Movie Page spinning ball

I'm trying to add a page for some 1-2 minute videos. Working on the page, I keep getting the spinning ball, even when working with the text. What is the best way to display 4 movies or so on a page and is it better to use the .Mac Web Gallery and a link to it from my site.

Chuck, Thanks for the reply. I'm working on a new page. I'd like to put a minimum of 2 on a page, maybe 4. But maybe that's not good. I'm now saving them 320x240 mp4 using H.264 codec. File size is +/- 5MB each. Here's a link to a published page, to give you an idea what I'd like to do, but I plan on deleted that page & publishing the new one I'm working on.

  • Can't open page - spinning ball!

Since about a week ago, we lost ability to connect to anything related to www.lsc.k12.in.us
Wife & I are teachers in that district. They claim they've changed nothing. I can't find above address in my cookies, nor can I figure out how to add it to cookies. Won't load in F###F#x either. Haven't contacted ISP yet. Suggestions?

Hello, I am also facing issues with websites not opening in safari browser on my Macbook Pro. Initially I installed Snow Leopard (free CD with Macbook Pro) but due to regular internet page expiry issues on safari and firefox browsers, I called up apple and they didn't had a solution for me hence I rebuilt the laptop with old OS (10.5.8). Still pages are expiring on this new OS as well. I have also tried Manual DHCP and disabled IPV6. I have also tried to connect using ethernet cable. Now I am thinking to go to Apple service center and ask them to change the motherboard since I still have hardware warranty. Does anyone has a solution other than this?

  • Spinning ball at Pages startup

When starting Pages, spinning ball of death keep turning and no documents show up.
I boot the iMac in Safe boot mode - Same.
    Please, anyone has a suggestion?

What have you got in the folder?
It may simply be large and numerous, with possibly graphics that need to be converted like .eps, .ai, .bmp etc and it takes time to open, particularly if you don't have enough memory on a slow machine.

  • Why does Pages 09 hang for 1min30sec? The spinning ball, etc...

I am using Pages 09 version 4.3 (not the iWork package, just Pages 09)
Operating system 10.8.3 with 4 Gb memory on an iMac from around 2009 (Intel core 2 duo)
I had been using Quark Xpress for a couple decades and wanted to save a book I did in Pages so I can sell it in the Apple bookstore.
So I saved a Quark document as a pdf.
Then I used an on-line service to convert the pdf to a word document.
Then I opened the word doc in Pages and saved it as a Pages file.
I am in the process of doing a lot of reformatting, but I'm not surprised all the formatting didn't carry over, considering all the flie formats I went through.
The document is about 40 pages and has perhaps 40 pictures, but I do resize them in Photoshop so the Pages document file is only 4.9 Mb.
Pages isn't all that different from Quark, it just seems to hide things in different places.
The problem is that every so often when I click in the document, I get the spinning ball and Pages hangs for 1 minute and 30 seconds (doesn't it seem odd that it is always for the same length of time?). Then it comes out of its coma and I carry on.
Using the Activity Monitor I see Pages using 99.8% or 100% or even 100.5% of CPU. And The Pages line is in red type that reads "Pages (Not Responding).
While I wait for Pages to come to its senses, I can surf the Web, or use other programs, which seems peculiar because if the CPU is 100% occupied, I would think it could.
When I go to the dock and click on the Pages icon, it doesn't come to the front. I have to move any other windows so I can see my Pages document and click on it to bring it to the front.
I went into FontBook and checked all my fonts and deleted a bunch. When I reopened the document, it said it was missing a font, so I selected a substitute, the document opened and I re-saved it with a new name.
Sometimes it hangs when I click in text, but just now it was hanging every time I tried to click on a line behind the main text box.
Just now it hung when I started to go to the Edit menu. I waited and now it's back, as if nothing happened.
    Any ideas?

After a very long night it seems my problems were solved by
    1. making sure all the in-line pictures had the correct wrap around settings and
    2. deleting some lines that had originally been underscores, but wound up being independent lines behind the main text box and
    3. checking my fonts in FontBook and deleting the iffy ones (I dunno if this made any real difference, but I mention it anyway).
Every time I would select a line there would be a long pause. Initially 1 1/2 minutes, but shorter as I deleted the lines one by one.
There were also pauses when trying to select in-line pictures, and sometimes for no good reason that i could discern.
Anyway, now that the pictures' wrap around is re-set, and the lines are delected, there are bo more pauses!
Whew. I spent hours watching that ball spin. Still, it was better than re-creating the whole book.

