Paging File Recommendations - Looking for Experiences / Opinions

Oracle EE 10.2.0.1
OS: Win 2003 Server x64
RAM: 32GB
Proc: 16x 3.5ghz
I currently have our system set to use a 18GB page (Across multiple hard drives).  The server has 33GB of RAM in it so I'm wondering how much of a benefit I could gain by uping the page file.
I've read recommendations from Oracle that the paging file needs to be the same size as the amount of system RAM and I've read that paging for windows needs to be 1.5x the amount of RAM.
Things are running fine at the moment but I'm always looking to improve the system. Just curious about others experiences with the OS page file and how they've set it because sometimes more is not better .
Thank you for your time and Opinions if posted.

It's not whimsical.  It's a valid point.

You appear to have developed a case of Compulsive Tuning Disorder.  Your time would be better spent looking for real, measurable bottlenecks, not changing something just because it doesnt' exactly match some piece of advice that is itself just a 'general rule'.  Go get a cup of coffee.  Stop by the secretary's desk and flirt.  Re-read the Concepts manual.

BTW, it would be really helpful if you would go to your profile and give yourself a recognizable name.  It doesn't have to be your real name, just something that looks like a real name.  Who says my name is really Ed Stevens?  But at least when people see that on a message they have a recognizable identity.  Unlike the system generated name of 'ed0f625b-6857-4956-9b66-da280b7cf3a2', which is no better than posting as "Anonymous".

  • Im looking for some opinions for games

    i use this mac mostly for work but i like an occasional game, i have lord of the rings and harry potter but its sometimes a little dificult to move around using the track pad all the time. so, im looking for a joy stick recommendation or other ideas to make games a little more fun???? and not so much work....any gamers???

    KOTOR is not working well on Mac (very slow motion in some levels), and not
    at all on Intel-based Macs (so slow it becomes unplayable).
    My favourites (working on Intel-based Macs) are:
    - Civilization IV
    - Warcraft III
    - Age of Mythology
    - Lord of the Rings
    - Worms 3D
    - Toysight Gold (using an iSight camera)
    - the Pangea games (in particular Nanosaur, Cro-Mag Rally)
    You might want to have a look at FPS games such as:
    Doom3, Halo, Call of Duty2, Unreal Tournament 2004.

  • Paging File Size requirement for Windows CE7.1 on Windows 2008R2

    Hello ,
    We are installing the SAP CE7.1 Java on Windows 2008 R2. The SAP installtion  guide recommends paging space for SCS as 1 Times RAM + 1 GB. However some of SAP note says Paging space is now required for Java only systems. what could be the best suggested value to go with .

    Hi Makrand,
    You can refer to note 1518419, where attached to it contains a PDF with examples and how to calculate the size of page files both for ABAP and Java instances.

  • Searching in file and looking for the next occurence

    Hello!
    I have a problem when searching in a text file. I want to find a specific occurence of an element and next time I perform the serach fint the next occurence. One problem is that the file is in some large (>1Gb) I cant get it to work. Please look at my snippet below:
    n = 0;
                do {
                    if (bufReader.read() == -1)
                            break;
        do {
                    line = bufReader.readLine();
                    if (line.indexOf(s) !=-1){
                    n = bufReader.getLineNumber();
                    System.out.println("Next:" + next);
                    bufReader.mark(500);

                    if (line == null) return;

    I had already explored the Time Series algorithm and the predictions are not what i wanted as i do not have the month and day sepecifications. The only measure i have is a year and a total for that year. And i have 5 years of historical data.
    I was an easy solution. In excel we predict using Linear Expression and that is not something which is straight drag and drop in the OLAP World !! The dataset that i was using with the logic of "scenario" etc was incorrect. Cleanup the fact table (measures)
    and make it appear like this:-
    The factsummary table looks like below:-

  • Question: Looking for honest Opinions, Audiophile answers!

