Motu 896HD problems

Hi
I'm running 10.5.6 on an Apple G4 Mirror door dual 867mhz (I am aware that Logic Express requires 1.25 or Higher, I have a new laptop on order). I recently bought a Motu 896HD on ebay, I bought it because I have one at work that works fine and thought buying the same kit for home would be a good idea. I was wrong. I've installed all the latest drivers, in fact I've tried lots of different drivers and none of them seem to work, wheb I open the Firewire set up panel I get a "General" tab but no "896HD" tab as I should. I took it to work for comparison and the first thing I noticed was that the new Motu seems to be stuck on "out" ie there are two little green lights to the right of the AES/EBU LED one says in the other says out. My work Motu says In, this one says out. Turns out the guy I bought it off of was using this unit as a Slave to an 828. So I guess my first question is could it be that my Motu is clocked to the 828 and therefore isn't recognizing my computer ?
I've also noticed that the newer Motu drivers ie the ones for 10.4 and above are for intel Macs and mine isn't ? However I also tried running this unit on my works iMac (dual 2.6ghz running 10.5) which works fine with the work Motu. I also tried it with my works laptop Macbook (dual 2Ghz running 10.5) It doesn't work with either of these either. The guy I bought it off of swears it was in good working order.
Any ideas, help advise would be appreciated.

I've had the same problem with my MOTU Traveler. You need to re-set your interface. Instructions for this should be in the manual that came with your MOTU.

  • Daisy Chain a Motu 896HD and a FirePod, can't get it to work??

I'm trying to Daisy Chain a Motu 896HD and a FirePod, but don't know how to get them to work together. Logic Pro can see them seperately, but I can't get it to recognize them at the same time to use 16 audio input channels. Can anyone tell me how this can be done?
I know I'm suppose to set one as the Master and the other as the Slave, but can't figure out how that's done.
I have read in the Motu Mannual how to daisy chain two Motu interfaces, but can't figure out a motu and a firepod. I emailed Motu for help, they said I would need to get help on the software side.
I've been going through post after post on here, but can't find a similar problem that's been helped.
    Thanks,

    Axiom,
I replied under the other thread for ya. AMS=Audio Midi Setup. It's in the Applications>Utilities folder. Create an Aggregate Device and select it in Logic's Core Audio driver pane.

  • 2 MOTU 896HD's with Latency

I have 2 MOTU 896HD (896HD#1 & 896HD#2) interfaces that I am using when recording. My drive in Audio Hardware & Drives is called "Combined MOTU's". I have a latency problem with the second MOTU (896HD#2). In playback of recorded tracks 1-8 (they go thru the MOTU 896HD#1) there is no latency problem. The MOTU 896HD#2 tracks 9-13 have a -1/64 latency problem in playback of recorded tracks. I know that because when I playback recorded tracks I have to change the delay to -1/64 on tracks 9-13 in order to correct the latency of those tracks. I talked to the people at MOTU and all my settings are correct.
The MOTU people suggested that the "I/O Buffer Size" of 256 in the Audio Hardware & Drivers may not be hitting the MOTU 896HD#2. Is there a fix for this latency. Is there a setting that I am missing. Has anyone had this problem with multiple interfaces?

Thanks for the help. My friend Kurt suggested the same thing and it worked. I bought a BNC Coaxial Cable from Radio Shack and hooked it up to the out of 896HD#1 to the in of 896HD#2. Recorded a track and on playback... NO LATENCY on the 896HD#2 recorded tracks.

  • Syncing Logic to ADATS via MOTU 896HD

Greetings, I'm trying to load ADAT multi tracks into Logic Pro 8 via my MOTU 896HD. I've got the light pipe and ADAT sync cables connected and I'm getting eight tracks of audio at a time. No problem. My problem is syncing the next set of eight tracks with the first eight tracks. The only options I see in Logic for syncing is via MIDI. The 896 hasn't any MIDI at all. Yet my MOTU control panel gives me the ADAT Optical clock source, or the ADAT 9-pin options. I am unable to find those options in Logic. How can I slave Logic to my ADATS so I can load my ADATS in sync.?