  • Firefox 18 on Mountain Lion frequently hangs with spinning ball for 1 min while a page is loading, or while opening a new tab. No tabs useable

Firefox 18 on Mountain Lion. Frequently hangs for minutes with spinning ball, usually while a page is loading (status bar says "loading..." "waiting..."), but sometimes just while on the same page. Other tabs and windows are not useable, even though only one tab is waiting. I usually have 2-4 windows open with several tabs each. Behavior is no different in safe mode. This is making the browser unusable.
In the past this happened and I've reinstalled or created a new clean profile, but it always recurs.

    Hi,

Maybe, describe precisely what you are working with.
    which operating system
which exact version of the application
    are two basic required infos.
And of course look at the thread which the dumb machine was able to find for you (in the More Like This box) when you failed to do by yourself.

  • Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally?

I hope I'm submitting this properly, I apologize if this irritates anyone because of improper etiquette. Why do applications (Illustrator, Pages, Mail) launch so slowly with spinning ball (about a minute to 90 seconds) when Mac is connected to our LAN, but when I disconnected Mac from the LAN, those applications launch instantly and function normally? This is a condition which seemed to start just recently and abruptly. These applications reside on, and are launched from the startup drive, not from a network drive. Also, we have a NAS drive on the LAN that we connect to that also takes a minute or two to mount, when it used to (before this problem) mount on the desktop in a matter of about 5 seconds. We have three identical Mac Pros on the LAN, and they all have this problem when launching and using the above mentioned applications. When I physically unplug the network cable from the Mac, all applications launch instantly and function normally. I know very little about networks, so I can't begin to test or change any setting pertaining to our network - if that is where the problem lies. The only recent change to our network situation is that we lost or our internet and phone service due to massive flooding here in Minot, North Dakota (our ISP tells us the communication lines are under water and shorting out). But shouldn't our LAN still function even though we have lost our connection to the outside world? Thanks so much, in advance, for helping me solve this problem. Sheldon.

    Hi there.
A slow LAN can have many things so its going slow.
    1) is your lan 1gbit speed? (full duplex)
    2) are the macs also 1Gbit speed? (full duplex)
    3) does your nas has a firewall? (so you can see what the mac asking there)
    4) on the macs is the firewall on? (does the programms can pass the fw?)
    5) how big is the nas and how many files/dirctorys are on the nas? (big folders speeds down )
many questions, but sometimes there is a solution.
    regards tim

  • Recovery with InDesign6 and spinning ball of death

This morning the power went out while I had been working in InDesign and  Illustrator.
I came in and saved the project before the back up power  went out but did not get the Mac powered off completely before the back  up power stopped. When the power came back on, I restarted the mac and  Indesign, and my project is now constantly getting the spinning ball of  death; I can't even open the file even though it says it was saved. ALL other programs are fine. Just problems with indesign.
I have reset the SMC and did a disc check on the hard drive and the disc utility said everything was fine.
PLEASE HELP! I am freaking out about my project!!
    Thanks.

No. Placing pages will not help.
Try exporting a file that will open to .idml (see Remove minor corruption by exporting). I suspect, though that tehre may be program damage from the crash. Have you verified that you can create a new file and add pages?
If the .idml doesn't work, the next thing to try, if the new file is editable, is to creat a new file the same size as the one with a problem, then rename Master A to something you are not using in the problem file. Open the Paragraph Styles panel and from the flyout menu choose Load Paragraph Styles and choose the problem file as the source. Import the Basic Paragraph style and tell ID to use the incoming style.
Next, go back to the problem file and select all the pages in the Pages panel and opent the panel flyout menu. Choose Move Pages... and for the target pick your new file. Put the pages BEFORE page 1 so they don't switch sides.
In the new file, delet the last page which is now an extra, and see how it works.

  • Why do I get the spinning ball forever on travel websites?

I use cable internet and had a field tech come out to check the modem/router. He found nothing wrong. I'm wondering if the problem is with my Mac. It seems like with travel sites in particular such as Megabus, or vacation websites, I have to wait a few minutes for the pages to load. Any idea what could be causing this?

If you are using Safari, try emptying the cache. Press Command + Option + E then quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click Details then remove all the cookies for the sites where you see the spinning ball.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari and try one of those sites again.

  • IMac seems slow and lots of spinning balls.

