Moving Target DB and Abstract Schema

I apologize in advance for seeming clueless. My explanation is this: There is no money. I have inexperience staff. I've been away from building architectures too long to be specific. I can't buy a contractor. I need some advice.
We are converting many Access applications to Java/J2EE/AnyRerelationalDB The way we have planned to approach this is to divide the DBs into various classes, say Personnel records, Vehicles, ...so on). These DBs will be moving targets that will change as we are able to discover Access applications that add/change features to whatever class of DB we're working with at the moment.
My goal is to eliminate changing each and every App everytime some DB parameter changes (DBMS, changed attribute, ..., etc). I think EBJ/abstract schemas will let me to get a generic view of the DB and insulate the App from the very real possibility of changing DB parameters.
I need some help verifying this or pointing me in a better direction.
Thanks for your help,
Bob

Let me frame it in another context to illuminate how dubious this sounds:
I want to build house with curved glass walls, high vaulted ceilings perched on a steep hillside. There is no money. I have inexperienced staff. I've been away from building houses too long to be specific. I can't buy a contractor.
My goal is to eliminate changing each and every App

will let me to get a generic view of the DB and
insulate the App from the very real possibility of
changing DB parameters. If you use an EJB layer than supports XDoclet or other portable CMP, yes, it will do this. However, it's not a simple and it your table structure changes significantly, your EJB will not work autmatically. The fact of the matter is that EJB is pretty complex and requires a lot of esoteric knowledge. Many EBJ projects have failed or produced terrible results. If you don't have any very capable developer/designers and/or have no developers with solid EJB experience I would under no circustances attempt this. EBJ is often overkill anyway. The real point of EJB is to help with distributed computing, not to abstract away the DB schema.
I simple approach that many people overlook is to use stored procedures. Stored procedures create a layer of abstraction between your code and the DB such that the DB can change without changing the code.

I think your best option is to implement CMP entity beans with a facade of services (business logic) that access the beans as tables in a DB. The only advantage of doing this will be the DB vendor independence and transparency because you define static queries in a declarative way.
I don't quite understand what you mean by DB parameters. But if you refer to changes to the database schema like new tables, new fields or changes to existing fields, you still need to align those changes with the attribuites in your application.

  • What is the impact on an Exchange server when moving FSMO role and schema master into another DC?

What is the impact on an Exchange server when moving FSMO role and schema master into another DC? What do we have to do on exchange after performing a such task?
I had 1 DC (Windows server 2008 R2), 1 Exchange 2010 SP3. I install a new DC (Windows server 2008 R2). I then move all the FSMO role including the schema master role into the NEW DC. I check to be sure that the new DC is a GC as well.
I shutdown the old DC and my Exchange server was not working properly and specially Exchange Management Shell. It start working again after I turn up the older DC.
I am wondering why Exchange did not recognize the new DC, even after moving all the roles on it.
I am looking to hearing from you guys.
    Thanks a lot

if you only have 1 DC, you might need to cycle the AD Topology service after shutting the one down.
Also, take a look in the windows logs, there should be an event where Exchange goes to discover Domain Controllers, make sure both are listed there.  You can probably force that by cycling AD topology (this will take all services down so be careful
    when you do it)

Short of trying to then reverse-engineer the objects that are in the dump file (I believe Data Pump export files contain some XML representations of DDL in addition to various binary bits, making it potentially possible to try to scan the dump file for the object definitions), I would tend to assume that the export didn't include those type definitions.
Since it looks like you're trying to set up the sample schemas, is there a reason that you wouldn't just run the sample schema setup scripts on the destination database? Why are you using Data Pump in the first place?

    Hi,
I`m getting error message like "None of the apps in your project can be activated in the target. The manifest file of one or more apps contain API sets or Office applications that are not supported by

    Hi Satosh Sutar,
Based on the description, you got the error message when you update the apps from version 1.0 to 1.1.
From the error message, it seems the menifest include some settings no allowed in the new version. Would you mind sharing more detail about how you update the project?
And here is an article about updating apps for Office and menifest schema files in the project for your reference:

  • Physical Schema and logical schema

    Hi,
When creating the data server in the topology corresponding to the appropriate technology we are creating a physical schema. But then why do we need to create logical schema. Is it created for execution of the interface? And can multiple physical schemas be mapped to same logical schema?

