Moving Tags

I have Photoshop 8.0 on Windows XP.  I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 7 Professional.    All the pictures are on an external hard drive.  My problem is getting the tags to move.  I have followed instructions on the internet but either the intstructions dont work or what I see on the screen doesnt match up with the instructions.  Some of the tags show up on Imported Keywords, but not all the tags and some of the pictures that had tags no longer have tags.  I have since added a few picts and a few albums.  How do I get the rest of the tags to move the new new computer and still not lose any of the pictures or tags already on the new computer??

Copy only if they needed to be. If it is the same drive, then copying is not required. The warning I mentioned is for the hidden system files only, it is microsofts way to scare beginners from accidently deleting files that windows requires.
If you already had those files, set to visible, then you would not get that warning.
Let's say for argument sake that you have 3 hard drives, 1) internal on the XP 2)external backup 3)internal on the windows 7
Lets also say all the images are Canon camera raw and they are all located on the XP drive only.
The direction I posted earlier would let you copy and paste all the images which would be cr2 files with sidecar files or xmp files. Each cr2 file has a coresponding xmp file with the same filename. ex. flowers in room.cr2 flowers in room.xmp
In windows explorer you can select all files in a folder including sub folders so its possible to just copy and paste the pictures folder. ctrl-a is the shortcut for select all.
With the files and folders selected you can drag them to the external drive.
Now in windows 7 make sure the files are not hidden there as well.
Repeat the process select your folders and files and drag them from the external drive to your internal windows 7 system.
This process allows you to decide what folders and what files are to be transfered. Including the ability to do all at the same time.
However if either system is set to hide known file types those files will not be selected when you select all as windows explorer can not see them.
In this case I think the hidden know files types is more important than the system files. I personally like to make both visible, that way I know what is in the folders. This includes the database for the icons for that folder, that file you can ignore, but its nice to know what is listed anyway.
If all your images are jpg, tiff or png, then you shouldn't have to worry as the metadata and edits are suppose to be included in the original file. Yep, camera raw and lightroom will put your edits in the header of the file rather than edit the pixels. That is why both are called non-destructive editors. Anything you do in either app can be undone at a later date.

  • Moving tags in PSE 12

I recently upgraded from PSE 11 to PSE 12. In PSE 11, all of my tags were in its Keyword category.  However, the upgrade has placed my (hundreds of) tags relating to places and events into the new Places and new Events categories, where I can't find a way to edit them, to move them or to add new tags.  (My people tags ended up in Keywords and are thus ok).  Adobe tech support offers no solution other than to retag (20,000+) files but I can’t believe that even Adobe would screw me up so badly.  How can I move all of my sub-categories and keywords in PSE 12 into the Keyword category?

Add me to the list.  I have almost 70K in cataloged files.  I've been using Elements since before it was Elements (I forget what it was in the 90's, but at some point they changed the naming convention....)  I've skipped about every other release and just recently was very nicely gifted a copy of 12 for my birthday, and thought I might as well update from 10.
    What a mistake....
My tag structure was very well defined, honed over the years to work "the way I wanted it to" - whether that made logical sense to anyone else or not.  In reality, it DOES make logical sense, I have some of the same high level categories as Adobe thinks I should have - People, Places, and Events mainly - but I have other high level categories (like "Work", and "Website Images", for instance...)
I LIKE that structure. I don't want to have to CHANGE that structure simply because Adobe thinks I should.  If Adobe's structure is somehow better than mine, for me, I'm not seeing it.
My wife also uses our catalog, but is not nearly so intimately familiar with why things are the way they are.  All she knows is if she wants a picture of our three daughters together she can click their name tags under People, click five stars to get the best ones, and see a list.
The entire process now is confusing - having a tag list on the right but not being able to use that tag list to select (include or exclude) photos with those tags, is stupid.  Having to click the arrow to the right of the tag name to open up ANOTHER selection method in the top pane, then somehow navigate a confusing structure there, is also stupid.
Even if I wanted to live with that and just "learn it", I then have the same problem others have repeated above - I have tags that were imported and placed properly under the "People/Places/Events" structure, but I also have (for instance) a tag called "Detroit" - which is obviously a place but yet is now under "Imported Keyword Tags" - with no apparent way to move it.
If I could at LEAST move a tag from "imported" into the new structure (to put "Detroit" under Places) that would make it somewhat understandable (although I'd still grumble about being forced to do so by Adobe....) but I CAN'T DO THAT.
So, now I need to tell my wife (who is from Detroit), "if you want to see pictures that involve trips we've made to a particular place, you can TRY expanding the Places category and see if the place you want is there, but if it's not then go over to the Keywords category, expand all the sub categories there, and just poke around and see if you can find it..."
    Guaranteed disaster and confusion.
Adobe. Please.  If you're going to do this, at least implement some method of letting us simply drag a keyword from the Keywords category over to one of your OWN categories, or allow us to remove your own categories from every visible menu or listing and simply use our own.
I do NOT want to have to recreate all my previous tags in your own categories, then go through the laborious process of selecting each one in my own keyword list individually and re-tagging them with YOUR version of the same tag, then having to "remove" my own keyword and save yours.
    For 70K images?  NO.
    Seems pretty simple.

