.motn file stays black in fcp timeline.

.motn file stays black in fcp timeline when I saved it in motion it automatically makes the changes in the timeline. The only thing is, I can't see it , it's just black, the only thing i can hear is the audio. What am I doing wrong?

(edit: I discovered i can see it in my viewer when i doubleclick on the file in the browser, although it doesn't play smoothly)

So it works i you need to click on modify and then set alpha to black. There's just one more thing that doesn't work well, when i set in view the render to best the imported movie file goes black, any idea how that happens?

  • Motn file transparent in fcp but same clip exp to mov file is black in fcp

This is not a problem per se as I have a fix but my question relates to understanding the why?
I have a short 4 second clip I made in Motion that is simply white text in a semi-transparent box that comes down from the top into the frame and then fades away. The background of the motion project is set to transparent, render is set to high quality. If I place the .motn file in a track in my FPC project and it is placed so that it is the track in the foreground of the frame, I get the usual red bar asking for a render. Composite mode on this track is set to Normal. I do a render and all looks fine. My text box comes down and fades away. My video in the background blends through fine and life is good. If, however, I render in Motion using Export, settings set to Animation Codec (http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/motion_text_in_fcpspencer.html) and then replace the .motn file with the .mov file that was exported, my sequence is totally black from the overlay file. If, however, I then select this .mov in the track and set the Composite mode to Screen, it looks just like what my sequence looked like with the .motn file.
I know what is going on, but I don't know why. What is confusing is the .motn file is transparent in the foreground with Composite Mode set to normal but the .mov clip must be set to Screen to accomplish the same thing.
Inquiring minds would like to know why?

You need to make sure that
    1) Motion is actually exporting an alpha and that
    2) FCP is correctly interpreting that alpha
Just choosing the Animation codec when you export from Motion is not enough. You need to go to the Output tab Color is set to "Color + Alpha".
If you have done so and still don't get transparency (without changing the composite mode) in FCP, then select the project file, right-click and choose item properties, and check the alpha interpretation - if it says none, change it to premultiplied with black.

  • AVI files appear black on the timeline, no video

I have a series of AVI files that play fine in Windows Media and VLC media player.  When I drop them on the timeline (Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, version 6.0.5), each clip shows up as black – with the correct length, but no video.  Can you assist?

    Hi,
What is the source of the file?
Is it from a screen capture?
If the file is in a variable frame rate the Picture would come up as black.
You can try cc_merchant's advise of converting the file, it should work.

  • Best AVI export settings for a XDCAM EX 1080i60 35VBR FCP timeline

I've editted a couple of XDCAM EX 1080i60 35VBR timelines in Final Cut Pro. The dimensions of the source footage and timeline sequence settings are 1920 x 1080 XDCAM EX 1080i60 35VBR.
They will be used at a large conference center and the client has asked me to delivery HD AVI files.
So far, everytime I export an AVI file from either the FCP timelines, or HD Quicktime XDCAM EX 1080i60 35VBR composites that I've made from the timeline, the AVI file that results is either alot smaller than the 1920 x 1080 quicktime file and/or pixelated to some degree, and not as clean as the HD quicktime.
I have very little experience with AVI and was hoping someone could suggest appropriate export settings. As I said, the client only indicated they want AVI files, and that their equipment can display HD files.
So I'm trying to maintain the quality of the original and editted footage.
I'd like to work with the tools and export options available within FCP7 (FCS3) and quicktime, as opposed to having to purchase some AVI transcoder, but I guess I'd be open to that if I had to otherwise take a huge quality hit.
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I'd like to work with the tools and export options available within FCP7 (FCS3) and quicktime, as opposed to having to purchase some AVI transcoder
As far as I know there are no tools/export options within FCP7 (FCS3) and/or Quicktime to do what you probably want to do (compressed HD AVI export). But if a fully uncompressed 1920x1080 AVI export is ok for you / your client then you can use Export > Quicktime Conversion, set the Format to AVI and change the Options >> Video >> Settings >> Compression type to "None" ... bear in mind that this will produce some pretty big exports file size wise (about 6-7 GB per minute).
Or instead, you can download and use MPEG Streamclip. Open your HD Quicktime XDCAM EX 1080i60 35VBR composites into MPEG Streamclip and choose File > Export to AVI ... then in the AVI Exporter window you can +choose the codec+ you need and press the "Make AVI" button (leave the settings at default, especially Frame Size which should be "unscaled"). Note that AVI is just a wrapper, not a codec. Make sure you chose an HD capable codec that your client can handle (it's unlikely that they will be able to play back any Apple XDCAM EX variant, or indeed any codec that starts with "Apple").
Or just send them an unscaled H264 test file and see how they get on with that (and you can export H264 from FCP, Compressor, Quicktime and/or MPEG Streamclip). It's scalable (handles any resolution including HD) and is pretty much universally supported delivery codec. I'd expect your client would be happy to accept it if you explain that the format will offer the quality the need.
However you proceed I'd strongly recommend you send the client a few test encodes first to have them confirm that they can indeed read / handle your encodes correctly.
    Hope it helps

