MPB overkill for me ? opinions appreciated

Hello all,
I'm buying my first Mac soon and keep bouncing between the mid priced MB or the 2.16 MBP, here is what I will use it for, do you feel the MBP will be overkill ? Also - I want to start with 1GB of memory and add more only if needed.
Browse the internet
pay bill online
print documents in openoffice - use their writer/calc
email
download pictures off my digital camera to view/print
must take online classes with XP - most likely use bootcamp
I do like the independant video card, and 3GB max memory in MBP, but --- does it sound like the MPB would be overkill ?
All replies are greatly appreciated.

"No offense David but I think the Macbook Pro is a better build than the Macbook (what exactly do you mean by better built?)"
None taken. I said "in some ways". Namely, I think the MacBook has a more solid feeling keyboard, better display, no catch to get messed up, fewer problems with case warpage, and no issues with the finish coming off. Note that I said "I think" meaning that it's just MHO. Feel free to differ. But I have both the MacBook and the MBP in my house and I am very impressed with the MacBook's overall quality, esp. considering the price. For this reason, I have no reservations about recommending it to someone with the needs expressed by the OP.

  • New Mac Pro overkill for Logic Pro X?

    Hi all,
Is the new Mac Pro overkill for audio work? I use Logic Pro X and mainly use huge sample libraries with Kontakt, so I would get 64gb memory, a Lacie 10tb Thunderbolt drive to store the samples and 2 Apple Thunderbolt displays. Or would an iMac suffice?
I don't want to upgrade my old 8-core, dont want a previous gen 12-core, and the price doesnt matter.
    Thank you.

If you do want best ideal in performance for audio, then PCIe SSDs are great even now. And may really need TB2 to shine and share bandwidth.
SSDs with near zero seeks and latency and low prices for Samsung 840 EVO 1TB or 750GB are very appealing.
I would wait until - OS X has had two updates to refine drivers; 3-6 months for any needed changes in firmware for EFI and SMC (which seem to be a regular of ALL new Macs and Mac Pro models); even tweaks to production and TB2 chipsets and such, maybe even those new AMD GPUs.
Version "1.0" hardware and OS really, and of course vendors will now begin to really have some hands on and expect apps, Apple no exception - to need updates.

  • Are these specs overkill for music recording/video editing?

I haven't made any purchases yet... I'm still in the planning stages. I just need your opinion on this.
I plan on making high quality recordings using an iMac, Logic (whatever the newest one is), and a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 interface.
I customized my iMac and I'm just curious whether or not these specs are overkill for what I'm trying to accomplish.
    27 inch
3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
    Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Wireless Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
    Pages
    Apple USB SuperDrive
    Accessory Kit
    total: $2,447.99
I also plan to use this computer for video editing, so if you know anything about good specs for that feel free to let me now if this would be the right amount or too much. However, is this more than enough or overkill for the recording aspect?

Totally agree with mende 1 on this.
The 27 inch model is best for what you want to do.
Also, for video editing, you really need the fastest CPU and as much RAM as you can afford.
As I stated, either the 1 or 2GB VRAM GPU will be fine for video work.
If you decide to delve into doing video work and editing, I would, also, recommend at some later date, purchasing a couple of ext. USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt hard drives to assist with the workflow.
Having raw video footage on external hard drives leaves the iMac's internal drive optimized for doing the actual software video tasks by not loading up the internal drive with lots of raw, high GB video footage.
You can, also, store audio projects, iTunes and iPhoto libraries on ext. hard drives, as well.

  • Is HD camera overkill for podcasting?

Hi I'm a video producer/editor and a friend of mine asked me to start making video podcasts for a weekly music event at a local bar. I'm new to podcasting and wanted to know if a HD camera is overkill for making a podcast since the final frame size is considerably small. I own a professional SD 3CCD Panasonic DV camera and would like to use that instead of renting an HD camera every week. Does anyone think there would be any noticeable quality loss in the final podcast? One of my concerns is the compression process. I've noticed my HD videos compress for the web much smoother than my SD videos, which usually have more artifacts. I will be using FCP to edit and Compressor 3 to export. Any advice would be awesome!!

