  • Dual boot drive - Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard - Correct order to load software /apps?

    Hi
I want to create a dual boot drive for Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard as some of my hardware (is not supported in Mountain Lion).
I am happy how to do this, I just want to know if there is a correct way to install software and apps.
My plan was to do a clean install of both using two partitions, the larger going to ML and smaller one for SL.  I was going to install SL from the DVD and then after updating from 10.6. to 10.6.8 and download ML from the app store and install on the larger partition.
Do I install all the software I use like Final Cut, Aperture, iLife (for Garageband) etc on the ML or SL partition or on both.  Also, is there a better way / practise of the order software updates / apps and boxed software should be installed when doing a clean machine install.
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

    Thanks mende1
So, if I have software I need to use on both ML and SL - for example Final Cut as I have a Canopus AVDC box which is not supported in ML but only SL, do I need to install the same software in both OS?
I usually open apps using spotlight and didn't know if it would software / apps would open if already installed on the other partition?
    Thanks again

  • Mountain Lion and Flash CS6

Wondering if I can get some clarification on an issue i'm having with Flash CS6 and mountain lion 10.8.3:
I recently purchased a 27" iMac i7 3.4Ghz 16Gram for use as a work machine running Flash CS6.  However any time I open any .fla (flash file) larger than 50m the application crashes to desktop.  I have searched the adobe communities and it seems that Flash CS6 is listed as incompatible with Mountain Lion, however many people run it without issues.
My question is this:  is Flash CS6 truly incompatible with the Mountain Lion os?  if so is there a way to reinstall a previous version of os x that is compatible with flash (snow leopard, lion) while I wait for the compatibility issue to be fixed?  Is there a current workaround for Flash CS6 on mountain lion that will allow me to manage large files?
I have attempted to run flash both with the most recent java 7 17 and java 6 43, I have tried it without the adobe flash update 2 and without, and I have adjusted the java heap space.  none of these attempts has resulted in any improvement.  I can open and create new files without any problem, but the inability to handle any file over ~50m severly limits my ability to work in OS X Mountain Lion and makes working on my current project impossible.
I appreciate any help anyone can give me or even just an answer to my question about compatibility as I was very excited to upgrade to the mac hardware for device testing and the xcode goodies integrated with CS6 and now I find myself stuck having to return to my old and less than ideal hardware spec (not to mention the cost of the new iMac that now cannot be used for my current project).
    Thank you for your time.

Yep -- you're describing the EXACT issue that Adobe warns of on their incompatibility notice.

Guess it's a good thing that Flash is dying.......because even 10 months after a new OS release, Adobe has no word on fixes.

  • Mountain Lion and Image Processor

Found out on a brand new install of Mountain Lion and Adobe Photoshop CS6 that Image processor will not save any othe images processed.  Anybody else have this problem or anyone test this out for me??  Also is there a work around to this issue?

Well, you adopted Mountain Lion on the very first day it became available.  Talk about early adopters!
Apple doesn't seem to get new major versions of OS X right until about the sixth dot-dot release.  That's why Lion wasn't and isn't reliable even at 10.7.4.
I'm sticking to Tiger 10.4.11 on my main Power Mac and have rigged a minimal Snow Leopard 10.6.8 system just to run ACR 7.x hosted by Photoshop 13 ("CS6").
Leopard 10.5.x was awful, not just in dropping Classic Support but also in totally killing SCSI support.
The two Lions are mainly concerned with compatibility with mobile devices like the iPad and the iPhone.
The future of the desktop Mac as a serious computing platform seems doomed.

You'll need to upgrade to Parallels Desktop 7 to regain compatibility.  Good luck....

  • Re-install mountain lion and customize

    Hello all,
I tried searching for an existing answer to my question but could not find one.
I just bought a new Macbook Air and I was wondering if there is an option to re-install the OS (Mountain Lion) with customization.
The macbook air with no apps or data migrated from other computer says there is around 12GB of "Other" Stuff on my hard drive.
If I put my mac in recovery mode with command -R, will I have an option to install what programs/apps I want rather than Mountain Lion installing Garageband and iMovie for me when I rarely use them.
    Thanks in advance.

I think I found the problem.  Check out this post:-

  • How to get rid of Mountain Lion and set up Lion again?

Cant set up Lion and get rid of Mountain Lion, some of my programs dont work with ML. Help pleas.

