Mobile Audio Voltage

I have an old Sound Feeder that I used in the car to play my CDs. Jacks into the lighter socket. It has three output selections: 3-4.5V, 6V and 9V. Will 9V work for the iPod?

You might want to be careful with your old cigarette lighter adapter. Although it works, the voltage may be off from the specs of the ipod. What I mean by this is, if the voltage is too high or too low, it may still work, but will slowly burn out the circuitry of your ipod

  • Mobile Audio Nightmare in Georgetown

I purchased my wife a new Cadillac DTS in February. During the first couple of weeks I started to build up her new system, using Crutchfields technicians.
We picked out a new DVD head unit, installation plastic kit, front door speakers (5 1/4), rear view camera, and steering control harness so that she'd maintain her steering controls. We live an hour away from the Georgetown TX Bestbuy, but I drive into town daily for work. Not having a lot of spare time, I elected to have them install the system.
I called the Georgetown location Wednesday March 5th to schedule the install. I was informed the next available date was Wednesday March 12th. So I agreed to this date, I informed the tech of my vehicle year make and model and told him I'd only need a wiring harness that goes from the factory harness to my new unit. I was told no problem, and he'd see me at 11am the next Wednesday. On Saturday the 8th, I received a call from him informing me that he could not find a wiring harness and that I'd have to go to Bestbuys website to order it. So, I did this, however, the harness did not arrive till Thursday the 13th. (Although I selected the 2nd day air option when ordering.)
On Thursday, when it arrived, I called the tech to see about getting the car done, I was then informed his next free day would be Wednesday the 19th at 11AM. No problem, I arrived Wednesday the 19th at 11am and dropped the vehicle off after signing some paperwork and showing the technician how I want the microphone mounted, and the rear view camera. I informed him of where in the car all of my audio stuff was located and left. Around 4pm, I started calling for an update and was told it would be ready at 5:45pm.
I was dropped off by my assistant at 6:15ish, and greated the tech. He informed me that the speakers I purchased could NOT be installed because the car called for 6x9s, not the 5 1/4s that Crutchfield told me I needed. I was also told that he would need another hour or so to work out the "kinks" with the camera and system wiring. Sooo...I wondered around Bestbuy for about two hours before he finally told me he was done. (My receipt shows I checked out at 8:30pm) I went with the technician to a cash registered and was charged for a "advanced indash video" install, "Steering control install" and "rear view camera" installation.  Total was $281.42 out the door. No big deal, as I assumed the work had been performed professionally and CORRECTLY.
After paying the man, we walked back to my vehicle and I got in to back out of the stall. Upon opening my door, the driver side door panel "reflector" fell off unto the ground. (He had removed the door panel to "Check" the speakers and realized he ran out of time and didn't check the acutal speakers he said) So, he put some double sided tape on the reflector since the tabs had broken and placed it back on the panel. When I put it in reverse, the camera did not come on, the tech was like "Oh yea, the wiring is good but the camera is not operating." I told him I'd buy a new one since it had already been 30days since my original purchase and I'd place it in the place of the one he had just installed and just use the plugs that he had ran. (Granted, I was charged $99 for the install and NOT told the camera was inop until I began backing out of the stall)
As I am driving home, I figured out how to pair my phone. Once I did this, I attempted to call my wife. She couldn't hear me, the microphone wasn't working.
So, Thursday, I called the technician at Bestbuy, informed him of the Mic issue, he told me the following Thursday, he'd fix that when installing the front speakers (since I had to order 6x9s).
Well, in the mean time, I recieved both my rear view camera and my new door speakers. I installed the camera like he showed me, plugged it in, NOTHING. Didn't work a bit.
Fast forward to Thursday March 27. We drop the car off with him, very unhappy. I informed him of the microphone, rear view camera, and showed him the new door speakers.  Roughly 5 hours later, we get a call that it's "ready". Upon picked up, we were told that he had actually wired the camera incorrectly, (so I wasted $60 on a new camera for nothing), he never plugged in the microphone (Although I paid $100 for a proffessional install) and he was going to charge us for 1" Speaker Spacers, because, the $150 6x9 speakers he had just told us to buy, were NOT correct for this car. The original 5 1/4" Speakers were CORRECT and he had to add the spacer to "Make it Work". So, another $30 charge for that.
We tested the microphone and camera before leaving, BOTH were working. As we were driving home (over an hour away) we turned the radio up a little, only to realize the front door speakers were NOT working. At this point, we're livid and I decided to go to Cadillac.
$250 later, I was told he wired the stereo speakers and steering control incorrectly.
On the 2nd of April I went to Bestbuy to find a manager. After explaining to him what happened, I was informed that the work was "Technically" performed, therefore I'd only receive a refund on the camera install. $99. I told him I was confused as to how he considers the work "Professionally" installed considering I had to spend $250 else where to get it done correctly, on top of the $30 speaker spacers, $150 speakers I didn't need and $60 dollar camera.
Needless to say, I'd like a Bestbuy representative to better explain this to me. As an Elite Plus member, myself, and my company spend quite a bit with Bestbuy every year. I don't feel we were treated professionally, and more importantly I was misled through out the whole process, which cost us way more than it should have.

