Moving a layer group should not incure a performance hit (init a set of layers vs recursive)

I have finally taken the time to understand the behavior of the slughish performance of moving layer groups.
On my computer in CS6:
1. If I have just 2 layers in a layer group. Selecting both of them and ctrl-dragging them around is smooth and responsive.
2. If you have however select the layer group which contains just these 2 layers, the performance is obviously and terribly impacted. The drag is slow and choppy. With just 2 it is unbearable with regards to workflow but with a large layer group the performance it is utterly unusable. I am now looking to test what occurs in older versions.
I am a programmer. Not only that, I am a programmer who regularly targets 16 milliseconds on the scene and model graph. Learn to code and learn to program with hitting a 16ms user experience. That means abstraction culling to perform a minimum number of operations for a feature vs inertia, not the logically beautiful and sound abstractions we all would love to have on infinite computation. That's the reality of performance optimization. Performance optimization should be refered to as abstraction culling because that's what it is.
It should not make any logical difference how a set of layers is initilized for a transform. Please initialize the arrayed set of layers from the hierarchy of groups instead of executing your obviously flawed and unoptimized recursive routine.

I'm just not seeing a difference in performance between dragging a single layer around, multiple individually selected layers together, or a whole group of layers (where the group is what's selected in the Layers panel).
I tested on both Photoshop CS6 and CC.  I'm on Windows 8.1.  And I can honestly say I've never seen the layers panel scroll slowly.
That's not to say I'm seeing instantaneous, smooth moves of layer data - with a sufficiently large image, the update rate goes down to where the frame rate of moving things is quite visible - e.g., 4 or 5 frames per second - but that's still interactive, and it has always been like this with Photoshop as far back as I can remember.  If anything, moving data around has gotten a bit snappier in Photoshop CC.
You may well have something specific going wrong on your system, or with your particular document.
Why not post a copy of a specific test image on which you can reproduce the issue, and that you'd like others to test with.  I'll be happy to drag layers and groups around in it and report back.
That reminds me, I need to get software installed to capture my desktop as a video, as I need to make a training video soon.

  • Moving Elements in Layer Groups

I need feedback as to how to move elements around within layer groups. I always organize my psd files by setting up lots of layer groups. I've noticed that with CS3, that I am unable to move just one layer within a group without everything in the group moving. For example, If I have a group and within that group I have a text layer, and other layers with various elements, If I want to move the type, everything goes with it even though I haven't linked them altogether. Am I missing something? I don't remember this with earlier versions. It is driving m crazy. Is there a preference I have to set? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is your Move Tool option set to Auto-Select: Group? Change it to Auto-Select: Layer.
Or just turn it off to disable any Auto-Select..

  • PO Created by User A should not be changed by User B

    Hi Experts,
My User has a specific requriement in Purchase Order.
If a purchase order is created by User A, Other users like B and C who are in the same purchasing group should not be able to change the PO created by User A.
Similarly, Others should not change PO created by USER B.
Is there any logic to develop this type of checking.
    Regards
    Kuna.

    Hi Venkat,
Usr A, B and C in context belongs to same purchasing group, then probably they have the similar authorizations.
As per my understanding, you want all these user to create the Purchase Document of similiar Type but do not want them to change the PO Created by others.
You can have this control by user exit 'EXIT_SAPMM06E_013'.
In this you just have to write your logic to restrict the user as shown below.

  • Photoshop CS5 Hangs on Layer Group name edits

Layer Group name edits are causing my PS CS5 to hang repeatedly. At first I thought it was the document I was working in, so I created a generic document, and was able to replicate the problem in the new document.
With a .psd open, in the layers pallete, I have a Layer Group (A) that contains multiple sub layer groups (B) which contain additional sub layer groups (C). So the hierarchy is a three level layer group. At the sub-most layer group (C) I need to rename the groups to "Three-set colors". Since I have fifteen groups that all need the word "Three" in their labels, it would be most convenient to be able to highlight the word "Three", copy to clipboard and paste. I type in the word "Three" in the layer group name (not in the properties insector) and highlight the word "Three". Thats when PS CS5 hangs, and I have to reboot my system to unfreeze Photoshop. Only Photoshop hangs, the system does not crash. This happens in both 64 and 32 bit, old or new docs.
The plugins I have are Mask Pro x64 (OnOne) and Sitegrinder x32 (Medialab), but they are not activated when the hang occurs.
    Any ideas?
    PS CS5 12.01 x64
    Win 7 Ultimate
    12 gb ram
    i7 960 @ 320
    ATI Radeon HD 5700
    4x HD's

I wasn't able to reproduce the problem with either Photoshop CS5 32 bit or x64.  That says there's something different about our systems, and that there's likely not a systemic problem in Photoshop.
Chris Cox, who replied above, is an Adobe Engineer, by the way.
I was able to replace parts or all of the names with, or insert the word Three in front of existing layer names.
Are you seeing any errors in your Windows system logs at the time the hang is occurring?
Have you updated all your software (e.g., video drivers, Windows Updates, etc.)?

