Motor does not spin

Here's the problem. I connected Umi 7764 and a Pacific Scientific P70360 drive, with the following wiring:
umi 7764 screw terminal -> p70360 J4 command i/o 26 pin female connector
inhin1 (bar above) ->  fault- (pin 8)
inhout1 (bar above) -> enable- (pin 6)
step (cw) -> step- (pin 2)
dir (ccw) -> dir- (pin 4)
+5 V (same screw on the same axis) -> enable+, step+, dir+ (pins 1, 3 and 5 respectively)
And, to the required inputs section of the umi I connected to the +5V screw a +5V source I/O power (pin 19).
The drive has the led lit green (meaning system is ok) all the time it's powered on.
At 1D Interactive, I made a velocity test (operation mode - velocity), set the physical parameters (speed, accel, etc.) pressed start, yet the engine does not move. The parameters are: 200 rpm speed, 100 rps/s accel and decel, target position 500 steps. "Current direction si forward" and "axis is moving" are lit green, yet the motor is not spinning.
Did I miss something at the wiring? And how do I tell that the UMI is powered up? It's an UMI 7764, has no leds. Oh, I use a pci 7340 motion controller, connected via a cable with a lot of pins to the UMI.
 http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3442 , figure 4A, that's the wiring scheme I used.
Thanks in advance.

Sarevok,
the UMI-drive cabling sounds ok to me, so I think we should focus on the configuration of the P70360 and the motor cabling. If your motor is bought from NI and/or is supported directly by the P70360, you should be able to configure it through the dip switches. With this said I strongly recommend to use the P7000 tools and a serial link from your PC to configure the drive. This method provides methods to test the drive and the motor without using the 7340 and the UMI. This simplifies troubleshooting significantly.
The P7000 tools also provide an option to adjust the drive to the motor's inductance to optimize the drive's performance. With some motors this step is absolutely necessary to make the drive work at all.
Here you can find more information and the download link for the P7000 software tools. If you don't own a serial programming cable, please refer to our online catalog (P/N 780099-01)
I hope this helps,
Jochen Klier
National Instruments
P. S.: If these hints don't help you to get the system up and running, please provide information about the motor type.

  • New HD does not spin up in

    Hello,
I replaced the orginal 6 GB HD with a 30 GB drive (both from Maxtor). The problem is, that the new drive does not spin up and the on/off button on the iMac keeps yellow and not green.
If I only connect the power cable but not the IDE cable the HD spins up. If both cables are connected nothing happens!
Are there incompatibilites with different IDE drives? Does the new HD perhaps need a "turn-on" signal and does not get it? I have tried three different HDs, the problem does always appear.
    The computer is an:
iMac Rev. D, 333 MHz, 160 MB memory

You need to set the drive to Master. Cable select doesn't work. The pin selects are usually on a sticker on the drive.

I think the drive would start up, but this is a rule too.
The tray loading iMac requires the boot partition to be within 8gig. Since there are hidden partition before the first visible partition, people recommend that you make the first visible partition 7.5 gig to 7.9gig.
You should be able to use Unix symbolic links to 'move' some directory like /Users to the second visible partition.

  • Receiveing a "Following Error" when clicking HALT on MAX, motor does not energize

I recently encountered this strange situation. When turning the following error on (value other than 0, say 200, etc), and I move a motor until it encounters this following error, its axis will be killed by default.
That poses a problem since an un-energized motor in my situation may cause some damage (it may drop down some parts on our fixture). I need to keep the motor energized after a following error.
I've tried using the STOP vi after any following error occurs, but I've noticed it may take 3 or 4 iterations of STOP to re-energize the motor.
Better yet, in MAX, if I constantly move the motor shaft by hand, back and forth, and try clicking "HALT", I will continuously see the "Following Error" light turn on, and the motor never energizes. It is constantly killed, even though I'm clicking on HALT.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey, wanted to get back to you on something I'd mentioned earlier regarding the halt command. I'd stated that the only way to get past the killed state of the motors was to reinitialize the controllers. This isn't correct and I'm sorry for any misunderstanding on that. I had failed to clarify that the halt command will indeed reenergize the motors.
The halt basically will, first, move the set point or target destination to the current position of the motor and, second, reenergize the coils (because they'd been previously de-energized by the inhibit line going active due to your having exceeded the maximum following error). So, in the situation where you're continually moving the shaft of the motor and pressing halt on the controller, the command is resetting the set point to the current position of the motor. But because of your continual motion, the motor has moved more than your maximum following error by the time the coils are energized. The controller then finds itself in a state of having exceeded the maximum following error and the inhibits are fired again, hence the unresponsive nature of the halt.
In considering your situation and bouncing some ideas past R&D, we think that your best solution is to implement some sort of a brake on your axis. The whole idea behind monitoring the following error is for safety purposes. With a brake you'll be able to continue monitoring the following error and see the exact behavior you desire. What you'd need to do is wire the inhibit line to the brake such that when the following error trips the motor and the inhibits are fired, they will activate the brake and you'll hold position. You can then call halt to reenergize the coils and the brake will release at the same time.
Another way you could accomplish this would be to use an axis or stage with more friction. If the friction were sufficient to hold the load of the stage, then when the motors are de-energized when exceeding the following error, the slippage would be none to minimal.
The brake seems to be the best approach for you. I hope this is helpful to you and again apologize for being unclear on the halt command's characteristics in my previous post. Please let me know if you have any further questions and we'll get you the help you need.
    Best of luck,

