Motion sketch issues

while trying to use motion sketch in CS6 AE I click on start to capture and as I do my cursor turns into cross hairs but when I move the cross hairs it turns back into a cursor and I cannot track my object and it does not start the time.  nothing happens.  My layer is highlighted and the levels are appropriate and the 2 boxes are checked off.  Why is this?  anyone.

Same Thing is happening to me.

  • Motion sketch doesn't seem to work under AE CS6  v 11.0.3.6 & MacOs 10.9 (Maverick)

    Hi
After the Mavericks Update for CS6 (AE 11.0.3.6) on MacOs, i have trouble using the motion sketch tool. After clicking "start record", the mouse cursor is supposed to turn into a crosshair allowing you to record motion for a selected object on the canvas. Instead, after the update, the crosshair cursor dissapears on leaving the button. Info window still tells you to click in order to start recording, but clicking and dragging on the canvas results in the regular behaviour i.e. moving an already selected object (or drawing a selection frame if no objected is selected)…
Has anybody else fencountered the same problem yet and found a workaround? Is it a bug? Will Adobe fix it?

    > Has anyone found a workaround for this?
    - Use an earlier version of Mac OS or use Windows.
    - Use After Effects CC (12). If you aren't ready to subscribe, you can still use the trial version free for 30 days.
    > I, like many others have submitted a bug report but there is no guarantee that anything will happen especially with the big push to subscription.
This has nothing to do with a "big push to subscription". We have already issued multiple CS6 updates since we started the CC subscription. We just need to balance work on this bug fix with other work. Bug reports help us to determine how many people are affected by an issue and can help us to set priorities.
My best guess is that we'll have a CS6 bug-fix update with this fix available (plus others) in the early spring. Until then, you have several options for workarounds.

  • Using the write on effect and motion sketch - how to cross T's and dot i's

I'm trying to use motion sketch and write on to create a signature (using the position values from Motion Sketch layer to control the position of paint brush on Write On layer).
What's the best way to cross the letter T or dot an i?
With motion sketch, as soon as you release the mouse button, things are terminated.
If I simply restart the motion sketch capture to cross my t, the horizontal line happens at the beginning (time 0), even if I advance the playhead /CTI to the appropriate spot (after rest of word drawn).
Is the best workaround simply to repeat the process on fresh layers to complete any discontiguous strokes and then manually position those in the timeline?
Not a big deal if I just want a re-usable signature.  But if I wanted to use this on longer writing samples more routinely, it could get a bit cumbersome.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

When animating a person's signature, I use masks to define a path, then apply the Write-On effect: one instance of Write-On for each contiguous piece of writing.  This means that at natural pen lift points, there's a new instance of Write-On.
Animating real signatures takes some doing because it's not an automatic process at all, but it's worth doing in the end.

  • FCP and Motion formatting issues with DVCPro 50?

The material is DVCPro 50 NTSC 48khtz. (Item properties indicate that I initially digitized it properly.) My sequence settings are DV50 NTSC 48khtz.
I wanted to create a vignette effect so I exported my clips as a Quicktime (current settings) sequence to Motion. When I was done there I exported the sequence from Motion back to FCP as a DV NTSC movie.
Some of the Motion effected clips will play, look great and then all the sudden I see a black band appear on the East side of the frame. I can stretch it in Motion some but it just degrades the image so I'd rather not.
I'm surely grateful if someone can steer me in the right direction here.

Thanks for the workflow tips and suggestions. I backtracked to my original sequence and found the problem originates there. I have narrow black lines on both sides of all these clips. Since I resized a few clips with moves, I didn't recognize the problem. Now that I'm closer the root of it, any suggestions?
By the way, these problematic clips are intercut with no problem library footage that was also shot on DVCPro 50 and I took in on the same deck.
I cruised the forum for any occurence of a similiar issue and most replies seem to suggest a formatting issue. I don't get it since I think I have everything set up correctly. As a precaution, I also tossed out my preferences using FCP Rescue 5.
    Welcome to the discussions, splotch.
Not sure what is causing this, but I might propose an
alternate workflow. Have your clips on the timeline
as you wish, ctrl/right click on them and select
    Send To Motion.... Click the
embedded and open Motion ticks, give it a name, then
continue. Do your work in Motion, save, quit, and
fall back into FCP. Your clips may lose their
"anamorphicness" on their round trip, but just
ctrl/right click on the clip and select Item Properties/Format..., then
    click on the anamorphic button.
Try this and see if you are still getting the same
    problem...

  • Motion crash issues

I am having major problems with my Motion program. I suspect it is the fact I have the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphic card. I want to know what cards will prevent my crashing issues. Will the ATI Radeon XT1900 help fix my problems? or do I need to get an even more beefy card?

