"mount: only root can mount" or "Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS"

I'm trying to set up an NTFS partition to use as a common data partition between Arch and Windows. I have it added to fstab so that any user in the ntfsuser group can have access to it, but if it gets unmounted accidentally from the "eject" symbol in the nautilus gui, you have to sudo to mount it back up. Is there a way for it to be remounted automatically when you click on the partition again in Nautilus? I've searched all through the forums and looked through several articles on the wiki but haven't been able to come up with anything. The error I get says
mount: only root can mount /dev/sda4 on /home/adam/UserData
I've tried adding the users option to fstab, but that only manages to change the error to
Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE
library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated
FUSE support and make it setuid root. Please see more information at
http://ntfs-3g.org/support.html#unprivileged
I've tried the suggestions at the link in the error, as well as tried the solutions given in [solved] Gnome : mounting NTFS partition as user and a few other posts, but still nothing. If possible, I'd prefer to stay away from the users option in fstab, since it adds a redundant link to the sidebar in nautilus with a different name.

@Mr.Elendig: It is mounted through fstab normally, but in nautilus there's an eject icon on the sidebar next to the name of the drive which I've accidentally clicked on a couple times if I'm just trying to open the drive real quick. Once its been unmounted like that it won't let me remount unless I use sudo. I'm just looking for something to make it a little more convenient than having to pop open a cli and type in a password.
I'll try the suid root when I get home tonight, otherwise I'll look into autofs.

iCloud should still help you reduce some hard drive space. Just select "optimize" in the icloud tab in Mac Photo App preferences.
Granted, not the same as completely offloading your library to a back-up drive at your location.
    Good Luck!

That setting is only related to iMessage. It causes iMessages to be resent as SMS if iMessage fails.

  • Can I just limit user can only modify the x value of a point?

In my effect, I add a point by using PF_ADD_POINT. But I just want user can only modify the x value, is this possible? How can I do it?

hello shibin.chris! welcome to the forum!
well, there's no switch you can flip to have such behavior, but you can:
    1. supervise the param, so whenever the user changes the value you can keep
the X and restore the Y. (won't hold water in case of keyframing or
    expression)
    2. set an expression that would do the same.
    3. check the param at some events (such as the render call), and modify the
keyframes and values if necessary. (won't handle expressions)
that's all i can think of.

  • Can connect to Mac users, but not Windows.

I have been able to connect to other Mac users signed onto AIM accounts in iChat, but not Windows users signed onto AIM. Help with this problem would be greatly appreciated, as I am at college and away from all my loved ones, and desperately want to chat with them.

    Hi,
I am sorry that only 2 hours and 15 minutes left you disappointed.
    Some things to consider.
    1) they have to be on XP.
    2) they have to be using AIM 5.9 or Trillian Pro
    3) if they use AIM 5.9 they have to Tune the Camera and Mic to the Application. See message 570 in that link (Access to these preferences in in the My AIM menu now or use F3)
    4) Whichever App they use it has to be Enabled through the XP firewall. IF at Service Pack 2 they need these instructions an earlier version of XP has to have the Firewall disabled.

The ports that iChat uses have to be opened at your end although it sounds like they are.
The port for AIM/Trillian have to opened in their modem at their end.

  • Only root user can login, Please help

Hi all, Iam new to solaris.
I installed solaris 10 and configured SSH service.
only root can login to console throught GUI let it be JDE or CDE while other users can't.
Other users can only login through SSH or through command line prompt( before the GUI starts).
    Please help.
    Thanks.

Well, the GUI read/writes a lot of configuration files and otherfiles in your HOME directory, if it failes doing so the different services which makes the GUI fails to function and it will exit.
The users can probably login through the GUI even if they don't have a proper $HOME if they choose the Option->Session->Failsafe session.

  • Why can't I install Firefox as an unprivileged user?

I can't install Firefox without letting it alter my system. I can install all other browsers as an unprivileged user, but not Firefox.

Did you try your solution? As soon as I cancel UAC prompt, installation aborts. I can't start installation without it showing UAC prompt. Thus I can't choose path to install browser. You know, all other browsers allow to choose installation type between "All users" and "Current user". While "All users" type requires admin rights and UAC prompt appears if user chooses it, "Current user" does not require admin rights, so no UAC prompt appears if user chooses this type. With Firefox I am not given the choice. It requires admin rights as soon as installation is launched. It even ignores set __COMPAT_LAYER=RunAsInvoker environment variable.