If it's anything like the way the 896HD works with SMPTE, then Logic won't sync to it, as in when you press play on the ADAT Logic won't do anything. MOTU software will. You should still Sync to the ADAT optical, that will sync the clocks and stop things glitching and falling out of time.
What I suggest you do to keep the sets of 8 channels sync'd is what I'd normally do. It causes things to take a TINY bit longer but is fool proof.
    1. Record channels 1-8
    2. Record channels 1, and 9-15
    3. Record channels 1, and 16+
    4. Group your first 8 channels together in Logic, and the second set of 8 channels together, and the last 2 channels together.
    5. Use your 3 channel 1's to sync the 3 groups, this can be done with sample accuracy so although it's a little more work it's as good as using ADAT sync. It really doesn't take long.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.
Alternatively use AudioDesk which comes with your MOTU as that SHOULD work with ADAT sync.

  • Motu 896HD no output

  • MOTU 896HD and Logic 7.1 errors due to security update

Upon downloading of the latest os X security update, my MOTU 896HD will not work with logic Pro 7.1. Logic spits out the message "error synchronizing audio and MIDI", , not playing any audio (and when switched to 44.1kHz emitts a high pitched frequency) No matter what settings are changed, nothing changes. I tried deleting the logic preferences, still not working. I tried uninstalling the MOTU and reinstalling it, no go. I even uninstalled Logic completely and reinstalled it from scratch, still no go. I tried using the internal sound card in logic and it worked without any problem (through my crappy computer speakers), I also tried the MOTU through other software, such as iTunes and it works without any problem as well, just no matter what I do, it will not work in Logic. I have done everything possible to do that I know of other than a complete system wipe and reinstall, (which I hear from some others dealing with the same issue that this doesn't fix it). I have all of the latest drivers for the MOTU, and all software is up to date with the latest versions.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I am having the same issue and have been trying to track it down for days. I have been told you can reset the 896 by powering down, unplugging everything and switching the voltage switch back and forth (don’t leave it on the wrong voltage). I got this info from someone on Unicornation not MOTU. I don’t know if it’s accurate. It didn’t work for me but others seemed to have success.
Can you confirm there is firmware if you receive it? I have sent e-mails to MOTU and should have called them toady but got busy at work.
    Thanks,
    Damon

  • HELP!!!  MOTU 896HD suddenly not recognized!!!

I use Logic 8 with a MOTU 896HD. Set up and had a session last week, everything was smooth sailing. The next day, my computer wouldn't see the 896 at all. I have reinstalled the MOTU drivers and updated. I have even gone so far as to erase and reinstall my Mac OS and everything.
I've been on the phone with Mac, MOTU, and anyone else I can think of. I HAVE EVEN REPLACED THE MOTU, AND STILL NO RESULTS!!!
I am absolutely lost, and each day that goes by is a day that I'm losing income.
    Can anyone help?!?!?

I have tried everything I can think of and no luck.
I've done the P-Ram reset as instructed by Apple as well. If you could share the method for resetting the Firewire bus, that would be great. I've already done a P-Ram reset with Apple on the phone and no results there either.
Maybe I'm missing a step, so any info, no matter how random will be greatly appreciated.

  • Fire Wire Audio Devices (M-Audio, MOTU etc) - Problems

This problem is discussed already. But only in connection with Bootcamp.
Apparently, there is a problem with the new FW Controllers uses in newer Apple models. Opposed to the traditional Texas Instruments controller, the new one create problems with FW audio devices. There is a big discussion on the RME page on that (without conclusive result, however). But I think the problem is more general and needs to be addressed:
Here is my problem: New Macbook pro, my M-Audio FW 1814 worked at the beginning )only garage band= with the beta version of the OS X 10. 5 driver, but than failed. Updated driver of m-audio )released end of april, did not help. My apple seems to recognize the external device, the software mixer shows movements, but there is no sound whatsoever coming in or out. Same with MIDI.
My question: Did apple give any statement on the problem? A lot of customers buy apple for making music, after all.
    Cheers,
    P