Compressed HD video will usually look better than compressed SD video because the source is oversampled. But your 3 chip DV camera should produce good looking video (and people are probably watching the podcast for the music content, not the video quality).
Low light performance might also be a concern if the event isn't well lit.

  • Any information for RPG creation appreciated =p

If you remember me, I am the programmer that made the attempt (half decent if you ask me) at recreating Scorched Earth. Well, time has passed and my next project lies at hand. This time a team and I are moving into the exciting world of a 2D RPG. I read this forum daily and have learned a lot from similar posts, largely though I would like to know how to effectively implement a nice tiled engine. Any tips would be very very appreciated (source code for tile engines as well), even more specifically any advice of these questions would be awesome...
-As far as layers go (background, foreground, sky) would JLayeredPane be a reliable option? especially with the use of Full Screen Mode and Buffer Strategy (if those two are good ideas as well)
-Any suggestions/rescoures for collision detection implementation
-Any advice/suggestions on buffering techniques so I do not have to redraw the backgrounds each and every time (such as circle-buffering)
    -Any other advice/resources
Please don't redirect me to javagaming.org as I have already been there multiple times =p
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Ryan

I have one tip: build your own tile engine by yourself. It might sound hard, but it is definately worth it.
I made mistake once and used 2d Tile engine code that was poorly documented and basically it made everything harder and resulted in failre of the project. When you build the engine yourself, the profits are that you will understand 100% what it does. Its easy to implement new things. And its fun. its not as hard as it sounds.
First I'd suggest deciding the map form. How the maps are handled. Are they arrays, symbols or crypt and the how the world would interact with the monsters and players.
Now you got decent idea what you ought to do. Find a way to load the map, then how you are going to move the map. Now figure out how you are going to draw it. Layers? 2d array? Now draw the map.
I suggest making mind maps of the classes and how they affect each other. Then you can specify each problem and solve them one by one.
I'd suggest that you'd code your own pane option for yourself. It can't be that hard and as for collision detection and stuff it would be helpful to know whether the game is turn based or real time.

  • Paging File Recommendations - Looking for Experiences / Opinions

    Oracle EE 10.2.0.1
    OS: Win 2003 Server x64
    RAM: 32GB
    Proc: 16x 3.5ghz
I currently have our system set to use a 18GB page (Across multiple hard drives).  The server has 33GB of RAM in it so I'm wondering how much of a benefit I could gain by uping the page file.
I've read recommendations from Oracle that the paging file needs to be the same size as the amount of system RAM and I've read that paging for windows needs to be 1.5x the amount of RAM.
Things are running fine at the moment but I'm always looking to improve the system. Just curious about others experiences with the OS page file and how they've set it because sometimes more is not better .
Thank you for your time and Opinions if posted.

You appear to have developed a case of Compulsive Tuning Disorder.  Your time would be better spent looking for real, measurable bottlenecks, not changing something just because it doesnt' exactly match some piece of advice that is itself just a 'general rule'.  Go get a cup of coffee.  Stop by the secretary's desk and flirt.  Re-read the Concepts manual.

  • Is Remote Desktop overkill for a home user?

I need to dependably control three remote MACs. The home MACs are local and the other is in another state. I may also need to control any of these while on the road.
logmein.com seems to have connection problems from time to time and Mesh doesn't seem to be a viable solution (plus I don't like MS).
I don't mind paying higher price for Apple's product and believe that ARD would be the most reliable solution.
I realize that using Apple's solution would limit me to MAC to MAC connections (couldn't PC to MAC) using ARD...
    What are your thoughts?

ARD could be a bit of overkill, it all depends on what you need to do.
We use LogMeIn for connecting to laptops out of the office, and for connecting to home machines from work/road when ARD fails to connect. Which, depending on the version, could be often.
ARD can have issues depending on your home setup. Because of my hardware at home and Comcast as my provider, I can only reach the machine that my router has to spoof in order to be able to even be online.

