Mouse clicks in Safari sometimes unresponsive

Hello all. I am having an infuriating issue with Safari 4.0.3. When I click near (but just miss) a button in the Safari toolbar (like the "home" button), then when I move my mouse and actually hit the button, the click will not register. I can sit there and click away merrily and it will not work. The button will not change colors and the click will not register. What I need to do is move the mouse far away from what I'm trying to click (like I have to "reset" it), then move it back and click to get the mouseclick to register.
It also happens with bookmark bar links and tab close buttons.
It is infuriating to just miss a button, click, move the mouse to the right place, and not be able to click the button (or bookmarks bar item or tab close X). Has anyone else had this problem? (P.S.: Now that it's so noticeable, it happens WAY more often than I thought!)
I tend to doubt it is a mouse or driver issue since it only occurs in Safari, no other program.
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Here is some more info that might help (and is 100% reproducible):
If I click on a folder in the Bookmarks Bar, the links in that folder come up. Now, if I don't select anything, but instead mouse over a different item on the Bookmarks Bar, I can not select that item. What should happen is that the first click makes the links from the original folder disappear, and the second click should actually click the new link. But no amount of clicks will work. I have to click somewhere else to change the focus, then come back and click on the link.
This also happens if I open a folder in the Bookmarks Bar, and then try to click on a button (like the Home button) or a tab.

  • No right mouse click in Safari?

    Hi-
    When I right mouse click (Mighty Mouse) in Safari no popup appears. (The one that would have "Back" - "Forwar" - "Reload", etc.)
    In Firefox right mouse click brings up this popup as does IE.
    Am I missing something, can I get this to work in Safari?
    Cheers,
    D.

    What happens if you control-left-click. This should bring up the same contextual menu as a right-click. If that doesn't work then I would try creating a new user account, launch Safari from that account and try the right-click. If the new user account works then you have a corruption issue in your own account. There is no option in Safari to turn this action on or off. Contextual menus are part of the operating system itself.
    I have found that the right-click menu in Safari depends on where your cursor is when you right-click. If I right-click over graphic areas I sometimes get a different menu relating to images or graphics.

  • Mouse 'clicks' itself! Help!

    My Macbook's "mouse" clicks itself!
    Sometimes when I'm typing, my Macbook's "mouse" will click itself and put the cursor wherever the mouse happens to be at the time. If it is behind it, it highlights everything I have already typed, and when I type the next letter, it all gets deleted. This is getting ridiculous. Help?
    It is NOT set to "tap to click," it just sometimes randomly clicks itself.
    I'm not the only one with this issue (someone over on Yahoo forums has the same).
    Help?

    Hi loveistheonlyway and welcome to Apple Discussions!
    It sounds very much like you have a hardware issue with your MacBook. If it is still under warranty or if you purchase an AppleCare Protection Plan, contact Apple (800-275-2273) and see about getting a repair set up. Alternatively you can carry the MacBook in to an Apple retail store for the repair. Be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar> first as otherwise you may spend a long time waiting to talk to a Mac Genius.
    You can do the same things if you are out of warranty, but you may have to pay for the repair.
    Best of luck.

  • Erratic Mouse Clicking

    I have an iBook G4/933. Mouse click will work sometimes after booting up but only briefly and loses function seemingly without any pattern. I have booted with a Tiger disc and the mouse click works briefly, if at all, regardless of internal or external mouse. Have managed to repair permissions and repair hard disk while booted from CD. Have used an external "known good" Apple USB mouse and doesn't help. Have also zapped PRAM and reset PMU multiple times and no help. I can't blame a faulty OS install if the mouse isn't functioning properly while booted from Tiger install disc. If the internal clicker is to blame and is bad, would that also disable an external USB mouse click? I'm really stumped on this one and any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    There is an Apple article that might be of help:
    Portables: Jumpy or erratic trackpad
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=17228
    See if any of the suggestions in this article are helpful.
    I don't know to what extent trackpad problems would affect the external mouse. But you could go to System Preferences>Keyboard and Mouse>Trackpad and check the box that says "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present" and see if that will at least let you use an external mouse.
    Please post back if none of this helps.
    Good luck!

  • Issues with mouse clicks/jumps after using CleanMyMac App.

