Moving database from mssql server 2008 R2 to mssql server 2012

Dear Guru!
I am trying to move a database from mssql server 2008 R2 on mssql server 2012. Made a backup in mssql server management studio, tried to
make a restore in mssql 2012 management studio. But get an error
'The operating system returned the error '5 (Access denied) '. How can I solve the problem?

Use ALTER TDATABASE MODIFY if you want to rename files and sp_renamedb if you want to rename the db itself

  • Migration of the database from Microsoft SQL 2014 Express to Microsoft SQL 2012 Server

I posted a similar thread yesterday, and I realized that there was a serious typo.
    Link: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/b3e201ea-6c7c-43a4-8908-842b714ea451/migration-of-the-database-from-microsoft-sql-2014-express-to-microsoft-sql-2012-server?forum=sqlservermigration
Therefore, I made a decision to post another thread right now.
    I am
writing to ask if there are any known issues when migration from MS SQL 2014 Express to MS SQL 2012 Server version. Are there any step-by-step instruction on how I can go about doing this?
Looking forward to your response. Thank you for your time.

    Hello,
SQL Server 2012 setup program won’t allow you to perform a downgrade from SQL Server 2014 Express Edition. Backup/Restore
and Detach/Attach won’t help you either.
One option you have left is using SQL Server Import/Export Wizard as explained on the following article.
    http://www.mytechmantra.com/LearnSQLServer/Downgrade_SQL_Server_Database_P1.html
    Hope this helps.

  • Unable to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 SP1

I'm encountering error after error, after successfully installing the upgrade advisor (which took some doing) and running it with essentially no warnings/errors (the one warning was on the connection strings, as I recall -- and all of the warnings had a
    "fix after" status.
First failure involved SSRS and the inability to create the "managed account". Backed out the upgrade using http://sqldbanotes.blogspot.com/2013/10/how-to-fix-failed-in-place.html
Now the failure involves SSAS and unable to connect to analysis services with name MSSQLServerOLAPService.  That is the logical name for the service, although it shows up as just MSSQLServer when looking at it in the services list.  I tried
setting the service account to a local account as  well as to Local System -- did not make a difference, the upgrade couldn't apparently find it regardless.
Has anybody successfully done an in place upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012?

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your post and I am glad to hear that the issue is resolved. Thanks for you posting a reply to share your solution and I had marked it as answer. That way, other community members could benefit from your sharing.

  • I installed Crystal Reports server 2008, i'm geting server not started erro

    Hi,
I'm getting error with server not started or not available error (FWM 01003). If i check in CCM, i don't see any entry for CMS server entry. How to start CMS server??? Please advise me. i installed trail version of crystal reports server 2008.
    thanks in advance!!!
    Ben.

I am a consultant for Business Object products and experienced the same exact problem. We were installing Business Objects Edge, which is similar to Crystal Reports Server 2008, with MS SQL Server 2000 SP4 for the CMS System Database on a server that was named <Numbers>-<Letters>.
We discovered that some scripts that the installation and CMS run fail when the Server Name of the Business Objects Edge Server start with a number. When the CMS System Database is setup, a table called CMS_IdNumbers6 is created. It should have three columns, NameId, IdName and third column that is named after the server where you are installing Crystal Reports Server 2008, Business Objects Edge or Business Objects Enterprise. This column is called <ServerName>_iad_intensive_int_6400.
This column fails to get created when your server name starts with a number and subsequent scripts that insert records into this column fail. Renaming the server where we were installing Business Objects Edge to <Letters><Numbers> (no dashes either to be safe) solved the problem. We were successfully able to install Business Objects Edge. Please note: This is the server where you are installing Crystal Reports Server 2008 that needs to be renamed and NOT the MS SQL Server--just making a note because we had to go back and forth with our server team a couple of times on this point.

