Mobile Accounts

Hello,
I have a G5 Server running Leopard Server. Is there a way to setup a mobile account where on some Macs, it syncs the Home Folder, but on others, it just accesses the Folder and does not sync it?
Thanks

if you set mobility prefs at the machine (individual or group) level, yes.
if you've already set mobility prefs on users or groups, then no.
you'll have to do one or the other.

  • FileSync Failure On Mobile Account Home Directory

    Server
    Mac Mini Mid-2012, OS X 10.9.5, Server 3.1.2, OpenDirectory ON, HomeDirectory: /Volumes/HomeFolders/Users
    Client

    Network
Server exists on a foreign subnet. Client binds to OD Replica on local network. Authentication works without issue. SSH connections to Server work flawlessly. SCP can be used to move files across the network without issue.
    Situation
User account automatically creates a mobile profile on any system used. This is set in Workgroup Manager for all users of this User's type.
The local machine has successfully created a Mobile Account for the user, and User is able to use the machine without complication, except that User complains none of his personal files are present.
Home Sync reports last sync as being "Incomplete".
    Attempted Corrections
The log file had indicated that the synchronization process was being cancelled by the next synchronization which started automatically after 20 minutes. To correct this problem, I changed the HomeSync settings to start only on "Manual" requests.
After this change, I observed that the log file that a file was missing.  I ran SCP to duplicate the home folder on the local machine, replacing the home folder that had been already created.  I no longer find the missing file issue.
I found an article suggesting that deleting the .FileSync folder from the local and remote home folders would force the system to re-evaluate the status of the sync.  I deleted these folders in order to allow the system to recreate them.  The system continues to have Incomplete home sync processes.
    Help Required
I am unable to interpret the remaining EXCEPTION lines in the log file.  I appreciate any help deciphering the next steps in fixing the Home Sync process.  I appreciate any tips or advice on what causes Home Sync to fail in these situations, and if any person has information on how to create a local mirror that would be referenced for the HomeSync rather than the main server, that information would be greatly appreciated.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Mobile Accounts: Manual Sync works, Automated Sync Does Not

I've got a small office network with about 10 users. Each have mobile accounts under Tiger (server and clients) and they've been working flawlessly for years.
All of a sudden we've noticed that for some users the background sync is no longer working. If they choose "Sync Home Now" from the menu the sync runs else. Otherwise, it does not run at all.
All background syncing is set (via WGM) to run every 30 minutes.
What is the best way to debug this?
    Thanks!

if you configure mobile prefs to popup a dialog to confirm creating a mobile account on new machines, train them to choose "no," and they'll login with network homes on other machines.

  • Cannot login with mobile account when server is switched off

    Hello all,
First of all, my condolences to the Jobs family.
OK.  On with my problem.  I apologise in advance if this has been answered before.  I've trawlled through various boards and I can't seem to find an answer.
I'll try to keep it brief.
I've set up a mac mini with lion server.  Done all necessary updates.
I have a lion macbook which is the client.
On server, created an Open Directory etc..
I created 2 mobile network accounts on the server.  Set preferences etc..  Added both to workgroup.
Added the client to the domain in system prefs login options.
Logged into the 2 accounts on the client.  All working well.  Can see my mounts.  Mobile accounts created successfully and syncing working.
So, the problem I have is, when I shutdown the server, my mobile accounts on the client disappear.  Also, the login screen states, 'Network accounts are unavailable.'
I've been looking at this for a week now and it's driving me mad.  I must have missed something - can anyone shed any light on this please?
    With thanks, Paul.

oh well - gave up and reinstalled lion server.
    GROAN!

  • Decommissioned a file server, but every mobile account in the place is still trying to connect to it on login!

A couple of months ago we decommissioned the 10.4.11 xserve that was serving as our LDAP server and home directory server for mobile accounts.  We migrated all of that to a newer 10.6.8 xserve.  It was a fairly rough migration, but we've pretty much sorted it out except for one last annoyance: when you look at System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items for all of our mobile accounts, every single client is still trying to mount an afp share on the old server.  Logging in takes FOREVER because the connection needs to time out, so now my users are no longer logging out/in as often as they should, and so their Home Sync's are getting old.
When you go to the client's Preferences, the line referencing the old server share is still there, but the minus sign is greyed out so the item cannot be deleted.
The Kind is listed as "unknown" and there is a grey warning triangle next to it.
This is clearly some sort of template/Preference that is hardcoded to the old name, and whatever file this is got moved to the new server (which has a different name and different numeric IP address.)  Because even the BRAND NEW users that I have created since after "pdc04.hgbc.com" disappeared are trying to log in to the non-existent share on the non-existent server, too!
I have tried running grep on the entire disk on one of the clients looking for the string "pdc04", and updated everything that I found using vi directly on the files.  I have tried running grep on select directory trees on the new file server looking for pdc04.  In my grep on the client, I found the string in
         /Library/Managed Preferences/user/loginwindow.plist
         /Library/Managed Preferences/user/complete.plist
but searching all of the logingwindow.plist and complete.plist files on the new server comes up with nothing.
Does anyone have any idea where the template or preference or plist is on the server so that I can delete or update the file with the new host name?