Yes, if you setup an aggregate device in the Audio Midi setup of your Mac combining the two FW devices. Open the Device editor->press "new device"->name it->choose the available devices in the menue below->hit ok/done/"fertig" (in german)->select this new device in Logic preferences as your Audio device

  • I'd like to know how to output from LP 8 to a MOTU 896HD'S AES/EBU outputs

Never done this b4 and someone just asked me to provide a mix on DAT. can anyone help me out? i have a panasonic sv-3700
    thx in advance!
    fj

i guess i should try and be more specific:
i am going from a MBP thru to the MOTU using firewire. i see the MOTU's output meters moving only on the analog (main) outputs. i've connect the AES/EBU port via an XLR cable to the DAT machine. the DAT machine when i switch to digital in just blinks. i see no meters moving on the MOTU's AES/EBU outputs. i've run the audio setup, and regardless of whether the default output is set to AES/EBU or Main Out 1-2 the meters don'T move wheh i play the song.
if i set the clock source from "internal" to "AES/EBU" and start LP8 i get the clock LED on the MOTU blinking and LP8 gives me a message "Error while trying to synch Audio and MIDI" window.
i don't know what else to try. is there a way to just transfer the stereo mix over to the DAT another way? thx

  • Problems with Multi Track Audio Recording

I'm having difficulties getting Logic to record multiple audio tracks. Basically, I'm using a MOTU 896HD Firewire Interface and despite setting up audio objects in the environment window to receive from the relevant inputs and assigning those to tracks it doesn't seem to allow for each wave of audio to be recorded separately.
Last night I was trying to record 4 tracks - 2 vox and 2 guitars and had no luck. On the first two tracks it was recording identical waves with both vox and guitar together of one musician. And for tracks 3 and 4 it was recording the vox and guitar of the same musician in each track, like it should have done in tracks 1 and 2. It did not record the other musician's parts at all ignoring him altogether. I just don't understand because I tested each mic and guitar to check whether it was in fact receiving audio from the source and it worked fine when getting levels but when it came to recording everything messed up.
Can any of you kind people help me? I'm obviously doing something very wrong but cant for the life of me understand.....all thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Just thought I would let anyone who's reading this
topic know that I have resolved my issue, it was to
do with the Audio Configuration of Logic to the
inputs from the MOTU. I went to Logic>Audio>Audio
Configuration and configured it so that each track
    received from the respective inputs.

  • Noob needs help with Logic and Motu live setup.

    Hello everyone,
I'm a noob / semi noob who could use some help with a live setup using 2 MOTU 896HD's and Logic on a Mac.
    Here's the scenario:
I teach an outdoor marching percussion section (a drumline and a front ensemble of marimbas and vibes). We have an amazing setup of live sound to amplify and enhance the mallet percussion. There is a yamaha PA system with 2 subs and 2 mains which are routed through a rack unit that processes the overall PA balance. I'm pretty sure that the unit is supposed to avoid feedback and do an overall cross-over EQ of the sound. Other then that unit, we have 2 motu896hd units which are routed via fire-wire. I also have a coax cable routing the output of the secondary box to the input of the primary box (digital i/o which converts to ADAT in (i think?)..?
    Here's the confusion:
There are more then 8 inputs being used from the ensemble itself, so I need the 16 available inputs to be available in Logic. I was lead to believe that the 2nd motu unit would have to be sent digitally to the 1st motu unit via coax digital i/o. Once in Logic, however, I cannot find the signal or any input at all past the 8th input (of the 1st unit).
    Here's the goal:
All of my performers and inputs routed via firewire into a Mac Mini running OSX and Logic pro.
I want to be able to use MainStage and run different patches of effects / virt. instruments for a midi controller keyboard / etc.
I want to be able to EQ and balance the ensemble via Logic.
    Here's another question:
How much latency will I be dealing with? Would a mac mini with 4gb of ram be able to handle this load? With percussion, I obviously want the sound as latency free as possible. I also, however, want the flexibility of sound enhancement / modification that comes with Logic and the motu896hd units.
Any help would be REALLY appreciated. I need the routing assistance along with some direction as to whether or not this will work for this type of application. I'm pretty certain it does, as I have spoken with some other teachers in similar venues and they have been doing similar things using mac mini's / logic / mainstage / etc.
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

