Mixing CPU models in same server pool in OVM 3

How contained is Live Migration when it comes to CPU model?
For example, if I have a 6 Core opteron system, (8439 SE) CPU that shows "Default_AMD_Family:16_Model:8_NoNx" in OVMM, what part of that needs to match to be compatible with another server with a different processor?
We want to mix 8439 SE (6 core) processor systems in a pool with 6176 SE (12 core) systems, how can I tell if those processors would support Live migration between the two?
Thanks,
Dave

By chance do you know how the behavior of a server pool with mis-matched pairs of servers acts? I know you can add them to the same pool, but is OVM 3 smart enough to make sure guests that were originally started on one server, only start on that kind of server in the future? For example, I dont want a server provisioned on an Intel CPU to reboot to an AMD cpu.Why not? Booting is easy and a guest that boots on Intel today will happily boot on AMD tomorrow. it's only live migration that's restricted. Everything else is fair game, assuming the storage and networking is identical across all the machines.

The documentation defines Server Pool as:
+Logically an autonomous region that contains one or more physical Oracle VM Servers.+
Therefore, should it possible to add multiple servers (physically separate VM servers) to the same Server Pool even though they are NOT using shared storage? When I tried to add the second VM Server to the Server Pool I received the following error:

  • Server Pool Virtual IP

    Hi all,
I have recently installed Oracle VM Server and Manager in order to make a demo. Everything seems to go right (setting common storage, enabling HA, creating server pool, managing virtual machines) but i have a problem. I want to set a virtual IP for my server pool because i want to show in my demo how master role switches from a server to another one, but at the time i set the virtual IP in "Server Pools/Edit" my pool goes Inactive and the servers Unreachable. • Server pool with non-identical HW/CPU

    Hi,
I know that the installation manual requests, that all VM servers in one pool are based on the same hardware. Now, will OVM refuse to add new VM servers that are based on a different hardware, especially with different CPUs? I do have E5506 and E5620/30 CPUs in my various hosts.
Precisely: the new OVM 3.0.1 server pool consists of hosts that are E5506 equipped, where as the old OVM 2.2.3 server pool consists of hosts that are E5620/30 equipped.
The reason I am asking is, that I have setup a new OVM 3.0.1 cluster and I have already begun to import my OVM templates as well as a couple of guests to the new cluster. Alas, some of my OVM 2.2. guests require more RAM than my current VM servers offer, so I wanted to setup one of my OVM 2.2 VM servers to join the new server pool, so I can reduce the downtimes as much as possible.
    Cheers

I have just tried this and it doesn't seem to work as I expected. I added another VM server to my server pool that has a E5630 CPU instead of a 5502 one and I neither can I migrate a guest from the Unassignes Virtual Machines folder, nor can I deploy a template to the new VM server, it either makes it to one of the first two VM servers.
Edited by: budachst on Sep 9, 2011 12:50 PM
Seems that my 2nd LUN where the storage repo resides doesn't get mounted on my newly added VM server, which explains nicely why no gues will make it onto the new VM server. I have verified that the LUN is visible on the new host, but adding the new server to the server pool only mounts the poolsfsmnt volume while not mounting the storage repo.
What can I do about that?

  • Server 2012 - Problem with multiple instances of RDS looking to the same license server. Server Pools requiring the wrong servers.

    Hi All,
I have two domains, prod.local and test.local.  On prod.local, I have a license server living on the connection broker.  I have created a two way trust between the domains so that the RDS instance on test.local can use the license server on prod.local.
When I first setup the RDS instance on test.local and point it to use the license server on prod.local everything appears to work, all servers recognize the license server.
However when I log off and back on, and click the RDS dashboard in test.local, the Remote Desktop Services overview states I need to add every server from prod.local to the server pool.  This is bothersome because the Remote Desktop Services on test.local
is still functioning, but I am no longer able to manage it.  When I add the servers from prod.local to the server pool I am displayed the setup for prod.local instead of test.local
Is there a way around this?  Can I use the same RDS license server key multiple times?
tldr: Using a different domain's license server causes my RDS instance in Server Manager to display the wrong RDS farm.

