MLA formatting..

When writing papers in MLA format, there has to be a 1/2 inch margin between the header and top of the page. I know how to change that margin, but then there also needs to be 1 inch between the header and the text of the paper. How do I change the distance of the margin below the header to 1 inch? Right now its just one line above the text of the paper. Thanks!

Put six carriage returns in the header, or better, one carriage return, and adjust the line height (Format >Paragraph...)

When you +tried to hit Tab+ what happened?
Did the key move out of the way?

  • MLA Format Question

I've almost completed work on my template for MLA format in Pages 09.
I've done the auto-insert page number into the right-hand corner of each page.
However, I'm having trouble because I don't know how to insert my last name to the left of the auto-inserted page number in the top right corner of every page.
    So, instead of
1 in the right hand corner
    It would be
Last name 1 in the right hand corner
And so on and so on with every page thereafter.

Use the header or footer, anything you put in there will repeat on each page. You will find the header or footer is a fixed text box at the top and bottom of your page. If you move the mouse over them you will see their outline and can click inside them.
    Or go:
+Menu > View > Show Layout+ to see all the boxes on the page.
To do what you want: click in the header, type +*Last Name*+ followed by a space, then:
    +Menu > Insert > Page Number+
Each page will now have "+*Last Name*+ 1" etc. The number will be whatever the page number is. The rest stays the same.
see *Using Headers and Footers* p51 of the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf downloadable from under the Help menu.

  • How do i make a bibliography in MLA format?

Well, i got my macbook pro for school like 3 moths ago but i cant find a way to make a bibliography for a research project i have to do. I know how to do it on office but i only have iwork, and i hate office.

If you read in the PagesUserGuide on page 64 it says
+Adding Citations and Bibliographies Using EndNote+
+Pages works with EndNote X2, software that lets you search and manage references and create bibliographies. To take advantage of these features, you must have EndNote X2 installed, and you must have assigned, in Endnote X2, a default library to open when EndNote X2 is opened.+
You get the Guide by clicking on the name in the Pages Help menu.

  • Can one change the header so that it doesn't happen on every single  page?

I'm trying to write a report in MLA format. My header must include name, course, date, etc on page one. On every subsequent page all youre supposed to have is the page number, but the ENTIRE header is now at the start of every new page. if I delete it, the one on page one gets deleted too... I'm sure this is an ez fix, I just can't figure it out..please help

It would help to read page 58 of the PDF User Guide.
The chapter is entitled: _Changing Headers and Footers in a Section_
And of course, you may get the User Guide thru:

  • Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac

I have looked at both Pages 2008 and MS Word for my Mac trying to find a MLA format. In my English class, they showed us how to do it on MS Word for Windows, however the steps are nothing like for Mac.
Anyone here recently had to write a MLA format report and remember how you went about setting it up?
Obviously I'm hoping it includes a template like it does on Windows, I'd hate to have to set the margins and spacing for each page.

How to do it is here: http://word.mvps.org/mac/Using-Windows-Templates.html
Thought I'd post it incase someone else has this issue.
You seem to have a reading problem.

  • EMACS for word processing?

I've heard some stuff about EMACS being usable for word processing... How usable is it? Can it be made to do WYSIWYG editing of documents with headers, footers, and/or double-spaced text, in a format that MS Office will be able to read?
(If you must know, I have to deal with MLA format in an academic setting, and am not a huge fan of Abiword or OOo when it comes to actually writing stuff...)

[Edit: posted too slow, but some stuff near the end may be of interest...]
You could use emacs to create LaTeX source files. (See texlive for LaTeX packages for Arch.) Emacs has a number of extensions to aid with LaTeX document composition, the best known being AUCTeX. While it does have some preview features, AUCTeX by itself is not exactly WYSIWYG, though these days most LaTeX users generate PDF documents which shows them exactly what the output will be before printing.
The quality of LaTeX typesetting is much better than what you get by default with MS Office or Open Office or AbiWord. Once you have a LaTeX document, converting it to one of those formats feels like a downgrade. But if you needed to generate something that they can handle for the purposes of collaborating with a colleague, you could use tex4ht, which has scripts for converting to ODT or HTML. There are other conversion methods too.
I use vim for LaTeX composition personally, and almost never need to use a Word Processor.
I hate to invoke stereotypes, but most liberal arts profs don't know a lot about computers.
Well, I am a liberal arts (philosophy) prof... so infer from that what you will.

  • Automatic indentation

Does anyone know if, in pages, it is possible to automatically indent every line in a paragraph EXCEPT the first line? I'm writing an MLA-formatted works cited page, and this is the format, but using "tab" makes it vary depending on font size, etc.

That is called a Hanging Indent.

  • Exporting problems with pages

How come whenever I export a document, in this case an essay, it is exported and saved using text edit? This is a huge problem for me since text edit doesnt support MLA format. Please help

Are you using Pages or TextEdit?
Pages will export to .txt but only if you deliberately choose to do so.

  • How do I format headers for specific writing styles like MLA

I using pages for a MLA paper and I am trying to format the headers so it starts at page 3 and the pages are numbered with my last name in the however, it is not doing that.  Keeps repeating the name and same number.  How do I fix this?

    Hi c,
Insert a section break at the end of page 2, repalcing the page break if there is one there.
Click on Page 3. Open the Inspector, click the Layout button (second from left), then click the Section button.
    Make the changes shown:
Click Start at: and enter 3 in the box.
Uncheck "Use previous headers & footers.
The following assumes you want your name on the left and the page number at the right end of the header.
Click in the header on page 3.
Check that the first alignment button (left) is highlighted, and that there is a right tab stop at the right margin in the Ruler.
Type your name, then press the tab key, then type "p. " (including the space, but without the quotes)
    Go Insert > Page Number.
The top of your page should (if you have both Show Layout and Show Invisibles turned on) look like this:
On Page 2, delete any leftover content you had placed in the headers earlier.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Where can I find MLA/ALA formats for pages

My girlfriend wants to buy Office 08 because it has built-in templates for MLA/ALA. I told her with Pages 09 and Office '04 she should be able to find a template. Any ideas?

Simply open and convert the Word templates which you should be able to DL from Microsoft's site.
    Other places you can look:

  • Format before OR after writing the paper

Is it better to format your paper as you are writing or do it after you are finished? I'm writing papers for college that require either APA or MLA style - depending on the class - and I'm not sure if I should spend time before I start setting up the style or after I've written it.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Chip

I agree that this is a personal preference. With APA, however, you can always insert your cover page first, headers, and adjust your type styles before you begin writing. Then at least you'll have the basic formatting finished. Once completed with your paper, go back and make any necessary changes.

  • MLA/Pages Question

Hi, my school uses MLA as a primary format, and I was wondering if there is a way to place the heading at the top automatically. The box at the top of a blank page, i know it repeats what you type onto every page, but i need each page to have a different number. i.e., I need a heading at the top of each page that says "Smith #", "Smith 1" on page one, "Smith 2" on page two, ect.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks so much!

That box at the top is the header and if you put the cursor up there and choose *Page Number* from the Insert menu it will put the page number there - and the number will change with the pages.
If your instructor wants you to omit the header on the first page - many do including me - open the Inspector palette and click on the second icon along the top. This is the Layout inspector. Click on the little tab below labeled Section and near the bottom you'll see a checkmark box for First Page is Different. Click it. Set up your first page and then once you've begun typing on the second page, go up to the header and type in your name and insert the page number. The page # won't appear on the first page.