  • Library Setup Opinions Appreciated

OK, I'm finally breaking down and soliciting advice on the setup of my library ... because, frankly, the more I read the less certain I am about what to do.
I've just purchased 2.0 and want to make a decision here before moving from 1.5.
I'm running a MPB as the primary machine and the HD is maxed out. The Aperture library is at ## GB and I've got gig more photos in an iPhoto library that was never imported or referenced into Aperture. It currently resides on an external drive.
I'd like to keep the most-recent masters on my MBP and then move the other masters off to an external. I'd like to have all the previews on the MBP, so I at least know what's in the complete library and can at least e-mail the older photos.
I would then take the iPhoto library and reference that in to have "access" to those images, too.
    Does that sound logical?
Thoughts on the best way to do that?
    TIA

    Marc,
It sounds very logical. There may be a few things you should consider before beginning this re-structure of your images.
Since you are going to use Aperture for complete management of all your images then I will suggest that you make a very simple structure for storing your images on your external harddisk. It could be like this:
    -Aperture Images (main folder)
    --2008 (sub folder)
    ---01
    ---02
    -- 2007 (sub folder)
    ---01
    ---02
Furthermore, you may consider to rename your images, so that each of your images gets a unique identification. Unless you are a highspeed shooter, then this naming convention could work for you:
    "Date Time" -> 2008-03-21 11-22-33
This way your images will be nicely sorted within the folders on your external harddisk and it will be easy to find specific image files if you need to.
No matter if you have 100.000 images in Aperture all this can be done with a few clicks of your mouse. Here we go:
    1. Connect your external harddisk and create a main folder for your images (fx. Aperture Images).
    2. Open Aperture.
    3. In the Inspector window select "All Photos".
    4. Be sure that all your stacks are open. Stacks -> Open All Stacks.
    5. Select all images (Command+A).
    6. Select File -> Relocate Masters.
    7. In the Finder like window select the "Aperture Images" folder on your external harddisk.
    8. Select Subfolder Format: from drop down menu: "Image Year/Month"
    9. Select Name Format: from drop down menu: "Image Date/Time
Note you may want to change the naming format and you do that by selecting "Edit" and make any adjustments you want.
    10. Press "Relocate Masters"
When Aperture has finished relocating all your images AND if you have selected to rename your master image files then I will suggest that you adjust all your Version Names to reflect your Master Names.
    1. In the Inspector window select "All Photos".
    2. Be sure that all your stacks are open. Stacks -> Open All Stacks.
    3. Select all images (Command+A).
    4. Select Metadata -> Batch Change.
    5. Select Version Name Format: from the drop down menu: "Master Filename"
If the preset "Master Filename" is not available then press Edit and add a new preset. Pick and drop the "Master Filename" into the preset line and save it.
Be sure that "Time Adjustment" are set to None and "Add Metadata From" is set to None. Press OK.
    That's it.
When you import new images into Aperture then it will be a good idea to initially store those new masters inthe Aperture library and at the time of import to rename those masters as well as version according to the naming conversion you select to use.
When your library starts to fill up again then relocate selected masters like this:
    1. In the Inspector window select "All Photos" and setup at filter that shows only "managed" files.
    2. Select the files you want to relocate.
    3. File -> Relocate Masters
    4. In the Finder like window select the folder "Aperture Images" on your external harddisk.
    5. Select Subfolder Format: from the drop down menu: "Image Year/Month"
    6. Select Name Format: from the drop down menu: "Version Name"
    7. Press "Relocate Masters"
    Done.
It will be a very good idea to make a backup of your Aperture library BEFORE you do this re-structuring. Any error made will multiply very quickly.
    Hope it helps.
    Karsten

  • Software Opinions Appreciated

Based on the following, I really could use some opinions and input to help me make a sw purchase decision.
I have a couple thousand of images. All these images have been purchased online. The images have been separated into 2 folders... one is a CC'd Images folder and the other is a Purchased Images folder. The images are divided accordingly whereas the CC'd Images have been sent out to printers, color corrected and returned as CMYK images, and the Purchased Images have had nothing done to them after the online download and sit as RGB files.
MANY keywords have been assigned to every image in both folders. We need to simply be able to search and retrieve images for design - we do not (for the most part) do our own color corrections. I have been asked to research Lightroom, Bridge (which we currently use) and Aperture, do some comparisons. Again, we are only going to utilize the program for search, retrieve and image cataloguing. I might add that our scriptor wants to database all keywords and metadata, so whichever must be compatible with applescript.
Anyone have opinions to share on those three?