    Hi Nathan,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Please check the required ports must be opened on firewall.
    - To issue RDS Per User CALs to users in other domains, there must be a two-way trust between the domains, and the license server must be a member of the Terminal Server License Servers group in those domains.
    - To restrict the issuance of RDS CALs, you can add RDS Host Servers into Terminal Server Computers group on RDS Licensing servers.
    - Configure RDS licensing server on all RDS Host Servers in each domain/forest. You can do it through RDS host configuration snap-in or through a group policy.
    - Add administrators group of each domain/forest in the local administrators of RDS licensing server. This way, you’ll not get a prompt to enter your credentials when you’ll open RDS host configuration snap-ins in trusted domains/forests.

  • Linux/Unix Server Monitoring in Same Resource Pool as Windows Monitoring

    Hi
We are planning to deploy OpsMgr 2012 R2 for our single site infrastructure. We wish to monitor Windows, Linux/Unix and Network Devices. I know that separate resource pools are recommended for monitoring Network devices but can we have a single resource
pool that can monitor Windows as well as Linux/Unix systems?
If same resource pool can be used for Windows as well as Linux/Unix systems, what are the limitations of doing this vs using separate resource pools for them.
    Thanks
    Taranjeet Singh
    zamn

Hi Tranjeet, In answer to your questions:
    1. Having separate resource pools (in case of Windows and Linux systems) and single Management Server in each resource pool
A: Dedicated specific management servers for specific servers to be monitored from. (ie isolation of environments like test dev prod)
    2. Having single resource pool with multiple Management Servers managing Windows as well as Linux systems.
    HA

  • Question on adding new server to existing pool in OVM 2.2 environment

I have an existing iscsi based server pool with one server attached to the pool. I am adding a second ovm server. I have configured the iscsi and multipath modules and can see the repository lun.
I then added the server to the pool via ovm manager, but the server is not fully participating as the agent did not create a mount point for /OVS so I can't see the repos directiories from the new server. A "df" does not show the device as it does on the first server.
The manager gui does show the server as part of the pool even though we received an error.
In the ovm manager log, we see the following messages.
Check prerequisites to add server (ovm2.highlinehosting.com) to server pool (san_pool1) succeed
During adding servers ([ovm2.domain.com]) to server pool (san_pool1), Cluster setup failed: (OVM-1011 OVM Manager communication with ovm1.domain.com for operation HA Setup for Oracle VM Agent 2.2.0 failed: errcode=00000, errmsg=Unexpected error: <Exception: ha_check_cpu_compatibility failed:<Exception: CPU not compatible! {'ovm1.domain.com': 'vendor_id=GenuineIntel;cpu_family=6;model=44', 'ovm2.highlinehosting.com': 'vendor_id=GenuineIntel;cpu_family=6;model=46'}> )
I'm not sure why it's complaining about cpu compatibility as we are not using any HA features at this time, and both servers are identical in make and model. They are both equipped with the same cpu type and speed.
I checked ocfs2 network connectivity by executing the command "nc -zv nodename 7777", which ran successfully from both nodes. The manager was able to propagate a valid cluster.conf file to both servers. I restarted the ovs-agent service on the new server.
Are there any other configuration steps that I need to take on the new server before trying to add it to the pool? I do need to tread carefully as I have live guests running in the pool.
    Thx

    Bob Weinmann wrote:
If I have to go the route of using a separate pool for each server, do you have any suggestions on how I would be able to access the repos of server1 from server2 if server1 were to go down hard? I don't mean to access it as a repos for running the vms, but just to be able to copy the vm files over to the running server. This would be possible if you were using NFS for your storage, but not if you're using FC or iSCSI, as the LUN is formatted with the OCFS2 cluster ID of each pool, so probably wouldn't be able to be mounted by another pool. Your best bet is to upgrade to Oracle VM 3.0 so that you can create a pool that contains both servers: you won't have live migration, but HA will still work just fine.

  • --uuid restore & multiple server pools

    Greetings,
Greetings, we have a 3.1.1 environment with 4 disparate server pools (105 servers - 400+ VMs) managed by one centralized Oracle VM Manager host. Each server pool is in a different data center.
We would like to decentralize the management of each server pool (4 total) by standing up a local Oracle VM Manager host within each data center. We use OEM 12c for centralized management and will leverage Zones for role based access.
The goal is to establish a local Oracle VM Manager host in each data center without downtime, i.e. move each pools management from the centralized Oracle VM Manager host to a local Oracle VM Manager in each data center without downtime.
Would a --uuid install at each site allow us to decouple from the centralized Oracle VM Manager host and establish a local Oracle VM Manager host at each data center, i.e. move from one centralized Oracle VM Manager host, to a localized Oracle VM Manager host at each of the 4 sites?
    FAQs:
    a) currently we have one centralized Oracle VM Manager host managing all four server pools.
    b) each pool has localized SRs & networks, i.e. storage and networks are local to each data center.
    Thank you for your support!