  • How to make external devices (like iPods, etc.) NOT mount as connected drives when plugged in via USB to a Mac?

If I plug my iPod (or a thumb drive or whatever) to my Mac's USB port, the device appears as a icon representing a connected drive on my Mac's Desktop.
    This is normal, expected behavior.
HOWEVER, in some cases, I'd prefer that the device not "mount" as a connected external drive.
With thumb drives or external USB drive, of course, I want them to "mount" so I can transfer files on or off them -- that would be the only possible reason to connect an external drive like that.
But with other Apple devices like iPods or iPhones, there are TWO possible reasons to connect them to a Mac: either to "sync" them or transfer files on/off them; OR, to simply recharge the device's battery. (Or, both sync and recharging functions at once.)
For those people who use their Apple devices in ways that require transferring files (i.e. most people), then having the device "mount" as a connected device is a desirable behavior.
But in my circumstance (and I bet there are a lot of people in a similar circumstance), I have no need or desire to transfer any data to or from my device every time I plug it into my Mac: I'm plugging it in SOLELY to recharge the device's battery.
Specifically, in my case, I have a 6th-gen iPod Nano, and I use it exclusively as an FM radio and a pedometer. I don't have any mp3s or songs or any other external files loaded on it, nor do I plan to add any in the future.
The only reason I ever plug it into my Mac is so that I can recharge the iPod's battery.
But the "problem," which is a minor one I admit but a problem nonetheless, is that every time I connect the iPod to the Mac, the iPod appears as a "connected drive" icon on my Mac's desktop. Which means that I'm not supposed to just unplug the iPod  when I'm done -- first, I have to find its icon on the Mac Desktop, and then drag the icon to the Trash, to "unmount" it -- and only then can I freely unplug the iPod without getting an error message telling me that I shouldn't just disconnect connected drives without first properly unmounting them.
This would be bothersome enough if I only had to do it once per connection, but in the case of the iPod Nano, there's no way to tell how recharged it is while it is in the act of recharging, so that to see if I'm "done," I have to unplug it, check the battery status, and if it's not fully charged, re-plug it back in. So that each time I recharge it, I often have to unmount the drive several times, depending on how impatient I am.
There has to be a way to prevent the mounting of the drives of devices that one is connecting simply for the purpose of recharging. But how?
Strangely, I also have an old iPhone, and when I plug that in for recharging in the same way, it DOESN'T appear as a connected drive on the Desktop. I'm not sure how I managed to do this, but long ago I must have changed some setting or preference for this to happen. And by now I've forgotten what I did.
I'd prefer that I could change the "mount/don't-mount" setting on a device-by-device basis -- i.e. make it such that this particular iPod doesn't load, but perhaps a different iPod would load -- but if that's not possible, then is there a way to stop ALL iPods and iPhones from loading as connected drives when plugged in?
(I'm not talking about appearing as connected drives within iTunes -- I'm talking about appearing as an icon on the Desktop in the Finder.)
And please don't tell me to just buy a wall charger! I prefer to recharge off my computer if possible, using the charging cord that came with the iPod.
I presume there's some simple setting to toggle this on or off, but I haven't yet found it. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I already know about that Finder Preferences option, but that is not what I'm looking for. Why not? Because I still need CDs and DVDs to appear on the Desktop and mount properly! If I uncheck the "CDs, DVDs and iPods" option, then I lose the ability to access CDs and DVDs, which creates a whole new problem for me. What I want is to not mount iPods only -- actually, what I really want is to not mount this particular iPod -- but if that level of specificity is not possible, then I want to exclude just iPods from mounting, without also condemning CDs and DVDs (or whatever) to invisibility.
Also, I was confused by the way the Preference is worded: It says "Show these items on the Desktop," with a series of options to check. But this phraseology seems to mean that the unchecked items will still "mount," they simply won't appear as Desktop icons. One would still have to "Eject" them using a menu command, rather than dragging the icon to the Trash -- right? Or am I mistaken, and is the Preference Pane simply badly worded, and when they say "Show these items on the Desktop," what they really mean is "mount these external devices as connected drives." So that if a category is unchecked, then they won't load as external drives at all?
But if so, then what purpose could possibly be served by inserting a CD or DVD that is not recognized by the computer? And if it isn't recognized, then it would seem that there would be no way to ever Eject the CD or DVD disk. Right?
Thus, if I uncheck that Finder Preference box you suggest, one of two outcomes will result:
-- Either CD, DVDs and iPods are still mounted, they just won't appear as icons on the Desktop; but they would still need to be Ejected via a menu command, which doesn't solve my problem.
-- Or, CDs, DVDs and iPods are not mounted or recognized by the computer at all, which means that if I insert a disk into the disk drive, it will get stuck there forever, since there's no way to Eject it, since the OS doesn't recognize that it's even there. Which is thereby a new problem.
Either way, I'd have a problem! Or...? Clarification, anyone?

