Modeling voltage regulator loss in Multisim

Hi.. I'm trying to model voltage regulator efficiency loss in Multisim.. I have a system with cascaded switching regulators and loads.
I have VR efficiency curves for all the regulators..  (ie spreadsheet of efficiency at different loads measured from lab data)
I'm trying to get overall system power using static loads.. I originally thought I could use ABM current sources inside of a sub circuit, using if statements (if output current >1 A, add 10% to input, if output current >2A, add 8% to input, etc.. but it looks like there is a problem with using ABM sources inside a sub circuit (according to some other threads)... I really need to be able to easily copy the regulators and make changes to the efficiency curves so just putting all of this in the main circuit seems prone to errors.
Does anyone have a good idea for how to do this? I've been using excel in the past but the spreadsheet has gotten really complicated.

Hi Mike,
You are right, ABM sources and other SPICE mechanisms which rely on absolute node names don't work well in Subcircuits or Hierarchical Blocks. However, you can create a stepwise load response by using cascading a bunch of switches and current sources. Attached are two files. vreg.ms10 is a 12V source that has 10% efficiency at 1A and 18% efficiency at 2A. testbench.ms10 is a file which demonstrates the performance characteristics of the voltage regulator. Open the testbench and click  Simulate>>Analysis>>Transient Analysis. The Multisim grapher will open and plot the input current and the load current and you should see the desired efficiency degradation. If you want to model more complex behaviour, you can add other nonlinear sources and components to the Hierarchical Block model the behaviour of your regulator.
There's no limit to what you can model with a bit of creativity in Multisim. Hope that helps.

    You should check the manufacturer website to see if they have a SPICE model available for download. If they do, you can follow component creation tutorial to create a new part.

  • Help : power supply- voltage regulator

    Thank you for all those that have replied me towards this power supply.  In particular Lacy and Kittmaster.
    I have developed a basic voltage regulator . However, I want to get a power supply that can deliver like 60V, and take about 10A current, because that what the load will require.
    The regulator I have developed only delivers about 20V, I use the formula Vo = (R2/R3 + 1) * Vref. where my Vref is now 10V ( 2 zener diode). Even when I tried to decrease the resistance of R3, it does not make a difference.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    O.K. I believe I have got it. There was a 2 fold problem with your regualtor and I will outline them below.
    1) For some reason I could not get the 3-terminal Virtual Op Amps to work in this circuit. I traded that out for the 5 Terminal one. It is the very last one in the list of the Virtual category.
    2) You are comparing your voltage from the bridge to your output voltage. If you have your input referenced to 10V and your output dviding this by a factor of 2 then once the voltage at the divider junction reaches 10V then the op amp will stop driving the transistor. Therefore you are only going to get 20V Out (ref*2 since both resitors are equal in value)). Therefore, you have to have your input reference to what you want the output to be. In this case 60V is what you want so you have 30V at the divider junction (Vo/2 since both resitors are equal value) your input reference would have to be 30V. I have never heard of a 30V Zener (they may exist, but it seems to me tha they would have to be quite large). so you may have to use a voltage divider on the input side instead.
    It is my opinion that the design of this regulator is not going to work for you in reality if you decide to build it. The 2N2904 I I know is not going to handle 10A in reality. Based upon my findings I don't even know if you are going to be able to use an op-amp as the error amp due to the amount of voltage that has to be tied into it.You may be able to find such an op-amp but you will have to do some research to find one. I think most of the op amps in Multisim are low voltage in the range of 5VDC-22VDC. I would suggest looking  on the internet and see if I could find a better alternative that uses more robust components or if you definitely want to design this on your own, reasearching the components in Multisim to see if any of them can handle the voltage and current requirements.

  • Voltage Regulator problem !

