Missing iTunes Library on Backup

My son has a Tiger laptop and he needed to get the hard drive replaced. He had a large iTunes library, which he dragged and dropped onto a CD. He then checked the CD and said that all of his music files were there.
After getting the new hard drive and resetting up his user account, he logged in and opened the CD with the iTunes backup. When he opened the backup library in iTunes it was empty. Does anyone know why he can't see the backed up files?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you look at the contents of the CD in the Finder, can you see the music files?

  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

  • Restored iTunes Library from backup, but Missing Artwork

    Hello
I had to reinstall iTunes 8. Fortunately, I had a clone of my HDD from just the day before. After the iTunes reinstallation, I replaced the iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files with my back up versions. Once I opened iTunes it took its time rebuilding the Library with the result being my ratings, play counts, and lyrics all where they were supposed to be. I am happy!
However, while that metadata was good, I noticed that I was missing artwork for a lot of the music files. It so happens that artwork was present in the iTunes Store purchased music, and in the files that had the artwork embedded via drag and drop (i.e., art was part of actual song file). On the other hand, every file that originally had images via Get Album Artwork was not referencing the Album Artwork folder (i.e., art not part of actual song file but referenced .itc files). So, no artwork.
How do I get that artwork back? All the images are still in the Album Artwork folder, restored from my backup, but I cannot find a way to make itunes reference them again! Why does the Library.xml restore all the iTunes-specific information for a track except the artwork?
Why do I not just use the Get Album Artwork feature again, you may be thinking? Because for most of the songs iTunes had the ID3 tag info wrong. After importing the music and matching the track names to iTunes Store to grab the artwork, I modified the ID3 info to more correctly reflect the artist, album, and track names. To rename the files to match iTunes Store, and then name them back to how I like them will take days.
So.. am I out of luck? Is there a way to actually backup iTunes information so that songs keep their references to the .itc files in the Album Artwork folder?
I thank you for your time reading this.
    cheers!

  • Sharing Itunes library and backup on external drive

Would appreciate if anyone can offer help on their experiences of external / NAS drives. I've been looking for the best solution to move my entire Itunes library to an external drive that I can put on the network so can have access from PC's, Mac and Iphone. Just recently moved to new MBP but still have PC's in home.
Have looked at varying solutions and think I've got it narrowed down to going for either QNAP  TS212 NAS or dedicated Iomega Network hard drive but seem to come over a lot of conflicting reports of these items not working well with MAC, particularily some comments on the use of Iomega which is the more cost effective solution.
A little background was planning on 2TB drives and partioning for Itunes library, Time Machine backups and PC backups. Have the S/W on MAC to read/write NTFS.
From my research the dedicated NAS would be appear to be the best answer but a lot more expensive than a network drive.
Can anyone advise of a network drive that they have experienced working well for this type of configuration?
Also is there any issues with syncing Iphone to an external networked library?
    Any Advice Appreciated
    Thanks

    Trev,
changing iTunes media folder location via preferences > advanced tells iTunes where to put new additions to your library, not where the current content is.
also, with your library now on the NAS, you must make sure the NAS is mounted on your desktop before launching iTunes.
... still showed an issue with the file locations and the exclamation marks.
you may have done something wrong initially (during re-locating your library to the NAS) because the exclamation marks usually appear when media files were moved using the finder and iTunes lost track of their location.
you might be able to use this script:
    iTunes Track CPR v1.3
This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."

  • HD failure.  Want to restore iTunes library from backup

The hard drive containing my music died. Fortunately, I have a (manual) backup of all the songs/artists on another hard drive. I also have a backup of the iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library files.
I moved the xml and library files to my Music folder. I attached the backup hard drive and changed the location of my library in iTunes preferences to look for my songs there. I hit Consolidate. All the songs show up in the library, but a load of them have the dreaded exclamation point and have no link.
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks so much for any help!

That setting in Prefs tells iTunes where to put music when you import...not where to find your library. Try launching iTunes while holding down the option key, then tell it where to find the library.

  • How to restore iTunes library from backup?

A large percentage of my iTunes songs have become corrupted. (Seemed to happen when I installed 7.3) Luckily I have a recent backup of my hard drive, so I want to reinstall the library.
What are the steps to take? Do I simply delete my old iTunes library folders and copy the "good" folders in their place? Or do I need to restore the iTunes database, prefs, etc.?

See if any of these articles help:

  • How to  restore ITunes Library from Backup hard drive?

My computer crashed. I restored it -- but ITunes was wiped clean. I have all my music files and ITunes Library backed up on an external hard drive. How do I get the library from the external drive back to the computer with playlists, artwork and all intact? I guess it is more complex than just dragging the file labled library into ITunes becuase the computer won't let me do that. When I go to the original songs they are all individually in folders accorging to the artist and album -- that will take days to copy each album 1 by 1 -- I have 3,700 songs.

What you first need to do is Place the music it the Location they was in before you restored. If you had songs on the C drive in My Music folder, place them there. If iTunes was reading the music from the external, not much you have to do sincve there already there.
Now with the Library file you have to make iTUnes take the file and recreate it, this is explained here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313

  • How do i find/create a missing itunes library .itl file?