I have a 3 yr old iMac that has been acting very slow and gives me lots of spinning balls.  The HD is still 1/4 empty.
What is the best way to trouble shoot this problem?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • New MBP - endless spinning ball :(

I have had this MBP for about six months. It is a 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo, OS10.4.8. I had the spinning ball problem from the beginning, so I upgraded my memory to 1.5 GB. That has helped only slightly.
Lately I have been using it more professionally, more often - Photoshop CS2, pretty big files back and forth, scanning, managing files, etc. I am encountering the spinning ball constantly: navigating between files, changing file sizes, opening files, and especially working with the Bridge (I think the File Browser was better, at least performance wise).
I am really, really disppointed with this machine. It is not fast, it does not perform well, and most frustratingly, as I've stated, I get the hanging spinning ball all the time. It feels like the six year old PC laptop my wife finally got rid of, not a state-of-the-art Mac laptop.
I called Apple a few months back and they said the warranty was only for hardware, and I had to troubleshoot software issues on the Apple site.
I also bought this machine in the States, and brough it here to the UK. (I don't know if that effects my warranty).
I can't work professionally with this product, I thought Apple was better than this - I also have a G5 desktop machine which works pretty well.
    What should I do??
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    G5, dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Christopher, as others have mentioned, your problems are due to running legacy PPC apps via Rosetta emulation. And these are substantial programs with big RAM and CPU appetites.
Rosetta effectively doubles their RAM demands and cuts their performance by about 50% due to emulating PPC instructions on the fly.
The spinning balls are due to page outs in the Virtual Memory system, which uses the Hard Drive to make up for too little real RAM.
The more legacy apps you are running in Rosetta, the more virtual memory is used -- and this affects the responsiveness of all applications, even Intel native or Universal ones.
The solutions are: 1) run fewer legacy PPC apps; 2) get more RAM; 3) make sure you have adequate free space (at least 10% free) on your hard drive to allow VM to work efficiently.
If you fire up Utilities > Activity Monitor you can see which PPC legacy apps are running. Try to get that down to none. Activity Monitor will also tell you how many page-outs are occuring in Virtual Memory. My guess is: alot!

  • Lion, Spinning Ball for a few seconds at a time

Macbook Pro, Lion, 8Gig. I have frequent encounters with the spinning ball. Everything stops, the ball comes on, stays for several seconds, then back to life. During the episodes Safari, for example, is completely unresponsive. During the episodes, I can click on another application and switch to it.
This mac has been through several generations of OS X, and several different physical machines, using Migration Assistant at each shift.
    Any help gratefully received!

    Hey Sally,
We have an article that outlines a few troubleshooting steps if your Mac is running a bit slowly.
OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3915
If you find your Mac is running slowly, check any open applications to make sure they’re compatible with your computer. Or you may need to increase your hard disk space or repair your hard disk.
An application you’re using may require more memory than your computer has. To see how much memory your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires. To find out how to increase your computer’s memory, see the documentation that came with it.
Quit any application that isn’t compatible with your computer. For example, an application may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the application to find out what it requires.
To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
To see what graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > About This Mac, click More Info, and then click Displays.
There might not be enough free disk space on your computer’s startup disk. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.Increase disk space
Quit any applications you’re not using.
If none of these suggestions work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility.Repair a disk
    Hope this helps,
    David

You have SCADS of extensions and the things running. McAfee, Intego, Orbicule, CleanMyMac, and others I've not ever even heard of. My first recommendation would be to remove all of these and see if things improve.

  • I have a word document that keeps stalling with the spinning ball sign - how can I stop this?

Have a 2009 Macbook Air. Never given me any trouble before. But I am working on a long word document (docx) - 200 pages of text - and after 5 minutes of working on it it starts to stall and the spinning ball comes up every time I try to type or edit. I have tried resaving it as a doc. I have transferred it to my main IMac where the same problem occurs. No other word documents are doing this. This document is a novel, three years in the making, which is due to go off to publishers in a few weeks time so I am rather worried that it is going to be unrescuable. any suggestions?
I have a time machine and so on so it is all backed up, but i want to be able to work on it!
    Please help!?

    Try this.
Open the document and select and copy a few pages, say ten pages.
Open a new blank document and paste the pages you copied into that.
Save it with a new name.
Work on those new pages to see if the problem has disappeared.
If this helps, continue breaking up the large file in to smaller chunks and working on them
You can of course later reverse the process and merge the files into one new one.
This suggestion is based on my experiences with large Word files. Breaking it up in to smaller chunks does two things. First, if there is any corruption in the old file, the new copies might escape that. Second, the Mac is faster handling the smaller chunks.