  • How to upgrade Windows Server 2008 Foundation to Windows Server 2008 Standard

I have a Dell server with Windows Server 2008 Foundation installed. I am now on a larger network which has their own servers for authentication and the Windows Server 2008 Foundation will not let join a domain with more than 15 users. I was told that I needed
to upgrade Windows server 2008 foundation to Windows server 2008 Standard and that process can be done "in place" but I can't find how do do it. I called Dell and they said they basically said they didn't know what I was talking about.
    How do I  do this?

According to the first one you can perform an in-place upgrade.

  • Moving databases from SQL Server 2012 to SQL Server 2014

    Hi
I need to move all my SP 2013 databases from a SQL Server 2012 to a SQL Server 2014. I have read these articles:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725(v=office.15).aspx
    http://sharepointpromag.com/sharepoint-administration/simple-guide-moving-sharepoint-content-databases-new-server
    The TechNet article says:
The new database server must run either the same version of Windows Server and SQL Server as the existing database server or one of the following versions:
    SQL Server 2008
    SQL Server 2012
    SQL Server 2014
And the article in SharePoint Pro Magazine says:
Obviously you’ll need your target SQL server (or instance) installed and configured. It should use the same version and patch level of SQL Server as the source SQL server
So I'm a bit confused. Which article is right?
    Thanks
    Jakob

it is fully supported and a simple process to move to a new sql server (anything 2008+ works).  just don't go back in versions.  you can go 2008-2012, 2008-2014, 20120-2014, just not 2012-2008, etc.
just be sure not to detach/attach the databases in sql, do a sql database backup, then a sql database restore on the new server and point sharepoint (hopefully using aliases, as it makes this all much smoother) to point to the new server.
Also, be sure to put SP1 and the April 2014 CU or newer on the farm BEFORE moving the databases.  2014 is "supported before the April CU, but there are several compatibility issues prior to april CU.  one example is that user profile sync doesn't
work properly with sql 2014 if sharepoint is not at least april 2014 CU.
hope that all is clear and helps you out, let me know if there are more questions.

  • Migrating Databases from ISCSI Storage - adding second (3rd?) server, creating a DAG

    Dear all,
we currently have a single Exchange server, 2010, current patchlevel, 2008R2 OS
9 Mailbox Databases, Size about 3 TB, about 1 TB (!) Public folder.
Mailbox Databases and Public Folder are stored on a netapp, attached via ISCSI. We are replacing the ISCSI device and have to move the databases to a new ISCSI Device.
Plan is also to have a DAG with 2 mailbox servers and a third server as CAS/Hub Transport.
    Currently I see 3 options:
    1. Connecting the "old" Exchange to the new ISCSI device, moving the Databases offline, adding a second and a third server, creating a dag, replicating the DBs to the new servers, removing the old server from the dag, remove the Mailbox role from
the old server and use it as CAS/Hub Transport.
    2. Adding a second Mailbox Server, moving the databases to the second server, remove the Mailbox role from the old server and use it as CAS/Hub Transport, add a third mailbox server, create a dag.
    3. Adding a second and a third Mailbox server, configuring a DAG, replicating the Databases to the new servers, removing the "old" server from the DAG
Do you have any recommendations about that?
    Best
    Markus

    Hi,
Agree with Nothing 123. The option 3 can be a simple and effective method to achieve your goal.
One thing we need to note is that all DAG members should use the same operation system. And it is recommended to have two NICs for DAG, one for MAPI, one for Replication.

  • Problems upgrading database from 2005 to 2008 R2

I have backed up my databases, uninstalled SQL Server 2005 and installed SQL Server 2008 R2.
    Then restored databases into that.
Problem is compatibility level of the databases is still 2005, it won't let me change it to 100 either as a query or in the properties, the highest level available in properties is 90.
I see the server it's connected to is 9.0.5000 which is 2005, so maybe that's why but how on earth can I make the databases version 2008?
I want to do this to take advantage of the 10GB databases limit, as 2005 databases only have a 4GB limit.
    Thanks.

