Missing TOC icons in MMC snap-in

Working on the help for a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in application. The merge goes well, and the help itself is fine. The interesting/perplexing part is that if you click on a Help button inside the application, the default TOC book and page icons do not appear. Pressing F1 brings the help up, with the appropriate icons. As required by the MMC, the TOC is binary compiled.
Here's what the TOC looks like when called from a Help button:
Not certain if this is relevant, but this issue was first noted in the company bug database back in 2005, where it was noted that "A binary table of contents is populated based on user demand. For example, in a table of contents where a book is located within another book, the second level book will not be populated until a user clicks it. (Microsoft)"
I am using RoboHelp 8, and the project was imported with settings intact. Is there anything to be done, either inside RH8 or by the developer?
Thanks in advance for all suggestions.
Mike

Hi, Mike,
When I open the .hhc file for the MMC 3.0 Help file in Notepad, I see that none of the TOC styles is explicitly set there. In other words, the five TOC styles that are checked in my screenshot are simply the defaults that are implemented when the Help author has not selected any of the available styles. For what it's worth, this is what you would see at the start of your .hhc file if you have explicitly set the same five TOC styles:
   <OBJECT type="text/site properties">
     <param name="Window Styles" value="0x800025">
   </OBJECT>
where 0x800025 is the sum of the five selected TOC styles (each one has a unique hexadecimal value). In the .hhc file for the MMC Help file, this line is missing.
Here is an old message in which I explained what the hexadecimal value is of each style:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.helpauthoring/msg/e88393893f0d6c02?hl=en
As you probably know, the binary TOC format supports a very limited set of authoring features, compared to the non-binary TOC format. When you switch to a binary TOC, most of the styles that you might use in a non-binary TOC are unavailable. Still, the binary TOC format does support book and page icons.
Perhaps it might help to test your MMC snap-in with a different Help file, created with a tool other than RoboHelp (FAR in this case). I've uploaded a Help file with a binary TOC to the following location:
http://rapidshare.com/files/292153651/Binary_TOC_Sample.zip.html
If you were to give this file the name of your own file and drop it into the location where MMC expects to find it, you may be able to determine whether the fault lies in the Help file or in the code that your snap-in uses.

What you are seeing is how Safari works now in iOS 5. There is no way to get that icon in Safari now. There other much better browsers available in the App Store. Look at iCab Mobile, Mercury, Atomic, ....
I have been running iOS 5x for so long now, that I don't even remember if that icon did appear in earlier iOS versions

  • Assign custom TOC icons

I am working with RoboHelp 8. In RoboHelp 6, I was able to assign an icon to a book or page in the TOC. I'm trying to do it in RoboHelp 8 (according to the steps below from RH's help), but I don't have the "Image" field (step 2) to select an image.
I will try and attach a screen capture so you can see what I'm referring to, but last time I tried, the image didn't get through to the forum.
    Thanks,
    Debbie
Assign custom TOC icons (HTML Help)
In the Table Of Contents pod, right-click a book or page. Select Properties.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Under Image, Auto indicates that the book or page uses the standard icon.
From the pop-up menu, select an icon.
You can assign other icons to books and pages after you add the bitmap file (BMP) to your project.
(Optional) Select Mark As New to display the standard icon with a red star. The star indicates to users that the TOC item contains new information.
    Click OK.
Version-control projects may have more options.
Note: The Table Of Contents pod displays all books and pages with the standard icons regardless of the selection you make at the Advanced tab. After you generate the project, you can view icons in the Contents pane.

That help topic relates to HTML Help (.CHM file) output only. Assuming you are outputting CHM files, what you need to do is set your default single source layout to Microsift HTML Help in your Single Source Layouts pod.

  • Create a custom MMC snap-in for Help Desk to edit Passwords.

    Hi all,
My scenario is similar to the scenario found here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/3f0dbf8e-636b-45fe-93db-f788d5b976fd/allow-help-desk-to-only-reset-user-passwords?forum=winserverManagement.
"I'd like to come up with a way for [Managers] to be able to change someone's password and/or unlock
the user account if applicable.  I'm hesitant to add them to the Account Operators built-in group since this would give them the rights to add/remove from groups, create or delete accounts and so much more that doesn't apply to their responsibilities.
A web interface for them to use or something other simple and small would be preferred.  I know there
are pricey 3rd-party apps that can compartmentalize system rights for user accounts, but first I'd like to explore simpler options."
My Question: Most of my scenario has been answered in the above link, however, I am not sure how to create a custom MMC snap-in that will allow Managers to edit user passwords from their workstation. Also, if I create a
MMC snap-in is there a way to deploy it with group policy to the managers or would I have to log in to each of the managers workstations and set it up manually?
All answers are greatly appreciated! Thanks for your help.