Graphics cards will not cause Motion to crash. Even the lowly Mac Mini won't crash from underpowered GFx chips. Waiting around, yes. Crash? Nope.
When you crash, you get the option of Reporting to Apple? Take that and copy this section of the log:

  • Motion tracking issues

I am doing a rather difficult (for a beginner) sky replacement on a panning shot.
My first issue regards rotation. I've selected position and rotation for my tracking points, but after applying them to my sky layer, it becomes flipped upside down (rotated 190 degrees) and also out of position. Correcting the position is as easy as selecting all the position keyframes and dragging it to the correct starting point, but for rotation this doesn't work (it sets everything to one value). I want the first keyframe to be 0 degrees and for it to follow on from there with the tracking.
Secondly, because the camera pans quite far, I need to change the tracking points midway through as there are no two points I can use that are in the entire shot. Similar to the first problem, I find that when I do this it resets the position of the sky layer, sending it out of place and upside-down. I guess what I'm looking for is a way to apply the motion tracking to the sky layer without losing its initial position or rotation (or any other value for that matter).
    Thanks!

Thanks a lot, I do have mocha but have never used it as I'm still in the early learning stage of AE. I'll watch through a couple mocha tutorials though and see where that gets me.
Regarding the matte, I was intending not to use one as there is so much foliage detail it seemed impossible to key the sky out effectively. Instead I was just going to multiply the sky layer and apply a gradient. I've attached screenshots showing the start and end of the shot, before and after I've done my best on it. If you know a better way I can do it, I'd be very grateful.
    Cheers.

  • Uh-oh: the motion judder issue again

I recently produced a composition in AE CS5 which comprised still images traversing the screen as if a camera was constantly tracking left to right.  The comp was 25 fps PAL widescreen square pixels.
The judder - both in ram preview and rendered output caused my client to complain.  (This was on a 40' screen, but very noticeable on my comp monitor).  It was not a consistent jarring - as if it was wrong field order or an interlacing problem, nor is it caused by memory bottlenecks or disk speed.
This was the first comp I had produced on CS5, and do not recall judder as pronounced as this on CS4 or 7.
I have subsequently tried to rebuild the project using different formats, frame rates, output settings and tracking speeds, all to no avail.   Motion blur increases the problem.
I know that there has been some detailed and extremely valuable discussion about the probable causes of judder on this forum, but I can't seem to corrolate those issues with my own experience.
I have posted an 11 sec single image track at www.jontysexton.co.uk/motion/judder.wmv
I'd appreciate feedback from one of you AE gurus.  Thanks.

    Hi TimeRamapper.
When I say it's academic, what I mean is that it is often out of my control.  It depends whether I am producing a DVD for general distribution or creating a video piece for conference play-in.  If the latter, the production company will tell me what delivery means they want.  It may be laid off onto PAL DVcam , Quicktime or wmv.  Sometimes the DVcam is captured on a media server and played into the conferenceI from that.
I have been producing graphic-based conference openers since around 2000, and have not been aware of such pronounced juddering  - unless it's caused by interlace flicker or field reversal.  I've certainly never had a client complain before!
It's not just in the subsequent playback that it becomes apparent. It is visible in AE ram preview (and Premiere Pro if I create a motion path on a still photograph).  I have increased frame rate to 50 fps but that does not eliminate the problem - or reduce it sufficiently to be acceptable.
My drives are 7200 Raid 0 and the 12MB ram is hardly being put under pressure during ram preview.

  • Motion Capture Issue

    Hello,
I'm experiencing an issue with motion capture recording. I'm
recording a desktop application that operates as a side bar. When
menus open and close during playback they leave a black outline on
the screen. this also happens when the mouse moves, so you see a
trail of residue from point to another. I have a feeling this
something to do with the refresh rate on the PC where I'm recording
    but I'm not totally sure.
Has anybody else seen this happen and does anybody know how
    to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
Do you get the same effect when you publish your project as a
SWF? If so then to start with I would select each of the Full
Motion Recording slides in your project and choose Slide > Video
Quality > High Quality. Next publish again and see if that
    improves things.
If not, then carry out the following steps:
    1. Choose Edit > Preferences
    2. From the Recording preferences choose Full Motion
    Recording
    3. Select the 32 Bit video color mode for SWF conversion
    4. Click OK
    5. Capture your FMR footage again.
If this still doesn't make any difference you could also try
Disabling the hardware acceleration. This option can be found in
the FMR section of the Recording Preferences.
    Best - Mark

  • Sudden Motion Sensor Issues

To start this off, recently, when I slightly move or touch my MacBook Pro Late 2011 15 inch, it shuts down. It has only been like this for about a week. I disabled the SMS through the terminal using "sudo pmset -a sms 0". This seemed to fix the issue, but I no longer have a sudden motion sensor. Now, when I push down on a certain area on the bottom left of the computer, it shuts down. Is this something I should worry about? What should I do about the SMS? Should I take my mac to the Apple Store? Thanks for the help!

Now, when I push down on a certain area on the bottom left of the computer, it shuts down.
top down, the bottom left of the computer is the battery, not the HD.   Indications are a fault of the battery to logic connector in such a case.
The SMS sensor is no worry, on or off.