  • MAX does not run stepper motor

I am an abosolute novice at NI Motion and cannot get MAX to move a stepper motor. I'd be very grateful for any help.
The system consists of a PXI-7340 Motion Controller card installed in a PXIe-1065 chassis. The PXI-7340 is connected by means of a SHC-68-C68-S cable via the Motion I/O port to the Motion I/O port of an UMI-7774 board. The UMI-7774 board is supplied with a 24Vdc power supply as well as an isolated 15Vdc power supply to its power terminals. Two stepper motors are to be controlled using this UMI, which has 4-axes capability. The Axis 1 and Axis 2 sections on the UMI are connected to a Danaher Motion P70530 Stepper Drive each by means of a D-Sub to D-Sub cable via the Control port on the UMI and the J4 Command port on the P70530 Drives. The P70530 drives are supplied with 65Vdc power from a bench top DC power supply capable of 70V, 15A. Each P70530 drive is connected to a Pacific Scientific Powerpac stepper motor (N33HRHJ, 65V, 5A).  (Thus, two P70530 drives and two stepper motors are connected tothe UMI.)
I am trying to get MAX to turn the motor. In the listing in MAX, under NI Motion Devices/PXI-7340/Default 7340 Settings/Axes 1/Axes Configuration, all limits were disabled, settings saved and initialized.
However, in the 1-D Interactive window, when the Target Position is set to a value, e.g. 2000 steps, and the Start button is pressed, the motor does not move.
But, the LED on the P70530 blinks until the Kill button on MAX is pressed.
Can anyone tell me why the motor does not move?
Where does one go to learn more on MAX? Why are all the manuals at NI made for experts who already know what they are doing and not for beginners? The Help is no help at all really.
    Regards,
    PKP

Thank you, Jonas, for your reply.
I called in to NI and talked with "Vivek" and he helped me set the MAX settings and the DIP switches on the P70530 motor drive (amplifier) to get the motor to run. He pointed me to the "Getting Started P7000 Series Stepper Drives" 28 page manual, which for some reason was not included in the CDROM that came with the P70530 drive or with the pre-installed manuals in the PXI chassis. (You would think to include all the relevant manuals on the CDROM, but nope.) The manual showed how to "Change Settings" for the PXI-7340 inside MAX and set it to the 7340 Settings for P7000 Drives.
Under Axis 1/Axis Configuration/ Stepper Settings tab, set the Stepper steps per revolution to 5000.
Under Axis 1/Motion I/O Settings, all the filters, switches and the "Inhibit Output Settings" has to be disabled.
    Now the motor runs. Yay!
But there is one teeny-weeny thing.
Under  Interactive/1-D Interactive, when the velocity is set to 100 rpm or more, or the Acceleration is set to over 20 rps/s, the motor whines and does not rotate.
When V=0 to 95 rpm, Acc=10 rps/s, the motor runs for a given Target position value (such as 200, 2000, 20000, etc.)
Here is another weird observation. When the Velocity is set to say 60 rpm, the actual motor speed measured with a tachometer and a stroboscope is found to be  about 1440 rpm, i.e., 60 x 24 rpm. (I measured the rpm using the two different devices and both tend to agree.)
Is the "rpm" unit a typo? Should it be something else?
What am I missing? Why is the stated rpm different from the actual measured rpm?
    Thanks for any help.

