Moving my keychain

I have tried to move my keychain from an old macbook to a new one and seemed to have messed it up, is there a way to recover original settings and start over again?

Time Machine is your friend if you back up with it.

  • Can no longer add to keychain

In addition to my login keychain, I use a non-login keychain named "base". As of yesterday, I am no longer able to add passwords to base, and I am a little suspicious of the recent security updates.
When I try to add a new password to base, I am prompted to unlock base if necessary, after which I receive the following message:
*An error has occurred. Unable to add an item to the current keychain.*
Could not write to the file. It may have been opened with insufficient access privileges.
    Relevant data points:
    1. The file base.keychain is -rwxr--r-- by myself.
    2. I've been using this keychain for about a year and a half with no prior problems.
    3. Keychain First Aid reports no problems:
         *Verification started*
Checking keychain configuration for nsteiner (user ID=8011)
         Home directory is /Users/nsteiner
         Checked login keychain
         Checked password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
         Checked settings for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
         Checked default keychain
         Checked keychain search list
         Checked contents of ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
         Checked contents of /base.keychain
         No problems found
         *Verification completed*
    4. Restarting Keychain doesn't help.
    5. Rebooting doesn't help.
    6. I can still add passwords to login.keychain.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

To clarify, it turns out that base.keychain does not need any repairing. It merely needs to reside in a writeable directory.
As for moving this keychain to ~/Library/Keychains, I don't doubt that the suggestion is appropriate in general, and that's certainly where my login keychain resides. But I use base.keychain for a variety of sensitive passwords which I cannot afford to lose, some of which have nothing to do with my computer. (Yes, I know this is what backups are for.) I had also contemplated FileVault'ing my home directory at one point, so I wanted to be sure I kept critical passwords accessible no matter what went wrong.
Perhaps / is a bad choice. Perhaps /Library/Keychains would have been better. Where would you put a keychain that didn't really belong under /Users?

  • After restoring iPhone 4S, Login password and Keychain password not working!!

    Hey!
So last night my Girlfriend restored her iPhone 4S running iOS 7 as new to fix a battery issue she was experiencing. Before doing this she went through and backed up her photos using iPhoto. She then restored the iPhone as new and when it had completed attempted to login to the mac as it had locked itself due to inactivity. Unfortunately she wasn't able to login and waited until I got home so I could try the password.. When I did get home I tried to login using the password but it didn't work. At that point I realised something had gone wrong so I tried all of my other passwords I had previously used with the mac as well as my Apple ID. None of them worked. At this point I booted to the Recovery 10.8.2 Partition and reset the password using the Password Reset Utility.
I then logged in and attempted to update the Keychain Password (This was the default "Login" keychain so it should be the same password as the Users password.). It didn't accept it so I went through and created a new Keychain to test if Keychain Access Application was working. It accepted the new keychain and I could operate the Application as if nothing was wrong (There was something wrong though, all of my passwords for many websites were stored in this keychain). I then removed the reference to the keychain and moved the keychain file from ~/Keychain folder to the desktop. I then reimported the Keychain and it still did not accept the password.
I called AppleCare to get a second opinion and spoke with a Senior Advisor who told me to just start a new one. I don't mind starting a new Keychain as I know the passwords for the main websites I browse, HOWEVER, I'd like to see if anyone knows what may have happened so I can perhaps prevent this from happening again.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nathan Freeman

    Tlix!
Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I'm quite aware that the restore of an iPhone should not have impacted the login password/keychain password. This thought has been further concreted after consulting a few of my Apple Fanboy buddies who are fairly experienced in troubleshooting issues relating to Mac computers. In regards to try a blank password, I've actually had the exact same thought and will be trying this tonight. I'll be sure to post the results of this to let you know what happens.
Unfortunately I haven't gotten round to making a TM backup of my device, primarily due to my current lack of an external HDD.
    Thanks,
    Nathan Freeman

  • App wants to use keychain after every restart

Every time I restart and then launch Mail, I get a dialog box stating that it wants to use my keychain (the one that was created with my user name, not the "login" keychain). Is then anyway to have this avoided by granting it automatice permission. Alternatively, is there any way to point it to using the "login" keychain?
    Thanks
    Nestor

I had simply moved other keychains to the trash. Reboot, and the password should be then placed in the login keychain. You could also move/delete keychains and passwords in Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access

  • Is it possible to completely disable Keychain Access in Tiger?

Does anyone know if it is possible to completely disable keychain access in Tiger? As part of security policies handed down from our corporate office, I need to be able to totally disable the ability to save/store any kind of passwords for servers, email software, other software, etc. Thanks!

