More Windows XP classpath BS

I've been trying to install a Java X10 home automation program called Alice (http://jhome.sourceforge.net) on XP- I wanna squirt water into a birdbath for 10-15 seconds several times a day, and the commercial programs only have 1 minute granularity (so does Alice, but source code is available).
Alice runs with "java -jar alice.jar" (I'm a little puzzled by that, since it's a GUI program that you'd expect to start with "javaw alice.jar"). It makes use of the Java Comm API, but no amount of classpath fiddling (including explicitly naming "C:\WINDOZE\j2re1.4.0\lib\comm.jar") seemed to let Alice find javax/comm/SerialPortEventListener, which is in comm.jar.
For what it's worth, I solved this particular problem by unzipping alice.jar and comm.jar with WinZip, then zipping it all together into a new alice.jar (using the original manifest.inf). "java -jar alice.jar" now runs Alice under XP.

The "Bull" in BS refers to one Obadiah Bull, an 18th Irish lawyer that practiced in London, who was so well know for his, well... BS... that for decades later the whole Irish contingent of the English Parliament was known as "the Irish Bulls," in his honor.

Try putting the comm.jar in j2re1.4.0\lib\ext\
Also check that you don't have more than one java run time install on your system and if you do have more than one make sure the one you are running has comm.jar installed in the correct location

  • Firefox not responding, seems like other browser is hijacking inquiry, will not let me reset, states cannot reset because one or more windows are open

when i type in a search, firefox says it's not responding. Although firefox still showing not responding I am taken to websites that I did not request. I tried to reset firefox but it said there is a problem because one or more windows tabs are open even though they are not.
What is cloudnet? just one of the items that pops up on the bottom right of the screen during my search

Getting redirected to unwanted websites can be caused by an add-on, or by external malware, or by a change to your connection settings.
    (1) Check Extensions
    (A) In Firefox:
Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable. Or if it's clearly crap, remove.
Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    (B) In the Windows Control Panel
If there is no remove button on the Add-ons page, typically the extension was installed externally and can be removed through the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program.
If you click the "Installed on" column heading to group the entries by date, you may find some undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some free software. Take out as much trash as possible.
    (2) Malware scans
Our support article lists free tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. If you notice a pattern of search engine result links being diverted to unrelated pages, this can be a stubborn infection involving a rootkit, so try the TDSS Killer first.
    (3) Connection settings
Normally Firefox piggybacks on your IE connection settings. You can change that (or malware might have changed it). To view and modify:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
Change to "No proxy" and see whether that makes any difference.

  • Windows/Linux -classpath flag seperator is different

When I am using the -classpath command line option the syntax is different on Windows vs Linux, this is a headache, anyone know why or a way around it?:
    Windows:
    javac -classpath "xxxx.jar;yyyy.jar" *.java
    Linux:
    javac -classpath "xxxx.jar:yyyy.jar" *.java
I have verified that if tried the other way around it fails...
    Thanks.

    Hi!
This problem results from the different ways Linux and Windows manage path entries. The solution to this is to read the system properties (System.getProperty("file.pathseparator"). I'm not sure if this is the correct identifier. Just display all properties and you'll get it.

  • After one more Windows update Firefox became VERY heavy - worse than IE (search has no paging any more - just 1 gigantic list of things, etc). Any solutions?

My notebook is 5 years old, but works good and I dont want to change it now. Yet, the more Window updates I do the HEAVIER is the work with web browsers.
I gave up on IE and switched to Firefox because it was much lighter for a long time. But since a few days ago even simple image search with Firefox gets up to 200 000 kb of my CPU (just like IE used to do) compared with 100 000kb with the very same Firefox just a couple of months before. And so, Firefox now slows my computer enormously.
Is there any way lighter versions of Firefox or some way firefox can recognize older computers that can't tackle so much of weight? Or perphaps uninstalling some plug-ins will help?
Example - things like searching for Video or Images, which, since recently, bring pageless results, where you scroll down forever, slows my computer a lot....
ps. I really don't believe it is a virus.