    I am interested in purchasing a PCIE audiophile sound card (for speaker/headset listed below), i have been using only on board sound on all my builds but i am interested in giving it a try for watching videos and gaming/ listening to music while gaming (overall better enjoyment/experience)
    <font>Asus Xonar STX VS <font>Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD
    Personally speaking i dont care for audio recording ect or voice changing options, i have heard the Creative card (Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD) is great for gaming and voice communication while gaming.
    There is a deal right now for the "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium HD" <font>For $9 + freeshipping, I beli've it has an amplifier, but i do enjoy using headphones while gaming and on ventrillo ect with friends (and as far as i can see the amplifier does not work on headphones?) with the creative.
    Asus Xonar STX specifically states it has a headphone amplifier, and am curious the difference in sound from anyone who has heard or tried either of the two.
    I am currently using somewhat meh speakers and a somewhat decent but not TOP/Highest quality headphones
    Speakers: Creative T20 2.0 Speakers
    HeadPhone: Creative Fatality MkII Headset
    I dont plan on purchasing new speakers or headphones, the speakers are never really used for blasting sound, usually use my headphones due to living close to neighbors.
    My main question is the quality difference, especially on headphones, does the amp on the headphones really make a huge difference
    The only thing i have against the creative card is that it has no amp for headphones i believe, i am curious how crap my headphones would sound on creative compared to the asus, if any?

    Not that it really matters for your phones; 32 Ohms will run on anything?
    In terms of volume - yes. But in terms of quality and proper prequency response - no. In fact its harder to dri've low impedance HP than high. And Titanium HD is better at this than ASUS's card.
    Still its a good idea to upgrade headphones to something better.
    2 Celarion
    If the card isn't shielded, you'll still hear activity on your video card as a buzzing whine in the background anyway
    Titanium HD
    Isn't shielded (Creative never advertised this as an EMI shield), and still I cant hear any noise from card's jack. All this EMI shielding is just another marketing BS. Almost all interference comes from power sources and from ground. This must be dealt with apropriate voltage regulators and capacitors. And Creative has done this job. I was able to hear buzz produced by video card under heavy load only from computer chassis front panel jack. In typical PC chassis metal works as shared ground for all internal components and "absorbs" all "dirt". Cutting ground connection from front panel jack to chassis metal parts solved this problem.

  • Another AVCHD discussion - looking for some opinions here.

    I have a client that does some of their work in-house and then sends some of the more heavy lifting stuff to me to edit on my FCP workstation. Recently, against my subtle suggestions, they purchased a Sony camcorder that records natively in AVCHD (as many prosumer cameras are doing nowadays) and spits out .mts files. They use Sony Vegas and seem to be happy with very basic native editing on that software with those .mts files. They are telling me that they can import that AVCHD stuff straight into Sony Vegas and do at least their basic editing tasks - I don't know anything about Sony Vegas but I would assume that BASIC editing (without compositing or filters) is working ok like they say.
    However, when they hand me a bunch .mts files, I have to convert them to my preferred native editing format in FCP (.mov, Pro Res)
    Am I correct in telling these guys that they should be converting that footage out of AVCHD even if it runs on their Vegas software simply with the reasoning that AVCHD is not an editing format but rather a recording or capture format and its painfully compressed? Basically, I am trying to reason with them that when it is time to import the footage on their end from the camera initially, don't just be happy with leaving it in the AVCHD (.mts) format - convert it to a friendlier 'editing' format - then send it my way so it also plays nice with FCP and I don't have to do any conversions when I get it.
    Is my reasoning sound here or does my argument hold no water? Thanks for any insight.

    Ha, X, thanks and I agree, unfortunately with this project I am not in a position where I have billable hours - in other words, I will get paid the same regardless of whether I do the conversion or they do the conversion. So that's why I'm trying to give them good reason to do it themselves because this is not one of my normal clients and the arrangement we have gives me huge incentive to do as little work for them as I can, as fast as I can, but still turn out a respectable product.
    It sounds like I will use some kind of conversion software to get to ProRes then. Correct me if I'm wrong but when you guys mention that Vegas might work with other format/codecs that FCP doesn't like, I was of the understanding that across the board with editing software, you were going to at some point be limited in editing performance if you were trying to edit a format that was highly compressed - like if you began adding effects or layering multiple tracks of video or something - like if you try to edit h.264 natively in FCP eventually things really start to bog down.
    Thanks everyone for the comments - I welcome any further perspective here.