    Hi Eric,
There may be several keywords we would use as well as labeling and rating, but things like dates and orientation or actual photo information like res or colors wouldn't apply so much.
For instance, we may be offering a new 3 star fund and wish to target an audience of middle age white americans living on the East Coast for retirement investment. Our search may be one or all of the following: label: 3 star, middle age, white, american(s), 30-50 years, 401k, retirement... and the list can go on.
I am in the process of organizing and minimizing the keywords.

  • Question about measurments of MPB, looking for a new crumpler bag

Hi all. I'm about to order a Macbook Pro 15" 2.66 and I need a nice bag to go with it but I'm a bit confused about which bags will fit.
Firstly the apple website gives the measurements of the MBP as Height: 0.95 inch (2.41 cm) Width: 14.35 inches (36.4 cm) Depth: 9.82 inches (24.9 cm) and I assume this to be correct.
Then I looked at this bag which it says is custom made for the MBP 15" http://store.apple.com/uk/product/TR747ZM/A?n=macbookpro15&fnode=MTY1NDA2Ng&mco= ODE4MDUyMQ&s=topSellers
However this gives the overall measurments of the bag as: 28cm x16cm x3cm and 21cm x15cm
So how can the bag be smaller than the MBP?!
The bag I really like is this one: http://crumpler.co.uk/?product=CheesyDisco_&colour=Black/Blue_Black&page=details&productid=CHD-007&size=
    But this says: For 12", 13", 14", 15"W and most 15" laptops. (up to 27 x 34 x 4,5 cm)
Again this would indicate that the MPB 15" wouldn't actually fit even though it says all 15"w laptops!?
Can anyone help me here? I really want a decent crumpler bag does anyone know one that will DEFINITELY fit my chosen macbook nicely?

I would suggest you look at http://www.dpreview.com and also try some camera / photographic forums. This forum is really for the discussion of Aperture Software Installation, Setup and General Usage.

  • Question: Looking for honest Opinions, Audiophile answers!

I am interested in purchasing a PCIE audiophile sound card (for speaker/headset listed below), i have been using only on board sound on all my builds but i am interested in giving it a try for watching videos and gaming/ listening to music while gaming (overall better enjoyment/experience)
<font>Asus Xonar STX VS <font>Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD
Personally speaking i dont care for audio recording ect or voice changing options, i have heard the Creative card (Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD) is great for gaming and voice communication while gaming.
There is a deal right now for the "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD" <font>For $9 + freeshipping, I beli've it has an amplifier, but i do enjoy using headphones while gaming and on ventrillo ect with friends (and as far as i can see the amplifier does not work on headphones?) with the creative.
Asus Xonar STX specifically states it has a headphone amplifier, and am curious the difference in sound from anyone who has heard or tried either of the two.
I am currently using somewhat meh speakers and a somewhat decent but not TOP/Highest quality headphones
    Speakers: Creative T20 2.0 Speakers
    HeadPhone: Creative Fatality MkII Headset
I dont plan on purchasing new speakers or headphones, the speakers are never really used for blasting sound, usually use my headphones due to living close to neighbors.
My main question is the quality difference, especially on headphones, does the amp on the headphones really make a huge difference
The only thing i have against the creative card is that it has no amp for headphones i believe, i am curious how crap my headphones would sound on creative compared to the asus, if any?

Not that it really matters for your phones; 32 Ohms will run on anything?
In terms of volume - yes. But in terms of quality and proper prequency response - no. In fact its harder to dri've low impedance HP than high. And Titanium HD is better at this than ASUS's card.
Still its a good idea to upgrade headphones to something better.

If the card isn't shielded, you'll still hear activity on your video card as a buzzing whine in the background anyway
    Titanium HD
Isn't shielded (Creative never advertised this as an EMI shield), and still I cant hear any noise from card's jack. All this EMI shielding is just another marketing BS. Almost all interference comes from power sources and from ground. This must be dealt with apropriate voltage regulators and capacitors. And Creative has done this job. I was able to hear buzz produced by video card under heavy load only from computer chassis front panel jack. In typical PC chassis metal works as shared ground for all internal components and "absorbs" all "dirt". Cutting ground connection from front panel jack to chassis metal parts solved this problem.

  • Another AVCHD discussion - looking for some opinions here.

