Months of backup - gone...

I have been using Time Machine for several months. When I opened it, I could see several months of backups. Today, each of my hourly backups began to fail. I opened Time Machine and the ONLY backup is from this morning. All others are gone. Occasionally I have gotten a message that it needs to delete an old backup to make space, but this would be a date a month in the past. I have done nothing to my system, not added significant new docs. The message I'm getting for my hourly backup is that it needs 130GB for a backup and I only have 22 GB available. Both my internal and external are 250GM with 32 GB and 22GB of space available.
Any thoughts on what's going on?

First, both of your drives are a bit "tight" on space. Recommended is 15% free.
Your TM drive should be 2 to 3 times larger than your internal drive.
I think the problem is that there are no single old backups to delete to make room for some new and large backups it is looking to archive. If it needs 130 GB, clearly the TM drive is much too small. If the TM drive has to erase 130 GB of data, that might include the basic, original system from which all other backups stem, and that cannot be done.

  • TM just deleted 2 month of backups, without asking!

    Hi,
I just installed a new hard disk into my macbook. I cloned my old one with CCC, but gave it another name.
so after everything was working i thought it would be a good idea to make a TM backup. after 3 hours of "preparing" I wanted to know what's happening. I do TM backups normally only a few times a month, and then over night.
So what I found out. TM deleted 2 month of backups, the oldest 2 month! I cancelled the whole process and checked the folders on the backup disk and the preference settings. The settings of TM have the "warn before delete" function which is activated.
so next idea was to rename the disk to the old name. So I did it, started TM again and.... another day of backups was gone.
What the heck is going on there? I mean why doesn't TM ask me or even warn me? It shows me the correct dates for the last and the first backup. But neither does it combined the last two backups (from the same day) nor it warns me.
Good for me that I don't rely on TM and do a DVD backup more often.

I suspect that your backup schedule causes TM to create large backups rather than small incremental ones. TM is best when used all the time. Mine typically takes a minute or so ever hour.
If you only want backups once a month or so, CCC or SuperDuper is far better.
Why TM did not warn you, I don't know, but perhaps it's because you don't have it on all the time.
I have been using TM since November last year and my 500 GB TM drive is less than 1/2 full.
If you have many large files, you should back them up separately, because if you "touch" one, TM will consider it "new" and back it up all over again.
TM is good, SuperDuper is good, and relying on a single backup plan is good, but having a plan "B" is better.
I have read that TM does not always warn the user before deleting old data. It might be a bug, it might be that the warning is not obvious and is easily overlooked. It might also be related to your only using TM once a month. I check my TM disk occasionally to be sure nothing odd is happening. It's only a computer - it's not perfect.

  • Can't get more than one month of backups with Time Machine

I seem to be having persistent problems with TM. I have a 1TB HD and in the past I have been able to get up to several months of backups from around 140GB with exclusions. However, lately I seem to be plagued with "SystemFlipper" messages that start a full backup and result in the removal of previous backup such that I seem unable get have more than just over one month of backups.  This seem to occur mostly at the first backup of each day and then works fine for each subsequent hour after doing the "Full Reset" as per Pondini (http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html). Other days it seems to work fine.
I have been reviewing other related discussion in this forum and cannot seem to find an answer. It is possibly to do with residual pre-Intel programmes is the best I can determine, but the problem is how to find the culprits in my list of applications either remove them all together or transfer them to another HD I use for non-essential data and files. I have done this for a lot of other data and have added exclusions for some file that were giving me identified issues.
Would appreciate any suggestions as I'm getting a little frustrated at having to do a reset so often, and  not being able have a greater time period of backups given that there was a time when I had nearly a year's worth.
    Thanks, Dave

See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the ''Safe mode'' start window.

  • TM was keeping 5 months of backups, now only 2 weeks, why?

New OS 10.5.7 iMac running Time Machine since January 2009. Seemed fine and kept about 5 months of backups. Over the last 3 or 4 weeks, it is running out of space more frequently. Now I can only look back over the last 2 weeks! Why isn't it keeping as many backups as it used to?
    Help!