Please refer to the following article and check if can help you.

I don’t think that you can achieve the target directly by using group policy. Just another thought, you may create a script to deploy the MMC snap-in. Then add the script
as Logon script in Group policy and
assign user logon scripts to those specific users. Just a thought, thanks for your understanding.
If anything I misunderstand, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
    Hope this helps.

  • 'Missing Camera' icon with question mark!

I uploaded over one hundred movies from my camera. Some of them show up in my iMovie library but some have the 'Missing Camera' icon. The movies are in the iMovie contents folder as .mov files. so I know they are in my computer. Why won't they show up in my library? I have the latest 10.0.1 iMovie version. I am running 10.9, Mavericks.

Hi Phoenix, did you ever resolve this issue? I'm experiencing the same exact thing today and it's quite frustrating.
    Thank you!

  • IOS 8 upgrade and now missing airplay icon

I use AirPlay to stream music from both iTunes and Pandora on my iPhone 5 to an AirPort Express.  After upgrading to iOS 8, I no longer have an AirPlay icon in Control Center.  The AirPort Express and the iPhone 5 are both connected to the same network.  The AirPort Express is very new (purchased new from Apple within the past 90 days).  It all worked great before upgrading to iOS 8

    APPLE...
The problem of a missing AirPlay icon and missing AirPlay devices has not yet been fully resolved. The variations I've seen (on an iPad 4) are
    1) There is NO AirPlay icon, only AirDrop
    2) The AirPlay icon is there but when you open its popup the local device (iPad) displays at the top of the list followed by one other device. If you now wait the shown device scrolls sideways and shows another available device
    3) The AirPlay icon is displayed and its popup window contains a current list of all available streaming devices. This is what we want!
HInt: Possibly there is something going on concerning the streaming capabilities of the available AirPlay devices. I've noted that my AppleTV is usually first up when devices start to appear and this offers picture and sound streaming (also screen cloning from suitable devices). After this the audio only streaming devices appear.
APPLE PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS !

  • Pixelated TOC icons

I've just noticed that the quality of the TOC icons on my app look poor. Lots of jpg compression artifacts. This is on an iPad2 using the new IOS7 update. The TOC icons were created 70px x 70px. If they look bad on standard display they must look terrible on retina. Is there a solution?

OK, got it. Thanks for the tip, Bob, this is greatly appreciated.
Regarding the browse mode previews, I know it sounds weird, but we're working with full page JPG images of 2304 x 3072 px. at 108 in a 1048 x 736 document. The images looks almost perfect in the Retina screen of an iPad 3, so there's no reason for them to look blurry in the much smaller previews. Any idea why this happens?

  • Missing application icons after upgrade to 2.0

Missing application icons after upgrading to 2.0. Tetris, Clock and Voice recording icons are missing. Looks like the applications are still installed but they are not showing up with all the other icons.
There is absolutely nothing in the help about restoring icons.
Any ideas as to how I can get these missing icons to display again?
    Thanks.