I think that Grant is on the right track -- but the problem is that whatever file that pdc04's Server Manager wrote into is not available to pdc's Server Manager to edit or even display.
We upgraded mostly by turning off the G5 10.4 xserve and unplugging the fiber-channel RAID (with user accounts on it) and plugging the RAID into a fiber-channel card on the new (to us) Nehalem 10.6 xserve, which we did after using Migration Assistant between the machines.  Then we had various and sundry problems, and we ended up moving all of the mobile account directories to the internal RAID on the new server.
Clearly there is a file somewhere that acts as a template for mobile accounts and it refers to the old machine but its been moved to the new machine.
Only two of the mobile accounts have directories in the /Library/Managed Preferences folder.  One of them, ironically, is mine, and my account hasn't worked right since we went to the new server.

  • Deleted items reappear on mobile account with syncing?

On a mobile account with syncing, deleted items will reappear after syncing. One can manually do a full sync. Then delete stuff. Then do a full manual sync again and the deleted items are back.
This is on Leopard 10.5.6 client and Leopard 10.5.6 server.
Open to ideas one what I ought to look at.
    Best Wishes,
    Paul

    Paul,
I'm happy I'm not alone (sorry..)
I have exactly the same problem, although I'm using Linux server, not OSX.
It all worked nicely until 10.5.6 upgrade, after that I'm having lots of home sync problems, including:
    1. locally deleted items re-appear after sync
    2. a lot of sync conflicts, specially when sync cannot resolve latest file or directory version between mobile and network copy (and mobile copy will be always the latest one)
    3. huge syncs even if no data has been modified, ie:
I'm syncing all on login and logout, background sync is disabled.
I do login then straight away logout, so practically no data has been modified, but the sync may show me tens of GB being transferred.
Now, this is weird: I've done tests on a freshly created mobile account, with approx 50MB of data. Basically I've logged in and out repeatedly, sometimes modifying small files. Some of the syncs showed me transfer of 60MB!!! That's 10MB more than the size of the home directory!
I've looked through release notes for 10.5.6 and some sync issues were 'fixed'. I'm wondering if other ones were introduced...
As I've said, it all worked perfectly until the latest update - I have many machines behaving in the same, bad way.
    Perhaps someone has a solution?
    Thanks,
    Pawel

  • How can I create a mobile account in Mountain Lion?

    Dear All,
I have a problem creating a mobile account while joining an Active Directory domain controller (DC).
** Case one: While joining the DC, if these options are selected (Create mobile account at login) & (Force local home directory on startup disk), the home directory can not be created at all.
So, how can case one be solved?
** Case two: While joining the DC, if (Creat mobile account at login) is not selected, and (Force local home directory on startup disk) is selected, home directory can be creatded, but not as mobile account.
So, After creating the home directory, I can go to make it mobile account from Users & Groups/Active Directory user and choose mobile account.
after creating mobile account, the user loged out and then loged in back again. from here Mobile account botton is disabled and I can not manage it.
So, How can the bold underline part of case two be solved?
Note: Active directory used is Windows Server 2008.
    Regards,
    Abdelaal,

    What is a "fax dialog"?
This dialog, or something closely resembling it, is what you should see:
    Clicking Print sends the fax.
It is possible Acrobat is interfering with something, in which case you should get rid of it, unless you know of a reason to require it.

  • Mobile account with FileVault

We have a Leopard XServe 10.5.8 and a Client running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I have just instituted via WGM the policy to create a mobile account on login and to protect the home folder with FileVault. The error I am getting is "Unable to Create mobile account" "Your FileVault home can't be created because a folder with the same name already exists" What am I doing wrong? Is this not possible? Do I need to do it is phases?