    Since using this app. my hitherto slightly slow responding iMac has required multiple mouse clicks and is less/unresponsive.
    Anyone else used this software?
    As yet have not approached CleanMy Mac.
    I have reinstalled Mountain Lion (download) not clean install.
    Any suggestions? Is there a separate app for mouse that I can reload. Im guessing a minor chunk of code was deleted along with rubbish.

    Uninstall CleanMyMac and do not reinstall it.
    CleanMyMac is one of a broad category of time- and money-wasters capable of causing system corruption that can only be rectified by reinstalling OS X, restoring from a backup, or completely erasing your system and rebuilding it from the ground up. Get rid of it and test your Mac for operation. If it does not perform normally, the possibility that Cleanmymac resulted in system corruption must be considered.
    The vast majority of Mac problems reported on this site are the direct result of having used garbage like that. Never install such junk on a Mac.

    Just bought brand new new iMac. When browsing in Safari, sometimes the text suddenly gets super large. I'm doing nothing except reading the screen, tho I usually have my hand resting lightly on the mouse. I can get back to normal size by clicking "actual size" in View. But then it does it again a minute or two later. What gives? Something seems defective--but what?

    From System Preferences, Mouse, Point & Click, Secondary click.  Go to it hover over Secondary click and watch the short video sequence change it left right, left right, you will see exactly what is does. No I do not think your Mouse is defective, you simply need to take control of your Mouse finger.

  • Safari not scrolling & sometimes unresponsive

    Recently on my Intel iMac (but also on my Mac Book Pro) safari has had a couple of problems;
    1. Scrolling stops working at all - the only way around it is to refresh the page you are on.  It appears to be at random (in that I haven't found a common time or website that it happens to).
    2. Mainly on 'app' style / heavy websites (HTML5 etc), safari becomes unresponsive in the sense that you can't click on clickable items.  The mouse pointer doesn't turn into the hand which usually signifies something is clickable.  This is generally resolved by restarting safari, or simply reloading the page.
    I don't know if they are related, but it's becoming a real problem.  Has anyone got any way to fix this?
    I'm using Lion 10.7.3 on the iMac.
    Thanks in advance
    Ewan

    Hi Everyone, I have just updated my Mac to 10.9.1 this morning and since the update, I am having issues with Apple's Magic Mouse. Everything seems to work fine but clicking is very unresponsive and I now have to click 5 - 6 times before a "left or right" mouse click is actioned.

  • USB Mouse clicks get registered twice, sometimes

    Hello all
    I am using Arch Linux on my Thinkpad T61, and I usually have a USB mouse hooked up to it (Logitech Nano).
    A while ago I started to do some tweaks in order to enable the Synaptics TouchPad and get proper scrolling behaviour on the TrackPoint. However, I must have done something, because ever since, many of my USB mouse clicks get registered as a double click (not always, but often).
    I started doing some troubleshooting today, by commenting out parts of my xorg.conf file (I use evdev hotplugging, but I tought maybe Xorg was registering my mouse aswell) and I even booted up without an xorg.conf once, to no avail. The problem definately does not lie there.
    The only policy file I have that has anything to do with a mouse is /etc/hal/fdi/policy/mouse-wheel.fdi.

    This looks pretty bad to me... The USB reciever is listed once as a mouse and once as a keyboard. Something went very awry here. This is the output after a fresh boot without xf86-input-mouse installed. The only remaining input drivers I have left from xf86 are:

    Aha! After some Googling and hooking up the mouse on a Windows XP machine, I noticed that this is a problem with this specific mouse. Under Windows XP, I get the same behaviour (often a double click, sometimes no click at all). It seems it is time to find the warranty papers for this baby. In case anyone ever reads this, this happened to me on a Logitech VX Nano, after about 5-10months of usage (I don't recall when I bought it exactly).

    I have had Safari crash in one instance. And, other times it is very, very sluggish while typing a post to Facebook. I had Safari become unresponsive this afternoon, and eventually the whole system became unresponsive. I ended up having to do a power down and power up to clear the system.
    Anyone got some suggestions?  This behavior came about since the 10.8.1 update.