  • ? on moving items within layer groups

i am having trouble using layer groups. I have a layer group named Group 1 with 5 layers in it. Each layer contains 1 image. I'm unable to move 1 layer to center the image without all the other layers taking on the same position.Even if they aren't turned on, or selected. The only layer selected and turned on is the layer i want to move the image.
I don't have a lock on. Even if i turn off the other layers, once i turn them on again, poof - they all position incorrectly.
How can I turn off this glue type action from happeing?
    Thanks!
    Marley

I've never seen anything like the behaviour you are describing.
The only things that will cause layers to move together are the following conditions…
selecting multiple layers in the panel
Linking them as mentioned before (see the small link incon at the bottom of your layers panel)
highlighting and moving a group. This means using the move tool when a layer GROUP is highlighted not an individual layer
Your screen shot impies that none of this is happening. Reset your photoshop preferences by holding command option shift while launching the application.

  • Need Photoshop action to record WHERE on canvas a layer is placed, NOT how many pixels it was moved.

    Hello everyone,
I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out.
    I created an action:
I have a bunch of PSD files of some pretty expensive rings that were shot at hi-res and cropped.
Now, i have a canvas that is 996x1104 px.
All of these rings must sized to 540px width AND positioned on the canvas at x:498px and y:706 (the bottom of the layer must touch 706px, which I did by clicking on the little tiny box at the bottom of the little square made of little squares (that's next to the x and y positions when you are on Transform mode).
I made an action for all of these steps.
However, when I batch a group of these hi-res ring PSDs and apply the action,
they are always in different spots. They all need to be set on y:706px so it looks like they are all resting on the same plane.
I found out why this is happening:
because when I position the ring when creating the action, Photoshop records HOW MUCH in pixels I moved the layer... NOT WHERE ON THE CANVAS IT'S POSITIONED.
This is what I need: to have Photoshop record WHERE on the canvas the layer is positioned.
    Can anyone help?
We have so much work to do by Monday and setting up this action would definitely help us.
    Thanks so much!
    _Chris

Did you try settings the rulers units to Percent before recording the action and see if that makes a difference?
You might possibly need a script for your goal, in which case you could ask over on the photoshop scripting forum:

  • Import psd with layer groups in AE CC - "Retain Layer Sizes" not working

Hi All,I created some shape layers in Photoshop and grouped them separately. Then imported this psd file into AE. I checked "Retain Layer Sizes" however all the layer-groups have the same size bounding box as document size instead of at the layer size. If I ungroup them in Photoshop and then import it, the "Retain Layer Sizes" just worked fine.
    Environment:
    Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    Photoshop CC 2014
    After Effects CC 2014

    in After Effects:

    Thank you Rick!
Yes I noticed that. I wonder if it is possible that to make bounding box to extend to only the dimensions of the subsequent layers instead of document size? Now you can see that the anchor points are not located at right place. The reason I grouped layers in Photoshop is that I want to transform or animate one group at same time.

  • User should not able to delete group in sharepoint

    Hi,
    I have a requirement like,
user added a document in CRM2011 and clicked on open sharepoint then he is redirecting to sharepoint. There if he clicks on manage permissions then all the groups inside the document he can see and delete also but perticular group he should not delete how
can i restrict user to delete the perticular group.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to control particular user not to delete particular groups.
There is no out of the box way to accomplish this with SharePoint.
If you wanted to achieve this function, you should create some custom codes, there are some suggestions for your reference.
You can create a list to store the users and the matched groups with the users.
Then you should edit the user.aspx page with some custom code, invoke the list, make some conditions to determine whether the user has permission to remove the groups.
    2. Another workaround is that you can create a time job for the particular groups, if the groups have been removed , then use the time job to recreate them.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • 13.02 info window not working with layer groups?

Normally when you have an adjustment layer selected the "info" window will display the before and after color values for the point under the cursor as well as any color samplers.
Since upgrading to 13.02 when the selected adjustment layer is inside of a layer group it will display the values as after/after instead of before/after.
Is this a common issue or is it just me?

  • New Group Policy not working on 2008 RDS in 2012 Domain - Security Filtering problem?

We have a Windows 2008 R2 RDS in a Windows 2012R2 Domain. We want to lockdown the 2008 RDS for Domain users that we have added to a new  security Group--named "Data Collection Users". These users are "Domain Users" and login to the
2008 RDS using Windows XP SP3 machines to run a specific application -they do not use their local desktops for anything. WE added this group to the local RDU group on the RDS.  We do not have any other users that login to the RDS through terminal,
    including any Domain Admins.
So far we have done these steps:
On the DC, created new OU (called Terminal Servers) and moved the RDS into it.
Opened Group Policy on the DC, and under GP Objects, created a new policy called "TS Users Lockdown".
Linked the Policy to the OU.
Under Security Filtering we removed the Authenticated Users, added the RDS computer account (called QS2), added the "Data Collection Users" and chose Allow for "Read" and "Apply Policy"
Under Security Filtering, for Domain Admins, we chose Deny for "Apply Group Policy"
We edited the Policy (under Computer Configuration>AT>SYS>GP) to Enable Loopback processing - Replace mode.
We first tested the policy by trying to remove the "Run" from startup menu and "prohibit access to Control Panel".
We ran the Group Policy force update from within GP Management - ran successfully.
We did not reboot the RDS.
Neither of the settings we tried in Step 7 worked.  Why Not?
Here are images from the Security Filtering:

Ok--Do I reboot the RDS or the DC?  or both?
Does it look like my Security Filtering is correct?  I have seen posts where you should not remove the "Authenticated users"?