Is the user name already in use locally? If so use a different user name on the server and then login and move documents from old local account to an external drive and then re-login to new account on server and copy documents over to new server account. You might have to run the chown command on the contents of the copied over documents: sudo chown -R user /networkuser/copiedfolder and then enter the local admin password. -R is for recursive so it will do it to all files within that folder.
Now a situation that I just ran into was I already had the network account which was a mobile account, but I wanted to promote it to have the File Vault added to it. Well I enabled it within WGM, but it did not apply the settings on the computer that I was logging into. So I logged into the admin account on the computer and deleted the network user in the system preferences users pane. Then logged out and re-logged back in as the new OD File Vault encrypted account it asked me to create local account and I did and it resynced all my files from the server back to the local computer. I am running 10.6.3 OD Server and 10.5.8 clients. Hope this helps.

  • Mobile Account Nightmares!

Ok so Mobile accounts looks to be the answer to everything. I am looking for an easy backup solution that will allow people to sync files over the network and also let them take their computers home while still being able to access that same account.
Well we have ran into a few problems... and if I cannot get them fixed we will be forced to try to find another solution.
One of these problems is that when the computer is off the network and connected to another network (like home or public wifi), the computer will literally take minutes to log in. It will just sit there after you type in your password. This is very inconvenient. Another problem is that when the computer is off the network the computer still tries to sync to the server. Why the **** would the computer keep trying to connect to the server when it is off the network!? This causes extreme slow downs and the user must manually cancel the sync.
Also I will ask this anyway, although I am pretty certain it is not possible, we want to only sync the computer to the network when they are on the local network. We have 5 sites that are all connected by t1s. Each site has a Mac OS X server that hosts their home folders. Some people travel from site to site, but we only want the computer to sync when they are at the site in which there home directory resides at. In otherwords we don't want them to sync over the T1. Is this at all possible?
    Thanks in advance!

OK, I might have improved this.
Just tried this on a 10.6.4 client bound to a 10.6.4 server and I get the same 120 second delay at login when connected to a guest network.
I have set home sync to be manual and reduced the timeouts.
    Time outs:
    Open/close times out in - 15 seconds
Query times out in - 15 seconds
    Re-bind attempted in - 15 seconds
Connection idles out in - 1 minutes
    Server side tracking is enabled.
Client is set to obtain everything from DHCP, producing a 120 second delay.
If I set the client to have a manual IP in the same range and don't set any DNS server, then login is instant, as soon as I set a DNS server I get the 120 second delay. DNS wildcarding ?
Adding an entry in the clients hosts file for the server and rebooting the client has reduced the delay to 20 seconds. I can live with that.
    /etc/hosts
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
<IP of my odmaster> <fully qualified name of my odmaster>
If I comment out the entry in the hosts file and reboot, I'm back to 120 second delay which is only reduced by uncommenting the entry.
Trying to login without any network connection is still instant.
    Cheers
    Gen

  • Using a mobile account on the server, external home directory

    Hi All,
    Running Server 4, Yosemite 10.10
I have setup a few mobile accounts via the server. These accounts have been given new home locations on an external thunderbolt HD. Everything is working as expected when connecting via an external MBA and MBP, login and sync work as expected:
However, when I try to use one of the network accounts on the actual server I come across sync issues, the Directory Util details used are:
    HomeDirectory:
    <home_dir><url>smb://imac.local/Users</url><path>Username</path></home_dir>
    NFSHomeDirectory:
    /Network/Servers/imac.local/Volumes/Server/Users/Username
Could someone explain the difference between these two, as it appears the first one comes into effect when I log into the server with the mobile account.
When i login with the account and select sync from the menubar icon I get get the following errors:
So, I can see from the errors what is happening, but have no idea how to fix..
    Setting for the Shared Folder:
Any ideas welcome, thanks in advance!

Is this a new requirement?  I have been using home sync (portable home directories) with NFS for several years.
However, my laptop has not been able to sync since it and the server have gone to Yosemite.

  • Mobile Account Error Setting Up Leopard Client, createmobileaccount error.