    Tsiqa,
Try FF4 it's miles qucker the 3.6.*. I loaded FF4 because 3.6.13 was so slow. Also try removing it and re-installing (3.6.13). There are still some sites that won't fully work with FF4, that's why I'm still running both.

  • How can I copy file/folders from and to hard drives? How can I have two or more windows of explorer so that I can drag and drop from one hard drive to another?

    Hi,
I am a new customer (purchased last week) of MacBookPro (latest) and its my first ever Apple laptop.
I am almost lost to find the operating tools.
    1. How can I copy files from hard drive to computer and vis-a-versa?
    2. Only can browse one but how can I have two or more browses at the same time like in MS windows?
    3. No right click works on track pad?
    4. Is there application/ program compatible to MS office? If so how much and how can I purchase?
    5. Is there AutoCAD program that is compatible to MS Window AutoCAD? and if yes how much and how can I purchase?
I will very much appreciate if you could email me the with the solution/answers please.
    Regards,

    1) For some reason this happens once in a while with FAT32 enabled external harddrives. I have no idea why this happens but it most easily solved by reformatting the drive. First make sure you've copied everything from the external drive to your internal harddrive. You've done this earlier so I assume you know how to do this.
Now the reformatting part. Open Finder and go to Applications. Look for the folder called "Utilities". Click on it. In it you find a program called "Disk Utility". Click on it. Now look for the external drive. You probably see two entries for the disk. Click on the one that contains the name of the drive NOT the one that describes the disk (Like for example 320.07 GB Samsung S2 Portable Media).
Now you see four tabs in the righthand part of the window. They're called "First Aid", "Erase", "RAID" and "Restore". Click on "Erase". This opens the tab with (amongst others) a dropdownbox (Format) and a textbox (Name) . In the dropdownbox select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Take note! This selection disables usage of the drive with Windows PC's. If your goal is to share the drive with Windows PC's select the MS-DOS FAT option.
Enter a label for the drive in the textbox Name. Now click on the button "Erase". This will format the drive.
Now when it's done you can copy back all the items you've copied to your internal harddrive earlier.
    2) Opening two windows like Explorer on Windows is opening two Finder windows on the Mac. Simply click on the background. In the menubar you items like 'Finder", "File", "Edit", "View", et cetera. Click on "File" and "New Finder Window". Do this two times. Alternatively you can click on the background and press CMD-N two times.
    3) You can right click on the trackpad. This however depends on if you've enabled the feature in System Preferences. In the topmenubar click on the Apple icon and select "System Preferences". Now look for Trackpad in Hardware. Click on it. You see three tabs with the names "Point & Click", "Scroll & Zoom" and "More Gestures". Select "Point & Click" and look for "Secondary Click'. Make sure it is checked and make sure it has written "Click or tap with two fingers" written beneath "Secondary Click". When you're done exit System Preferences. Now select the background and tap with two fingers on the trackpad. This should open the contextuel menu with options like "New Folder", "Get Info" et cetera.

  • BT 3.1 - No more windows 7 startup sound

    Hey there Apple forums!
I decided to install Windows 7 on my Mac a while ago. I had Bootcamp 3.0 and all the problems related to audio that BT 3.0 had, including the red optical light. Once BT 3.1 was released, I decided to install it. Notice how I hadn't changed any driver from Bt 3.0 until I installed 3.1.
Once I installed the update, most audio problems were immediately solved. No more ghostly red optical light, no more laggy audio, etc. Audio output was still low, but nothing "Enchance audio output" couldn't solve. I was seemingly happy, until i realized that the windows 7 startup sound played no more.
By startup sound I mean the chime that plays when you're in the login screen. This is a very small glitch, as it used to work in Bt 3.0, even with the audio issues it had.
Is there any solution? And before you begin asking protocol questions, yes, the startup sound IS enabled, yes I have the default Windows sounds set, I haven't changed the theme (don't know if that even matters, it shouldn't matter).
If it helps, when i connect two low speakers to the audio output jack and start Windows, and raise the volume, I CAN hear the startup chime in the login screen. But there's not even a faint sound when the external speakers are gone.
Should anyone know a solution, please help me with a post. And the speakers I have suck, so they're not an option.