  • CR 2008 on Server 2008 R2 vs Windows Server 2003

I have posted a similar question before but have not beeen able to come up with a solution.
We recently purchased cr2008 designer sp5 and installed it on server 2008 r2 and server 2003. We have web pages where CR is embedded in the code showing the report. This works fine on server 2003, also works fine on development desktop BUT does not work on server 2008 r2.
The application works but when time to show the CR itsself there is just a blank page with no error messages. I have replcated the code both using vs2005 and vs2008 and none of them are working when it comes to show report.
IIS is configured to run 32bit mode and classic (on server 2008 r2). Applications are comiled with x86 target.
We also have windows applications (without user interfaces) that loops through data base and saves crystal report as .pdf documents to folders to folders and they do work either.
I have been working on this for the last couple fof weeks and I am clueless.
Any ideas where to start looking and what to try? Any any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

That could be the discovery we're looking for...
    The message re. Database Vendor Code 1540 is coming from the database client without any modifications in the CR engine. E.g.; sometimes searching for the error in the database documentation helps. Google is often pretty good also. E.g.;

    http://download.tigerpawsoftware.com/download/v10/Errors%20That%20Can%20Occur%20When%20You%20Run%20a%20Report%20from%20T…
    From SAP documentation:
Failed to retrieve data from the database. Details: [Database Vendor Code: <vendor code number>].
    Cause
The report SQL queries that have been sent to the server cannot be executed, because an error was returned by the database server after it processed the queries. For example, a field/table/procedure required by the report is missing, or the queries contain syntax errors.
    Action
Ensure the report is using the correct connection information. For example, the data source name, server name, database name, and user name are correct. In a database-client test tool, ensure that the fields, tables, and procedures used by the report exist and that SQL queries can be executed against them. In the Crystal Reports designer, verify that the SQL query, as shown under the Database menu Show SQL Query option, does not contain syntax errors. If the SQL query shown in Crystal Reports is valid, execute the same SQL query through a database-client test tool.

  • Install SQL Server 2008 R2 in Windows Server 2012 using SQL4SAP Script

    Hi guys,
Since we are performing a SAP System Migration from older releases of Windows/SQL Server, as detailed on SAP Note
1780433 - System copy of SAP systems on Windows 2012 : SQL Server
We need to install SQL Server 2008 R2 before upgrading the system
When running SQL4SAP Script it states the following
    17/03/2014 08:13:44 p.m.
    Message Box "Windows version error"
OS Family "WindowsNT6.3" is not supported by this script.
    Result: vbOK
On Windows 2012 should i run the SETUP instead the script?
    Thanks!

    Hi Sunny
Im following SAP Note 1780433 - System copy of SAP systems on Windows 2012 : SQL Server
in order to migrate a SAP 640 system from Windows 2003/SQL Server 2005 to Windows 2012/ SQL Server 2012
    Reason and Prerequisites
This note describes how to migrate the mentioned SAP products to Windows 2012/SQL Server 2008 R2,
in order to prepare an upgrade to SAP releases based on NW 7.0 and higher.
Note, that only SAP upgrade paths are supported, that are supported by the SUM tool. For more
information about the upgrade paths supported by SUM, read the Central SUM Note referred to at
    http://www.service.sap.com/SLToolset.
Immediately after the SAP upgrade, your database has to be upgraded to SQL Server 2012. SAP does in general not support SQL Server releases prior to SQL Server 2012 on Windows 2012.
I understand this is not supported from Productive system, we are performing this on a Development system for test purposes.
Nevertheless on the note says Install First SQL Server 2008 R2 and after SAP upgrade, perform upgrade of SQL Server Upgrade, so there is misleasing information.
Im not sure if a 640 System would be able to copied and upgraded in Windows 2012/SQL Server 2012
It doesnt mention that 640_EX2 Kernel Support SQL Server 2012 to install the system.
How would yo recommend a system copy restoring database on these conditions?
    640 System (SQL Server 2005,Win 2003) --> 640 System (SQL Server 2012, Win 2012)
    (and then Upgrading to 740)
    Thanks