    The fact that the Time and Date settings are messed up tells me a totally different battery needs replacing.   There are in fact two batteries on every notebook.  The one that is a regular charging battery that frequently lasts anywhere from a year and a half to longer.  But then there is a battery that controls the system clock known as the PRAM battery.  It is this latter battery which also speaks to the firmware of the computer.    That's one which often starts losing its charge after 4 years.   You are closed to that stage now, and depending on the use of your computer, you might speed its demise.  You have to understand how all batteries work on the computers from http://www.apple.com/batteries/   Apple can replace the PRAM battery, and verify your firmware is correctly up to date.    By the way, I agree making a clone is preferable to Time Machine, as you can't really boot from a Time Machine backup.  Until your PRAM battery is replaced I think you will continue to have problems.

  • Unresponsive mouse clicks

    Since installing Snow Leopard I have used four different mice. All have responded poorly (as if clicks are weak) and often requires several clicks to get action . Occasionally the mouse click just does work at all and I have to give up. This did not happen in Leopard.

    Works fine here with the mighty mouse. Since you didn't ID yours, there's only guessing left. BTW, close your duplicate post.

  • Automator - How do I: Mouse Click, Move Windows, and more

    Hello,
    I am attempting to create my own Automator programs and for a while I had some that worked nicely. I have recently been tweaking my iMac so that it can "think" on its own (by automator of course) and do things for me. However, I've run across a block with Mavericks (I believe it's due to Mavericks).
    1. How can I get Automator to register a mouse click? "Watch me do" does not seem to want to work for me at all. I also would prefer if it would just be a registered mouse click, but not actually use the mouse (I know this is possible) so that if I'm doing something and it runs, it won't disturb my mouse and I can keep working.
    2. How can I register a keyboard stroke? Same as above
    3. How can I have automator move windows? I have two monitors and there are times when I may want it to move a window from one mintor to another
    The following is a list of all the things I'm attempting to accomplish at the moment (with other things when I think of them) with automator (either through applications, folder actions, or ical actions):
    1. Register a mouse click at a given area or on a given element in a safari page
    2. Register a keyboard stroke in a given program (be able to focus on a program and then do the keystroke)
    3. Move windows from one location to another
    4. Full-screen and Un-full-screen iTunes at certain times of day
    5. Download all purchased items on iTunes that aren't on the computer (sometimes iTunes doesn't download stuff if it was downloaded on my MacBook Pro first)
    6. Automatically voice read reminders (that I've set in Reminders) each day at a given time (I can use loop to repeat it to make sure I hear it all)
    I'll think of more of course, but the mouse click, keyboard stroke, and moving windows is the big thing I'm trying to figure out how to do. Can anyone help?
    Also, I am not a computer tech. I am tinkering with this because it's fun and helpful, but an answer of "just use applescript" or "just use java" will likely just give me a headache. I know that it's going to be one of those codes, but I'm hoping someone has a "base" code that can be copied and pasted that's just a standard click that I can adjust for where I need to click and what process I need to click on.
    If there is an Action Pack that includes a "Register Mouse Click" and/or "Register Keyboard Stroke", then that would work great, but the only action packs for automator I've seen that work with Mavericks is for photoshop.

    You're asking for a lot in one post.  It would be better to break your requests down a bit.
    For example, to deal with mouse clicks, you can use the Automator Action Run Shell Script with this python script:
    import sys
    import time
    from Quartz.CoreGraphics import *
    def mouseEvent(type, posx, posy):
            theEvent = CGEventCreateMouseEvent(None, type, (posx,posy), kCGMouseButtonLeft)
            CGEventPost(kCGHIDEventTap, theEvent)
    def mousemove(posx,posy):
            mouseEvent(kCGEventMouseMoved, posx,posy);
    def mouseclick(posx,posy):
            mouseEvent(kCGEventLeftMouseDown, posx,posy);
            mouseEvent(kCGEventLeftMouseUp, posx,posy);
    ourEvent = CGEventCreate(None);
    # Save current mouse position
    currentpos=CGEventGetLocation(ourEvent);
    # Click the "Apple"
    mouseclick(25, 5);
    # 1 second delay
    time.sleep(1);
    # Restore mouse position
    mousemove(int(currentpos.x),int(currentpos.y))
    It will look like this in Automator:
    To drag something (i.e. a window, a file icon) from position 40,60 to 60,300:
    import time
    from Quartz.CoreGraphics import *
    def mouseEvent(type, posx, posy):
               theEvent = CGEventCreateMouseEvent(None, type, (posx,posy), kCGMouseButtonLeft)
               CGEventPost(kCGHIDEventTap, theEvent)
    def mousemove(posx,posy):
               mouseEvent(kCGEventMouseMoved, posx,posy);
    def mouseclickdn(posx,posy):
               mouseEvent(kCGEventLeftMouseDown, posx,posy);
    def mouseclickup(posx,posy):
               mouseEvent(kCGEventLeftMouseUp, posx,posy);
    def mousedrag(posx,posy):
               mouseEvent(kCGEventLeftMouseDragged, posx,posy);
    ourEvent = CGEventCreate(None);
    # Save current mouse position
    currentpos=CGEventGetLocation(ourEvent);
    # move mouse to upper left of screen
    mouseclickdn(40, 60);
    # drag icon to new location
    mousedrag(60, 300);
    # release mouse
    mouseclickup(60, 300);
    # necessary delay
    time.sleep(1);
    # return mouse to start positon
    mouseclickdn(int(currentpos.x),int(currentpos.y));
    For keystokes in AppleScript (which can be added to Automator with the Run Applescript Action) see: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/keycodes.php