  • Oddball client not mounting XSan Volumes

Background: My client, a TV News broadcast station, had Apple and a third-party design and install a Apple based XSan storage and network. They ran all new fiber and gigabit ethernet to each station to use the XSan. It has been working great, with the exception noted below.
Setup: 2 MD Controllers, 1 XServe, 4 XRaids, each make up two 2 large TB volumes (raid 5, stripped together).
XServe, XRAID, MD controllers, and all clients are all connected together on a Fibre and Fiber Optic network using QLogic switches. SUBNET: 10.200.1.x.
Ethernet Network, also connected all the above together on HP Gigabit Switches. SUBNET: 10.100.1.x The public WAN is made available on this subnet by a connection to the HP switches. Still getting details on how this was done.
Everything is running OS X 10.4.8 or better, XSan File System 1.4.
    Setup
There are 8 workstations (edit bays) that act as infusion and editing stations. Each station has two XSans volumes mounted NEWS01 and NEWS02. They have the odd numbered bays use NEWS01 and the even numbered bays use NEW02.
    PROBLEM
All bays mount the XSan volumes, except one. FCP08 will not mount the XSan volumes. We have rebooted the workstation, and even went to the extreme of shutting down the entire setup all bays and MD controllers, File Servers, etc.. then bringing everything backup up. Same problem.
Based on some forum discussion, we have tried the following:
    * Ensured that there is no empty mount point in /Volumes
    * Uninstalled all XSan Software and resinstalled v1.4 from Apple's website.
    * Removed the client from the XSan Admin, and readded it, made sure to enter valid serial number, etc..
    * Verified that all fibers are working, all link lights look good, and you can ping across the MD network.
When you use the XSan admin from either FCP08 (edit bay 08) or from the server, and you add both MD XSans to it, you see the client, and you click on the client and click either Mount (read-only) or Mount (Read/write).
It will show "Mounting..." and then it will flip back to "not mounted". The only feedback we have received so far is "ACCESS DENIED". All affinity setting are set to rwxrwxrwx (wide open), and all the volumes and workstation logins all have the same access to the volumes. I can not find any restrictive permissions anywhere.
I plan on trying to move them away from a /etc/hosts type setup to a proper DNS Server running on their XServe using the DNS Server function of OS X Server. But currently all edit bay stations have the same /etc/hosts file installed, which accounts for MD and ethernet networks.
ANY IDEAS what is wrong with this workstation? With the setup?
I have had extreme ideas from some who have said that we need to blitz the entire client, and reinstall the operating system. I am not willing to go down that route, since each edit bay was built manually without an image (another aspect I will remedying soon). It will take sometime to rebuild this edit bay client if I that is the only solution.
The only this question I have if that is the popular opinion, is what is different from a client OS install and the existing one regarding the XSan? This are edit bays, not private workstations, and no one installs any extra software or surfs the net, etc.. They are used for ingest and editing only.
    HELP!
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi,
You could check if it is Fibre Channel related:
    from a terminal do a cvlabel -l
this should give you a list of the lun's in your volume.
When this tool does not show luns, you might have a zoning issue.