I have a client that does some of their work in-house and then sends some of the more heavy lifting stuff to me to edit on my FCP workstation. Recently, against my subtle suggestions, they purchased a Sony camcorder that records natively in AVCHD (as many prosumer cameras are doing nowadays) and spits out .mts files. They use Sony Vegas and seem to be happy with very basic native editing on that software with those .mts files. They are telling me that they can import that AVCHD stuff straight into Sony Vegas and do at least their basic editing tasks - I don't know anything about Sony Vegas but I would assume that BASIC editing (without compositing or filters) is working ok like they say.
However, when they hand me a bunch .mts files, I have to convert them to my preferred native editing format in FCP (.mov, Pro Res)
Am I correct in telling these guys that they should be converting that footage out of AVCHD even if it runs on their Vegas software simply with the reasoning that AVCHD is not an editing format but rather a recording or capture format and its painfully compressed? Basically, I am trying to reason with them that when it is time to import the footage on their end from the camera initially, don't just be happy with leaving it in the AVCHD (.mts) format - convert it to a friendlier 'editing' format - then send it my way so it also plays nice with FCP and I don't have to do any conversions when I get it.
Is my reasoning sound here or does my argument hold no water? Thanks for any insight.

Ha, X, thanks and I agree, unfortunately with this project I am not in a position where I have billable hours - in other words, I will get paid the same regardless of whether I do the conversion or they do the conversion. So that's why I'm trying to give them good reason to do it themselves because this is not one of my normal clients and the arrangement we have gives me huge incentive to do as little work for them as I can, as fast as I can, but still turn out a respectable product.
It sounds like I will use some kind of conversion software to get to ProRes then. Correct me if I'm wrong but when you guys mention that Vegas might work with other format/codecs that FCP doesn't like, I was of the understanding that across the board with editing software, you were going to at some point be limited in editing performance if you were trying to edit a format that was highly compressed - like if you began adding effects or layering multiple tracks of video or something - like if you try to edit h.264 natively in FCP eventually things really start to bog down.
Thanks everyone for the comments - I welcome any further perspective here.

  • Opinions appreciated - new vs. current production

    Hello all,
I'm a soon to be new Mac user, I was bit by the Mac bug late 2005 when a co-worker had is 17" Powerbook at work. Since then I have been reading/watching hardware, news, getting educated, visiting my local Apple store, etc.....
Now ---- I'm financially ready for a 15" MBP. But since I don't know Apple the way many of you do, I was wondering if you can share your experiences, on the following -------
Is it best to buy hardware that is in production and got any bugs worked out, or safe to buy something new. Say if the MBP may be re-designed with new hardware in the next few months, would that be a safe bet or better with the current MBP production.
Also software ---- how is new software, better to use what is currently out, are there growing pains ?
I'm hope this does not get sensored, as I will buy hardware no matter what, but just wondering what the safest route is - best to buy what is currently out or safe to wait and get the latest.
I'm not in dire need for a notebook today, I can easily wait a few more months if many feel it's safe to get the latest technology.
    Thanks,
    Bob

With any hardware you buy at anytime, there is a risk you might get a lemon, but the risk is so small, that you likely won't. Given the fact that notebooks do have a tendency to break down more often I recommend at least getting AppleCare before your year is out, and don't wait till the the 11th month to get it either as it may not process in time. Contrary to popular belief there is no more risk from a Rev A than there is from the end of a line at getting a problem. I've had both. This board is primarily a problem solving board, so you will get a bias towards to the people who have had problems. Those who haven't rarely post.
Another truth about buying Macs, is that no Mac has thus far come with the ability to boot an older operating system than the discs which came with it. Thus if you wait until Leopard is released, you'll wait until the software has caught up with Leopard compatibility. Tiger having been out now for a year and a half you'll find the majority of good Mac titles as Tiger compatible. Even better, you'll find quite a few titles support Universal, which means they are fully native to the MacBook Pro. Rosetta titles aren't as much, and Mac OS 9 titles won't work at all. I've written a FAQ* on migrating to Mac OS X which includes resources for compatible software and hardware:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html
It is anyone's speculation as far as what Leopard will bring since Apple is very secretive about its release so far. All anyone knows is on http://www.apple.com/macosx/