  • Lost keypresses and mouse clicks:  Hardware problem?

    I recently bought an Intel MBP, and I've been noticing strange behaviors with regard to keypresses and mouse (touchpad) clicks getting lost sometimes. The problems I'm having are hard to reproduce intentionally, but I can hear the keypresses and mouse button clicks when I do them, yet nothing happens. While it's possible, that I sometimes am hitting the wrong key, I have been paying closer attention lately to this problem, and of course, the mouse button kinda hard to hit incorrectly. Here are some examples of weird things I encounter:
    If I click in a text field in Safari, sometimes the first keypress (and only the first) will get lost.
    Sometimes, the first keypress I type right after clicking gets lost. For instance, just now, I noticed a typo in the above sentence, so I clicked on the character and hit the Delete key. The cursor was in the right place, but the delete didn't happen. I had to press the key again.
    Sometimes, even when the window for sure has focus and the pointer is squarely pointing to a link, the first click on the link won't take. I have to click it again. Since Safari doesn't have adequate feedback for when you click something, that can get particularly frustrating. Similar things happen with buttons in applications or on the title bar.
    If I'm using an X11 app, and I copy/paste with the clipboard, the touchpad won't respond to movement for 2 or 3 seconds afterward. This is particularly visible with "nedit". I don't think this is an "ignore accidental touchpad input" issue, because this only happens with clipboard actions; other keys don't have this effect. I haven't noticed this with native apps.
    However, I have noticed in X11 and native apps, sometimes, Ctrl/Cmd-C and Ctrl/Cmd-V will be ignored. They're never ignored if I selected the text using the keyboard (shift+arrows), but if I select the text with the mouse and then use the shortcut to copy, the copy/paste sometimes doesn't happen.
    I have noticed that if I am more deliberate about clicks (make sure to hold the button down longer), the probability of losing the event SEEMS to be reduced, but not eliminated. Is there a debounce circuit involved that's causing me trouble?
    This kind of loss of input is unusual to me. I have a number of Windows and Linux PCs, and I've never experienced this sort of thing. I've also used a few Macs at school before I got this one and didn't notice anything weird.
    Can anyone shed some light on this for me? It would seem odd that I should have to modify my keyboard/mouse using behavior when switching to the Mac. If the problem is hardware, how can I prove it? (Perhaps I could boot Knoppix from a CD and mess around a bit.) If the problem is software, is this a case of MacOS trying to second-guess user input?
    Thanks!

    Theosib,
    Apple regularly monitors these boards, but you may never see a response from Apple directly. Assume this is a user to user forum. If you are having a problem with the computer and need a response from Apple call 1-800-APLCARE and speak to customer relations at that office if the technician is not able to satisfy your needs.
    Your problem while not unheard of, is more uncommon than the boards may make you believe.
    Remember, Spotlight is constantly indexing. If your hard drive is overfull, it may take longer for Spotlight to index, thus cause a multitasking delay. If you have many Dashboard widgets, they may all be trying to access the net for updates at once, and again, a delay might happen. I've written a FAQ* about several other factors which may affect Mac OS X speed, which could in theory also affect keyboard input:
    http://www.macmaps.com/Macosxspeed.html
    And of course, you should always check Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse to make sure your input settings are the ones most comfortable for you when using the keyboard. It is possible a repeat rate could cause a delay.
    Edit: I attempted to answer another of your questions here recently with an update:
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3988468
    Please take a look and see if it answers your question.
