Mixing for suround video

What do you use to mix in surround sound? I have gateway computer with 5.1 surround outputs but I only get two channels. I would like to get the subwoofer to work as well as all speakers with encore and premiere.

Clare,
A couple of questions:
What soundcard are you using? What drivers are installed for it? What video editing program (NLE) are you using? What audio editing program are you using?
Depending on how your audio system is configured, you might have to adjust your settings in the soundcard driver's control panel, accessed from the Windows Control Panel. For instance, my Realtec OB chip uses Creative Soundblaster 24-bit Live drivers and all of my Surround Sound settings are done from its interface.
You will also need to have all the necessary speakers connected, but this is pretty obvious.
For use of Dolby Surround 5.1 Sound in Encore, you then need to take Harm's advice and use the SurCode 5.1 Encoder in your NLE, to export to WMA or AC3 audio. I always Export as primary streams: video to DV-AVI (no Audio) and AC3 (5.1 Surround) for Importing into Encore.
In response to your post in the 5.1 article, as Joe Bowden points out, Encore will only "passthrough" Dobly 5.1 for monitoring purposes, but will handle it well, when you burn to DVD.
If you use Premiere Pro as an NLE, you might want to take a look at:
http://www.adobe.com/ap/tips/prepsurround/page2.html
Even if you use other software, this might be of a big help. Also see the Premiere Pro-wiki: http://ppro.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
and do a search for "Surround Sound." I do not have that particular page bookmarked, but there is good material on production of Dolby 5.1 in the wiki.
Also, there are several good posts on 5.1 Surround Sound in this forum, with some great contributions by Neil Wilkes. Do a search of this forum and read and read. Also, if you are not finding all that you need with your search, find any article by Neil Wilkes, and click on his name. That will reveal his most recent posts.
Let's address your system's setup first, then you can do a bunch of fun reading on going to the next step. See the "questions" at the top of my post.

You need a special plug to use the iPod's mic in for the headphone jack. If you compare a headphone plug for a set that includes a mic and one that does not you can see that there is a difference.

  • Mixing for Video (lip sync issue)

    Hi All,
I did a Live Concert Recording on Zoom R24 recently (1 hour). I realized that the Audio Recorded on Zoom R24 ( 24 bit 48khz ) doesn't match the Recorded Video (DSLR) no matter preview in FCP or Logic Pro. Everything just perfect at the beginning, started to out of sync (slighly) at the 30 minutes, and getting worse at the ending portion.
What do you say? Is that caused by Zoom Recorder for it doesn't have a "Clock" or "Timecode"? Appreciate to your replies in advance!

Hmm. I wouldn't ask for the video guy to export the audio for you. Presumably the camera audio is attached to the video file you are viewing in Logic. (I guess that's how you know the camera audio is in sync, right?)
So. Import the audio from the .mov (or.dv, whatever you are using) It will make its own new track, and be self titled by the name of the video file. It will be in sync with the video, because that's where it came from.
On your arrange page, drag that track next to your zoom track. You will see when the waveforms start to get out of sync, and be able to hear it as well. As I suggested earlier, pan one one side, the other the other.
To re sync your zoom audio, find a spot before the sync gets too bad, preferab;y between songs, or some other point that's might not be so noticeable. Split the zoom track there, and nudge the section on the right either a frame or two left, if it is getting behind, or right if it is getting ahead. Crossfade the new join. You might need to experiment to find the best edit spot, and drag the leading edges of the newly created regions to cover the hole, if there is one.
If it was me, i"d do one frame - ish every ten minutes ish. That way you will gradually be corecting the error, rather than doing it all in one or two clumps.
This actually gets done in far more projects than you may think.
And lastly, maybe Seeren is right after all. Maybe the drop frame issue between Logic and the camera is causing the problem. Ask your video guy what frame rate he is working at, and make sure you set the logic video setting to be the same. And if it is set correctly, which I think is probably the case, then the nip and tuck will fix it.
In Australia, our TV system is PAL, which is 25 frames no matter what, no matter what. Kind of simpler, huh?
    Anyway, good luck!

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • Thumbnails for HD videos not appearing in Photoshop Organizer

How do I get thumbnails to appear in .mts (Canon HD) videos in Photoshop Organizer (bundled with Photoshop / Premiere 8?