Yes, you can have same servers part of separate server pools, however once server1 in pool1 is assigned then it can't be used again when assigning service profiles. This is done through a "Qualification" process.
Why you might do this?  I'm taking this right from the configuration guide..
A server pool contains a set of servers. These  servers typically share the same characteristics. Those characteristics  can be their location in the chassis, or an attribute such as server  type, amount of memory, local storage, type of CPU, or  local drive  configuration. You can manually assign a server to a server pool, or use  server pool policies and server pool policy qualifications to automate  the assignment.
If your system implements multi-tenancy through organizations, you  can designate one or more server pools to be used by a specific  organization. For example, a pool that includes all servers with two  CPUs could be assigned to the Marketing  organization, while all servers  with 64 GB memory could be assigned to the Finance organization.

  • Problem with multiple Toplink/JPA apps in same server

Anyone have experence of running serveral Toplink/ EJB-3 Web apps in the same server (OC4J, alas)?
We seem to get a problem with the second app failing to initialise toplink, with an entity not found message. Each app runs OK on it's own.

Yes, they access the same datasource and most of the tables overlap.
We're thinking it might help to have common entity classes and put them in a shared library, but I don't know if this is relevant (setting up shared libraries complicates testing and tends to snowball, I reckon we need about 15 jars all told).
I''ve had some funnies on OC4J before which I think may be to do with it's use of ClassLoaders, for example I initially put persistence.xml in the libary jar with the data model, but for some reason I get the entity not found error that way. It only seems to work if it's in the classes folder.
For the moment we're getting arround the problem with multiple OC4J instances in the server.

  • Is it possible to have 2 instances with the same name but different edition in the same server?

    Hi everybody!
    I have in a little trouble ....
    *** Scenario.
Oracle Enterprise Edition 11gr2 over Oracle Solaris 11
    3 instances: PROD, QA, DEV
    1 ASM instance
    Listener ports: 1520, 1530 & 1540
               Those are production system
    *** The problem:
Customer can't pay Oracle EE, they want to change to Oracle Std One
    Limitations:
I cant have a similar system to test.
    *** My idea:
Install Oracle Std One, in the same path:
    /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db          <-- EE
    /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_one   <-- Std Ed One

    /u01/app/11.2.0/grid_one   <-- Std Ed One        +ASM1
    Create databases:
    Asign similar disks to +ASM1
    Create DGs on +ASM1
Create databases: PROD, QA, DEV for Std Ed one
    - is it posible that they have same instance name?
    - if not, i suppose create as: PROD1, QA1, DEV1

Import data of final users in a window maintanance
    configure and up listener: 1521, 1531 & 1541

    1. - You cannot run two ASM instance simultaneously on one Server, but you can run many Oracle database simultaneously
on the same server which they use the ASM as storage type.
As a mentioned to  Hemant K Chitale, I've seen a system with several instances running
      About
"you can run many Oracle database simultaneously on the same server which they use the ASM as storage type."
I'm not sure if i can use the same ASM which is part of a current Enterprise Ed over the new installation with Oracle Std Ed One.
    2. - Why you want the same instance name?
If it is about the service name, which has by default the same instance name, just you can create a different instance name
and create the service name with the name that you wish.
    SQL> alter system set service_names='instance_name';
Is a similar name, not the same
    PROD, QA & DEV
    PROD1, QA1 & DEV1
I consider add "1" at the end to refer "Oracle Standar Ed One"
But I agree with you, i can customize throught service_name.

    Thanks

Seems like there's already an OCFS2 fs on that LUN. Could it be, that you tried to create a server pool on that LUN before, or that this target has been used to host some other OVM repository? If that is the case, then you need to wipe the LUN, before you can create a new OVM repository or server pool for that matter on it.
But please… double check that this LUN isn't in use anywhere else, since you could loose data, if you'd wipe it!