  • External hard drive not spinning up

    Hi,
I have a 160GB Freecom FHD-3 external hard drive connected to my iBook with USB 2.0 that I use to store all my music / movies etc. I have a slight problem with this drive and i was wondering if anyone could help me.
Firstly when i turn the iBook on with the drive connected it takes a long time (>3 mins) to boot up. Secondly if the drive is connected and i put the iBook to sleep, the drive spins down and automatically powers off. When i wake the iBook the external drive does not spin up and my iBook freezes with the spinning pizza of death as it is desparately searching for the external HD with my iTunes music folder in.
I did not have this problem with my Mac Mini and i was wondering if there was anything i could do to sort it out.
    Cheers

dickonhowell, Welcome to the discussion area!
I am guessing that the Mac mini keeps the USB ports powered even when sleeping. I would bet that the iBook turns off the USB ports when sleeping. That is probably why you experience different things with the 2 different Macs.

  • Lenovo G770 Fan not spinning up after resume from sleep or hibernate

    Hi guys,
My lenovo G770 is facing an issue where when ever I resume the system from either sleep mode or hibernate, the fan does not spin up, as a result I have to either restart the system or open the system, pull the wire of the fan and put it back in the power socket.

Did I or someone help you today? Press the star on the left to thank them with a Kudo!
    Solved!

    Hey Abdul,
Welcome back.   If the fan runs normally on first boot until you suspend / resume, then I might imagine this is power management quirk, or something confused in the embedded controller.
    1) Try going into BIOS and reload defaults - this might refresh values there.
    2) Try uninstall / reinstall power management driver and the energy cut software (Idea power manager).
Did you recently update BIOS or drivers?
I would also try some temp monitoring software just to see how CPU temps run after you come back from sleep to see if the fan should be running.

  • Home folder does not appear when trying to restore it from a backup

Hello Macintosh community, I hope you can shed some light on this very strange behavior I am experiencing when trying to recover a User's home directory from a Backup archive.
Recently, my MacBook internal hard disk stopped working (hardware failure of the disk itself, it does not spin any more). I had been making regular backups of the entire internal disk to an external hard disk.
I went to an Apple reseller and had them put in a new internal hard drive, and also purchased MacOS 10.5, which was installed on this internal drive.
I then installed Backup 3 onto this 10.5 system, and mounted the external drive with the backup to restore the contents of my home directory.
However, when opening the Backup application and trying to restore, it shows the entire contents of the hard disk to be restored, EXCEPT my home directory. Home directories of other users are visible, just not mine. So, Backup is effectively not able to restore my home directory.
In an attempt to restore other information, I decided to try to restore the entire contents of the backup to another location, and then manually retrieve any other files I needed from that restored backup.
During that restore, I thought I'd open a terminal window, and take a look at the /Volumes directory. In this directory, I noticed a volume named after the Backup Plan I was restoring from. This volume was not visible in the Finder, just in the /Volumes directory visible in Terminal.
Curious, I opened the Users folder of that backup volume, and to my surprise I found my home directory with its contents! So, from Terminal, I did a recursive copy from the 'missing' (in the Backup application) home directory to my internal disk, and lo and behold, it contained the data from my home directory!
So, I am thinking that my home directory exists in the backup, but that the Backup application is somehow not showing it.
The directory structure I copied using Terminal only contains the contents of my home directory the way it was when I created my initial full backup, and thus it does not contain any subsequent modifications, stored in the 1.5 years worth of incremental backups I created later. I guess I could manually go through all incremental backups, extract the home directories from each of them, and manually combine them into a single one, representing the final home directory before my disk failed, but that is the Backup application's job.
    My question to the forum:
    - Have any of you experienced a similar problem, and if so, were you able to recover the 'hidden' directory from the backup files, and how?
    - Maybe the Backup development team at Apple can provide some suggestions for how to retrieve my home directory from the backup files I have.
Obviously, it's important for me to get my files back. I did make backups on a regular basis, so I thought I did the right thing. It's especially frustrating, since I'm pretty sure the backup files contain the home directory, but I just can't get at it!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    JK
Software versions of system before crash:
    - System version: 10.4 Tiger (up to date with the latest updates)
    - Backup version 3 (kept up to date with the latest updates)
Software versions of system after crash:
    - System version: 10.5 Leopard (up to date with the latest updates)
    - Backup version 3 (version as of the day of this posting)

