Mixing DVCPRO HD 720p 60 shot at 24 frames and 30 frames (with HVX-200)

I realize my first mistake was shooting at two different frame rates. So when I edit these two different types of HD footage, I notice the one shot at 24 frames has a slower feel. Whereas the 30 frame clips playback nice and smooth.
How do I now convert the 24 frame stuff to playback smoothly like the 30 frame footage? (I recored straight to a Firestore 100 in quicktime format. These are DVCPRO HD quicktimes at 59.94)
Please advise,

They will never look the same. The reason for shooting 24fps vs 30 fps is to get that different look.
Now, to get the BEST result in matching the two, put your 24fps clips in Compressor, create a new set of settings that match your clip's settings exactly (same compressor, etc). Chose 30fps and change the retimming option to BEST (Motion Compensated). This uses Shake's optical flow technology and will create a 30fps that will be very smooth. But again, there will still be a difference.

  • Does Premiere Elements support DVCPRO-HD? How do I ingest and work with HD-footage from HVX-200?

    Hi there,
I work with Premiere Elements 11 on a windows PC, and I try to ingest HD-footage from Panasonic HVX-200 Camcorder. Premiere Elements only recognizes thumbnails, but not the footage itself? What do I have to do? Or does Elements only support SD-footage? Do I have to install DVCPRO-HD Codec? Where do I get it then?
Thanks for your help!, yours Mike

    Welcome to the forum.
PrE does support HD material, just not all of it.
With DVCPRO HD on P2 media, I am not sure that you will be able to work directly with the media files from your Panasonic in PrE. This is the list of supported formats: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premiereelements/using/WSeffff8bffc802084-1665492e133c9c19956- 8000.html#WS300DE01D-F057-4639-96D1-F99EEE163C24
PrPro can Import and edit DVCPRO HD on P2 media. The Panasonic P2, along with its metadata is supported: http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/extend.html

  • Frames and Fields?

What is the relationship between frames and fields with regards to DV? Why is video shot at 60i also considered 30 fps in Final Cut Pro?
    Thanks.

I believe two interlaced fields equal 1 frame of video. And if you're teaching the subject you may want to get picky and realize in DV, 30fps is actually 29.97. This is why we lose a second in our FCP timeline after a few minutes.
I actually wanted to politely try to hijack this thread, because I'm having a interlaced field playback issue... Any intermediate or pros may enjoy the challenge, thanks and sorry.

  • Premiere Elements 13; the wheel mouse doesn't increase frame by frame but 11 frames by 11 frames.

    Hi,
On the same PC with the same mouse, this one worked well on Premiere Elements 7. Do you have meet this problem ? Many thanks.
With the buttons forward and backward we have frame by frame and also with the keyboard.
On the PE 13, before scrolling the Wheel, you have to activate the mouse by clicking in the free area beside the screen because in an another place you haven't an action of this Wheel.

    Good morning,
I try to be clear because it is very hard to explain and incredible.
On these red points I go and place the pointer of the mouse following three different cases.
1 case : play pause and i click the mouse pointer on the red point ; at this time by scrolling the Wheel I increase or decrease the time code by steps of 11 frames.
2 case : play pause and i place the mouse pointer on the red point ; this time the steps are of 7 frames.
3 case : play pause, i click on the PE icon cercling in red, return on the red point and the steps become by 1 frame. Of course, it is not satisfying.
I have try by 25 frames per second and also 30 frames. From an european camcorder and an american one.
The same result in Expert mode than in Quick one.
"it is what it is" OK it is too bad because on the Premiere Elements 7, it was well working and very useful so now I'll work by the keyboard to decrease or increase frame by frame.
Many thanks to have read my comments,
    Bernard

  • Mixing Hi-8, VHS into DVCPRO HD 720p/24 Timeline?

I've got a DVCPRO HD 720p/24 timeline. I need to bring in material from other old school formats (Hi-8, VHS, mini-DV) to be added in. How should I go about this? I'm thinking copying all to DVCAM, then digitizing in. From there, do I need to Upconvert? Or can I just drop it all in the Timeline and work? How does one deal with the 29.97 / 23.97, interlace/progressive and 4:3 / 16:9 differences?
Any advice, or pointers to discussions, tutorials, links, etc would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure this is a really common headache-inducing question, but I can't seem to locate an answer.
    Thanks!