  • The Strange Case of the Missing Network Icon

Can anyone help my buddy Tom - who is running a G4 iBook with OS X Panther? He is unable to get onto his wireless network and here is the problem in his own words:
"Had a moment to muck about in the iBook drive, following data crumbs from the all-pervasive Network software. Apparently, all that spinning of the drive over regions containing bits and bytes of the application managed to cobble together enough of Network to launch an e-mail, which I immediately determined had to go to you. This is strictly a spit-and-string enterprise, similar to a baling wire and soup can exhaust system fix, and likely the only e-mail I'll get off until I complete an entire system restore. Think of it as a faulty telephone connection - you can hear me, but I can't hear you. So, don't bother to respond, as your e-mail will probably languish in my Inbox for the time it takes me to resurrect OS X.
What brought me to this point is my reasoning Network isn't a stand-alone application like a word processor, but rather a "network" (clever, eh?) piece of software with files strewn through other software so they can access various aspects of it. For example, World Book Encyclopedia accomplishes a software update without launching Safari; connecting to its mother ship via but another piece of Network that happens to reside within the program. I guess this approach is what put the "i" in iBook, and it seems to work pretty well...until moments like this. Perhaps Steve Jobs outsourced to Hansel and Gretel to create a new marketing twist.
Anyway, I've talked this all up with a number of people, and the universal response seems to be; "Huh? I've never heard such a thing.". I even managed to mightily confuse Dave and he's got an awful lot of Mac expertise. But the real kicker, when explaining how I reasoned it all out, is when I mention the key to my understanding was when I noticed the missing Network icon. That's when their eyes glaze over and it's apparent they can't quite wrap their brain around the idea. I've deduced how to cajole the Finder to reveal this Archimedean moment, and included a pair of attachments so you, too, can share in my AHA!! revelation. Running this all past Dave had him agreeing I seem to have a handle on it, but the sheer complexity of all those .exec files squirreled here, there, and everywhere still had him scratching his head.
Interestingly, I have to coerce the Finder to display the icon example; you can't simply click it into existence. I do it by plugging in a travel drive, opening same, then ejecting it. The Finder then defaults to what you see (the word Network with no icon).
Speaking of attachments, I was so tempted to wade through all 70 (70!!) e-mails in my inbox, but was fearful my MacGyvered patch would fail before getting this off to you.
Time to fade back into the black hole from whence I came. When I close Safari it'll relinquish its tenuous grasp on the Network .exec file it's hacked to."
Any ideas on what's wrong and how it can be fixed? I'll see that they get passed on to Tom.
    G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   iMac

Before the mid-1980s, networking might have been implemented with a lot of goofy little routines (.exec's if you must) calling one another. About that time the CCITT (an international telecommunications standards committee made up of Academic and Industrial representatives) did a lot of work abstracting and then standardizing the functions that various parts of a network perform.
The CCITT refined the notion of a Layered Network Architecture and specified the types of activities performed in each layer. Shortly thereafter Apple implemented Open Transport and delivered it into the marketplace in System 7.5.3.
Apple networking has been very well-behaved and under control since then. It does not tend to "get lost" or "lose track of things". It really is very good. With only a few limitations, you can connect Macs running 7.5.3 through 10.3.9 and have File Sharing work without regard to what versions are talking to each other.

  • How do I reinstall a missing app icon

A couple of my app cons are missing from my apps folder as well as my dock, but the programs are still there. (I have to run them from spotlight.)
How do I reinstall a missing app icon?
    Thanks!

If you've found them in Spotlight, where are they? (hover over the app you found in the Spotlight list to see its path in a tooltip, or click Show All, then hover over the name of the app and see the path at the bottom of the window).
Once you open that location in the Finder, you should be able to drag them back to the Applications folder.

  • Dashboard widgets showing missing plugin icons

A couple of my Dashboard widgets - notably Flight Tracker and Unit Converter - appear with the missing plugin icons and do not work. How do I fix this?

Don, this can happen if you accidently overwrote these widgets (which should have been pre-installed with your machine) with PowerPC versions from an older Mac. Did you use migration assistant to transfer your files over to your new machine (and if so, could you have accidently copied over these widgets)?
Unfortunately, the only solution is to 1) reinstall OS X or 2) use Pacifist to extract the widgets from your OS X install disks.

    Hello All,
We also faced the same error, I would like to share the solution steps which we have applied.
    Solution :
Refer Note 1236002 - Error during the SAP MMC MSI installation or uninstallation
    As per the note :
Download utility “Microsoft Fix It” from http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
You have the option to run this utility online or you can download the folder structure following the instructions on this page
Then copy the Fix it Portable folder to the computer with the problem and run the Launch Fix it application
    What Microsoft Fix It fixes...
Removes bad registry key on 64 bit operating systems.
Windows registry keys that control the upgrade (patching) data that become corrupted.
Resolves problems that prevent new programs from being installed.
Resolves problems that prevent programs from being completely uninstalled and blocking new installations and updates.
Use this troubleshooter for an uninstall only if the program fails to uninstall using the windows add/remove programs feature.

  • MMC snap-in error

Does anyone know of a fix for a MMC snap-in error.  When ever I try to use Diskkeeper to defrag, a MMC snap-in error pops up.  It started after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3.  Microsofts knowledge base seems to acnowledge that this is a problem with the new MMC version 3 that was included in the service pack.  One possibility is that some programs are apparently to old to be compatable with the MMC version 3.  If that is the case, does Lenovo have an update or patch for Diskkeeper.  It was bundled with the Thinkpad when I got it.

I have not found a solution exactly.  I just clicked the button to permanantly ignore the error, and It has not caused any problem since.