Parallels, Entourage, and Thunderbird are not used on this Mac and the only change to the backup data are new documents. Nothing unusual.
Those aren't the only ones, just a few common ones. Once you get your backups working again, you may find something else that's similar, causing big backups.
We downloaded TimeTracker and it showed nothing backed up because TM didn't back up anything yesterday or today. The error message says not enough space! The external drive is 160G and on the Mac we are only using 112G of space for everything (including Applications etc.)
That's a clue. Apparently something unusual happened recently, causing TM to want to do a new, full backup. The most common are certain hardware repairs (such as a new Logic board or internal HD), doing a full restore, or going many days without a backup.
Since your TM drive is less than twice the amount used on your internal HD, and since TM won't delete the most recent backup, it just doesn't have room, and fails.
That's why we recommend that TM have 2-3 time the space of what it's backing-up. That varies, of course, depending on how you use your Mac. It will work with less, in most cases, but may not be able to keep your backups for very long, and won't be able to deal with unusual situations.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget.
It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window.
You can copy these messages by selecting them via dragging your mouse over them (be sure to get them all, as they may overflow the small window), then pressing CMD-C. This copies them to your "clipboard," so you can post them here (via CMD-V). (Occasionally, the widget won't let you copy while a backup is running.)
Note that the widget may only let you look back a few days. If you need to look back farther, you'll need the Console app (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to look at your older system logs (named +system.log.1.bz2, system.log.2.bz2,+ etc). Click +Show Log List+ in the toolbar, then navigate to the desired logs in the sidebar that opens up.
What you're looking for, if the widget or logs go back far enough, is a backup that shows deleting a lot of old backups. TM normally "thins" some, but this will likely be a whole lot of them.
However it happened, your only options now are to get a bigger drive/partition for TM, or erase the drive with Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) and let TM start over with a new, full backup.
Then monitor with the widget and/or +Time Tracker+ to see if anything unusual is happening.

  • Time Machine - all backups gone, backups fail

I've been backing up with time machine for 10 months via direct USB connection. I've recently been receiving a string of Time Machine error messages including "Error completing backup, an error occurred while creating backup folder" and "backup disk not available." When I clicked "enter time machine" all of my backups were GONE. Nothing there but "now".
I repaired disks, verified disks, unplugged and rebooted, all several times. After unmounting then repairing the external hard drive, TM was able to complete one backup but the problem came back within a day. All the old backups have disappeared completely.
    Ideas?

That sounds like a problem with your external HD. All those messages indicate a problem writing to it.
When you say you've verified and repaired disks, does that include both your internal HD and your TM drive? If not, do both just to be sure. Then, before attempting another backup, try the Browse option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If your backups are there, and not corrupted, that should show them.
Also check all connections to the external. Use different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may make intermittent contact in another).
If the drive has it's own power supply, check those connections as well.
Restart your Mac, if you haven't during all this.
Check with the maker for firmware updates.
How old is the drive? Is it still covered by warranty?

  • 1,000 Photos Disappear, 18 months of Backups don't help

After updating to iLife '09 (8.02) from '08 and all its predecessors, all my photos since February 2008 have completely disappeared. They are completely gone.
    I've:
    1. Rebuilt the library from iPhoto
    2. Used iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library
    3. Used Time Machine to restore the library to various dates (pre-installation of iPhoto '09).
    4. Used iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5) to view restored files from Time Machine.
No luck at all. Two interesting items, though:
    1. When viewing the library in v8.02 as the library exists today, there are 169 photos. Note that there should be about 1,500. When I use iPhoto's "Browse Backups" command to "page through" the Time Machine backup file on the library, the photo count is 169 for every single backup going back 18 months. (In other words, I believe that the TM file is either corrupted going backwards or is only a copy of today repeated backwards. Other theories welcome.)
    2. When I use v7.1.5 and open a February 2009 TM backup library, then it (says it) has 24 photos vs. 169 in 8.0.2. Just as in the other case, when I page back through history into earlier times, the number of photos remains at 24.
The library file is both large, at 3.42 gig for 169/24 amateur point-and-shoot Canon Sure Shots and incredibly stable, according to iPhoto is has been at the same size back a year or more.
Needless to say, but I will anyway, I'd very much like to find those photos of the kids.
A.) Is there some other program that will look into an iPhoto library to tell or show me what's in it?
B.) Any suggestions or theories (suggestions much preferred!) on how to proceed?
All this on MacBook Pro Core Duo running 10.5.7. Permissions cleaned fairly frequently; Cocktail every couple of weeks.
    Thanks.