  • FCP interprets .ipr & .motn files (correctly) with Black alpha. Since when?

For the first time in a long time, I imported .ipr and .motn files into an FCP project on Monday and was shocked to see that Alpha was interpreted (correctly!) as Black. (They were interpreted as Straight for as long as you could import those files types directly into FCP, since version 4.5)
The question in all of this: does anyone know when this all changed?
I'm pretty sure this is a recent change but I've been schooled frequently on this forum (not a bad thing at all) so this might just be another case of me getting sloppy.
Edit: I am on all the most recent stuff - FCP 6.0.3, QT 7.4.5, OS 10.5.2, etc

So, I just ran across this little gem of the interaction between Livetype project files in a FCP timeline, QT 7.4.5 AND Aja Kona driver 5.1 NDD, all of which I have an operate. I've not removed my Kona card to see if that is my issue but perhaps I will tomorrow.

  • FCP wont recognise or import .motn files

I dont understand whats happening. Why wont FCP import .motn files?
Is it something to do with my timeline options? Or saving options in Motion?

I am setting for the following:

  • Not able to import .motn files into FCP

For some reason I'm not able to import .motn files into FCP. While in FCP, I use "send to motion" and uncheck the embed box. After motion opens and I add my motion content, I get the following error when trying to import the .motn file back into FCP "File Error: 1 files(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown". What is strange is that I'm able to create another test FCP project with different media, and everything works fine. All tests and media are done on the same drive.
I'm using the latest updates of everything FCP 5.0.4 and motion 2.0.1
    Any ideas anybody?
    Thanks!

  • Fcp x and motn files

For some reason, I cannot import motn. files into FCP X. When I use the file>import>files. it does not read them.   FCP 7 reads them just fine.
    Any ideas?
    Sandra V.

Good idea.  Once they are imported to either FCP 7 or FCP 10, they are not editable anyway, so what's the difference. Thanks for that.
I am unable to import IMovie projects in editable form as well.  That would be the file extension .rcproject.
    Have you experienced this?
I was hoping to start my project in IMovie (using the trailers) and move to FCP X for a more sophishiticated look.  No luck!

  • Need help with non-video clip transitions on the FCP timeline...

Hi all, I am struggling with this problem with the FCP timeline: I have a mix of things; .motn includes, .psd includes, etc. and I want to put a transition between them and a normal video clip, BUT, as u can guess, it does not work well. I guess because FCP can't see the frames inside the Motion file, it won't let u do a cross fade or whatever with any amount of time applied to it. So what to do?
I started to modify the motion files but realized this would not work, as I often use bits of one motion animation in various places starting and ending at different timecodes. So i need to be able to place a transition at the beg/end of motion clip on the fcp timeline. I started doing this:
    1) place a slug above the track of a joining of motion/video clip
    2) place the transitions on both ends of the slug.
Is this the way to go? I have dozens of these that I need to fix asap, so all advice is appreciated!
    coocoo

    Hi Cooco,
there are several ways to find out whether it is a [*matter of handles*|http://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/lj_handles.html]
One is to select the clip>hit the S key (slip tool) clickandhold it . A brown line drawing a rectangle will appear and will continue beyond in and out point revealing the available clip's handles. If not handles are available then the brown line will stay within the clip on the timeline.
Visit the link I sent to you to more understand handle matters.