  • PSE 10 Can't edit read-only layer groups (a.k.a.  I just want to make a custom DVD menu in Elements)

A little background: I wanted to make a custom menu so I opened a copy of one of the canned menu.PSD files in PS Elements 10.  It opened up with all layers and their sublayers showing.  So far, so good.  I did a bunch of editting and had my menu just about right, saved it and burned a DVD with it.  I saw some corrections that I needed to make so I opened the same .PSD file and it showed all the main layers (with the folder icon) but not the attached layers.
I double-clicked to open these layers and got:
"You are attempting to open a group, which is not supported in Photoshop Elements.  The layers in this group will be simplified into a single layer.  Simplify the layers? Yes No."
I was just editing these things the day before yesterday.  All I've done since then is register my software online. I have seen it stated in this forum that "Elements doesn't support layer group/sets" but it was referring to an earlier version I'm guessing.
Question 1:  Is this still true of PSE 10?
Question 2:  If so, how was I editing them the other day?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
    Joe

If you haven't uninstalled premiere elements then it should work, but there are a few things that will not work when editing the dvd templates:
(it only works on certain dvd templates and only on a machine with premiere elements installed)
*If you change the document dimensions either larger or smaller. (not the size of the elements in the template but the overall size such as using
    Image>Resize>Image Size or Canvas Size)
*If you delete any of the layer groups
*Changing the name of the document
There are probably other causes and they may know more on the premiere elements forum:

  • Layer Group Channel blending, incorrect colors

    Hello!
Wanted to bring up an issue that has troubled me in Photoshop for years, with the hope of it gaining some traction for fixing. For a while now (unsure which version), it was possible to set a Layer Group to filter/isolate a specific channel. This is a very useful feature for me, in creating channel masks for game assets and for use in real time shader techniques. However, it has a very large flaw that has made the feature largely unusable - and I'm surprised others have not had the issue as well as it should affect print as well (if in a lesser effect).
When you use this feature, and essentially mask the contents of a layer to the Red, Green, or Blue channels, the layers in those Groups are still hit by color management, which results in the pixels drawing and blending incorrect colors. an example:
In the first file, each group is set to blend to a specific channel, and a black to white gradient is applied in that layer.
In the second file, those same layers are copied and pasted into the channels of a new RGB document. The file already looks very different.
Finally, in the 3rd file the two layers are compared using the Difference blend mode. Can observe the difference between the two layers here, which is a result of the first method (Layer Grouping) not blending the pixels properly as if they were a channel - which when using the R/G/B blend masking on Group Properties, is what should be expected.
When i use this technique of pushing certain black and white images into a channel, they are made for a specific purpose and function. Since the layer group blending alters what the values of those pixels are (very important for real time shader creation) in the final file, it makes this amazingly useful feature unusable. I would LOVE to be able to have Layer Group channel blending be a part of my workflow, instead of constantly copying and pasting into channels. I have created various scripts to save these types of files out easier, but i could greatly simplify them by being able to save this 'RGB Mask' file directly from my PSD.
Wanted to share and start a discussion about it, to see if it would be possible to get a fix for this in the future!
    thanks!
    Maury

  • To group or not to group?

    Hi there,
I'm an illustrator that has been using Photoshop for years but has just learnt to use illustrator.
I'm doing a publishing job where I am suppling muliple spot illustrations on one spread ( I'm working by drawing my line work on one layer & colour on another) This is my first job using illustrator so I just want to check this out before I supply the artwork, Should I group each individual spot illustration so they can scale them or move them if they need to, it's just this freaks me out slightly as it makes the illustration one layer! & I'm used to suppling everything layered in photoshop, I know they can ungroup it so just want to check this is they way most people using Illustrator supplly artwork.
Sorry in advance if this is an idiotic question!
Any advice greatly appreciated : )
    Cheers

To group or not to group is a judgment call based upon the artwork. In Illustrator most often the more grouping the better. The direct select tool with the option key held down turns into the group select tool. This can be a very powerful tool for making edits, if the file is grouped logically.
I recommend keeping groups logical. Someone may need to rotate the arm of a character you illustrated, so if your arm group included a small spectral highlight in an eyeball, someone may be zoomed in on that arm, and miss that they rotated that part of the eyeball.
When you are done it is always good to check if you have anything locked or hidden. Occasionally I get some artwork and when I do a show all, something appears that was hidden, and you are not sure if that was part of the art or not.
In your example of all black linework on one layer, and the color on another, using separate layers is perfectly acceptable and would be preferred by myself if I had to do something like thicken up all the black lines, or  warm up all the colors. You cannot be perfect for everyone, but if you try to keep your groups logical, you will save time/errors for yourself in the end and most everyone else.