    Hi
Had same problem, tried everything like reinstalling drivers but still the problem continued. However today i tried changing the driver for the sound card to the generic driver and rebooted my macbook pro. on startup the sound card would not work on the generic driver and the system kicked in with an automatic troubleshoot and installed the correct drivers.
Somehow this has enabled the startup sound to work and the system doesn't startup in a muted state.
Haven't a clue why or how this has worked or how long it will continue to work but give it a go.

  • More Windows 7 Phones please!

Will Verizon be making the Windows 7 Phone platform a priority at any point?  It took forever to release one W7 Phone with outdated specs, and yet all the user reviews are all very positive.  That speaks a lot about the quality of the OS and it seems like more models would sell very well.  I for one have been been holding out for a W7 phone with a QWERTY keyboard since last year, and there still aren't any available from Verizon.  Any timeframe on a better selection?

I doubt Verizon will make WP7 a priority, however, we the people can push them into making it a priority by spreading the word, showing it off, and getting people to want it.  Point out the security breeches on Android (boy is android becoming an easy target), and explain to them how WP7 is a more secure platform.
    1. Apps have no access to the OS.  They only have access to isolated storage, and cannot access the isolated storage of other apps.
    2. Apps are tested by Microsoft prior to being published in Marketplace, and they are tested not only for user experience, but for malicious code.  (Android apps are published as soon as the developer submits them, not tested at all).
    3. IF (and that's a big if), somehow a malicious app got past testing and into Marketplace, once it was discovered all Microsoft would have to do is revoke its security certificate.  Each app that is certified gets a certificate, and the phone checks back on that certificate at some interval (I don't know it).  If the certificate is revoked, the app automatically uninstalls from the phone, protecting the user.  No such auto-uninstall method exists on Android.
    4. The vast majority of iPhone people are just sheep.  I was talking with a friend about my phone yesterday, and she said, "I just want an iPhone just because I have wanted an iPhone for a long time so I'm going to get one."  I said, "baaaaaaaaa."  They'll buy anything Apple sells just because Apple sells it.  Don't waste your time on them.  If Steve Jobs said urine was a great energy drink, you know what they'd be doing???
    5. Show off your phone.  Show it off as much as you can.  I won a phone from Microsoft, and it's an ATT phone, so here's what I'm doing with it.  I have a friend who has an iPhone (and is NOT a sheep - imagine that).  I gave him the phone, and he is going to use it for a couple weeks before giving it back.  He knows there will be a learning curve compared to coming from iPhone, but he wants to give it a fair shot.  So I'm letting him borrow it, so he can judge for himself.  Then when he gives it back to me, one of the ladies in my church is going to buy it.  She has wanted one since I showed her the Sprint Arrive I had, when I jumped over to Sprint before discovering how pathetic their coverage is here.
    6. Did I say show off your phones???
With the lack of support from Verizon on this platform, if we want it to succeed, it is going to be an uphill battle for us to win, but it is a battle worth winning.  Nokia is coming to WP7, so that will help the platform, but with no word on whether they will support CDMA, we can't count on them coming to VZW (though I would love that!).  Fight the good fight, people!

  • Only 2 choices for Windows phones now?  I'm considering switching carriers just so I have access to more Windows phones.

I know Windows phones aren't as main stream as the other two OS but for those of us that want to sync our Windows devices, this is very important.  Give us access to more of the Windows phones that are available.  While I'm asking;  Bring back the Nokia Windows phones.  Nokia has incredible apps that aren't available on other phones.  Everyone is always impressed when I show them what my Nokia phone has to offer that no other brands do.