You'll definitely want to read the manual to make sure the 896HDs are connected together properly. ADAT is a little tricky, it's not just a matter of cabling them together. Go to motunation.com if you need more guidance on connecting multiple devices. Beyond that initial hookup, here are a couple of quick suggestions:
    1. Open CueMix and see if both devices are reported there. If not, your connections aren't correct. Be sure to select 44.1kHz as your sample rate, otherwise you are reducing the number of additional channels. For instance at 88.2kHz you would get half the additional channels via ADAT.
    2. You may need to create an aggregate device for the MacBook to recognize more than the first 896HD. Lots of help on this forum for how to do that. Again, first make sure you have the 896HDs connected together properly.
    3. As for latency with Mainstage on the Mini, no way to know until you try it. Generally MOTU is fantastic for low latency work but Mainstage is a question mark for a lot of users right now. If the Mini can't cut the mustard, you have a great excuse to upgrade to a MacBook Pro.

  • What's wrong with my motu traveler ??

    HI
Since I instaled my new motu traveler interface on my computer, I have midi problem of any kind... bad timing ;like play on time and records before the cursor's line... Latensy and so on.
1)Does thoes problems also occur on logic ???.
Cause guess what ! I'm struggling with a PC !!(cubase/pc)
The reason I'm asking is because I'm switching to mac/logic
and figure that these problems will go away with my pc ,
2)or cubase is the problem ???.
I went back with my old midi PCI card and everything is back to normal.
3)does motu has problems working with PCs ???
    Please answer my 3 questions.
    thanks

And, occasionally it will boot into open firmware.
Seems odd to me. All by itself? Did you press any keys?
I don't know what to do from here. I can still boot into os 8.6 with extensions off.
Most likely, you have a bad extension. They are in a folder called extensions What you need to do is create a new folder and move extensions to this folder. Move extensions to the folder in groups. try 1/2 first. Move back & forth between folders. See which extension is causing the problem. command + n to create a new folder
verify that you have the correct firmware.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
    2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.
    Apple -> About This Mac
click on the More Info... tab
    click on Hardware
    read the Boot ROM Version
    3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
The 4.1.9f1 will be different on a 333 machine.
    What firmware do you need?

    What can it be?
    Thanks a lot,
    Best Regards,

The info is linked above. I agree that that info should be on the download page, but not having that info there doesn't mean the drivers aren't 64 bit.
    http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/64-bit-mac-compatibility
    Hardware
When using the 64-bit kernel in Mac OS X v10.6 and later, 64-bit hardware drivers must be used. MOTU FireWire/USB2 audio interfaces, PCI-424 audio interfaces, and USB MIDI interfaces can be used with the 32- or 64-bit kernel. *The minimum driver versions required for use with the 64-bit kernel are:*
    *FireWire/USB2 Audio 1.5 (37320)*
    PCI-424 Audio 1.5 (38352)
    USB MIDI 1.5 (37320)
The current version available for download (after you log in) is 1.5.38352, so according to MOTU it is a 64 bit driver and runs on the 64 bit kernel.
Download here, you may need to log in. Forget about the two pages you linked to, I'm not sure how you found them, but they are old and are no longer relevant. http://www.motu.com/download/downloadmatching_downloads.html?platform_id=2&productid=14
The link to the download itself is here, again this link may not work if you don't log in first.
    http://s3.amazonaws.com/motu/downloads/firewire/MOTUAudioInstaller-1.5.38352.zip
I downloaded the latest and tested it on 64 bit kernel and it worked fine, so yes, they are in fact 64 bit drivers. If you are still skeptical, just download for yourself and boot into the 64 bit kernel, you'll see that they work fine.