    Dear Noles26,
That is certainly a lot of investments you’ve made in time and money in the last couple weeks! I’m sure that I would be just as disappointed in the experience I was given if I were in your shoes. I say with great sincerity that I wish we could go back in time and do it right the first time. We have a lot of pride in our Geek Squad services and our ability to offer car audio solutions is a huge reason to come to Best Buy. However, the experience you had was not a good example of what we are capable of.
When you initially called in to set up your install appointment, they should have checked stock for you before saying it wouldn’t be a problem. Whether or not they had the harness at that time, they should have offered to ring you out for it over the phone or have you order it on your own, to ensure that the harness would be there for you at the time of install because we can’t do unpaid holds. I realize that people sometimes have to rearrange their schedule to get stuff done on their car, and if we screw something up with that appointment, it can have a snowball effect on that customer.
Normally, before you leave the store, the installer should validate with you that everything is working and answer any questions you have about the new setup. Had this been done we might have prevented at least one of your trips. I can understand a rushed feeling to want to get the install done in a timely fashion for a customer whose appointment was already bumped back, but we shouldn’t lose sight of the possible repercussions to rushed work.
I will be reaching out to the leadership, at the Georgetown, TX store, to provide them with your feedback from your multiple visits. I will be sending you a private message to get some more details from your visits and some other details from your purchases. • Kenwood mobile audio and ipod

Is anyone else using the kenwood KCA-IP500 adapter with a video ipod and been able to play videos on a Kenwood car receiver with a dvd player/screen? Right now I'm using my nano on it and it works great, but I'm basing my buying a video ipod on whether this will work or not. I've tried hooking my friends' into my stereo and switched the TV out to on, but nothing. What I am trying to do is still be able to control the ipod through the touch screen stereo and be able to see video at the same time. I can play the audio portion of the video, but I'm not seeing the video part. Keep in mind this is in the car, attached to a video screen. I know I could just use the a/v kit attached to the stereo and control through the ipod, but I would like to control it through the stereo.
Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your specific question except to point you to this cable that has an iPod dock to RCA connection which includes one for video as well as audio: http://www.installer.com/item/display_item.php?it=pxp01
As a new owner of the Kenwood ip500 ipod adapter hooked up to a KDC-MP532U deck I do however have a couple of questions for you.
When using your ip500 can you navigate using your ipod?
I've owned the setup for 2 days now and was (strangely) only able to navigate with the ipod itself for a brief time period - the rest of the time I get a "Kenwood OK to disconnect" screen on the ipod. I am not happy about this as the Kenwood HU navigation menus are linear and very cumbersome to navigate.
Do you have a Kenwood HU with a USB pigtail?
If so, can you use your ipod via that USB interface?
I have one on my HU but cannot see the ipod. I also cannot see the on Sandisc Micro Cruiser 512MB flash drive (FAT 16 formatted) which according to Kenwood is a brand that they officially list as working.

