this is very annoying when checking numerous files (I have to click okay everytime for the file to load).

    I actually have a fairly simple solution to this for Windows 7.  Don't mess with your registry or delete other fonts. Go into c:/windows/fonts.  Check to see that you have the set of fonts "Segoe UI".  Inside this set are 6 Segoe fonts:
    Regular (segoeui)
    Regular Italic (segoeuii)
    Bold (segoeuib)
    Bold Italic (segoeuiz)
    Semi Bold (seguisb)
    Light (segoeuil)
    You may not have them arranged in a set, but just check that you have all of them.
    Make sure programs (i.e iTunes) are closed.
    If you don't have the fonts, find them on the internet, ask a friend to copy and paste them, send them to you etc.  They are easy and free to get.  Download them to your desktop.  Right click each one and "Install".
    If you already have them in your fonts folder (my problem) do this:  COPY (not cut) them from your c:/windows/fonts folder to your desktop.  Close windows explorer.  From your desktop, right click each one and "Install".  You will get a message that they are already installed and do you want to install a newer version or some such.  Say "Yes".  They will get re-installed.
    Open iTunes and you should have all your text back!
    *Based on a sample of one - hopefully it works for you.

  • Illustrator CS5 crashes when scrolling through font menu.

    Hello Adobe Community,
    I am in desperate need of help with my Illustrator CS5 program. It has suddenly started to crash when I scroll through the Font menu from the Type menu at the top of the program. I am using a late 2013 Macbook Pro 13" with retina display on OSX 10.9.2. I am using Illustrator CS5 v15.0.0. I have read through scores of forum threads and tried every solution that was suggested and still cannot resolve this problem. I am stumped and my back is up against the wall. My work flow has now slowed to crawl since I have to now search through fonts using FontBook then manually type in the font I need in the font character field. I believe this problem is due to a corrupt font. The trouble started after I installed a new font. I have since deactivated and deleted that font but the problem persists. I am not a "tech head" so I don't know how to generate those long code pages that some can. I can make pretty pictures with Adobe products but I can't service those Adobe products.
    Here is a list of things I have tried so far (at least what I remember):
    *     I have deactivated and deleted the font I believed to be corrupt.
    *     I have validated all my fonts with FontBook and deleted all corrupt files.
    *     I have turned off the "enable missing glyph protecting" in the preferences.
    *     I have used FontNuke to delete my font caches.
    *     I have reset my Pram.
    *     I have repaired all my permission with disk utility.
    *     I have removed all fonts except for the standard system fonts.
    *     I have uninstalled Illustrator and done a clean install (my system was migrated from a backup-however is has worked fine for months).
    *     I have deleted my library/preferences/abobefnt.plst.
    *     I have change the font preview to small.
    *     I deleted all my fonts and restored them from time machine from before I had installed that last font I believed to be buggy.
    *     I have prayed to Jebus.
    So far none of this has worked. The closest I got was after deleting all the corrupt fonts with FontBook. It worked for a day. Then the next day started crashing again. I am completely lost at this point. I don't know what else to do.
    Can anybody please help me figure this out?

    Update - I figured out how those crash reports are done so if anyone thinks they can help but needs to see a report please let me know and I will paste it into a reply.
    Update 2 - I tried turning off the font preview all together and this seems to have stopped the crashes so far. I think the bug can be isolated to this function. Problem is I need that function.

  • Illustrator CS5/CS6 on OSX 10.9.1 - Issue with loading fonts.

    I'm using Illustrator CS6 on OSX 10.9.1. Ever since I've upgraded to OSX Mavericks, Illustrator has stopped loading some of the document fonts even though they are enabled and available for other applications. I get the font missing dialog every time I open the artboard after a system restart. I usually resolve this by opening the Font Book app, disabling and re-enabling the fonts. This refreshes the artboard and the fonts then appear to work as normal. Initially, I suspected a compatability issue with Illustrator CS5 and OSX Mavericks, but after upgrading to CS6, I continue to have the same issue. The fonts in question are ttfs and these worked fine previously.
    How can I fix this?

    Do you use any third party font maangement tool?
    Which fonts are affected?