First, in the CANVAS, turn on IMAGE+WIREFRAME in the box drop down menu. Then, Layer your footage. Put the main shot on V1. Now put it again on V2. Double click on the image on V1 and crop one side until it starts to cut into the video. Click on the clip on V2, go to the canvas and drag it until it is visible. Throw filters on it to set it apart. Gaussian blur to REALLY blur it out. Perhaps the 3-way color corrector and turn the saturation all the way down to get B&W, or just partway down. Anything to make it look interesting. Put the same clip on V3, double click on V1 again and crop the other side. Drag the filters from the clip on V2 to the clip on V3 (you might need to crop the clip on V2 to clear the area on that other side) by double clicking on V2 to get it into the viewer, then click on the filters tab and drag and drop.
Upconverted stuff look good? As good as it can. I worked on a History Channel show that was easily 50% DV, VHS and betaSP....while all of our A ROLL and Interviews were DVCPRO HD. The archival stuff was not. It looked decent. It will NEVER look like real HD...give up that ghost right now. You are taking a smaller image and blowing it up 200-300%. And if it is DV...it is already highly compressed. Compressor will do a better job of smoothing out the edges and ridding of the interlacing than FCP can. A terranex box will do even better, as will a Kona 3.

  • 64 Min DVCPRO HD 720p 60p

Typically I dont double post, but this is also in the Authoring section, I dont know where the problems lies, but I have a feeling it's in a little of both
I am in a extremely messy situation. I cant what I am doing wrong. I shot a Ballet DVCPRO HD 720p 60p Direct capture into Final Cut. High Definition has such great quality in the RAW, and when I compress and Author the DVD, it *****, no detail, and I loose 1/2 the lighting. I am new to the post production side, and beg for your help. If anyone who works with DVCPro HD and 1 hour to DVD I would greatly appreciate it. Also am I suppose to be using a special DVD?

I actually check my FinalCut to Compressor Export against the frame of the editing timeline image, and they are almost identical. NOW, When I pop in the DVD, Differnt stary. Night an day on softness. Color and brigthenss is actaully brighter, and blurrier. Brigtheness is not night and day, I wish there was a way to take a snap shot of my DVD, but it says I can when DVD player is open. So to me, it seems as if DVDSP is doing something to it.

  • DVCPRO HD 720P Capture File  Pixel Dimensions, etc.

I'm crossing over from Final Cut 7 where I've been using AJA LHi card to capture DVCPRO HD 720P 59.94 tape from the Panasonic 1400 deck successfully for years. In Premiere I've adjusted all the capture settings and sequence settings to conform to DVCPRO HD 720P 59.94:
-Pixel format: MC DVCPRO HD 720P 60
    -Capture format: AJA Mov Capture
    -Video format:  720P 59.94
    BUT....
-My Premiere capture tests look not only slightly horizontally stretched, but  cropped about 30 pixels only on the right of the full raster frame in both Premiere and in playback in Final Cut 7.  This is true for the clip as it plays on the timeline as well.
-When I launch the clip in QT player it has the same cropping problems but is playing as 960x720, not defaulting to 1280x720 as normal 16:9. Final Cut captured clips play in QT as default 1280x720. So the file as captured in Premiere is missing a tag that tells QT how to resize it. I'm in QT 10.4 by the way.
-I've imported captures from Final Cut into Premiere and they look fine.
-The Premiere captured clip in the bin shows as 960x720 which is correct for DVCPHD, but in parenthesis shows (1.3333) which I've never seen anywhere before.
-The folks at AJA think this is a Premiere issue not a capture card issue, and I tend to agree.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you

I'm wondering if what the original camera may have embedded into the file is jumbled in with the 1400 and "crashing into" what both FCP and PrPro expect to 'see'. From the above grab, PrPro is thinking that this is just a P2 format Panny camera, shooting "standard" P2 stuff. Which this clearly is not.
At this point ... wondering is say Kevin-Monahan could jump in here & provide some assistance? At least, he'd know who to talk with about this. So might shooternz ... he's been around this sort of thing for many years.

I'm about to start a job shot on DVCPRO HD 720p 25 PAL on Friday, but through research I thought I could capture at this rate, I've just found out that you can only do it of P2......

    Help...........

You need FCP 5.1.2 to work with 720p25 footage. And make sure that you have SHOW ALL selected in the Easy Setup window.

  • Mixing DVCPRO HD and Animation in one Sequence...Thoughts?