    Additional Notes on Protecting Keychains
For laptops it may be advisable to store all keychains on a portable drive, such as a
USB flash memory key or a portable FireWire drive, if allowed by organizational
policy. The portable USB key can then be removed from the laptop and stored
separately when the keychains are not in use. Anyone attempting to access data on
the machine will need the laptop, the USB device, and the password for the keychain
stored on the USB device, providing an extra layer of protection if the laptop is stolen
    or misplaced.
To use this capability, move all keychain files to the USB storage device and
configure the Keychain Access application to use the keychains in the new
location. Remember that the default storage location for keychains is in each user’s
Library/keychains directory, but that the user may have stored keychains
elsewhere as well. To move a keychain to a portable USB drive (or to any new
    location):
    1. Start the Keychain Access application.
    2. If the drawer showing the user’s keychains is not open, click on the Show
    Keychains icon to open it.
    3. Click to select the keychain that is to be moved.
    4. Pull down the Edit menu and select Change password for keychain
“X”..., where X is the keychain being moved.
    5. Click on the Details arrow to display more detail about the keychain.
    6. Note the Keychain Location and click Cancel.
    7. Pull down the File menu and select Delete keychain “X” where X is the
    keychain being moved.
    8. In the window that appears on the screen, select Delete References. Do not
delete the files; only the references should be deleted here.
    9. Open the folder containing the keychain as noted in step 6.
    10. Copy this file to the new location, such as a USB keychain drive.
    11. Drag the original file to the Trash.
    12. Choose Secure Empty Trash from the Finder menu to delete the file.
    13. In the Keychain Access application, select Add keychain... from the File
menu and open the keychain file that was moved. The keychain will appear in
the list of keychains in the Keychain Access application.
The system will now access the keychain file in its new location.
While this is for Panther it should be the same for Tiger.

  • Restore login keychain

Somehow the login keychain got trashed. How can I create a new one and set it to default. The old login keychain file still exists but is, of course, encrypted. It may or may not be useful. I created a new default keychain but it is a pain to type the password anytime an app wants to use it. Bob

Occasionally I will have a keychain run amok and my standard is to drag it out of the ~/user home/Library/Keychains onto the Desktop and reboot.
A new keychain will be created on login. I then add passwords as needed.
    YMMV
If you are uncomfortable moving the keychain, make a copy or rename it in Terminal as shown in the article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306862

  • In LR 4.4, can no longer add new photos/video

Windows Vista, Service Pack 2.  4 GB RAM.
I've had LR 4 for more than 2 years.  Worked just fine.  Have not used for past year, as I have been traveling.  Now, I cannot add new photos or video to my catalog.  I have tried using my usual method of "Optimize Folder."  Always freezes at 70%.  Also tried via "Import into folder."  Hit the same 70% wall.  I sometimes get an "out of memory" error message, but not always.
    Steps I've taken.
    a.  Reboot computer.  (Obviously).
    b.  Ensure that LR is only program running.
    c.  Moved a ton of data from hard drive to an external hard drive (since error message did not specify what type of memory I was out of, I wanted to make sure I eliminated "not enough hard drive space" as an possible problem.  I have more than 1 Terra-byte of available memory/space right now.
    d.  Uninstalled entire program, downloaded most recent version, and reinstalled it.
What should I do?  Not sure what else to try.

To clarify, it turns out that base.keychain does not need any repairing. It merely needs to reside in a writeable directory.

  • Safari won't load Secure Sites?

    Hi.
I am running 10.3.9 and Safari 1.3.2 on both a G4 17" POwerbook and an older 400Mhz G4 Tower. Neither can access secure websites?
I can no longer log in to my Dot MAc for instance? I no longer see the Padlock in the top right corner?
Very frustrating, I can't access many secure areas I need? Any suggestions appreciated. I have cleared cache etc..
    Bill

this was my previous response to the same question:
"this sounds like a keychain problem. moving /library/keychains/system.keychain to your desktop and restarting is the default solution, i believe (try searching for secure/https/login in previous posts).
if that doesn't work, you can always just move the file back."

  • How secure is OS X login?

I want to have my ibook's harddrive upgraded. This means handing my ibook over to someone for a few days. If my admin and user accounts are secured with really strong passwords (a strong password consisting of all the following: lower case, uppercase, 2 numbers, and two special characters, of at least 8 characters long) is my hard drive secured from exploitation?
I'd like to wipe out all the passwords saved in all my browsers (icab, firefox, explorer, Opera, and probably some old version of Netscape), but I don't know where they're stored. Are they all in keychain?
I don't want to wipe my harddrive because of the 200 audio books in iTunes. I just do NOT want to re down load all those again.