    Hello A.T. Ramano,
First and foremost I would like to take you in advance for any and all help.  I will try to answer your question to the best of my abilities but please remember I'm not all that technically savvy in these matters.
    1.     Elements Organizer is version 8.0.  Premiere Elements is version 8.0.  I've tried to down load the update but get a message that is already installed.  Not to sure what you ment by sourse, unless you're wanting to know that Premiere was installed via DVD disks.
    2.     File extension for HD video files is (.mts).
    3.     The camera is a Canon Vixia HF S20.
    4.     I'm not sure where to look for compression levels.  Video quality is set at the highest level on the camera (MXP).
    5.     Thumbnails show up in the Premiere elements organizer (sometimes), but never in the Elements Organizer.
    6.     Haven't tried downloading the trial version of Premiere 9.0, that's next.  If that doesn't work was thinking about uninstalling Premiere 8.0 and re-installing it.
    7.     QuickTime Player is version 7.6.9.
    8.     Windows Media Player is version 11.0.6002.18311.
    9.     Pixela Image Mixer 3SE player is version 6.0.1.  Tried to update all three players and received a message that players were up to date.
    10.   Video is shot in 16:9 mode, Super Fine / 1920x1080, Cinema Mode progressive frame rate of (PF24).
    11.   Computer is a Dell Studio XPS laptop, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40 GHz, 4.0 GB of ram, Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit operating system service pack 2, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 video card with 1GB of on board ram.
If there is other information you require, please don't hesitate to ask,  Thank you again for your help.

  • Make A headphone mix for vocalist using saphirepro14 interface

Hi. Can someone tell me the best way to set up a headphone mix in logic x.  I have a saphire pro 14 interface and was wondering what the best way to be able to increase/decrease volumes of headphone mix for vocalist while not affecting the level of the overall mix.  Any ideas or techniques would be greatly appreciated...i have seen videos talking about bussing out sends, but was wondering if there is a better way or anything more specific for the saphire pro14 interface...thanks

Here's an (admittedly busy) example of how I do it:
Note that all of the MON1 sends go to the channel strip marked Mon1(9). The output of this bus goes to Pamp1 (RED - right after the stereo outs), which is actually my RME's output 3&4. I labeled in Pamp1 or Phamp1 (sorry for the inconsistency) because that physical output goes to one of my headpone amps.
Just for additional info, the output (RED) marked 'Phone B' goes directly to my RME's embedded headphone output (which happens to be output 9&10 on my RME).
Hopefully this didn't confuse things further.

How did you save your Timeline content which included the narration clip produced with the project's Narration Tool?
Publish+Share/Computer/ and then what? And, what preset? And, for that preset, did you use the default settings of the preset

  • Mixed frame rate video clips on the same Blu-ray disc

Before I go into the detail, this actually isn’t an issue for me, but more of a finding the answer to a different question, so please bear with me.
To explain:  I live in the UK, and I’m forever challenged by the different native video frame rates imposed by the PAL and NTSC standards.  Every consumer camcorder I’ve ever seen only produces HD output (1920 x 1080) at either 50 fields/second interlaced, or 25 (sometimes 50) frames/second progressive.  Some action cameras (Go Pro) I possess allow me to record at 30fps progressive, in full HD, which for fast movement is simply better.  This in itself is not really a problem, but I use other software (all USA sourced) for video production whose best results are only visible when the finished HD output is 1080/60i.
Having mixed frame rate video is a real problem for the DVD standard, but no so much for Blu-ray. Indeed Adobe Encore neatly gets around this problem, so I can actually author a Blu-ray disc which contains full HD video clips that may be either 50i or 60i.  Both types of video exist on the same disc, and when played back through a Blu-ray player/TV combination, the resultant video clips are shown correctly. Player and TV switch seamlessly to the correct setting to handle the video content.  So, I have a solution to my problem, but at the same time, a question I can’t find an answer to, which is this:
Does the Blu-ray specification allow video clips of different native frame rates (i.e. 25fps and 30fps) assuming the resolution is the same, to co-exist on the same Blu-ray disc as a supported feature?
It works, but I can’t find one shred of information that says what I’m doing is supported.
    Comments are most welcome.
    Regards,
    Steve