Time Machine is a back up tool not an archiving one.
At some point these photos were lost - lets say that happened on day 1. As TM works it updates the back up until the back up disk is full. Lets say that happens at day 30.
Then at day 30, anything from Day 1 that is not still on your Mac is dumped to make room for stuff from day 31.
So, TM does not back up things for ever, just for as long as they are on your Mac + 30 days in this example.
An archiving tool would keep them for ever.
As to how this might have occurred?
One possible way is that, at some point as second Library was created, and this then was used to overwrite the older library. This would account for the existing library and the missing photos. How this might happen without human intervention, I don't know. Perhaps a misconfigured back up application at some point? But I'm just guessing.
At the risk of pressing on a sore point it demonstrates the importance of testing back ups too.
FWIW my back up procedure uses two different apps, three Hard Disks, and four locations.

    TD

  • Time maschine backups gone

    Hi,
my time maschine backups worked fine for the last 20 months.
Today I recognized a very slow backup and checked the application. Time maschine wants to make a backup from the hole hard disk. Why?
I didn't changed anything regarding the backup settings or anything else...
When I checked the time maschine settings again, I got a real shock: there are no more backups available! The hole time maschine hard disk space is free!!
Where are my backups and what happend to my time capsule??
A backup tool that destroys itself sometime makes no sence...
    Thanx so far,
    captain nick

I had the same problem. Read my thread "Time Machine Deletes Old Backups without warning!!"
I lost several years of emails and lots of Photos.
Time Machine deletes files without warning and in my opinion can't be trusted as a back-up method until safeguards are in place to verify and re-verify permission to delete old back-ups--BEFORE THE FACT.
I was never given this option though I should have been. I was notified after the fact. I had planned all along that when that drive reached near capacity, (and I was constantly deleting files from the back-ups to save space, like news, podcasts, ****, and anything else that didn't have any reason to be backed-up), I would switch to another drive. I researched how to transfer the library of back-ups from one drive to another, and know this would eventually have to be done.
    But one day..poof....gone.
I mistakenly believed the promo that it was possible to go back and retrieve files from any time.

  • Registering an ipod touch that went 1 month without backup?

Daughter got brand new ipod for 13th bday. I set it up for her on her brand new email and brand new apple ID. and opted out of icloud and registering at first. She went to town on wifi, lots of apps, took pictures, created artwork, loves her ipod for 1 month. Never used itunes for anything, she was able to do everything she wanted without itunes. But then... I bought her some songs for an upcoming road trip. They went into the iTunes library, great. When I plugged in her ipod to synch them, no device appeared in itunes. Windows sees it, but gives it the same name as her older sister's ipod which is weird because older sister still uses that ipod which is not connected. I realized I bought songs into my itunes acct (so that's 3 apple ids for 3 ipods, all running on 1 windows PC) so I'm bound to get beiber fever now. So I sign my apple id out of itunes and sign back in with her apple id to re-purchase the same songs again. Live and learn, us android guys are dumb like that. So now I'm signed into iTunes with her apple id, I still see the cool 80's songs ripped from my CD's, the new purchased beiber songs, and older sister's purchased songs too, but I'm signed in with the youngest's apple id, I don't get that, but will research how all the apple DRM works some other weekend when I have time. With her ipod connected there were still no devices listed in the left column of itunes,so I stopped/started the Apple Mobile service and restarted itunes and it popped up so I'm thinking now I can drag/drop songs to it. But no, it wants me to register the ipod now.
    Here's my question:
Only options are "set up as new ipod" or "restore from backup". There is no backup for this newest ipod since purchasing and using it, but I see backups available for me and the older daughter. I figure those are bad choices. "Set up as new ipod" sounds bad to me as well, it sounds like all the photos, apps and saved files will be lost. So only option is to exit itunes. I have searched this forum and manuals but can't determine if "set up as new" is going to blow away all data on the device that was used prior to resigtering and make it a factory-fresh device with all the data wiped clean. I know I mentioned I'm an android guy, but don't hate, I do own an ipod touch. Actually it's my 2nd ipod, my classic went PVS. I'm just new to multiple users, DRM roadblocks, and this problem of using the ipod before registering it. Thanks for your time. No rush. Road trip is in a few days.