  • Motion blur issue once exported to DVD through Encore

I have 59.94 HD footage. I edit it, export it through Adobe Media Encoder to Mpeg-2 DVD at 29.97, drop-frame, lower field dominance. I then import that .m2v file into Encore, and then export to DVD, without re-transcoding or encoding anything. The DVD plays back with a 24p-like jitter, or blur to it. I do not understand this. After encoding the .m2v file, I went back and played that on windows media player, and other media players, and the video played back as it should originally, very smooth. Why is it that in between creating the .m2v and exporting the DVD in Encore, I am getting this 24p-like blur/jitter to the video? Does it matter that some of these videos I am putting to DVD-DL and are quite large? Hope someone can help. Thanks. Any other info needed, I will supply for you.

Matrox, velocity and anyother hardware based NLEs use a 720 x 486 timeline. I've exported countless SD files through AME and the m2v files played fine through a Windows media and VLC, They also imported and burned to DVD with Encore flawlessly. SD is not the issue at all.
The problem is as stated in the original posting is.
I export the HD timeline(59.94) through AME as a MPEG2-DVD (29.97 Lower field) and the file plays fine in the WIndows Media Player and VLC. No jitter. Perfect
It's when I put the m2v encoded from a HD (720 x 1280 59,94 frame rate as a MPEG2-DVD in AME ) in encore ( do not transcode ) and then burn to a DL DVD. When the DVD is played back, the jitter issue arises.

  • Motion Performance issues

Man... I'm having all kinds of problems tonight.
I work heavy with Maya and create animations. I'm working on a good sized animation right now (good size for me being about 2-3 minutes)
I created the animation in Maya rendered it in Mental Ray and export out still images. I'm up to about 4,000 right now.
I've been importing them into Motion as Sequential Images. They are all 854x480pixels, 1:1 Pixel Aspect, .PNG files with an alpha channel. I'm import them into Motion in chunks... frames 0-400 as 1 image sequence... 400-1000 as the 2nd image sequence and so on...
I've found that with my system Motion really struggles to play through the image sequences. So I've been importing the sequences into Motion, and then exporting out as a .MOV using an animation codec. I was hoping that they would play better in either Motion or Final Cut.
Everything seemed to be working OK until tonight when for some reason, everything seems VERY slow with Motion and Final Cut. Neither program can handle these QT movies. I tried using a variety of different codecs but I'm not having much success. I've done the old shut down... wait a few minutes and restart. I've tried using alternate codecs, I've got no other applications running... I opened up my activity monitor and it said all my processing power and RAM was free and not being used.
When I try scrubbing through the timeline of Motion ( I have about 6 .MOV's with Animation codec, each about 600frames long) I can move the scubber but the image never changes on the canvas. If I import the .MOVs into FInal Cut and try to move the scrubber I get the spinning rainbow wheel and it takes about 2 minutes for FC to update the canvas. Very frustrating... I cannot work like this.
Anyone have any advice. I'm at my wit's end.
    Thanks
    -The Frakster.

    Hey Mark.
Forgot to say thanks for your answer.... Thanks
So far I've tried exporting as a QT movie with the following codecs
    ANimation
    None
    Uncompressed 8bit
    DVNTSC PRO
    Intermediate...
DVNTSC Pro worked good but changes my aspect ratio.
The rest of them all have really high Data Rates and don't play through very well on my laptop.
I was wondering- When I export out of Motion as a QT movie with an animation codec it plays just fine in QT. But it will not play through well in Final Cut. Why is that?

  • DVD Menu/motion background issue

Every time I try to add a motion background to my DVD menu, the photoshop menu gets stretched horizontally. It looks fine when you add the video but when you preview and render it or burn it to DVD it stretches the menu. see screen shot.

Your menu shows as 1080x720; you say this is for DVD, but size would be wrong for DVD or Bluray.
Yes, you can get away with a variety of sizes; Encore will eventually transcode the menu to the project defaults. But using odd menu sizes makes problems more likely.
Make the menu itself the correct size. (Start with a library template for the project type - HD vs SD, standard vs wide.) Bring in a motion menu asset that is also the correct size. Don't  let Encore do any resizing of those assets.

  • Motion Tween Issue

So I'm making a drop down menu (first time) and the motion tweens are... well they're being weird.  There is not arrow on the frames where the motion tween is.  And the drop down menu is not apprearing... however, there is definitely a motion tween on those frames, but no motion is occuring...  What am I doing wrong?
I'd be happy to upload the file for examination.

The button is what I'm trying to get to work.  I'm trying to make a drop down menu on the "artists" button.
I've attached the file in ".txt" format, so just changed it back to ".fla" to make it work.  If maybe you could give it a look see and help me out a little?  I'd really appreciate it.
The tweens are under the "menu" movieclip.  You can just access it from the library.
    Thanks.

  • FCP X Generator from Motion Transcode issue

    Please help!!
I have created a FCP Generator in Motion 5. However it would not transcode. All the other generators prior to and subsequent have transcoded and are violable for me to work with in FCPX. Can I try and retrieve the work?
I can see the project in the saved Motion folder but cannot get Motion to reopen it.
Can I try and retrieve the work?

Have you checked to see if you have a version available in your autosave vault? Go to ~/Movies/Motion Projects/Autosave Vault/ and see if there is a good copy of your project there.