  • Moving tags from imported to People, Places & Events.

I have just started to trial PSE 13 and found out that when importing photos that have been tag into PSE 13 you cannot move any the tags into People, Places & Events. Have I missed something or has Adobe stuff this up big time. I used to be able to drag and drop in PSE 11 so why can I not do this here? I import a lot off photos that have tags on them already and I wish to put them where I want the tags.

    Hi,
This behavior is the same since PSE12. This is because, now we have different categories explicitly defined for People, Places and Events. Drag drop of tags from any of these main already defined categories <Keywords, People, Places and Events>to another is not possible now.
Now, if you want to try this workflow of yours, you can try creating People, Places and events sub categories within Keywords tag category and then you can drag drop your imported tags the way you want to organize them.
Please let me know if I failed to understand your problem.
    Thanks,
    Anwesha

  • Problems with moving tags

In PSE 10 I have lots of imported Keyword tags.  In this list are tags like USA ,Arizona, Florida,Utah Etc.  It's easy enough to drag Utah to just under USA. I had thought that I could then make each state, as a sub-category of USA.  But when I try this I find that Utah then appears at the bottom of the imported list & not under USA as I had expected.  Is what's happening correct or not?  Should I be able to achieve a tag tree which If one took it to even down another step be able to see USA on top branch,States like Utah on one branch down & then Salt Lake City on bottom branch?
I had expected to be able to use the tag tree as a way to sort of zoom in. So I would have the options of seeing all pictures at country, state or city level.
    Thanks in advance

I would suggest that you are right about the limitations of 'dragging'.
For instance if I were to create a sub category of Australia & called it India, the name India just appears at the bottom of the list of Places. This isn't creating it in the tree structure that I had thought would occur.  The same thing occurs if I were to create families under people.
The solution is to edit the india tag via the contextual menu. Highlight the India tab, right click to open the menu. There you can either change the level (tag, subcategory, category) or use edit, in which case you can tell that the parent category of India is Australia.
Using the menu instead of dragging may not be as easy and straighforward, but it is very flexible. You'll need some practice, but it's very powerful.

  • Any hope? Moving tags from PSE 4 to new catalog.

So I've been using PSE 4 for several years, and have thousands of pictures in my catalog (most RAW images). They are ALL tagged. I've been tagging these files all this time without knowing that PSE 4 can't really write tags to RAW files.
Recently, I decided to upgrade to PSE 7, and also move everything onto a new computer. Much to my dismay, I've found out that I can't just copy all my images to the new computer, and keep all the tags.
Is there anything at all that I can do to keep my tags? Those tags were the result of hours and hours of work (multiple tags per image), and I'm totally depressed at the thought of having to go through them all again.
Any help / tips on how I can accompish this would be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Thanks for the quick answer. It certainly did give me some hope, but I seem to be having some issues with the process.
I THINK I followed them fairly well, but this is what's happening:
I "backup" my catalog onto a network drive (accessible by both old and new computer). This takes a while.
Then, on the new computer, I "restore" the catalog, and specify a new location (local to the new computer), asking to retain the same directory structure (maybe this is bad?). It, again, took a while as it copied everything over. I verified that all the images were copied to the new computer where I wanted them. The part that didn't work was that my catalog was filled with all "empty" images marked as "offline". Clicking on them, it showed their path still pointed to the original location on my old computer. I tried to "reconnect all" images, but that didn't work (it just told me there were no images requiring to reconnect).
Probably something simple that I'm missing, but I can't seem to figure it out.
Again, I appreciate any help with getting this working for me.
    Thanks!

