Moving Exchange 2010 DB to another machine

I'm attempting to move a 110GB Exchange database off of a old machine (see below for specs) to a newer machine ( see below for specs). I've successfully linked the new machine to the old machine's domain and have Active Directory synced perfectly.
What is the proper way to go about this? I followed Microsoft documentation on it to no success.
Specs:
Old: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1 Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 (yuck) 8GB RAM 1 1TB HDD
New: Windows Servers 2008 R2 Standard SP1 Intel Xeon E3-1240 V2 16 GB 2 1TB HDDs

Hello,
For standalone database (without DAG) the best option is:
1. Create new mailbox database on the new server.
2. Move all mailboxes to new database using New-MoveRequest or Exchange Management Console:
3. Remove empty old database.
Hope it helps,
Adam
I am getting the following error.
Error: MapiExceptionNetworkError: Unable to make admin interface connection to server. (hr=0x80040115, ec=-2147221227)

  • Moving Exchange 2010 Mailbox replicated databases path in DAG environments.

    Hi there,
I’m trying to get some feedback on the topic of moving Exchange 2010 Mailbox replicated databases path in DAG environments.
Here is the situation: I currently have a 3-Node DAG (Node 1 and Node 2 are in my main datacenter, and Node 3 in my Disaster Recovery (DR) site in a remote location.
I have DB copies in Node 2 and Node 3. The thing is that the DB copies in Node 2 are in an older storage box and since we got a new storage box, I need to move the DBs and related logs of Node 2 to the new storage box
I have found some information about how to deal with this (below I’m listing a KB link) but I would like to reconfirm a couple of things to make sure I’m understanding this correctly
Move the Mailbox Database Path for a Mailbox Database Copy:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979782%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx
According to the KB: “If the mailbox database being moved is replicated to one or more mailbox database copies, you must follow the procedure in this topic to move the mailbox
    database path”
Would this apply to my case even when I’m moving the BDs copies and Logs on Node 2 as opposed to Node 1 where the source DBs are?
On step #3 in the procedure, you are supposed to “Remove all mailbox database copies for the database being moved. After all copies are removed, preserve the database and transaction log files from each server from which the database copy is being removed
by moving them to another location. These files are being preserved so the database copies do not require re-seeding after they have been re-added.”
Then in Step # 7, you are supposed to “Add all of the database copies that were removed in Step #3”
As far as I know, when you add a copy of a database, Exchange creates the copy DB and starts to seed the replica servers with an up to date copy of the DB and all the current transaction logs at that point…according to the instructions
above, you are supposed to re-add the DB copied we preserved...does it mean that we need to wait for the DBs seed process to finish after “adding the DB copy” and then replace the new DBs copies and logs created by the “Add database copy” function with the
DB and logs preserved in Step #3?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

    Hi there,
What the article is stating is that once you have removed the copies you can keep the existing transaction log files and database edb file to allow you not to have to do a full seed. You can do this by using the -seedingpostponed parameter in
    Add-MailboxDatabaseCopy
However, and quite honestly, if your database isn't that big and your are not worried about performing a full copy of the database again to the other DAG members once you have moved your database to its preferred new location, just add the copy in the normal
way and remove the legacy files afterwards.

  • Moving Exchange 2010 Transaction Log

Hi. Running a single instance of SBS2011 with Exchange 2010. We only have one mailbox.
Earlier today I moved our main exchange database (.edb) file to a different hard drive. Used EMC, went through smoothly, no issues.
I then started moving the transaction logs. Same process:
Exchange Management Console > Organization Configuration > Mailbox > Move
    Database Paths
This appeared to be going fine but after 40 mins came up with an error along the lines of "WinRM cannot process the request in the time specified"
Now I cant access any mailboxes. OWA giving the error - Your mailbox appears to be unavailable. Try to access it again in 10 seconds. If you see this
    error again, contact your helpdesk
I have checked in EMC and the mailbox is successfully mounted. I have restarted all exchange services.
I also now have 8.5GB of log files in the "new" location. Not if these are just copies or exchange is actually using this drive.