    I'm with you.
let's buck the American tradition of being in debt over ever little thing!
Pay for our phones.  Keep the least expensive service possible.
If we really want to call the shots, we can buy one of the phones available that can be used on any network.  iPhone 6, Google Nexus 6, one plus one, just to drop names.
Imagine what might happen to prices if we can change carriers at any time.

  • Sharing a single I Tunes Music File between two or more Windows computers

I have several authorized Windows Xp computers on a common router. The I Tunes Music file on the main computer is authorized for sharing among the workgroup, and is visible and accessible on all machines. When I set the I Tunes preferences to that drive on other machines, the music is not visible in the other machines' installation of I Tunes. How do I get the other machines' I Tunes to read these files???

File -> Add to library and select the music folder.

    Hi Folks,
    1.  The Lenovo site suggests uninstalling ThinkPad Power Manager - this hangs during uninstall from the Control Panel window with a blank screen.
    2.  ThinkVantage Access Connection - this returned the following message - "The setup must update files or services that cannot be updated while the system is running."?
Any help would be most appreciated.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Go to start- Computer double click on C: SW preload, double click on DRIVERS,double click on VISTA,double on ACCON,double click on setup. This will reinstall Access Connections and see if that helps with the uninstall problem. This how it is for a T500. If you have to you can always download from Lenovo and reinstall also. Hope this helps. However when I do my install I'm going to do a clean install on a formatted hard drive using the upgrade disc so that'll eliminate uninstalling anything.

    Thanks for all the help!

    1) I currently use DVD X Copy Platinum to backup my DVD movies. Is there a similar program out there for Macs?
There aren't currently any packages sold legally in the US, if that's where you are, that can copy commercial (i.e. copy-protected) DVDs. Flip4Mac is working on a package called Drive-In that will legally copy copy-protected DVDs so a Mac. If you're outside of the US where backing up copy-protected DVDs is legal, just do a web search for "Mac OS X DVD Rip" and you should find a lot of information.
    2) I currently use CCleaner to help clear the junk that can accumulate on Windows systems. Is this even necessary for MacS
It's not necessary since there's no registry in Mac OS X as there is in Windows (the Windows registry is primarily what CCleaner works on).
    3) I don't use Adobe Photoshop too often so I didn't want to pay for the Mac version again. Anything that's similar and cheaper? (or even free )
There's Gimp, if you don't mind running X11.

  • One more for the classpath experts

    Hi there,
I am having classpath trouble. Have made a little example of my problem. I have a simple HelloWorld program called Test. Here is what I do...
First, I try to run it with no CLASSPATH or classpath info and naturally it fails because it cant find the Test class.
    [~/mainwebsite_html/core]$ java Test
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Test Then I put the classpath info in to allow it to find the test class and it is fine. This also works with the full path info.
    [~/mainwebsite_html/core]$ java -classpath . Test
Hello WorldThen, I move the class file into another directory.
[~/mainwebsite_html/core]$ cp Test.class otherdir/Test.class I execute the file with the correct classpath info but now it no longer works.
    [~/mainwebsite_html/core]$ java -classpath ./otherdir otherdir/Test
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: otherdir/TestI have tried all sorts of combinations of full path directories, using ./ and not ./ etc.
It seems so simple that I just don't get why it wont work...
    All answers appreciated.
    regards
    Andrew

thanks Kayaman - but I don't get it.
This Test program is not in a package. All I want to
do it run it. Does that mean I need to cd to that
directory to run it? (Might be a solution I suppose)No. He's saying that you specified otherdir twice. You only need to specify it in the classpath, not in the class name. If you do combine a directory with the classname, then it refers to the class' package.
How do I run a java program somewhere else in the
system (even assuming I get the classpath right?)Just like he showed you: java -classpath theParentDir TheClass
Side note: You really should put your classes into packages.