Hi all. I posted this discussion under Portable Home Directories, but that is unfortunately a subcategory of Max OS X Server v10.4 Tiger and this is strictly a Leopard issues, so I'm reposting here.
Just following up on an earlier thread regarding mobile home accounts. Thought I'd post a new entry as the other one has been "answered".
I've just recently upgraded a slew of clients and a server to Leopard and have been trying to enable mobile accounts on existing network home accounts. When I set this as a Preference using Workgroup Manager, nothing happens on the clients. When I try to create a mobile account directly on the client while logged in as the network user, I get a standard error (The mobile account could not be created.) every time after it asks to log out and enter the user password in order to create the mobile account.
So, I followed the steps in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1234051&tstart=0
For the account "leedale" logged in using a network home directory, entered the Terminal command as follows:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/ManagedClient.app/Contents/Resources/createmobileac count -vsn leedale -h /Users/leedale
    createmobileaccount built Oct 2 2007 22:44:49
    verbose output on.

    home path = "/Users/leedale"
    user password = "(null)"

    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
The namespace you are using for creating client proxy might not be available for consumption(i.e. it might not be published) or there is no connectivity to the source system so namespace is not available.
    Try checking connection.
    Hoping it helps..

  • Mobile account rules are still being ignored!

We've been running Tiger server for a couple years in combination with mobile accounts for some years now, mostly without significant problems. Since the introduction with Leopard it started giving problems: all rules in the WGM mobile account setup are ignored, it simply syncs the COMPLETE home folder of all Leopard clients. We are a 'music for picture' company, clients have large iTunes libraries and their /Movie folders are also pretty filled up, so data management became really problematic.
I figured that upgrading to Leopard server would solve this problem, so I bought a copy and started testing on a spare Mini Mac. And to my surprise the problem is still there! Syncing a mobile account from a Tiger client is fine, all rules are followed but with Leopard clients the problem still remains.
So what does a proper system administrator do? It starts collecting information from the internet and asks colleagues in the field what their experience is. It comes down (after a few days of research and testing) that I can't find the solution!
    My test system:
Mini Mac with Leopard server 10.5.6
Macbook with Leopard client 10.5.6 as a test machine
iMac with Tiger 10.4.11 as test machine
    - I create a user in WGM
    - I create a group in WGM and give it the proper preferences for syncing
    - I assign the user to the group
    - I make myself a cup of tea and take a deep breath
    - login as the new user and start testing
What I've tried so far to solve it:
    - turned around the 'what-to-sync': instead of syncing the home folder (~/) and make rules, I setup exactly what it should sync and no rules. Didn't work, still syncs complete home folder
    - delete sync prefs on client machine (/Library/Managed Preferences and .FileSync in home/network folder) restart and login again
    - instead of Full Path rules, I've tried to use 'Name' and others. Same problem.
    - went to WGM --> Group --> Preferences --> Details and added System/Library/CoreServices/ManagedClient. Edited the com.apple.homeSync so it should work. It didn't.
    - started all over again, didn't work.
It still syncs the complete home folder and does not listen to any rule whatsoever. Is there anyone that has any idea what can solve this? Where about to upgrade to a new server with Leopard and I need the mobile accounts for my clients.
    Thnx!
    Aux

I usually enable this on Computer Groups or the Guest Computer account rather than via workgroups. I don't know if that somehow makes a difference. May be worth switching to this to see if the problems miraculously go away.
Have you enabled the server-side tracking feature in Leopard Server?
You can run the following command for diagnostic purposes:
mcxquery -o <path to where you want it to go>/mcx_export.txt -format xml -user <username> -group <groupname>
You can look at that to see if the Server is doing its job of delivering the MCX correctly to the client for the user and group.

  • Mobile account issues...

Server and clients set up 2 years ago
    Clients are all Mobile accounts
set up to forcibly create a local home directory in Users folder on each mac whenever one logs in for first time, syncing with network Homes folder on server. mobility is configured at computer group level
As originally configured, I believe that login window displayed all personnel names as specified in Workgroup manager.
    1) Now it seems that on SOME macs, this behaviour continues , but on others, only those already having local accounts are displayed at login plus Other...Can't think why this has occurred.
    2) In addition to this, today I had to swap out a failing machine with one that was now spare but had been in use before.
This mac mini had the limited usernames in login menu. Those in this list can log in and sync with network home. Variations then ensued...
Randomly, two members of staff who used Other and enters Usernames and Passwords manually, we're recognised and logged in, but  a LOCAL account was not created for them...they were running from the Homes folder on the server
    3) In addition both myself and another colleague were completely locked out, we could enter credentials manually and our passwords were recognised ( "password will expire in  x days..." ) but then message popped up "xxxx xxxxxxxx could not be logged in at this time  An error has occurred"
    4) Intermittently  I get messages from staff who have "hot desked" at a site they infrequently visit. they login and are presented with a desktop displaying files that they deleted some time ago. On logging out (syncing at this point), they return to base to find that this Old desktop has now become their current desktop and  followed them back home. It's the intermittent nature that frustrates, it affects some staff on some satellite sites
Can anyone explain these behaviours, please? And advise on remedy?
(can see that in a large organisation, one would not want to scroll through entire staff listing to find Username like Warren Zevon, so can one force clients to display EITHER entire list of 40 staff members [OR only those who have logged in at this desktop and thus created a local account to sync with Network Homes folder])