The original install had 3 regular users, and I'm also seeing the "Shared" user when looking at the volume via Terminal. On my new disk, I created a user (with admin rights) with the same name as one of the users on the back up. When I log in as this user and then start Backup again, the home directory of that user is visible in Backup. However, the home directory I want is still hidden.
On a side note: I'm wondering whether these full or incremental backups are somehow similar to .dmg files, since they seem to appear in the /Volumes list while Backup is restoring from a backup file.
What I am doing right now, is to have Backup do a complete restore. But as soon as I started Backup, I opened a terminal window, did a cd (change directory) to the backup file (which appears as a volume). Then I copied the contents I of the home directory I want (via cp -R <home-directory-name> <destination>) to another hard disk.
Interestingly enough, I noticed that Backup, while it was doing the restore, opened a dialog indicating that it could not close the backup file because it was in use by me having a Terminal window open in one of its directories. As soon as I closed the terminal window, and allowed Backup to re-try, it successfully continued, opening the next backup file in succession.
As soon as it continued, I cd-ed into the home directory of that next backup file, and copied the contents of the home directory from it. So, I'm doing this for the home directory in question for all backup files. I assume that this gets me as many copies (versions) of the home directory as there are backup files.
The next thing I need to to after all backup files have been processed, is to manually try to consolidate all the extracted home directory versions into a single one. Yes, this sounds insane, and it is, but until I know of another way to solve this problem, it's the only thing I can do
What a fantastic way to spend a weekend!

  • Why does vi execute in HIGHLIGHT mode only? Does not RUN from front panel

This is extraordinarily puzzling to me...
The attached vi sends a serial command to a motor controller.  Command has the form /1V5500P0R, where the /1 means "motor 1",   5500 is the velocity, and the P0  means "rotate positive direction" and R means RUN (do the command).
When I run the VI from the front panel, the motor does not respond.  The correct command string appears in the String indicator box, but, the motor does not turn on.  HOWEVER, when I use either HIGHLIGHT EXECUTION, or I SINGLE STEP through the block diagram, the vi works perfectly.  It issues the correct command the motor runs properly after stepping over VISA WRITE to VISA CLOSE...  The VI accepts any velocity command I want to put in the NUMERIC control on the front panel.
I tried putting the code into a WHILE loop to see if that made any difference...and it does not.
    What is happening?
    Thanks,

Simple VISA speed controller forum nov 20.vi ‏12 KB

    Hello Angelica,
Your suggestion about use of the WAIT VISA function works, however, I am reluctant to use it because I do not want to slow down the application.  The application accepts two inputs and creates the one serial output, and the faster it does this, the better for my application.
I had no problem running these VI's on my old PC in Labview 2011.  The new PC requires this WAIT function.  There is software provided by the hardware manufacturer to manually send the SERIAL commands, and it works fine on both PCs.
    New PC is Intel(R) core(TM) i3-2230 CPU @ 2.2GHz, 3G RAM 64 bit processor and  Labview 2012
Old PC is Intel (R) Pentium (R) M Processor 1.73GHz, .99G RAM, 32 bit processor and Labview 2011
Understand that in the attached VI, only a single serial command is being sent, so, is it possible that backlogging or overloading of the device can occur from a single serial command?  This does not happen with the manufacturer's interface.  The attached vi works with the 10ms wait time. This VI is one of a family of VI's that I wrote and operated in Labview 2011 on the old PC, and all of the worked fine without the WAIT function.  Now, none of them will run in either Labview 2011 or Labview 2012 without the WAIT in the VISA as shown in the attached VI.
Do you really think that the command is being sent too quickly?  The device communicates over the RS485 bus at 9600 baud, 1 Stop bit, No Parity, No flow control.  How can a single string be sent too quickly?
    Thank you,
    David

  • Why does not my servo motor work?

    Hello all,
I can work my servo motors, so I have two questions.
Firstly, I'm using PXI-7340 & UMI 7764 to control AC motor on servo motor (TAMAGAWA SEIKI co.),
But in MAX, motor doesn't work with servo type. And there is no signal between AnalogOutput and AnalogOutputGround.
Can I connect UMI to the motor correctly?
Now, I connect encorder signals with changing differential line driver (motor driver) to TTL (UMI) using quadruple differential line receiver.
    Is it right?
If it is right, why does the motor work?
Secondarily, when I use stepper type in MAX, the motor work with open-loop. But when I use stepper type in MAX, the motor doesn't work with cloosed-loop.Why?
Polarities of encorders(A, B, Index) make matches my servo motors by setting in MAX.
    Why?
    Thanks,

    Thank you for your reply.
The "does not work" means that the motor doesn't move with servo type.
In MAX, there is no error when a target position is less than 999 in 1-D Interactive, but doesn't move. When the target position is more than 1000 and I click "Apply" and "Start", error ramps of "Motor off" and "Following error occurred" are red. And the motor doesn't move.
I thought that firstly signals of encorder have been wrong because the motor have not moved with stepper mode of closed-loop and feedback of encorder.
So I would connect correctly wiring of encorders, but the motor doesn't move.
Wiring of all is "STEP", "DIR", "AO", "ENC A, B and Index bar" respectively. In MAX, type is servo mode, feedback is encorder, kinds of limit switch are not used.
I supply it if you need the other setup of wiring or information.
