More space used after a harddrive upgrade

I just upgraded my MabBook HD from 500GB to 750GB. I "Reinstall" Mac OS X 10.8.4 and then used Migration Assit to bring over all my old "stuff", settings, etc.
My old 500GB drive used 330.52GB and the new 750GB is using 453.5GB. Why the 122.98GB increase?
   New 750GB                                      Old 500GB

I found the problem... there was a "_CCC Arcive" folder with 8 folders from the past 2 years with misc stuff that amounted to the increase of used space. I have no idea where that came from.

  • 21.1GB space used after IOs5 upgrade on iphone 3gs

    Hi,
i just Upgraded to IOs5 on my 3GS and there is 21.1GB of space used for other.  does that seem right?  Is there a way to figure out what is using that much space and reduce the usage?
    Cheers

There are still battery issues with iOS 5 and another update is forthcoming. In the meantime do you have an Exchange mail account on your iPhone?
Your charging problem is almost certainly related to the water damage on your iPhone. You can do an out-of-warranty replacement for $149.

  • About this mac shows more space used by apps

When i triple tap the "Applications" folder in the finder, it shows me that my apps are taking about 15 Go. However, the "apps" bar in "About this Mac" reveal that apps are taking me over 90 Go !!!
PS: I don't have any backups on my mac and i haven't set up time machine yet.

That Applications folder should be only what you added to it not what was in launchpad after initial start up of your Mac . 92GBS is a combination of original apps and what you added to your library Application Folder. This is how My Mac is working but it seems like a lot of space used for a 2013 MBP

  • Too many files and space used after Migration Assistant

After running migration assistant to transfer my 2006 MacBook Pro (core duo) to my new 2010 MacBook Pro (i7), I noticed the amount of space used went from 87 gb to 144 gb. The number of files went from 816,834 to 981,311. Was this to be expected? That many new files and space used?
One thing that happened on the first run was about an hour and half into the transfer it thinks it had lost the connection between the systems and would not restart. I had to quit the migration on the old system and reboot(power off and on) the new one. The re-run finished ok. It did think that the users on the old system were already on the new so I had it replace them. There were a few folders that indicated they were from the old mac and I deleted them.
Also there were a lot of Disk Permission errors when I ran a Verify Disk Permissions which cleared up when I ran Repair Disk Permissions.
Any thoughts/ideas on the disk space issue?
    running 10.6.3

    Solved.
On the restart of the Migration Assistant, it duplicated my user directories and put them in a deleted users directory in /Users.
I deleted that directory to free up the disk space.

  • More space used that i have songs

I have a strange problem when trying to add songs to my iPod mini. I deleted a few songs off my iPod and added some new ones, but when I went to play them, they weren't on it. Upon plugging my it back into my computer, it showed that they weren't on my iPod, yet the gig of space they used was gone. What happened? Is there a way to get those songs off so I can try adding them again? I really don't want a gig of space to be taken up by songs I can't listen to.

Just in case you haven't seen this.

  • I created an iCloud account and also had to get more space after I have done the purchase, I am unable to backup my phone! I have a stable wifi connection at home and all I see for hours and hours is "Backing Up .. Estimating time remaining"!!!!! Plz help

I created an iCloud account and also had to get more space so after I have made the purchase, I am unable to backup my phone! I have a stable wifi connection at home and all I see for hours and hours is "Backing Up .. Estimating time remaining"!!!!! Plz help I'm unable to make the backup as I need to transfer all my data on my new iPhone 5S

This may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup.  Then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.
In the meantime you can back up your phone to your computer by connect it, opening iTunes and going to File>Devices>Back Up.  Also be sure to transfer your purchases (File>Devices>Transfer Purchases).  Then set up your new phone and when given the option, choose Restore from iTunes Backup and follow the prompts to restore this backup to your new phone.  This will be much faster than using iCloud anyway.

  • Editing info.. using more space

If anyone can answer this, please do! i bought a new ipod color 20gb and i copied about 7GB of music to it. when i go into "get info" and add an album cover or change the genre, and sync it with my ipod, it takes up space like it is copying the file as a duplicate, so now i have 9.5GB used.
also, in my iTunes when i click "my ipod" on the left so view my iPod files, on the bottom of the itunes program it says i have 7GB used, and then right above it, it says i have 9.5gb used!! i am so confused. please help if you can lol

    Christopher,
This issue has been cropping up in iPods regularly. It may be a memory management problem, or it may be an indication of a bad operating system install.
While this seems to happen from time to time, I have not read a good explanation, but I suspect that the iPod's operating system isn't the best at memory management.
These are the ‘standard’ fist steps to this type of issue:
First try Resetting Your iPod to correct this problem. It may take several attempts.
If that does not solve the problem, then Restore Your iPod and put the music back on your iPod, from iTunes. With a fresh OS and a blank HD, it should register the right amount of space used after you re-sync it with your iTunes.