    Hi
Physical schema represents the actual connection to the data source or data target. Logical schema represents the logical name associated to that source or target.
One logical schema can be associated with multiple physical schema along with context, i.e. one logical schema is associated with different physical schema using different context.
It can be understood with following example:
You have 3 environments: Dev, QA, Prod, each having different database servers as DB1, DB2, DB3, respectively. Similarly we have 3 context corresponding to Dev, QA and Prod. You create logical schema with name DB_source
Now you associate physical DB servers to logical schema (DB_source) for each context:
    DEV: DB1
    QA: DB2
    PROD: DB3
Now when u develop ODI interfaces, you use one context DEV which associates DB_source to DB1. While mentioning context for execution, keep it as "Execution". This means, whatever context you choose during execution, corresponding physical DBs will be used.
Thus if you change the execution context, corresponding physical schema will be used during execution.
Let me know if you have further questions !!

  • How to export a user and their schema from one 10g database to another?

    Hi,
I would like to export a user and their entire schema from one 10g database to another one. How do I do this?
    thx
    adam

If you want to export a user and the schema owned to the user, and import to the same user in a different database, or a different user in the same database, you can use the exp and imp commands as described in the Utilities manual.
These commands are very versatile and have a lot of options - well worth learning properly. To give you a simplistic shortcut, see below - I create a user 'test_move', create some objects in the schema, export, create a new user in the database 'new_move' and import.

There are many variations on the theme ...
You can simplify this. You can select tables individually. You can use a parameter file. You can transport all the constraints and data. You can skip the data and only move the definitions. You can get some help (imp/exp help=yes).
And, if it's all 10g, there is a new and improved facility called expdp/impdp (dp = data pump) which has a lot more capability as well, including direct transfer (no intermediate file) together with suspend/restart. Also documented in the Utilities manual.

  • What is "abstract schema" in CMP 2.0

I saw this word in the configuration dialog of J2EESDK 1.3. What's that?

Abstract schema refers to the persistent fields and relationship fields of an entity bean which uses container-managed persistence (CMP). You specify an identifier to refer to a bean's abstract schema. Then you can compose EJB QL statements for custom finder & select methods. So, if you have a student entity bean, let's say its abstract schema identifier is studentEJB. To find all students with CMP field 'name' equal to parameter 1, your EJB QL query would be:
select object (s) from studentEJB s
    where s.name = ?1
More information can be found in Chapter 11 of EJB 2.0 spec (really, it's not bad). Good luck.

  • Time Machine - Moving Target

I am running a early 2008 MacBook Pro 15" and have succesfully moved to Mountain Lion on the day of release. I run two Time Machines, one at work and one at home. The one at work has filled up and I opted to have Time Machine make space by deleting old backups. That is fine until fairly recently. Time Machine now has moving targets and my backups fail. By moving targets, for example, after preparation, Time Machine indicates, say, 3.5 Gb are to be backed up. It seems to go ok for a while, but as it nears the end, the end size keeps increasing so it never finishes and eventually, around 65 Gb of 72 Gb it fails. So I did a manual start of the backup and watched it. Next time around it wants to backup 3.55 Gb. It fails when both the target and have both crept up to 10 Gb. This is not happening on the home Time Machine disk, or at least not yet. Is my only option to erase the entire disk and restart Time Machine on it? Any other solutions? I still have one Time Machine, but I like to keep two (don't like single points of failure).