    Stan Jones wrote:
Encore requires you to specify the project type as PAL or NTSC (whether you start it as Bluray or DVD), and does not allow you to change it later. Also, if you try to create a transcode type for PAL in an NTSC project you cannot get to the 25 fps setting (and therefore, I think, cannot do it).
But if you import a Bluray legal 25i file to an NTSC project, it is happily added.
DVD player conventional wisdom is that PAL players handle NTSC disks, but NTSC players do not generally handle PAL disks. I never quite understood why the TVs were not more of the issue. Do Bluray players even differentiate between PAL and NTSC?
Even if the player will handle PAL, the TV may well not do so - so there is more going on.
NTSC uses (generally) 60Hz systems whereas PAL is 50Hz hence the problem.
Do not try to mix standards as it will not be allowed - however, multiple frame rates are allowed as long as they are within spec for that TV standard.
They are best avoided though - otherwise you run a very real chance of serious asset truncation as the TV display switches between different resolutions & frame rates.

  • 5.1 mix for blu-ray from 6 mono tracks

    Hi there,
I'm not too well versed in creating 5.1 mixes at the moment. Here's the project I've set out to do...
I currently have a 1hr 45min Apple Pro Res video with six mono tracks intended for a 5.1 mix for Blu-ray and DVD authoring. All six channels are in the order they should be in for 5.1 (i.e. 1st track LEFT, 2nd track RIGHT, 3rd track CENTRE, etc.). I'm just having difficulty in bringing the file back into Premiere and exporting it for Blu-ray H264 setting with the 5.1 mix functioning properly.
    Please advise,
    Mike

I'm a bit late coming to this thread.
As Jim says the problem with Premiere is that you can't just send a track to the LFE.
One work around that I use-
Put the LFE mono track on 2 tracks in your sequence. Send one track to centre and LFE and the other track just send to centre BUT put the invert audio effect on that track. This will cancel out the feed to the centre just leaving the LFE.

  • Info please...control surface and mixer for fcp and audio recording

i'm looking for a control surface for final cut pro and also xlr/line inputs for recording guitar and vocals in cubase or audacity.
read all the info here after numerous searches. still some questions.
was looking at the tascam 1082 but not sure of the build quality...i saw one and it looked a bit cheaply built. the two demos at guitar center were falling apart. didn't look nearly as well built as the mackie. also i have been reading here and elsewhere about bugs/problems etc.
was looking at the m-audio...not sure about that one...$1250...
was also looking at mackie control surface...but no firewire...how do you hook it up to a mac? also no audio inputs. what would i need to buy to work in conjunction with that for recording audio? if i bought the mackie, i'd still have to buy an audio inpur device and that would end up costing as much as the m audio.
i know i could just buy a mixer for recording and forget the control surface...i already have a shuttle pro which works fine and i have gotten used to using the mixer in fcp...no problems. but the motorized faders on a control surface sure would be nice
    so questions:
how does the mackie connect to a mac and what other device(s) would i need to record audio and how would they hook up...would they play nice together?
ppl who own the tascam...happy with it? used the mic and line preamps? are they noisy?
do i need an additional firewire bus reguardless of which control surface i get?
how does one route the audio for these when in fcp? i currently route my audio through my dsr 11 deck. will the control surface just go through firewire or would i have to actually jack into the control surface with additional cables and have to remove my present cables from my speakers everytime i want to use the control surface?
sorry so many questions. it's really tough to make an informed decision in buying something if you don't understand the mechanics of it.
btw, appreciate the info so far that i found doing my searches.
    thanks
    carl

I've got the Tascam FW1082 and I absolutely love it. I can't believe I ever edited without it. I'm considering upgrading to the 1884 in the future.
As for the mic preamps, they sound great. Nice and clean. There's no such thing as a line preamp, but the line inputs are clean as well.
For routing, I go to the 1082 via firewire until I turn on my external video monitor, at which point I send both video & audio to the deck and route the audio from the deck into a pair of the mixer's analog inputs. That way you avoid the delay of external monitoring. The 1082 allows you to listen to both the computer & the inputs at the same time, so switching back and forth is seamless.
As for durability, I've had it out on a few location recordings, but most of the time it's on my desk. It's still in mint condition. I'm sure if it was on a display where any 10 year old could come mess with it, it wouldn't be in as great of shape, but then again, a Neve console wouldn't look that great if every little brat that walked in the door could play with it. If you take care of your stuff, you'll have no issues with this mixer.