    Hi:
I think you may be over complicating this.  SBS includes a wizard in the SBS Console to move most/all of the user impacted data stores, including Exchange, SharePoint, WSUS and Redirected folders.  The transaction logs are limited in size if you
use either the SBS backup or a third party backup that is "Exchange Aware" to backup the server or the Exchange subsystem, so there is really no need to move the logs, assuming you are making good backups.

  • Error in moving exchange 2010 mailboxes to Exchange 2013 SP1 during migration

    Dear All,
We were running Exchange 2010 SP3 with MBX/HT/CAS role in single server. Now we are migrating our exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 SP1. After configuring co-existence and during the mailbox move from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 SP1, we are facing below

    Hi joebhoy,
I just did a fresh install of Update Retriever on a T530 and there is an option for Repository path. You'll be able to select the server location and you'll be all set; you shouldn't have to move any files. I hope that helps!

  • Releasing HDD space after moving exchange 2010 (SBS 2011)to Office 365

Hello, I have completed a cut over install to Office 365(email only) form SBS 2011(Exchange 2010). Everything is working perfectly. The customer would like to recover the disk space used by the on premis exchange 2010.
Normally i would just disable Exchange on the SBS server and leave it at that but is there a way to remove all of the mailboxes and/or the database to recover the disk space used by exchange. I know unisntalling exchange is a bad idea on SBS 2011 so would
    like some other options.
    Thanks

    Hi
If you manually setup an outlook profile and enter in all the settings does it work?
In you local DNS you still have an autodiscover record for your local exchange server? Correct?

  • Best way to convert Exchange 2010 Physical to Virtual (esxi 5.1)

    Hello,
I've been doing a bit of research on best practices for Exchange 2010 in VMware and I am pretty sure at this point my hardware and vmware config is going to be able to handle it.  What to people recommend for moving exchange 2010 off a physical server and onto a virtual machine?  Just building an Exchange VM and then migrating the mailboxes, etc?

The best and simple way to do that is:
Make new Exchange nodes as virtual machines to be member on your current physical DAG after that move your Databases on it, then make additional domain controller on virtual machine then transfer the FSMO roles from your current physical domain controller to it... at the end demote your physical environment.
Note: there is no down time in this solution.

  • I can't either mount for remove Exchange 2010 mailbox database file

Yesterday I proceeded with moving Exchange 2010 database file to a newly installed hard drive because my "C" drive was running out of space. After dismouting both the mailbox database and the public folder database, I used EMC's  "move
data path" wizard to move both the mailbox database and public folder database to "mailbox" folder in "D" drive.  The move was successful without an error, but when I opened "mailbox" folder in "D" drive, both
the database file and public folder database files weren't there.  All the other files were moved, but the mailbox database file was gone.
Luckily I manually copied entire mailbox folder to another folder in "D" drive.  So I manually copied mailbox database file (it is about 20GB) to "d:\mailbox".  When I try to mount, I received the following error message.

When I try to move the database path back to the original path, I received the following error message.
    Mailbox Database 1658107303
    Failed
    Error:
There are no source files under the path:d:\emailbox\Mailbox Database 1658107303. Use the command Move-DatabasePath -ConfigurationOnly in the Exchange Management Shell to set the new path in Active Directory only.
    Exchange Management Shell command attempted:
    move-DatabasePath -Identity 'Mailbox Database 1658107303' -EdbFilePath 'c:\progam files\microsoft\exchange server\v14\mailbox\mailbox database 1658107303\Mailbox Database 1658107303.edb' -LogFolderPath 'c:\progam files\microsoft\exchange server\v14\mailbox\mailbox
    database 1658107303'
EMC would not even delete the database file.
I need help.  I need to mount my mailbox database file.  Please help.

If the database was fine pre move I doubt it needs a repair, however if you want to validate do an eseutil /mh ReplaceWithYourDatabaseName.edb and post the results here
did you move the logs as well or are they still in same location
I have seen this before if everything is where its supposed to bea restart fixed it so I would recommend that you put the DB back into the  NEW D path and do a restart to see if that resolves the issue

  • Recover CD key for Exchange 2010

    Hi,
I have to move our Exchange 2010 installation to another physical server as the current one is quiet unstable.
But I can't find our Product Key / CD Key.
Is there any way to retrieve it?
    Best Regards,
    Thomas

Yes, you were wrong. You can't share product keys between different versions.