AND SO ON...FOR 64 PAGES WORTH OF CONTENT
    HELP!!!
    SGAREN

    Hello Sally,
First, I have only heard/read good things about the book Steve recommends. It is on my to buy list one day. Been awaiting a long deserved vaction to pick it up to read.
I approach XML files pretty much like I do any text file I am sent in that I will import or copy/paste a text file into a frame in ID and begin setting my styles. With XML, though, I first clean it up, move closing tags up to their logical close lines, remove spurious codes that mean something in HTML but don't necessarily belong in the XML file (like &#x2019 which is an apostrophe so I do a search and replace. But for &#xA0; which is a non-breaking space I simply search and replace with a regular space in general), and make sure the XML validates.
Validation is much like making sure an HTML page is formed properly. I use an XML editor (XML BluePrint) and a text editor (UltraEdit) for these tasks. If I had to only have one or the other, I suppose the XML editor is what I would use.
I always show the import options when I import the XML and make sure that I link to the file.
So once a sample of the XML is on a page in ID (via File | Import XML), I highlight text within a tag, say like in your example above, the Providor name, and make it like I want and then create a new style. I generally name the styles as per the XML tag. Later on, that makes mapping tags to styles a little easier.
Once I set up all the styles preliminarily, I map the tags to styles. You can do that either via the Tags palette or via the Structure Pane that will appear once the XML is imported. In both cases, it is found via the flyout menu at the top right of their respective windows.
After mapping my styles to the tags, I select the root element in the Structure Pane (the topmost element. In your sample above it is "providors" and delete it. This removes the XML in your ID file. But the styles and tags are still present.
Then I import the XML again and look to makes sure all the tags/elements are styled as intended. I then correct any errors/ommissions. Then...I'll delete the XML again and import the full XML file.
I can upload what I did with your XML sample above so you can compare it to your source file if you would like. You would then see how/where I moved tags. Now, moving the tags is only "necessary" to avoid all the extra blank paragraphs. That can be accomplished by ID's search/replace, too. But I like to start out with the XML cleaned up, so I take the few minutes to do it.
    Take care, Mike

  • Organizer crashed while writing metadata, now catalog isn't up-to-date

I have been tagging faces, moving tags around and changing dates on scanned photos in my 40K photo library. I was all finished organizing everything, and then asked PSE11 to write the metadata to files (ironically, to avoid losing all of my weeks of work). The organizer crashed while doing this, and when I reopened my catalog, it did not have much of the information I had spent so much time organizing. I'm not sure when it stopped saving changes, but it was at least a couple of days ago. My files all appear ok, but the database file is not up-to-date. I decided to make a copy of the database file so that I would have it just in case anything else happens while I try to figure out this mess, but the location found under Help>System Info doesn't even exist! I have 2 questions:
Is there any way to get back the 10+ hours of tagging and reorganizing work I put in; and
How can I find out where the catalog file is so that I can make a copy for safe-keeping? Currently the System Info says it should be here: /Users/my user name/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/Catalogs/My Catalog 1/
I am on a mac running Mavericks. I already went into my Time Machine backup to find a previous version of the catalog, but no joy. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • XML tag markers moved: Find and Replace causing problem in xml elements

    Hi All,
I am doing find and replace using GREP. While using the expression like $1, $2 (Found Items) in the change to field it changes the placement of tag marker. If the found item is a part of two of more xml elements, I am getting a serious problem while replacing it. (ie. The xml tag markers are moved.)
See the screen shot below, then you may get better idea. And help me to overcome this issue.
This is just an example to show you what i'm trying to say, there are so many cases like this.
Original text/ Before doing find replace
    After replacing
    Green4ever

    Hi Peter and John,
but it seems to me that the example is looking for any space that
follows a semi-colon and has two word characters following it, and
repalce that with an em space. I think you could do the same using look
behind and look ahead and not need to replace the found text.
Yes you are right about the look behind and look ahead. I'd like to show some more examples to show what the actual problem is,
    Original/Before Replacing,
(Consider there is another case here, instead of em-space some times normal word space will also be there)
    Using the Grep:
    Find What---------> ^(\d+\.(?:\d+)?)~m
    Change To------------->$1\t
    After Replace:
Did I make any sense? Eventhough this will not make any changes in the layout, my requirement is to insert the tab out-side the tag marker not indise.

  • HTML Tags not moved in PDF

    Hello,
I would like to print a report as a PDF and use the BI Publisher.
This functions so far also quite well, only I have the problem
I pass a HTML formatted text from a field CLob
and with the PDF output the HTML tags are not moved.
In the PDF document the HTML tags stands instead of a formatted heading,
    e.g.
<*h1> This is the heading <*/h1> (without stars)
What I must set / make with it I also a formatted one
    Heading agrees?
    Somebody an idea?

True - a PDF isn't going to support HTML encoding. HTML will just be seen as more text, and displayed that way.
You can strip out HTML tags fairly easily with a regular expression in your query SQL - this simply looks for text between < and > characters, and removes it. That should work for basic HTML formatting tags, but it isn't 100% (it won't handle <script> blocks correctly, for instance).
       select regexp_replace(myHTML, '<[^>]*>', '') as myText
from myTable... Implementing a method to convert the HTML formatting into RTF formatting is also possible, but not a trivial task - you'd effectively have to replace each HTML tag with an RTF equivalent -- eg, replace <H1> with the RTF code to make a larger font, replace </H1> with RTF code to return the font to normal... etc...