  • Audio help for my 2001 Kia Sephia

    Hey all,
I'm a computer specialist, so when it comes to cars I'm an absolute novice. Long story short, my cars audio system sucks, and the guy who owned my car last did a great job of screwing the wireing up a lot, so I would not trust myself to install a new audio system. Yesterday I bought a Dual XHD7714 head unit, and now I'm looking at getting some new speakers. My car takes 5.25" front speakers and 5"x7" rear speakers. So right now here is what I'm looking at:
    Front: Alpine SPS-507
    Rear: Alpine SPS-500
Since I know pretty much zilch about car audio systems, I wanted to get your opinion before I bought any speakers. Basically my biggest worry is that the RMS power distribution won't work out correctly. But I don't know what I'm talking about anyways haha (^^,). Any advice as to some good quality speakers would be great, or any concerns about compatibility. Eventually I think I would like to put in an anmp and subwoofer, but I'm going to take this one step at a time.
    Thanks,
    -Sunflash M.
P.S. One more question, will Best Buy install the head unit and/or any speakers I purchase? And would it cost any extra money to get the head unit installed first, than add the speakers later on, as opposed to getting it all done at once?

    Hello SunflashMace,
About the best products to select, I would recommend consulting a mobile audio specialist at your local store.  They'll be able to provide you the best options to meet your needs and within your budget.
A schedule of installation fees can be found on GeekSquad.com, just click on the "Car & GPS" tab for additional information.  I hope this helps!

  • Satellite M40: USB Audio doesn't work properly in ACPI mode

    Hi all,
I just bought a Satellite M40 laptop which purpose will be to be used as a mobile audio system.
For that, USB audio devices are a great solution.
Unfortunately, although it was working properly while recording (sound is perfect with all USB Audio compliant devices I could test), there's an issue in Playback as I got lots of clicks and pops.
After lots of tryings and google searches, I fixed the problem by switching from ACPI computer to Standard PC mode.
    That's a workaround.
But this way, I don't know anymore what's my battery status, and my laptop do not shutdown automatically.
In fact, my laptop is no more managed as a laptop :(
I suspect a very serious issue in one of the Toshiba components management. Especially, I would not surprised to be told that power management leads to some regular short system freeze, and thus the 10ms USB audio buffers fall into underrun.
This would not bother me so much if I was not part of the technical support team of a company that is also launching some new USB audio products that will fail to work properly with laptops.
    My question is :
Is there any driver / bios update that gets rid of this issue ?
If someone from the Toshiba technical support wants to handle this issue directly with me, I would be pleased to help him, as I'm concerned professionnaly and personnaly.
    Thanks in advance.
    [Edited by: admin]

    Thanks for your help Jeffrey,
    But
    - I checked with several USB audio devices, from different providers. The issue is the same.
    - I checked with several applications (Winamp, MediaPlayer, ...). Same issue.
    - I checked these devices with different laptops (tried 3 different models) : I have NO PROBLEM.
    - The USB devices I use do not need external power supply. I tried EDIROL UA-25 which works perfectly in any case, but not with my TOSHIBA M40.
    - I agree that some application can disturb audio management. But in that case, I would like to know which one from the standard installation is the cause, so that I can fire it. It's anyway curious to see that switching from ACPI to Standard mode fixes the issue, as all applications are still there. I would say the applications are not the issue, then.
    - All Microsoft updates have already been installed
    - I think I tried everything that could be done by closing applications, changing power management modes, system cache, ...
    - I have no other hardware device connected/installed (printer or whatever)
    - RECORD works perfectly. So if some application layer was disturbing, I would bet it would bother in Play and Record as well.
CONCLUSION : Unless someone can prove it (and I'm ready for some testing), I still believe there's a harware/driver layer that is faulty in the Toshiba management.
And I don't need to contact the manufacturer, as I AM one of them :)
If you are part of the Toshiba support, let me know. Maybe we can investigate together.
FYI : I had to create a new user ID for this forum as it did not accept the one I created this morning anymore :(
    Thanks anyway.

  • Questions on handheld GPS systems

Hello!  My sister and I are preparing to go to the Uk in two weeks, I know next to nothing about the GPS handheld system, but the following is what I would like to have, if it’s possible, or at least help in determining what the best product is. (also, which is the best board topic for me to post this under?, I didn't see a GPS option to choose from)
I primarily want something that will when we are walking around London, and other English cities to help us find the places we want to go to specifically. Also, the nearest tube station, or restaurant, or if we could just type in “Westminster Abbey” and have the GPS talk to us on how to get us there and to show us specific street maps. So my question is, does something like this exist? What is the best one to buy? Do I have to buy additional download maps, or can I just buy one thing with everything on it? Other things that would be great to have, but probably not possible are:
Does the GPS have internet access? Can I check email and other websites with it?
The handheld GPS, can I use it in the car here in the US when I’m done with my UK traveling?
Will the GPS actually “talk” to me, or have written directions, or both?
My understanding is that it can use 2AA batteries, so I won’t need to charge it, correct?
The website says that battery life is 16 hours, but other things I’m reading implies it is less?
With the above information, is the Garmin Oregon 450 or the Garmin Oregon 450t better? Is there a cheaper option that will accomplish what I need? I don’t really care about geocaching etc, I just want something to help me not get lost. :-) And ideally use in the car when I get back to the US, but even that’s not a big deal.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Best Buy's Vehicle Fit guide question