If you don't use FileVault, anybody who has your computer can copy all the files without leaving any traces. They will not, however, be able to get your passwords from your keychain unless they know your password, because the passwords are encrypted in the keychain file. All new browsers should keep passwords in the keychain file, but some might store them unencrypted, in other locations. If the documentation doesn't say, you could test by moving your keychain file, and see if the browser can still produce the passwords when needed. If it can, it is not using the keychain.

  • Moving Mail, Address Book and Keychains from Old Computer to New Computer

My issue: Moving mail, address book and keychains from Panther (old machine) to Leopard (new machine). Old machine (500mh G4 power pc) will not connect directly via firewire to new machine (iMac intel). So, I have to move the files manually via a firewire hard drive.
I am looking for a document that will tell me exactly which files to move. Can someone please help me find this document? Thank you. Dale
P.S. I have no issues with installing Leopard. I only need to move the mail, address book and keychains from old to new machine. No .mac account is available.

for address book: go to your old mac, launch ab, and go to file>export and export your contacts as vcards, select all cards before that, then bring that export file to the new mac, and launch ab there, then go to file>import as vcards and you should be set as far as contacts are, but not as far as groups if you have extensive groups. that would be the safe option. the other option is to go to homefolder/library/application support/address book and move that folder to the new mac. the only question i have is... is the database structure and files the same between panther and leopard, which is why i suggest the first option of import/export of vcards.
for mail, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/mail and move that mail folder to the new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
for keychain, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/keychain, you want to bring the file that is in that folder to your new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
once that is done, you may have to do some more steps with mail, once you launch mail, such as importing mailboxes. let me know if that is the case.
    hope this helps

  • Trouble moving  keychain to new system (iMac G5 -- iMac Dual Core (Intel)

Hi. I'm having trouble getting my old keychains on the new intel iMac. I renamed the old ones and put them in my new Dan/Library/Keychains folder. Then I opened the Keychain Access program, clicked edit -> keychain list, clicked the "+" and while I can see the old keychains, they are "greyed out", and cannot be selected. Any tips?
    Thanks,

  • HT4898 Why have Apple turned off keychain sync when moving to iCloud?

This was one of the most useful feature I found as I didn't have to remember my passwords when moving from one Apple device to another. I think its pretty daft that this has been dropped! So what to do now ? Any advice?

No one knows here, since we're just users - and no one every reported why Apple did this.  There must have been a good reason though.  But we'll never know.

  • Moving keychain data

My laptop is running OS 10.9.1. I have two users and I am trying to consolodate to one user. User 1 is the main account and owner. How do I move/add the keychain data from User 2 to User 1 so I can delete User 2 but preserve the keychain data? Thank you in advance for your help. Sam

  • Moving keychain

After many problems I dicided to make a clean install of snow leopard: I kkeped a copy of documents, music, movies, pictures downloads.
before to do this, I copied : keychain in general library and keychain in user library.... I put them on the fresh snow leopard, but seem doesn't work ??
    any suggestion ???

    HI,
Repair disk permissions and see if that helps.
Quit any oen applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac and try Keychain Access. If that didn't help...
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file; com.apple.keychainaccess.plist to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
Could you take a moment to click My Settings right side of this window and update your forum profile to reflect the update to 10.6... thanks!

  • How to use Keychain for multiple users on one computer?

I have a new Macbook Pro with Yosemite.  I just moved over from PC for my work computer and the Keychain thing is killing me!  I am a social media consultant so I manage multiple accounts for multiple clients.  I need a way to log in and out as them on many different platforms.  The reality is that I am the only user but I log in and out of different things as if this was a public computer with multiple users.
PC allowed me a drop-down option with each login.  For example the email box could be clicked and then I could select the client email that I needed to fill in.  The password would then auto-populate.  Is there any setting I can change to make this happen on a Macbook? I have been logging in, deleting the info in Keychain, then logging in for the next client, delete...etc.
Most password managers don't work because of this same problem.  Please don't recommend a password manager app unless it can handle logging in and out of (for example)10 different LinkedIn profiles.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Please read the warranty paperwork that came w/your computer.
You have 14 days to return the computer w/no questions asked.
You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support on top of your standard 1 year warranty unless you also purchased AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years of coverage plus FREE phone support.
Strongly suggest that you take FULL advantage of the above before it runs out.  Let Apple deal w/the problems.