Thanks, but that is not the case. I usually do a couple things in Windows then I shut down the virtual machine and I usually turn off Time Machine while I am in the VM. I do this because in the past, when using the VM and a Time Machine backup is triggered, it makes the VM rather unusable. Still this doesn't explain why Time Machine works in one location and not the other, because I do perform the same tasks at home and at work.
I've had my internal HDD die before and a full Time Machine backup saved me when Apple replaced my HDD. So after waiting overnight for the restore, everything including the VM virtual disk was restored in one step. I have since upgraded my HDD to an SSD so Time Machine saved me a bunch of grief when I replaced a perfectly working HDD with the SSD. I like Time Machine so much that I found a couple of similar products for my wife's Windows machine and for my mother's Windows machine.
I essentially solved the problem the low tech way, I reformatted the disk and let Time Machine do the initial backup. Since the "old" backups were under Lion, and I am on Mountain Lion, I don't really need the old backups. I did a full verify, via Disk Utility before and after reformatting, the disk was fine with zero errors.

  • Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed

We are planning to Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed. I have tried using the AIR appliaction and it worked, But our requirement is NO INSTALL to the user machine for the silent printing. It is just from web page and silent printing to the default printer to the desktop/Laptop. Can anyone share your thoughts and experience with us. It will be very helpful..
For AIR : I tried the thread Re: AIR and PDF showing/silent printing

    Hey CodeMonkey & Ross,
Did you either of you ever find a solution? I'm stuck too, it seems I can get remote printing on all these PDFs to work but it just prints a blank page since I've been using Javascript in the browser, not Adobe's (they are Engineering drawings that I do not have permission to edit so I can't just insert code into them but I need to make work instructions). I've been scouring the internet for hours now, it seems that this thread is the only relevant/useful one at this point. No one else was trying to achieve this for similar reasons to mine.
    Thanks guys,
    Lox

I have no idea whether there is a causal relationship but since moving to Lion and iCloud, my iMac has become so unresponsive that I wind up having to crash and restart most of the time.  This is true regardless of the app I am using at the time.
The specs of this iMac are:
iMac 27 inch, late 2009 model with a 3.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 Gig 1067 Mhz DDR3, using OSX Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
I have Mackeeper installed and according to the scans I have run, everything is fine. No virus, no junk files . . . no problems at all . . .
Except that for all practical purposes, my computer isn't working.
I am nearly totally deaf and live in an isolated, rural area of NW Missouri and this computer is what I mainly rely on to contact friends, relatives and business associtates!
Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way as above. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.

  • I just moved to iCloud and now my email is not working on my non compatible MacBook, but all other devices seem to be working.

I have several Apple products, some eligible for iCloud and some not.  I was using MobileMe and elected to keep my email address after June 30.  I moved to iCloud and everything seems to be working except for my MacBook that couldn't be upgraded to Lion so not eligible for iCloud.  Now my email doesn't work on that machine.  What's wrong?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Delete your mail account from Mail preferences and set it up again using the Mail Server Information.
Some users have apparently encountered issues using this information in pre-Lion set ups (I haven't), Roger Wilmut has kindly provided instructions for those who find themselves with this problem.
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Tiger

  • TS3899 Getting the message "your mail could not be moved to trash", and keeps reappearing as not read or deleted.

Getting the message "your mail could not be moved to trash", and keeps reappearing as not read or deleted.

Did you have Hotmail set-up with Android prior?  I did, and if you did too, you have the same problem, and this is how to solve it.
From your desktop computer, the Hotmail (or Outlook) website uses the folder "Deleted" for your deleted messages as default.  On your iPhone, the deleted folder's name by default is "Trash".
When I had my Hotmail with Android, it created a folder Trash for deleted messages, and it's creation was amongst all my folders.  So when you go back and look at Hotmail from your desktop, you will see a folder Trash, in addition to the default Deleted.  My Trash folder had all the emails I deleted from my Android.
That said, with the manual folder Trash that was created, when trying to set-up Hotmail now on iPhone, because I already had a folder Trash, it conflicted with the default "Trash" folder it wanted to created, so it didn't create it, being the reason why you can't delete emails, because it doesn't have the defaulted "Trash" folder to go to.
The solution is to delete the folder "Trash" from your desktop, uninstall Hotmail from your iPhone, and re-install, and it worked, the defaulted "Trash" was then created, alongside the "Sent" and "Junk".