I want to install a car stereo in my 2007 ford explorer 4 door, heres the stereo I want to install,
                                                                                http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9197111&type=product&id=1218056226183
It said it would fit, then I checked again a while later, and it said it doesn't fit, I don't get this, I heard their fit guide is very inaccurate, does it fit?  I hope so, any help would be great.  I actually ordered it off another site  for 185 dollars, much cheaper than what best buy wanted, and this is just the stereo, instalation is another 90 bucks I believe.
Just to mention one thing, best buy wouldn't let me post the message because it said "The message body contains ______, which is not permitted in this community. Please remove this content before sending your post."  Weird.  I can't type the word out, it won't let me post if I do, but a hint, its the name of a rain forest in brazil.

    Hello alex145,
While we do our best to provide accurate information about which mobile audio equipment will fit in your vehicle, occasionally the information can be conflictory as you discovered.  When this occurs, it's best to consult the manufacturer -- Pioneer in this case -- for their recommendations.  Their response would be definitive.  I hope this helps.

  • MBP 15" (late 2008) new Hard drive issues in 10.6.8 but not in 10.8.5

I have a 15" Macbook Pro (Late 2008) with an up to date EFI firmware (ver 2.8).
When I went to replace the hard drive (Hitachi 320GB hard wired at 1.5Gb/s) with a new hard drive (Seagate 1TB SSHD).
This new HD runs at 3gb/s or 6gb/s and my MBP which will only do 3GB/s (link speed) DOES select this speed.
Now I've read over 1000 posts (no, really) about this topic of SATA drives in older MBP's but problem is a bit more nuanced.
I partitioned the new HD as follows (disk1-250GB, disk2-250GB, disk3-500GB).  I have to do this because I run two versions of OSX.
I run OSX 10.6.8 for mobile audio recording and some post-production video editing and my software runs GREAT in Snow leopard.
Of course, there are some good reasons to have a newer OSX and so I put 10.8.5 on disk2.
On my old HD I had two partitions (disk1-150GB, disk2-170GB) and then used disk utility to copy the old drive to the new.
Here's where my problem is more nuanced.  The new drive works AWESOME when running 10.8.5 at 3GB/s.
In 10.6.8, however, I get pinwheels, beachballs, hiccups, etc when running the hard drive at 3Gb/s.
I'll play an aif audio file in Quicktime player and it will stop producing audio, BUT it keeps track of the time.  I swap back in my old HD and everything runs fine.
I'm planning in getting a different drive (one that works at 1.5 and 3.0GB/s) but I'd like to keep this drive as it boots up 10.8.5 FAST!  In about 15 secs or so.  OR, I could just swap out hard drives when I need to use 10.6.8 (which is really easy on my MBP but not preferable) and dedicate the old one for 10.6.8 only.
    QUESTION:::::
Does anyone have any idea why the same physical HD would work fine in 10.8.5 but have constant (every 15-20secs) read/write errors in 10.6.8??
The fact that it works great in 10.8.5 has me a bit puzzled of whether or not there's an inherent hardware incompatibility.
Sorry for the long post, just trying to give as much info as possible.

    Melophage-
I did try booting from the external SATA enclosure and all was fine; no hiccups.  I used disk utility to restore my Snow Leopard partition to a newly purchased HD; a Western Digital 1TB(Mainstream) drive that operates at 1.5 or 3.0 GB/s.  I noticed it's power requirement is about 3/4 of the factory drive which is also good.
Amazingly this drive actually works with a link speed of 3GB/s with 10.6.8.  And no pinwheels/beachballs.
    Possible Conclusions:
My MBP SATA onboard controller is OK with a HD that's 1.5/3.0 GB/s but NOT quite OK with 3.0/6.0GB/s.  Although both drives had a link speed of 3.0Gb/s, only the newly purchased "slower" drive worked flawlessly.  I'm fine with this being that my Apple factory drive was hard wired at 1.5Gb/sec and its speed was adequate for the audio/video recording I do in 10.6.8.  Hopefully it works fine with 10.8.5.  Still restoring that partition to the Western Digital drive.
In the end, I have a HD with over 3X the capacity as before and a link speed of 3GB/s.
I may not have the 15sec boot-up time as I did with the hybrid drive, but I won't miss it.