    Last month I had blown up my MSI 790FX GD70 by increasing "CPU VDD Voltage" to 1.45volts
    I found this review http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1004/6/  relating to my problem bcoz they killed GD70 too by overvoltaging vCore.
    According to them some first launched GD70s had buggy MOSFET/Voltage Regulator (9A2S292) which were not able to live at 1.45v. Unfortunately I bought one of them. My dead mobo had same MOSFET (9A2S292).
    And then they successfully overclocked another new GD70 with new MOSFET (xxxx298) http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1103/1/
    I got my dead mobo RMAed now
    I have new mobo, new MOSFET
    But this one has a different MOSFET (xxxx294)
    I only wanna know if this one is strong enough to take voltage upto 1.45v or more ? Because I've read in many people are ok with 1.45v with this board.
    I am stuck at 4.1GHz at 1.435v and I am also very afraid of increasing voltage more than this.

  • MSI P6N SLI Platinum Voltage regulator cooler size question

    I have a question about MSI P6N SLI Platinum's Voltage regulator cooler. Is it the same size of K9N SLI Platinum? The reason I ask is I plan to use water cooling on it. But the only regulator  waterblock I can find is desgined for K9N SLI Platinum from aqua computer http://www.aqua-pcs.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=218. So can I use this one on P6N SLI?

    I guess not... P6N is much thinner, if your K9N VR cooler is as thin, then it can fit in. But I guess not.

  • K7N2-L & BSOD, D3D crashes, 2Dartifacts, poor cpu voltage regulation.

    Problems: :O
    2d tolerable but instable.  Sysmon shows page faults, rising rapidly when programs are opened. DxDiag - crashes during d3d test most of the time.  Quake3 gets to 2 seconds into the ID title before hanging.
    Occasional 2D artifacts, system tray goes black and some colours reurn when you run the mouse over them.
    Occasional series of small green vertical lines in the top portion of the screen on some crashes.  IE works for a while and then crashes (windows closes it).
    Setup:
    Athlon TBird 1.4 (266fsb)
    Enermax 350W PSU (185w 5.5v + 3.3v)
    IBM 180GXP
    IBM 75 GXP
    Hitachi 8X DVD
    1x case fan
    1x cpu fan
    LAN enabled (*functioning)
    AC '97 (cannot get to work - I'll do this when the board is stable)
    Geforce 2 GTS (4xagp - 8x disabled in bios)
    Floppy drive
    Generic PC2700 ddr (tested fine)
    Win '98 frsh install
    Latest BIOS + Drivers
    All components except the mobo previously worked fine in on an ecs k7s5a with a LAN & soundcard.
    Diagnostics:
    sysmon errors (page fault - more or less continuos)
    sisoft memory benchmark succsessful
    sisoft cpu benchmark succsessful
    sisoft multimedia benchmark succsessful
    CPU voltage regualtion is RAGGED but within tolerances - 1.72-1.82v
    3.3v +/- .1v
    5.0v and 12V feeds are fine.
    CPU temp reads 58-59 C
    Lowering FSB on processor and RAM lowers stability -default clock fine.
    Raising AGP voltage by +.1 aids stability.
    Lowering Graphics card
    core speed and memory speed helps a little.
    Disabling fast-write helps a little.
    Graphics card seating checked
    All cables checked
    Checked with another PSU
    No obvious shorting.
    Empirical:
    Poor CPU voltage regulation - duff board
    Poor AGP GART drivers
    Poor Nvidia drivers
    Please dont say change my PSU - its within its tolerance.

    Ive got a 4 sats + sub creative stuff and a mic.
    The mic is in the mic,  and ive got a lead in mic in and one in mic out.

    I still have problems loading windows and am getting repeated CONFIGMG windows protection error.  I'm not too fussed about that because once its up and running, it runs like a dream.
    Q.Any ideas as to why my 3dfx is so comparitively slow? (Yes I know I should go out and get a Radeon 9700 pro gti turbo ultra gold.........)