Why not try fixing what you have? First thing to do is identify whether your third-party software is compatible by checking here: App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.
Now, my preference is to start from scratch meaning erase the drive and reinstall Mountain Lion. That way you start from a stable beginning. Then install third-party software one at a time in order to verify it works properly. I don't know if that's something you are willing to do. So what I suggest you do is just reinstall Mountain Lion without erasing the drive:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Did you try to open teh fle by double-clicking its icon? If the file was made with an older version of Office, you may get that message. Try opeing PP and, from its "File" menu, see if you can open the ppt. I've foundthat often gets around that message and then yo ucan save the file from the newer version.
If that doesn't work, consider asking in the Microsoft Office: Mac forums here:
    Office for Mac forums
PowerPoint is not an Apple product and it seems a lot of people around here avoid Office.

  • Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive.

Can I purchase Mountain Lion and make a flash drive bootable? I do not want to install it on my Macbook Pro. I have Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro now, and due to my hard drive needing repair, I need to boot off of another source, like my flash drive. I am in Paris and my Snow Leopard DVD is in Texas.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

I updated my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and now it is slow in starting up and loads a number of probrams. How can I fix the problem?

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the slowness still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.
    Reboot normally and test.

I just have just downloaded Mountain lion and I wanted to listen to music on my computer screen with my HDMI cable plug into my back of my screen and I wanted to talk to dictation on my regular standard iPhone headphone and I was wondering if it's all possible change your settings Mac Mini to set it so you can listen to those both like your headphones and use the mic in your headphones and there's no settings that would change in the Mac Mini so do there is a flaw in this system or I am just really really really really dumb.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

updated my mac to mountain lion 10.7.8.3 and now my app store, mail or facetime won't open. Also, I am not longer able to play videos through firefox. I tried downloading the combo for mountain lion and it refuses to install saying that I need to see developer. Whenever I try to open my appstore, mail or facetime it says that the programmes need to be installed and might not be compatible with this version of mac operating system. Can anyone help me?

It's not a bad install of Mountain Lion. I've had the same thing happen to me, but it affected not only Mail, but a variety of other programs including iPhoto and MS Office, where I had to delete preferences, caches, and reinstall the OS as well as the program itself. I'm still having issues with Mail, so I've gone to another program.
Everything was fine upon the initial install. I restarted my iMac about two weeks after the install, and that's when the issues began to happen. I've reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, but the same issues arise.
As I mentioned above, you'll need to figure out which preferences are causing the issue, then reinstall the program, as a fresh reinstallation will do you no good unless you wipe the drive completely.
Here's a thread that helped me with iPhoto:

That is, I cannot log in, sleep, restart, or shut down. I am running it on an Early 2009 Macbook Pro, which is said to have the capabilities of running Mountain Lion.

As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

  • I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now I can't use any of my software!

What a disaster and huge mistake.  Upgraded to Mountain Lion and now I can't run Autocad 2012 for Mac, any of my Adobe Creative suites software such as Photoshop, Illustrator.. and now I can't even do upgrades because Mountain Lion doesn't allow me to launch DMGs.  I've lost thousands of $'s in software, not to mention time, but most importantly now I can't even work!  I just tried to revert back to Snow Leopard by intalling it back in my hard drive and it won't let me.  I never used Time Machine.  Is there any way on earth I can revert back to my old operating software???  Please help.  And if you haven't upgraded yet and are thinking about it.  BEWARE - and don't do it.  I've been reading that Mountain Lion isn't working with Microsoft applications either.  Omy...I haven't even checked that.
and of course no one at Apple support can or will help me

It's not my Microsoft that I use much or am worried about.  I can't run AutoCAD.  and I can't update AutoCAD either.  When I try to mount an update just to get it working, it says it can't run the DMG file.  Apparantly this new platform doesn't use Rosetta - which is needed to run any of these updates or downloads.  ***?  and then When I try to open CS4 appliations - Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign - I get the message "Licensing for this product has stopped working - Error 150:30 - ***?
So basically I can't use ANY of the programs I ran before.  And yes I have googled desperately all day.  Adobe has some suggestions - like deleting a Flex files - which I did...Defragmenting - which I did.  And most importantly provides am Adobe Licensing Repair tool to fix - which I can't open because Mountain Lion won't mount the DMG in order to run it!  It's a complete disaster and I don't have the money or time to purchase and or reinstall everything.  I am just screwed.
No you are not, calm down, cbs20 already gave you the answer on opening dmg files, updates are available for most of your programs and I assume you have licenses for the Adobe products. AutoCad you'll have to wait for.
And please .... Start Backing Things Up, you could lose it all without one, work included.