  • Media Manager and .motn files

    Hi all,
I am having a strange problem....I have Media Managed a number of projects, and they have .motn files (either media that was on the timeline, sent to Motion, modified, then saved, OR, I used a Master Template in FCP that I made in Motion). When I open the MM'd project on my computer everything is fine, but on a different computer, FCP cannot find the .motn file. I assume it is because the template or associated files are on my system, but I would hope that Media Manager would create a .mov from that .motn file so it can open on a different system. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Great explanations, but I want to make sure my workflow is sound before tossing something. Given that this is an integrated suite, I'm not too comfortable needing to do the following, so please correct me if I am wrong, or share the better way. After I Media Mange my Final Cut project, I need to:
    1) create a new folder called "media" inside the "media" folder Media Manager created.
    2) drag and drop the motion media from the media folder(s) created with "Copy to Folder" (explained above) into the media folder I just created.
Question: Is my assumption correct that I do not need to drag and drop things like "wisp04," "basic blur" or "texture 01"? If so, why on earth are they included?
If this is the workflow, I shutter to think how many people have lost media files because they assumed incorrectly everything was being collected via FCP Media Manager. Is there a step-by-step somewhere that you can point me to? Bonus questions: Can you speculate the reason or advantage of doing it this way? Do you think Apple should improve it? Thanks!

  • Livetype Image turns Black in FCP

    Ok,
I've got a canvas (Ovals) from Livetype. I changed it using the color sampler (sampling a color from a clip in my FCP timeline). The Livetype canvas plays just the way I want it. I import it into FCP, and it just displays black. If I import into FCP with the standard blue Ovals canvas (not changing color using the color-sampler), then it will display the canvas in FCP.
The biggest confuser for me here is that this worked fine, and I made a DVD and Quicktime of this project for my client ages ago. I am now trying to work with the files exported to a hard drive by media manager. For some reason, the Livetype files have quit displaying in FCP (as described in the first paragraph). Oh, it was actually transparent until I turned off the alpha channel on the .ipr clip in the browser.
Any thoughts or advice would be great,
    Lawrence

I am having the exact same problem. Although, in my case, it worked fine the other day, the Ovals lower third bg came in to FCP fine and played etc. Today, I made a change to the title, and then back in FCP once it reset itself, the bg is gone. The titles are still showing, but no bg.
I think it might be the latest version of LiveType too. I had created a project awhile ago using the Ovals lower third, I changed the colors and it worked with no problems. Then recently, I went back into that sequence to change something, and it wouldn't show up anymore. So strange. Luckily, in that case I could copy paste the already rendered title from an older version of my sequence and that worked fine.
If you've found anything new out, i'd love to know the work around. It is quite frustrating.
I'll try trashing my preferences too, just in case that does the trick.
    Thanks,
    Jenn

  • How to quickly combine 2GB QT files for use in FCP Multiclip?

We have 3 Focus FS-4 Pro 80GB HD units that work with 3 Sony DVCAM camcorders. We edit on FCP 5 and 6 on Quad G5s and one Intel G5 with Mac OS 10.4.11 and 10.5. We work in DV primarily.
Recently, we began to do a large number of multi-cam programs which need multiclip editing on FCP. Being FAT 32, the FS-4 breaks the QuickTime DV files into 2GB chunks. This poses an editing problem. At the present time, after importing all the 2GB files to the computer/FCP, we have to stitch them together in the FCP timeline, export the resulting timeline into a single QT movie and reimport that into FCP for multiclip editing. This takes OVER HALF THE TIME it would take to digitize the three tapes(using a one hour 3-cam show as an example).
Is there a solution? A speedy Mac utility that combines the 2GB Quicktime files into one large file? Or some other workflow that we have missed?
I may write to Focus to see if the drive could be reformatted into NTSF without losing a lot of functionality. Have not done this yet. Don’t expect a positive answer. Know they have an FS-5 with 90min clips, but can't replace the FS-4s yet.
Any help will be very appreciated as we are bogged down with this now.