    But sadly it didn't work for me...
    Its interesting that ECS got SLATED over this configmg error and some bright spark soldered a resistor onto his board which seemed to work.  It was put down to a SiS chipset needing to be at a certain temperature - i used this fix and it worked.
    Could it be that a conventional system fan could be placed hear the nvidea heatsink to solve this problem?  As configmg errors can be motherboard related, could this explain poor memory compliance?  Could this explain its refusal to home my little geforce2 gts...?
    And the answer is YES.  The chipset cooler is inadequate. 8o

    I used a standard 80mm case fan and modified it using a 2l plastic coke bottle so as to channel the air onto the heatsink without damaging it.  Previously it was difficult to get windows to load.  Now it has succsesfully loaded 10 times.
    **I am now using the default memory timings without a problem - thats 6,3,3 Cas2.5**
    Bear in mind that I tried these timings with my matroxg450 previously, and it resulted in crashes.
    Now for the final test... I shall trawl out my geforce2 GTS - source of all my initial troubles with this board - could it be that the performance of this board was straining the chipset when it wasn't properly cooled, or is it still a device driver issue?
    Well, during instillation of the drivers I got 2 VxD BSODS.  I tried 20.xx 30.xx and 40.xx which all failed to produce an image using directx 8.1.  Guess this board just doesn't like the card.

  • Noobie problem with voltage regulator simulation

    Try putting a load resistor from each output to ground.  Depending on the construction of the model for the regulator, it is possible that it needs a minimum load.

    Thanks Lynn I tried that with a 1k load and that resulted in an output voltage of -5.3V, which is still completely unsatisfactory from a simulation package. 
    I swapped the LM7905 for another -5V regulator, the UPC7905, which gave the correct output but failed after a few seconds.  The convergence assistant suggest to switch the integration to the Gear algorithm, which resulted in a stable and correct output. 
    So I went back to the LM7905 but that still resulted in the incorrect output.
    So Multisim cannot simulate the output of a garden variety, ultra common, component like the LM7905.  This is unacceptable.
    Perhaps changes to other options in the "Custom Analysis Options" dialog will improve the convergence.  If anyone has suggestions I would be most gratefull.

  • I am traveling to Spain and have a plug adaptor for my I phone 5.  My power cord says it accepts 220 voltage, do I need to buy a voltage regulator or can I just use my regular power cord

    I am travelling to Spain and purchased the plug which allows me to plug in my charging cable.  Since the voltage there is 220 do I need a voltage converter.  The tech at Radio Shack said no because the iphone plug lists the voltage as 100 to  220.

    All genuine Apple power packs are multi voltage
    100-240v 50/60hz and will work anywhere so no you just need the pin converter

    You may only need adapters for the different kind of sockets, depending of the country you want to travel. A voltage converter is not needed.
    The Apple power units are multi voltage devices, supporting a range from 110 V to 240 V. as you can see on the labels. O.K. for most of the labels you need a magnifier, but its on them.

  • Could someone please help me model the following circuit in Multisim?

    I have connected a BNC tee adapter to an oscilloscope. At one of the ends of the tee connector I have placed a 50 ohm terminator. At the other end of the tee I have placed a pulse generator with the following specs: a pulse amplitude of -0.8 V (for resistive loads of 50 ohms to 10 kilo ohms) that is 6-10 ns in duration with a 10 kHz repetition rate. The pulse generator also has a risetime of 1.5 ns and a fall time of 5 ns. Thank You

    Here are some ideas to model this circuit. For the BNC terminator you could simply use a 50 ohm resistor; for the pulse generator I recommend you to take a look of the SIGNAL_VOLTAGE_SOURCES Family, Sources Group in the Multsim Master Database. The PULSE_VOLTAGE source could be an option since it allows you to configure many parameters (rise/fall time, pulse width, period, etc).
    Are you building a circuit to take a specific measurement (for instance: Time Domain Reflectrometry)?

    The SPICE model for the ISO124 is not available by the manufacturer. You can try contacting them and make a request for the model, sometimes they provide it upon a customer request.

  • DATA MODELER 3.0 -Loss of the fields in my file DMD - Where are the fields?

    I have a serious problem with version 3.0. After working to create a relational design I saved the project. Then I moved to another folder, e tried to re-open the. Dmd, and to my surprise, I lost all fields, PK, FK and indexes.
    I tried to import the DMD, and the import, displays the correct fields, select them, and when I import, again not the fields appear.
    Can someone tell me what the problem, and if you can solve?