Take it to the store and find out.  I wouldn't want to give you any confidence.

  • Is it possible to recover lost video files from a backup gone wrong?

Hi, my brother in-law was backing up his Macbook (OS X 10.7.5) videos to a seagate eternal hard drive and I managed to accidentally knock it and disconnect it during the process.  Some of the videos were still on the computer but some got deleted. is there any way to recover these files??
    Thanks

It sounds like the files are gone. In the future if something is important, have it backed up in more than one place.
If you don't have a clone backup it's time to start. Just like a seat belt and an air bag protect you in different ways when driving, you need both Time Machine and a clone for full protection.
Storing files "in the Cloud" is also helpful. I like DropBox, but there are other services like Microsoft's OneDrive, box.com etc that are helpful. I like DropBox because it allows you to upload files larger than 2GB.

  • Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly Backups & Tapes Pooling

We are running number of servers, and have recently migrated from HP Data Protector to System Center DPM 2012 SP1. I am facing two issues here in which the potential solution is requested. I have created one Protection Group with 1 week retention for Daily
Backup. Different selections or sources are part of this protection group from different servers.
    1. The issue # 1, is that when I wanted to create more Protection Groups for Weekly, Monthly and Yearly Tape Backups, then I could not select those volumes which are already part of Protection Group that I created for the Daily Backup (probably due to the
reason that same data source can't be part of multiple protection groups). The data source selection will repeat in all protection groups, so please advise how can I achieve daily, weekly, monthly and yearly backups?
    2. Can I restrict some specific tapes (by allocating through bar codes) to each protection group so that only specific tapes will be used for daily, weekly, monthly and yearly backup? This way the offsite tape movement will also be achieved.
Need solution on both issues. Please help.

    Hi,
For item 1. use following PG settings.
    1) In the protection group, select short term tape and long term protection.
    2) Select daily, only full backup, or Full plus incremental based on your needs.
    3) For the long term goals, select weekly, monthly, and yearly.
For item 2. - there is no provision in DPM to specify certain tapes for each goal, but if you create a colocation PGset, you can specify how long to write to a tape and control if different goals use the same tapes or not by adjusting expiry tolerance.
See Colocate data from different protection groups on tape

  • Library Backup Goner severely wrong

I used the latest itunes to backup everything in my library before reformating my hard drive and reinstalling os x. I've gone to put all my music back on anf my imac g5 just spits the dvd out without even recognising it. Anyone come across this and have a solution?

    Miklos:
There is no way to get the true size of what you've selected to backup until you start the burn as you've found out. Since your library folder is small enough to burn intact to a DVD from the Finder that would be the best route at this time. You won't be able to access that disk from within iPhoto but will be able to replace a corrupt library with it if you ever needed to. When the library gets to big for a DVD then you'll have to look at burning portions via the Share->Burn Disk menu option.
The keyword problem is due to a know bug. Hopefully that will be corrected by the next update whenever that is.
iPhoto does not support multiple burn to DVD-RWs. Nor does the System. It's just the nature of the beast. They have to be erased before they can be used again and that's a slow process. With the low price of regular DVD disks so reasonable I find it better just to use a DVD-R disk. It's faster on the burn.
Your maintaining a current/daily backup on an external HD is a very good strategy. In case of problems you have a current copy to revert back to (see:A Tale of Woe).

  • Is my backup gone?

i have a lacie 120 gig d2 external harddrive that i used as a backup and as my itunes holder of music since it was 30 gigs of music. i lost my powerbook g4 1 gig harddrive, but managed to buy a replacement 160 gig that is working beautifully and back up my stuff and xfer it on to the new hard drive... my only concern is over 30 gigs of music that may be lost forever.
after the backup i was attempting to copy all of the music to the powerbook when an error happened. i disconnected, and then tried to reconnect. presto... no mounting... now, i can only get the harddrive to show up in disk utility but onlly as a device... no volume... i tried with my imac as well but no luck... is there anything i can do to make this harddrive remount? i tried data rescue II but it didn't seem to work.. it said it found 0 files and i can't believe that is true. thanks for any help!