  • Some help with migrating exchange 2010 to exchange 2013 + installing another exchange 2010 to be edge-forefront-proxy server

    Hi guys (and girls)!
Hear me up. The idea is like this:
A friend of mine has currently Exchange 2010 SP3 in his environment with Forefront Protection installed on it. As we all know Forefront Protection is discontinued in Exchange 2013 environment because Exchange 2013 on-premisses is using integrated tool for
doing that, but a friend of mine would really like to stick with Forefront Protection because it is "much better tool" then integrated stuff in 2013.
Ok, so here's the idea. Exchange 2010 SP3 with Forefront is installed on Phisical machine (so, not virtualized) on 2008 r2 std OS. We decided to move to Exchange 2013 because we wanted to achieve DAG on Exchange 2010 but we realized that is not possible
because 2008 R2 STD OS does not support failover-clustering functionality, but you are able to achieve that on newer OS for example 2012? Ok, so we bought another server, where we are planing to install Vmware Esxi and put two virtual machines on it.
One Will be 2012 r2 STD OS with Exchange 2013 on it, the other Will be 2008 r2 STD with Exchange 2010 Edge role + Forefront on it. We are planing to move Exchange 2010 production server to virtual machine Exchange 2013, and newly virtual machine
with Exchange 2010 edge server will only be "a kind of Proxy server with Forefront functionality". What concers me?
Should we install Exchange 2010 edge transport 1st, or Exchange 2013? I think I have read somewhere after you put Exchange 2013 in production you are "unable" to install any previous Exchange versions is that true?
One more question about what happens after you install another Exchange 2010 with Edge role in production enviroment? Does installation effects a production enviroment, let's say we do just a clean installation of Exchange + ran updates?
Which roles do you need to install on Exchange 2010 to achive Edge role? Do you need to have all the roles install for having Edge server (mailbox, hub, cas?).

No it does not as long you don't make any changes on send/receive connector and do the EdgeSubscription. As soon as you do the Edge subscription there will be send/receive connector created, so pay attention how to setup the Edge Server.

Just install the Edge Transport Server and make sure you install ADLDS services.
as you have mentioned you are doing to install both Mailbox and Edge server on the same VMware - it is a single point of failure.

  • Beware of Linked Mailbox status - Moving Unity_server mailboxes to Exchange 2010

    Hi all -
Here is a problem I encountered that I want to pass along to you:
When partnering Unity to Exchange 2010, the Unity_servername, USBMS_servername, EAdmin, and unitymsgstoresvc inboxes are moved from the old Exchange to the new 2010 server.  Using the Exchange Management Console, the users should show up as User Mailboxes, not Linked Mailbox.  A Linked mailbox in Exchange 2010 is an external account, i.e. an account in another forest.  If this occurs for the Unity_servername mailbox, external caller voice messages remain in UMR (UnityMTA) and you will see many application event log errors.  In EMC you will observe the account mailboxes show in Disconnected status.
If this happens to you, here is the fix:
Disable the Account from EMC in Exchange 2010.  Note you will get a prompt that the Exchange properties are being removed but the email inbox is NOT deleted.
    Re-enable the account from ADUC.
In EMC, go to Disconnected Mailboxes, select the Unity mailbox and select Connect.  In the Connect wizard, re-associate with the existing account. Re-enter the user alias and complete the wizard.
    Restart AvUMRSynchSvr service on Unity.
Hope this helps someone in the future!
    Sincerely, Ginger

Thanks Brad :-)  I forgot to mention I discovered a number of Internet hits that say this can happen with Move Mailbox.  Here's the link I used to begin researching the problem (hint: go all the way to the bottom of the web page - http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/Q_26308671.html).  Got to give kudo's to this most excellent Exchange resource - has helped me a bunch over the years!