Today I created a local account for myself, this allowed me to log in.
Not savvy enought to BIND to understand how to bind to OD. ..got lost in the 'forest'  window...
On deleting this local account, I found that I could now login, but this was as a Network Managed account rather than Mobile managed... The Home Folder was the one residing on the server...
How can I get mobile, managed account to be created on initial log in to the machine?
I believe I have added this replacement to the Computer group that manages the << create mobile account when user logs into network account>> mobility setting but it just doesn't 'take'

  • Mobile Account Creation and old topic

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1786733&tstart=1 -- This was never successfully answered and has been archived and marked as so?
The problem it turns out, is that Leopard doesn't seemingly like the AD user's home folder location. I've verified this still as an issue today, on 10.5.7. I tried to create a mobile account for a user on a new laptop i got -- it would prompt me for the password three times, saying it's incorrect each time before the account creation is canceled.
If in Server 03 AD tools you first switch that user's "Home Directory" to local (or a mac server), this issue will not persist. On the AD Binding/Directory utility un-check "Require Confirmation" before creating a mobile account.
Then you should be able to log out and login as the user (may have to first delete the user's local directory if one has been created under "Users"), so long as the Home folder is set in AD to a location that is seemingly 'agreeable' with the mac os.

The usual approach with Open Directory is to either use Workgroup Manager to define a managed login preference for a computer group to define that those member computers should cause the use of mobile accounts on those computers, or to do the same thing via Profile Manager.
Note: If you are using Mavericks you must use Profile Manager as it does not support this via Workgroup Manager managed preferences.
This will not require users to need admin authorisation.

  • Mobile Account Issue/Question

I have set up a Golden Triangle with Open Directory and Active Directory, everything is working fine. I can have users log into their Macs with their AD accounts, set up a mobile account so that their home directory syncs with an SMB share, but I've got a problem. If I sync the entire home directory, it's going to take up way too much space on the server, mostly due to Office 2011 email databases. It doesn't appear those can be moved out of the home directory, either. So is there any way to limit what is synced up to the server? Or, even better, is there some way to just set up one folder to sync so that the users can have their important docs uploaded to the server? I'm not seeing any way to do this, but I'm hoping that it's possible.

I've seen the error popping up, too, on a Mac running 10.8.1 connected to a server running 10.8.1 w/ OpenDirectory but no AD. I did this (in Terminal.app) I found that I had 3 kerberos-related plist files in /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/config/ which had not been updated for a while, so I deleted them to let OSX recreate them.
    $ sudo -i
    $ cd /private/var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/config/
    $ rm *.plist
    $ reboot
Haven't seen the error ever since. HTH. Regards,
    Christian

  • Mobile account creation has different result...

    Created managed preference group:
    - Finder: Show connected servers on Desktop
    - Mobility: Set to create Mobile account, synching off, HomeFolder on startup volume.
    - Login: Maps three SMB paths to Windows Server folders
    - Active Directory: UNC path set in user's Active Directory profile to Home Folder on Windows Server
There are two different conditions that give different results:
    (1) User logs on to a particular Mac once (using AD network account), prior to applying managed preferences. User is not member of preference group. Mac creates full set of User Account folders in user's home. Then user's name is applied to preference group, and user logs on.
    (2) User's name applied to preference group, prior to logging on to a particular Mac. User logs in using AD network account.
Results: With condition (1), User gets a full set of typical folders in local home folder, UNC network home folder is mapped to dock - the two Home folders (local and network) are kept separated, all works as anticipated.
With condition (2), user does not consistently get full set of folders in local home folder, UNC network home folder is mapped to dock - and local "Library/Preferences" and "Downloads" is copied into network home. Occasionally, user's AD account gets locked out due to too many failures while attempting to access folders.
I would greatly appreciate anyone who can lead me to understand this.
    Thank you...David

The usual approach with Open Directory is to either use Workgroup Manager to define a managed login preference for a computer group to define that those member computers should cause the use of mobile accounts on those computers, or to do the same thing via Profile Manager.
Note: If you are using Mavericks you must use Profile Manager as it does not support this via Workgroup Manager managed preferences.
This will not require users to need admin authorisation.