    Hi,
    I can see your point...
From my error :Server Failed Command: dispatch https://?uname?:[email protected]:8899/api/2 configure_server_for_cluster lun /dev/mapper/35000144f85151729 0004fb0000050000c696b251dc81a087 , Status: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcException: exceptions.OSError:[Errno 2] No such file or directory
/dev/mapper/35000144f85151729 is the path where the server pool uses for it's own...
    and
0004fb0000050000c696b251dc81a087 is the Pool file System...
On storage menu, at SAN Servers - Unmanaged iSCSI Storage Array - where I see my storage wich is with iSCSI at Add/Remove Admin Servers I added this new server.
Also I went to Rescan Physical Discks for my new server.
When I go with putty on my server and run
    df -h
    I don't see any storage...
I belive I missed one step but I can't find wich one...

  • Creation of server pool in dhcp environment fails

    Hi,
I am new to Oracle VM, please help me with my aim of setting up an "as simple to configure as possible" virtual machine. I chose the "all-in-one" approach, mentioned in the documentation, where server-pool-master, utility-server, vm-server are all on the same machine.
Now, I have a problem, which consists in the dhcp based network environment in my workgroup. How can work with fixed IP's in order to configure my server pool?
Can the server pool virtual IP be the same, as the IP of
    Server Pool Master
    Utility Server
    Virtual Machine Server
    Many thanks in advance

Do i understand you correctly, that it is possible to configure the Oracle VM server and the pool and the utility server and the vm guests on one machine?Yes.
Do i understand you correctly, that i should assign the pool the very same physical IP of the Oracle VM server host?In the case of a single server, the pool doesn't need an IP address.

  • Added server not listed in Server pool (not even on the list of servers)

    Hello VM Gurus,
I'm playing with Oracle VM and I've encountered problem I can not solve of find existing solution.
I'm playing with Oracle VM version 2.1.5.
I have 3 psychical machines (let say A,B,C). On every machine I have installed WMWare workstation. I've created all together 5 VMWare virtual machines.
On Physical machine A I have 1 VMWare virtual machine named A1. This is used as Virtual Machine Server.
On Physical machine B I have 2 VMWare virtual machine named B1 and B2. B1 is used as Oracle VM Manager. B2 is used as Virtual Machine Server (also Server Pool Master and Utility Server)
On Physical machine C I have 2 VMWare virtual machine named C1 and C2. Both are used as Virtual Machine Serves.
    1. I've Created Pool of servers (HA set up) and first added server B2.
    2. After that I've added to pool A1 without any problems
    3. After that I've added to pool C1 without any problems.
    3. After that I've tried to add to pool C2. Process (wizard "Add server") finishes without any problems. But server does not appear on the list of servers in pool. It does not exist On a list of servers neither. If I try to add server again I got error OVS-2005 saying that this server is part of another Pool.
If I stop agent on C2 , delete folder /etc/ovs-agent/db and start agent, I can again add server, but results are same (it does not appear on list of servers. Another try to add server results in OVS-2005 error).
    If done also this process:
    1. I've stopped agent on C2, deleted folder /etc/ovs-agent/db and starte agent
    2. I've removed C1 from pool
    3. I've added C2 to pool without any problems
    4. I've tried to add c1 to Pool. Same problems as in the past with C2 (not appearing on the list of servers).
I went though agent logs, VM manager logs. I ca not spot any problems. I've connected to database with SQL plus and there was no evidence of failed server there (so data is really not written to repository).
I run out of ideas. What could be wrong? where to look whyt is problem. How to diagnose problem. I believe that Oracle VM somehow treat this two VMWare servers as one, but I can not prove this.
Somebody else had this problem? Any hint what to diagnose further? I understand my configuration is a bit stupid, but I'm trying to get familiar with Oracle VM.
    Any hint will be appreciated.
    Regards
    Darko

Or use one machine as the NFS server and Oracle VM Manager and the other two as Oracle VM Servers. Trying to run a Type 1 Hypervisor inside a Type 2 hypervisor is fraught with peril. I'm surprised you actually got this far, to be honest. :)

  • Can't remove OVM server from server pool

    Hi!
I tried to remove Oracle VM server using OVM. Both have version 3.0.3
I use Add/remove wizard from server pool. Selected my single server from list and pressed OK. Nothing happend. Server still in pool.
I tried to do so when server was online, offline. Results are the same. I reinstalled OVS, but now i'm can't discover it again even i configured different name and IP address. MAC is the same and it's the reason.
So, is it any way to force delete OVS using any tool or i have to reinstall OVM and it's repository?

    I did it but i don't know how :)
I tried to discover re-installed server with new IP and name. This operation was failed.
I changed IP address on re-installed server to old one. And re-discovered server with old name. After that it appeared in unassigned machines list. So, i was able to delete it and also delete old server pool