I'm trying to transfer my itunes account from my old laptop to my new one and I have done this succesfully twice over the last couple of years but for some reason it's not working. I copy the whole itunes file to the new laptop but when I open itunes it says it can't find the ,itl file and it's right, I can't see it in there either. The only thing thats worked for me is using one the previous itunes library files but that is from two months ago and doesn't seem to be transfering my album artwork.
Has anyone else had this same problem? Can I created an .itl file?
    Any help would be fantastic!

That's exactly what I thought but it's not there and I have transfered the entire itunes folder, including atrwork etc, over to the new laptop.
I can find a previous itunes Library but that is from november. Is there a way to create the .itl file for my itunes library on my old laptop?
    Thanks

  • Locating missing iTune library on Apple TV

I recently bought a new Apple TV and synced it with my iTune, no problem. My nephew came and in my absence fiddled with Apple TV and his computer. Now I can not acess my synced iTune library. I see the Apple TV and it shows available space of 144GB which means my 14GB iTune library is still stored some where in it. How do I access it without having to re-sync?

You'll have to resync I'm afraid.
He's probably synced it to his computer and in the process deleted all your material - it can only sync to one iTunes library, others have to stream. Changing or deleting the sync library erases all content to give a clean slate.
The reported 144GB sounds about right for the usable capacity of the 160GB machines - there are various system software partitions on AppleTV that take some space up you can't use, and the computer software vs hard drive manufacturer definitions of 1GB differ (manufacturers mean 1GB= 1,000,000,000 bytes but OS software tends to use 2^30 bytes.)

  • Had to upload iTunes library fr backup, how do I upload iTouch playlist w/o

My iTunes library got corrupted and I had to restore it. Now I no longer have my playlists, etc. My question is how do I upload my playlists and other songs from my iTouch and iPod? When I connect them, iTunes tells me these devices can only connect to one library and they must be deleted. What do I do?? I have songs and playlists on these devices that I don't want deleted.
    Help!??

Restore it(the instructions to do so depend on how it was backed up), and if needed, launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and choose that library.

  • ITunes library restore backups from PC on Mac.

I'm currently moving from a PC to my new MacBook and I was wondering, this might be a stupid question, but, when I back-up my iTunes library on Windows iTunes can I restore the library on the MacBook or can I only restore the back-ups in the same iTunes program as I burnt it in?

    Mike --
The article you offer describes how to transfer the iTunes Music Folder from one place to another place on the same machine. My problem is more dificult: I need to transfer one or both of the iTunes library files (iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Music Library.xml) from one machine to another machine. Furthermore, the machine types are different; I need to go from a wintel platform running XP to a MacBook Pro running OS 10.4.9. Ideas?

  • Missing iTunes library after moving computer

I recently moved my iMac to a new home, and my iTunes library has disappeared. I have checked all of the usual places and apparently no media exists in my iTunes folder. It's also not showing up on my external hard drive. Any idea what might have caused this? And how to get it back?

I have this problem too. I can find all music I purchased on iTunes on the cloud.. but thousands of other songs are not in library. I do have them backed up in a mavericks back up, but if i could get them back in yosemite that would be ideal.

  • Missing iTunes library for music setting source

Went to add music from iTunes. The sample, theme, garageband comes up with options but the iTunes but it says "open iTunes 6 or later to populate this area" which is also greyed out. I have itunes 9.2 open before opening iPhoto - no go, also opened iTunes after opening iPhoto - still no go. What am I doing wrong and what can I do to correct this?
    ~bruce.

What format is the drive you are storing your iTunes Library on? Mac OS Format is highly recommended.
Ensure all your software is up to date. Mac OS X 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2 are current.
Try making a new iTunes Library and testing, you may have a damaged iTunes Library database.
1.) Open iTunes and drag 1 song out to the desktop.
2.) Quit iTunes (iTunes > Quit)
3.) Hold down the option key and launch iTunes
4.) Create a new blank library
5.) Add the song from the desktop
6.) Test several iLife programs (iPhoto,iMovie, iDVD, etc.) to see if this Library's contents are detected.
_If the new library is detected by the iLife programs then you have a damaged iTunes Library database.
_Follow this article to rebuild your database: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
_If the issue persists with a new iTunes library remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
Home > Library > Caches (I remove the whole folder. It will be re-generated upon restart.)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.itunes (There will be more than on. Remove them all.)
    Hope that helps.

To help we need more information ....
    At minimum, include:
The operating system you're using and its version.
The names and versions of other relevant products. iPod model etc.
A complete description of computer and connected peripherals.
Tip: a good description of your computer includes how much RAM and how much free hard disk space you have.
Have you done any system maintenance either before or after updating iTunes ?
Is your iPod running the latest software update ?

  • Is there any way to get an older version of the iTunes Library .xml backup file?

I turned my computer on today and my entire library was gone! (Files, thankfully, still available) I tried to restore from the .xml file, but the file was already updated with the new/empty iTunes before I could restore my original one. Is there anyway to get an older version of that .xml file back? PLEASE HELP!

Not from the store no, only the current version is available there - the only way is if you yourself have a previous version of it on, for example, a backup