  • [SOLVED] My /home and /boot partition show on my desktop; not mounted

I'm guessing these two fie systems aren't mounted  and the computer is seeing them as separate volumes?
So I guess I made a mistake during the install. This kind of explains a few things because when updating my kernel GRUB wasn't being updated as if the /boot partition wasn't mounted. I had to completely reinstall GRUB to have it point to the right kernel.
Is there a way to fix this and get these mounted how they need to be? Probably something with my fstab file?
When I installed I mounted my root, created /mnt/boot and /mnt/home, then mounted those to their own partitions that I had created.
I generated my fstab and checked it, and everything looked fine. I just don't know why everything else is just fine, but /boot and /home aren't mounted?
My partition scheme is GPT and looks like
    /dev/sda1 -- bios boot
    /dev/sda2 -- /boot
    /dev/sda3 -- /
    /dev/sda4 -- /swap
    /dev/sda5 -- /home
I used UUIDs if that makes any difference.
    Thanks.

All right. I did what bstaletic said, and performed option 3 of his suggestions. My fstab file is restored but now when I start lightdm I get to my login screen, login, and have a black screen with just a cursor. All I did was run the install media, mount each partition (starting with root first). Then I turned my swap on.
    After that, I ran
    genfstab -U -p /mnt > fstab
I checked the fstab file, it looked like this
    # /dev/sda3
    UUID=c2d39ee2-e1c4-4989-9937-91fad2951d67 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=9cd92417-c4c0-40c7-9de3-3b65b896e36b /boot ext2 rw,relatime 0 2
    # /dev/sda5
    UUID=db8633d3f-0cb2-49dc-9792-356ad37ace58 /home ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 2
    # /dev/sda4
    UUID=00d4f1cd-cc6c-4dd3-B4c7-67da333205ea none swap defaults 0 0
So I unmouted everything and turned swap off and went back into my system. The fstab file matched the output above. I started lightdm so i could get into xfce to see if the volumes were no longer on my desktop. However, now I get a black screen with a cursor. I let it sit for a while, but I ended up going into a tty and rebooting. Same issue. Black screen and cursor. I can see and login to lightdm just fine, but not my xfce DE.
I did try reinstalling lightDM and xfce4 and xfce4-goodies. Not xorg though. I'll try reinstallign it and see what that does.

  • Restricting what users can send mail to off-site destinations

How can i restrict what users can and can not send mail outside mi local domain ?? Without editing postfix ??
    Tx

Without editing postfix? pretty much impossible.
Anything you do is going to change posftix's confguration, and you're asking for options beyond Apple's Server Admin GUI, therefore you going to have to do some under-the-hood tweaking of postfix.
(just to be pedantic, using Server Admin ultimately edits postfix's configuration files, so what's your reluctance here?)
As for your request, there are so many ways of implementing this. The 'right' option depends on more details than you've specified. For example, how are you determining which users can/cannot send outside mail? Is it a fairly static list, or does it change frequently?
The only option that comes close to not editing postfix is authentication. By default, only authenticated users can send outgoing mail, but anyone can send mail to a local address on the server, so that gives you a simple approach - have the permitted users configure their mail client with a username and password for SMTP, and have the non-permitted users leave the SMTP username/password empty.
That's hardly foolproof, though - if any 'non-permitted' user enters their username and password they automatically fall into the 'permitted' group. That may or may not be sufficient for your need.
There are other options, though, including IP address range checking, a permitted senders list, port options, and more. It's just a matter of how much you want to tweak postfix's configuration.

  • Internal boot drive not mounted -- Mac does not restart

    Hi everyone,
    I've got a problem with my  2013 MacBookPro 13" with OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
It seems that somethings wrong with my internal boot drive. I wanted to start my Mac but the grey progress line stopped at about the half and didn't continue. I tried to boot in secured mode --> not possible. I loaded recovery mode and wanted to check and repair disk utilities but I cannot hit those buttons because my drive is not mounted and cannot be mounted. I also tried to connect my Mac via Firewire with another Mac in Target Disk Mode --> Drive could not be mounted. Finally I tried to mount my drive on a Windows and Linux computer --> not mounted :-(
Is there another possibility to mount my drive or to access my data somehow? The thing is that I do not have a backup and that is why I need to access my data and store them somewhere prior being able to do a clean reinstall of my Mac.
    Thank you for your support.
    Markus

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and try to repair the disk and disk permissions. If you're able to reboot normally and see that works.
If not reboot into the Recovery volume and reinstall the system.
If you can't boot into the Recovery volume mamau08 may be right in that the drive has failed.