  • Photo files moved to new hard drive, need to re-connect photo tagging

Moved back catalog of photos from an almost full internal hard drive to a new larger external hard drive.
Elements Organizer is now unable to locate tagged photos on the new hard drive
Is it possible to re-connect the photo tagging ?

If you can go back and do a PSE backup/restore that would be your best and easiest approach.

  • Moving photos w/tags from XPpc to Vista pc using the free starter edition

I have a pc with XP (SP2) with Album 2.0 on which I have a few hundred photos organized with tags and some editing .... many hours of "tagging" invested by me. I just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium. All I really want to do is be able to import all the exising photos WITH their tags, do very rudimentary editing - primarily redeye reduction, a bit of contrast change occasionally - and be able to add new photos, locate, view, print (home or photo kiosks) and send via email my photos (Outlook 2007) to others. I do NOT want to have spend hours re-tagging all my existing photos if I don't have to do so. From perusing your forum(s) it seems that may be a very complicated procedure for a non-expert user (e.g. I don't know anything about "Access" and don't want to take time to learn).
If I can do what I want (import existing photos into the free starter program (3.2?)) and continue to use that program for redeye reduction and email as well as organize using tags - that would be great. BUT - seems very complicated to me. Perhaps I should use some other free program that will be supported for a long time, like Picassa, and bite the bullet of spending many hours "re-tagging and perhaps re-editing?? It's always a guess as to how long progrmas will be supported, and both Google and Adobe appear as though they'll be around. But any advice will be welcome. I wouldn't be considering Starter except I'm used to to Album 2.0, and have all those hundreds of photos already "tagged" and used redeye reduction on many of them (and don't know whether Picassa or any other program would recognize the exisiting tags and/or the redeye reduction and other editing I did).
Thanks for any help - hopefully in as non-techie language as possible.
    Steve

Well I am reading the progress on your situation, trying to pick up some info. While I do not use the Elements starter edition, it has pretty much the same issues with transfereing catalogs from one machine to another and/or migrating from XP to Vista, as the other versions of Elements have.
I have been going through the gyrations of moving V4 on an XP machine to V6 on a Vista machine.
As suggested in other forums, I finally went to a two step process. First I added V6 to the XP machine that has the properly operating V4 on it. I did the conversion process to migrate the catalog to the V6 program. Yeah it does convert, but half the photos ( thousands) are disconnected. Reconnecting one and then doing a reconnect all does not work as suggested by others. Reconnecting all manually just aint going to happen.
I have tried the external hard drive thing and moved the catalog to the Vista machine but the results are the same.
While I am not an expert software person, I do have enough experience to know where the problem lies. It lies directly with Adobe and they have dropped the ball and put a seriously defective product on the market and so far have not fessed up the their responsibility.

  • IPhoto 11 is moving my geo tagged photos

iPhoto has been moving my geo tagged photos to the wrong place, sometimes it is just moving a few of them to a different town a few miles away but after opening it today it moved about 60 pictures taken in Maui to somewhere in Idaho. Is anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?  I'm getting tired of having to move my photos back to where they were taken as it is not very easy anymore with the newest version of iPhoto.

Sorry but I do not understand your question
As to importing iPhoto simply copies the photos to the iPhoto llibrary - no changes of any sort are made

  • Moving photos and associated tags, etc. to a new computer

I have just updated APE-7 to APE-11 on my old computer which is running Windows 7.    The transition went well.   All photos and tags moved seamlessly to the new programs format.   I need advice on how best to transfer all of that to a new computer which is also running Windows-7.    You can think of the new computer as a clean slate, other than the fact that I installed APE-11 on it as well.
Question 1:   Should I begin by manually transfer all photos from the "My Pictures" folder on the old computer to the "My Pictures" folder on the new computer prior to using the "Restore Catalog" function or does that automatically happen when I use the "Restore Catalog" function within APE-11 to transfer Keywords and Tags?
Question 2:   I would appreciate it if someone would provide a link to an Adobe document that might give a detailed explanation as to how to use the "Restore Catalog" function, to a new, computer.   Or, perhaps a detailed step-by-step description of how to accomplish it in a way that all Keywords and Tags will remain associated with each picture.

You need to perform a backup in PSE7 and then move the backup you create in PSE7 (which includes photos and the catalog and associated files) to the new computer, then restore.

  • Anchor tag-line moving on hover in IE6.

    Hi Folks,
Does anybody know if there is an issue with IE6 anchor tag
    lines moving on hover?
I've got a sliding panel widget with an anchor tag line
    inside of an AP DIV TR TD (first | previous | next | last);
initially displaying skewed, but then popping into perfect position
as soon as the mouse hovers over one of the links; Then slides the
    panels
fine, then goes back to the skewed position until it's
hovered on again... This problem is not occuring in IE7, FF, N9.
    - GR

Solved it by putting a width and height on the parent table.
I guess IE6 is not as forgiving as IE7...