If I might offer a little bit of a different perspective.
Having worked a number times with multi-clips and lots of footage (3 day long one on one interviews as an example) There really isn't any need to concatenate all of the footage from one camera into a single clip. I have never stayed on any clip for 5 minutes (~2GB of DVCPro HD 720/30p).
The process of the edit just doesn't demand that you work with all the footage at once. Work with the segments you have and then move on to the next. I would assume at some point your going to pull shots from some other time in the shoot to fix a reaction or a camera error as well as any number of other things editing requires, don't get caught up in the tech and end up making more work and files.

  • .motn files have red / white checkered pattern after render

I'm running Motion 4 - I create a .motn project and choose "Save As..." and for the "Collect Media" option I have "Copy to Folder" selected.
I then take the saved .motn file and use Compressor to render it into a MOV file.
If I leave the Motion app open, then it renders perfectly.
If I keep working on a different project in Motion then the MOV file comes out with a red / white checkerboard pattern where my asset was in the original .motn file.
Why does it matter what I'm doing in Motion if I've saved a self-contained project out and am using that to render?

That you have a Motion project in the timeline. That you rendered. Motion has now lost track of the file, and FCP is still playing back the render file. As soon as you make a change and the render file is lost, you're hosed. Use Open in Editor on the Motion project file and see what happens there.

  • Motion in FCP timeline - Compressor render isn't pretty

I've had this problem for as long as I can remember, and I've always used a work-around. I would like to understand what gives.
When I do a title in Motion, over some footage for example, and I roundtrip back to FCP, everything looks nice in the timeline.
When I render out the movie, though, the title always ends up blocky. I've always worked around this in a couple different ways. 1) I export directly out of FCP as a quicktime (not compressed, just the full movie). The titles always look great. 2) Rather than roundtrip a .motn file, I just export from Motion as either a ProRes or Animation or whatever and import to my FCP project. Ends up looking great.
Why is it that if I use a .motn in the timeline and export through compressor it looks blocky?? Is this a compressor issue?
Am I crazy or doesn't everyone run into this issue?
NOTE: I am usually exporting to AppleTV or iPhone when it becomes obvious. A DVD compression isn't bad, but it's also not "HD" in theory.

    Hey Patrick:
I checked and all looks good:
The sequence has no field dominance, the motion project has no dominance and the project has no field order.
    So it's completely progressive.
After some playing around here's what see:
The original footage in FCP is ProRes422(HQ). I have 2 graphics, one compresses great, the other not great. The difference is the Motion file format.
The graphic that compresses clean and sharp is a graphic I did with the original file format in DVCPROHD 1080p24.
The graphic that does NOT compress cleanly was footage from my FCP timeline that I decided to "send to motion." It's a short ProRes(HQ) clip that I added a title to. The format of the Motion project is XDCAM HD 1080p24. This is by default to match the frame size of ProRes, I assume since:
    XDCAM is 1920x1080
    DVCPRO is 1280x1080.
Even though it matches the frame size there's something in the sizing that FCP doesn't handle very well.
Since almost all of my footage is ProRes422 HQ (I am editing film that was scanned), this is always an issue I run into!
So my guess is: Compressor doesn't encode the Motion default (XDCAM) mixed with ProRes correctly. If I recall correctly, I think that if I export directly out of FCP the compression is FINE. It's only if I export through compressor that this happens. Will have to do some tests, but the full export takes a long time.