  • Anyone know about installing a deck for 2004 Monte Carlo SS?

Like i said i have a 2004 Monte SS with the OnStar bullshyt. I dont really think thats the problem. The problem is that a lot of the "chimes" like when the door is open or key in the ignition, those are all tied to the audio speakers. This is all just from what ive read. From the research ive done it sounds like a royal PITA to simply put a deck in. The factory system sucks (dont they all?) and id really like to get something decent to simply play CD's. What am i looking at to get a deck installed? Is this something BB could do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mainstage 2 - MUCH worse CPU usage!

On my MBP, the same settings same project was hovering around 75% cpu with Mainstage 1, now Mainstage 2 is MAXED. Had to lower sample rate AND increase buffer to make it useable. This is unacceptable! Have noticed a few bugs fixed, and some great features added, but at a performance hit? No thanks. Using 2 firepods as aggregate device.
Anybody else experiencing higher CPU usage on the same projects?

Yelling might not help, but it sure can't hurt. Just got my Logic Studio 9 and I am finding the same thing. Mainstage 2 starts at 110 CPU... I thought it might be my Guitar Rig Mobile audio interface, so I switched to built-in input - no difference.
I am running Snow Leopard (dev program) - I thought that might be it, until I saw this thread - seems to be happening on 10.5 too.
Apple has really been doing a good Microsoft impersonation lately. Crappy first impression on what would otherwise be a very impressive software package - if they hadn't shipped it before it was fully baked. I know these issues will get resolved eventually - but yeesh. I paid $600 for the package largely for Mainstage, and the thing is buggy and unusable. Audio cut outs, screen freezes, graphics glitches.
Ironically, Guitar Rig 3 works flawlessly on Snow Leopard. Maybe Apple devs need some help from NI.

  • Mail & Safari Troubles

    Hi all
i started my macbook today and it was relatively slow to start. When i fired up safari i was asked for a keychain password (a request i have never seen before). as far as i know i don't have a keychain password so i pressed cancel. again the same password window popped up so i tried my mail login password to no avail, so i pressed cancel to see the password window close and not return.
i then started up Mail to be presented with the Mail setup window, so i cancelled and rertried. i was again presented with the Mail setup window,so i went through the process of setting up my email account. after setting up i sent an email to my college email account and logged in to the college server and found the email i had sent. i then sent an email from my college account to my home account (the email account i had sent from my macbook) but so far i haven't recieved it. if i check my email through my service provider web site the email from my college account to my home account is shown but is not getting through to my macbook.
as far as safari is concerned every 10 mins or so the keychain password window pops up but pressing cancel on the 1st window presents the same window a 2nd time then cancel the second window get rid of it for approx 10mins then the keychain password window appears again. also all bookmarks and history has vanished from safari.
there are other problems, the primary use of my macbook is mobile audio recording using pro tools for that purpose. the pro tools icon sat in the dock but has now vanished from there. pro tools is still on my macbook but is no longer represented in the dock.
The macbook in question is no more than 6 weeks old and email and internet accounts have been setup and fully operational since i bought it 6 weeks ago.
    all help greatly appreciated

  • What is the firewire chipset in the current Mac minis?

I am considering purchasing a Mac mini for mobile audio use.
Many audio interfaces are picky about FireWire chipsets.
Can anyone confirm what exact FireWire chipset they are shipping with?
I'm particularly interested in the Mac mini with the 2.6GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7.

    The iFixit teardown
    http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Mac+Mini+Late+2012+Teardown/11262/2
lists several chips but does not list any functions for some.
    It appear that
    LSI L-FW643E-2
    is the FW chip
    http://www.lsi.com/downloads/Public/1394%20Products/FW643E/LSI-PB_2pg_FW643E_fn. pdf
    It includes:
The LSI FW643E is a second-
    generation 1394b Open Host
    Controller Interface (OHCI)