  • More free space after iOS 5 upgrade!.

I actually have 2.5 Gb more free space on my 32Gb iPhone 4 after the iOS5 upgrade.  Is this possible?

I am also lost.  I upgraded itunes and ios5 on my iPhone4.  Now I have a gray slate screen on my IP4 that just says iPhone, and I am being asked to configure my device.  I cannot receive phone calls.  They go directly to voice mail, and I cannot make phone calls.  I have tried "everything".  Even with it "looking like" a backup/restore may be in process, it does not backup or restore.  I have no device, no music, no contacts, no pictures.  Can anyone help? Please....

Unfortunately you can't, the additional storage belongs to your first account, you can't transfer it.

    Hello westbrkk,
this is an user-to-user forum, so unfortunately we won't be able to tell you why.

  • Process "deskjet" is using up over 1GB of RAM and over 60GB of VRAM after an hour or so of use. ALSO, "Your startup disk has no more space" error.

The blowers will kick on and I get the: "Your mac os x startup disk has no more space available for application memory." with a list of running apps that aren't going over anything abnormal (Chrome, Finder, Activity Monitor). Quitting any of the applications that appear the dialog continues to pop up. Performance doesn't appear to suffer but the computer definitely acts like it's busy with only a few applications open, however force quitting deskjet slows down the blowers (fans).
I have 20GB remaining on my boot drive. I have also lived several months with less than 5GB remaining and have never seen this error from Mac OS X 10 - 10.8. The only thing different between then and now is the boot drive is a SSD.
I focus on the printer drivers because that's something I can't find anywhere else through Google or Discussion searches. The "startup disk" error has some hits that I have yet to go through completely, although initial results show that it may be a vague bug/leak with SSDs.
(Edit: After clearing up another GB or so and 10 minutes of "deskjet" being killed, it's the longest I've gone without the dialog popping up. Although once I restart that driver will go out of control again).
-Less than a month old clean installation of Mountain Lion 10.8.2
    -Early 2008 MBP
    -SSD bootdrive
    -500GB secondary HDD
    -4GB RAM
-Permissions have been repaired just yesterday.
-SMC and PRAM reset as well, although it won't hurt to do it again when I get back home.

  • About My Mac is telling me that I'm using more space than I think I am

    Hi there,
I've only had problems with storage once before, so I bought DaisyDisk and used it - it cleared out a lot of space and I loved it - this was months ago by the way. Then, I checked my storage today and suddenly my 'Apps' tab was taking up about 130GB of data. I knew that my 'Apps' area was only taking up about 10GB so I got spotlight to check my drive again so that I could find out what was actually taking up all of this space. After this, I checked About My Mac again and the 'Other' tab was suddenly taking up loads of room. I opened up DaisyDisk and deleted some old files and managed to get from about 40GB of free space to about 90GB. I'm happy with this so far but I want to know what is in that 'Other' tab. DaisyDisk isn't helping me as it says that my user is taking up about 90GB of space but when I look on Finder it says that it isn't as big as that. I really want help so that I can clear out all the unnecessary junk off of my Mac before I go back to school. Also, I know that I have 20GB of files in my user (shows when I copy everything from the All My Files section in to a new folder), so I don't think this 'Other' section should be as big as it is.
I have a 2013 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display with a 256GB Hard Drive.

    Thanks for any help.

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Update using iTunes on your computer. The space requirement does not apply because of how the process works via iTunes as opposed to over the air.

  • I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and I noticed that I have more capacity available on the Macintosh HD. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my MacBook and I noticed that I have more capacity on the Macintosh HD than before the upgrade. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer and nothing appears to be missing. Before the upgrade I had around 111 GB capacity with around 10.50 GB available on the Mac HD but now after the upgrade I have 119 GB capacity and 20.92 GB available. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

No, but the upgrade removed unneeded PowerPC code and changed the way free space is determined.

  • Firevault: "Your homefolder is using more space than required"

I would like to ask for some help. After every log-out, Firevault tells me that "Your homefolder is using more space than required" (or something between that lines). What can I do?
    Thank you for the help.

    Hi Morales,
Unless you have a need for military-level security, FileVault is overkill. It slows your computer because all sorts of cache and preference files are repeatedly encrypted and decrypted, and because filevault is saving all your files in a big "container file," disk and directory errors that would otherwise be minor can cause massive data loss on a filevault-ed computer.
To keep SOME files secure, an encrypted, password protected disk image is a better idea. You can make encrypted disk images with Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Do File > New > Disk Image from Folder.