I'm working on a project that was shot in DVCPRO HD 720p,
and I need to include a lot of clips that have been processed
to create alpha channels, so I'm using the Animation codec
(square pixels) to bring them in from Shake.
With all the layering I'm doing, now the only clip using DVCPRO HD
is the background. Playback is quite choppy, but it's all working
    when it's rendered.
Just wondering, would it make sense to set the sequence to
Animation codec, with square pixels, and if so, should
I set Render preferences to RGB instead of YUV?
Or maybe I should convert the sequence to ProRes 422?
Or should I just keep it set to DVCPRO HD?
My final output could be either codec. I'll probably make
some DVDs, HD H.264s, and a Flash movie by the time I'm done.
If you can offer any advice or point me to a workflow
description that addresses extensive layering in FCP,
I've got some chocolate covered stars to give away.
    Thanks for your time!
    Les

If I could afford FCP 7, I would definitely use ProRes 4444.
    Sigh.
Meanwhile back in my world, I didn't quite understand
    what Luca wrote:
    gogiangigo wrote:
you may want to offline your edit using Apple ProRes
(use composite modes if required) and when you are done...
    online everything for the master.
If I use ProRes 422 for my offline codec, how do I access
    the alpha channel? Seems impossible.
I was using a bizarre workflow, which I may use again.
Whenever I had a Shake render with alpha, I would render
out 2 DVCPRO HD files: One with the RGB data, and one
B&W with the alpha data. Then I would place them
both on the FCP timeline, with the RGB track using
the B&W track in Travel Matte Luma mode.
That technique works OK, but you've got to remember
not to premultiply, since with non-alpha clips,
you don't have the option of setting the alpha to Black.
Anyway, Luca, if you could explain your idea in a little
more detail, that would be cool.
Anyone else out there doing complex layering in FCP?
    FCP 6, that is.

  • Photoshop titles in DVCPRO HD 720p timeline

I am making titles for a short video shot on DVCPRO HD 720p. The timeline settings are the same as the footage.
The titles were made in photoshop, 1280x720, pixel aspect square. When the .png's go into the timeline, there are steps on the edges. Not as bad as DV steps, but annoying all the same. Why?
    Thanks

    hmmm
I think we are missing some information. Is it a PAL timeline? Do you have a PAL monitor? How is the monitor connected? Are you using an iMac or a Mac mini? Did you have waffles for breakfast?

  • Convert 29.97 to 23.98 timebase DVCPRO HD 720P 59.94

Hi, I shot a music video on the HVX-200 with a setting of 720p60 (59.94) and a framerate of 23.98. However one of my shots was set shot erroneously at 720p30 (29.97). When I play it back, the shot stutters as the camera was booming down. I can't use the DVCPRO Frame Rate Converter as it gives me an error message of only being able to convert clips shot at 59.94.
Any ideas how to convert this?
    Thanks!

DON'T use CInema Tools and CONFORM. That will slow the shot down...in a destructive manner. Meaning that it will alter the clip and you can't go back. You'd have to reimport.
Try Compressor. Advanced Conversion. Make sure you make all the settings as BEST.
Also try Nattress.com, Standards Converter (demo available). This does a decent job.

  • Can v5.1.4 import DVCPRO HD 720P 24PN?

    Hi all,
Can FCP 5.1.4 import DVCPRO HD 720P 24PN from a Focus Enhancements Firestore FS-100? Or do I need v6?
    Thanks for your input.

    Yes it can.
How it is important depends on what firmware the FS-100 has and how you have acquired the footage.
If you have 720/24pN, which is only the equivalent because the HVX200 can only stream non native out firewire, then organize the clips first in the FS100 if you shot P2.
If you shot QuickTime 24pn equivalent, then just mount the drive the HD mode
What settings did you use in the cam and on the FS100?

  • Capturing dvcpro hd 720p 25

I've tried capturing through my black magic extreme card via SDI but the results look awful, then I tried prores with much better results but the frame size is 1280X720 not 960X720 which is what I need. Any ideas why the quality is so low with the dvcpro hd 720p 25 codec and any other codecs I can use which will give me the same frame size?
    Much Thanks, Matt

Why not simply import the files via firewire in the original codec or, if the material is stored on a P2 card, simply drag the files onto the hard drive and use log and transfer?
The DVCProHD 720 960x720 dimension is how the codec stores the material. When it is played, it is translated into a full frame size of 1280x720. If you move the DVCPro material to a ProRes codec, the 1280x720 preset is appropriate.
Or did I not understand your problem/question?
How is the material stored? Tape, P2 cards?
What are you using as the capture device? VTR, camera, P2 card reader?
    Version of FCP?
    Version of OSX
    Version of QT?
Computer model? (there is no such thing as a G5 Mac Pro)
Additional information may help clarify things