  • Considering dumping my iMac for a PC used for DSLR video editing on Premiere CS6. Help!

So I edit mostly 1080p DSLR footage taken from my canon T3i camera. I purchased a 2011 (the latest model) iMac a little over a year ago, upgraded the RAM to 12GB and it has worked reasonably well. I purchased the base model for $1200 which has a quad core i5 processor, 512mb of video ram, and a measly 500gb hard drive. The past couple of days I have come to the realization that I only use Adobe Programs for graphically intensive work (premiere, after effects, etc). I originally bought my iMac for final cut, but FCPX SUCKS and I switched to Premiere CS6 which works like a dream. Anyways, I'm a senior in high school and do lots of video editing (going to major in video production in college). I'm likely going to differ college for a year and continue my video production business (pretty informal) as well as video production internships at a couple companies (so don't suggest that I get a laptop for portability, not an issue). I just shot an entire wedding with 2 DSLR's and the footage takes up over 20% of my hard drive which is unacceptable. This is very troublesome for me and has been clogging up my computer considerably. I have realized it would make a lot of sense to sell my iMac and purchase a PC that's not only faster, but has much more space. I was ideally looking to sell my iMac for $1000, and from that get a better and faster PC setup for my video editing. $200 would be allocated for a 24" 1080p LED 5ms Asus monitor (from newegg) which would leave $800 remaining for the PC. Ideally it'd be nice to have a little cash left over. Some things that sound appealing to me are: an intel i7 quad core proccessor at least 3.0+ Ghz,  16 GB of ram (maybe 8 to start), 1 GB of video RAM (here is where I'm stuck, my Imac had a Radeon 512mb video card in it, but I've heard premiere runs especially well with nVidia CUDA cards? Don't really know too much about this stuff.) I have no idea what type of card to get, and if I would even see a performance upgrade from my iMac. For storage I'd like at least 2TB of space, should I get two seperate 1 TB drives? One for boot and software and another for video files? Anyways, I assume I can benefit from selling my 2011 i5 iMac to get a faster PC equivalent at a lower price since I mainly edit videos (which is pretty graphically intense) from an HD DSLR camera. I've noticed premiere rendering times on my mac are starting to get pretty slow these days. Ideally it'd be nice to buy a desktop (already assembled) maybe from HP for around $600 (not including the monitor). I'm not completely against building a PC from parts (since I know a friend who can do it for me) I just need help figuring out WHAT exactly it is that I need and would benefit from.

  • How to create a relative path for Flash video on a CDROM

Hello - I need to distribute a web site to a client on a
cross-platform Hybrid CDROM so that they can edit and make
adjustments. This website also includes 2 flash videos that need to
    be included on the CDROM.
My problem is this: I encoded the video in the Flash Encoder
app and brought them into the main Flash app for conversion into
swf files. I also used the media controller parameter to add a
control skin to the movies. I now have 2 swf files associated with
the flv video file, and I understand that all 3 of these must stay
together for the video to work properly. The video plays correctly
along with the controller skin on my Mac however only the
controller shows up but no video on the CDROM. I believe that this
has something to do with absolute vs. relative file paths for the
video flv file to the swf controller file.
I do not know how to change this path - I know "where" to
change it within the controller parameter options box but do not
know what syntax exactly to place here. How do you specify a
relative path here? When I try to do it I get an error saying that
the flv file cannot be found.
I am trying to use the following syntax: /video/welding.flv
where video is the name of the folder and welding is the name of
the file. I have done numerous Google searches on this subject and
stil cannot find an answer, so any help is appreciated.

OK - I assigned the FLVPlayback component the instance name
of videoPlayer to keep it simple. And I copied the above code into
an Actions - Frame on Frame 1. FYI - The name of the video has been
changed from welding to Timet Sponge.