Hi, David. If you disconnected the drive without first dismounting it from the desktop, that may indeed have hosed everything on it. If Data Rescue II, the best utility available for circumstances like this, finds nothing to recover, then yes, your files are probably gone.
You could try a data recovery service, but be prepared to pay many hundreds or even thousands of dollars for that amount of data if it can be recovered, and at least a hundred or two for the attempt even if it can't.

  • Time Machine Backups gone since Yosemite install?

And on a second, possibly related, issue (as discussed in this thread: TimeMachine backups are not accessible after the clean install of Yosemite):
Just had a weird glitch with Dropbox recently whereby files and folders disappeared but I thought "It's ok. Everything is Time Machined. I'm fine!" only to discover that my backups on the Time Machine only extend to the last week... which is shocking, to say the least.
I know for a fact that a few days ago I saw that my 750GB external TM drive was down to about 8GB free and now there is suddenly 82GB free, plus a never before seen folder called "lost+found" next to the Backups.backupdb folder. What is it and where did it come from?
Just noticed now that my 750 GB drive holds 13.68 TB of data (that is seriously impressive), and that the lost+found folder is 22.66 GB big.
Fortunately, Dropbox has the "Restore Files and Folders" feature so hopefully nothing is lost but this Time Machine glitch is a horrible eye opener - all of a sudden I cannot rely on my backups extending back at least a few months, like I have entrusted it to do for years.
Since upgrading to Yosemite I have had a whole bunch of... seemingly trivial... glitches and bugs (dropbox syncing errors, re-establishing Apache and a local test-server issues plus a few other minor irritants plus the unexpected random reboot of the computer twice in the last 2 weeks) that have now all added up to leave me anxious about what new problem is going to manifest.
For example, in trying to view any Time Machine logs that might give a clue as to when or why the backups have disappeared I opened Console only to find that the console window doesn't appear. Anywhere. Even new ones.
I'm not a geek and have no idea how Console might help me but i was simply following the instructions in this link http://www.macworld.com/article/1131534/tmeye.html but Yosemite is not doing what I think it should.
This is what that app LogViewer Time Machine displays (seriously, my Console doesn't show a window - how do I fix that?) about the earliest backup, which is from Tuesday, Nov 18, 2014.

Any help or assistance or guidance would be deeply appreciated. Haven't had any major issues with this machine since I got it, till the Yosemite update.

Just back from an Xmas break in the wilderness and took a look at my Mac. Firstthing I see is that Time Machine has not backed up since 24th Dec. LogViewer for TimeMachine reports the following:
12:15:13 am - Starting automatic backup
12:15:14 am - Error determining directory contents for /Volumes/BackUp Brain: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=256 "The file “BackUp Brain” couldn’t be opened." UserInfo=0x7fa539607ad0 {NSFilePath=/Volumes/BackUp Brain, NSUserStringVariant=(
        Folder
    ), NSUnderlyingError=0x7fa539607e30 "The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -36.)"}
    12:15:14 am - Backing up to /dev/disk3s2: /Volumes/BackUp Brain/Backups.backupdb
    12:15:15 am - Error -36 applying backup protections to /Volumes/BackUp Brain/Backups.backupdb/Diarmaid‚Äôs  27" iMac
    12:15:15 am - Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/BackUp Brain/Backups.backupdb/Diarmaid‚Äôs  27" iMac size:37
    12:15:15 am - Backup failed with error 2: 2
With variations of the same till today. My 750GB WD Elements external is still there visible on the desktop, displaying 66GB free with the "lost+found" folder and the Backups.backup folder, only this time neither is displaying any contents.
Seriously, does anyone have any idea what is going on with Time Machine? If I cannot rely on it for automatic backups I don't know what I am going to do. It has ALWAYS been there, working perfectly in the background and saving my *** numerous times.