  • Looking for experience of QuickTime API for Windows

    Hello,
    I have an application which calls the QuickTime JAVA API provided by Apple.
    Every time I'm trying to update to a new QuickTime version (for example to QT 7.6.1), I got compatibility problems.
    It seems the API have not been changed since 2003.
    Is there an alternate way that to connect to QT from the Apple java API ?
    Is there a good soul around there to share his/her experience with me ?
    Thanks
    Gege

    You should ask your questions on the Quicktime Java API mailing list:
    http://lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/quicktime-java
    Though it is almost equally unsupported by its originators as JMF, QTJ does work for 90% of what it promises rather than just 10. I'm sure people on the mentioned list can help you out. Usually mpg - and millions of other formats - work just fine in Quicktime java.

  • Looking for experience with Wireless Printserver

    Hello all!
    I would like to connect my HP PSC 2171 to my iMAC (10.4.7) and my 2 WinXP LapTops via a wireless printserver.
    As I fear heavy problems and unreliable print service, I would like to ask the expierenced users for their opinion and recommendations.
    Do have any tips on the hardware? Can I rely on the printservice just as the printer would be connected locally?
    Thx for your info!
    iMac g5 20 2GB   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Using a print server requires using the CUPS comm protocols included in OS X. This brings with it driver problems:
    Network printing/Windows printing only works with a driver that was meant for network printing. To use the OS X built-in CUPS network choices, you need a CUPS driver. For postscript printers, it's not an issue, because postscript is the native output of OS X, and can easily be routed to the various choices in Printer Setup.
    Non-postscript printers are Very Different. Except for Brother, no manufacturer has provided CUPS drivers. Instead, what you get is Carbonized, OS9 legacy drivers, that have the comm protocol written into the driver (mostly USB). They can only print via local connection.
    **Exception - when printing via an Airport/Bonjour enabled print server, where the software does a port redirection, USB output from the Mac gets routed to the USB port on Airport Express/Extreme.
    I'm pretty sure the PSC2171 is supported by the 2170 driver in the hpijs/ESP ghostscript set:

  • Student looking for some opinions

    to all people who do programming as a profession:
    in general, is programming a good career to get into? as far as salary vs work required? is this kinda job hectic? what do you think?

    With a lot of coding going offshore, I think that now would be a bad time to enter the field. I have been doing it long enough that I'm hoping it won't affect me (unless I have to find a new job). I'm also hoping that the drawbacks of offshore coding will make themselves apparent to the pointy haired ones in a year or two. Just my guess though, anything could happen.

  • Looking for HA experiences for SAP on IBM i

    Hi,
    We are very experienced in disasters, it seems not possible but it is true: in last three years we have suffered three major outages, with big downtimes ( from 13 hours to 36 ) in our main production system, our R/3 which is supposed to be a 24x7 system.
    We started our HA architecture several years ago, using MIMIX to do a logical replica of our production database. It worked, but it needed so much administration at this time. So we moved to a hardware replica, using DS8000 storage subsystems and moving SAP to an iASP, we also use the Rochester Copy Services toolkit to manage all this landscape. At first we used MetroMirror, a synchronous protocol, because we still owned our machines and they were physically close. Recently we evolved our HA architecture, moving our systems to a different sites of an outsourcing partner, we were forced to change the replication protocol to GlobalMirror, asynchronous, because the distances.
    We know what is a 'rare' hardware failure on our storage susbsystem: it started to write zeroes on a disk, without practically no detection, lots of SAP tables were damaged. We also have suffered a human error that deleted an online disk and killed all the iASP ( first real tape recovery in my life ). And finally we know what is a power failure in the technical room of our partner. Imagine that all this failures with a database that is 3TB big. Do you know how much time is needed to restore from tape and run APYJRNCHGX or rebuilding access paths ? I know...
    As you can imagine we have invested a lot of money trying to protect our data, and it worked because we have never lost any bit of information but our recovery times are always far from the ones needed.
    I'm looking for experiences about how other SAP on IBM i customers are managing the HA in his critical systems, and if possible compare real experiences of similar outages. What are we doing wrong ? We cannot be the only ones...
    Regards,
    Joan B. Altadill

    Hi Joan,
    We run MIMIX replication for our ERP system/partition and 4 other partitions with BW, Portal, PI, SRM, and Solution Mgr in them.  There is some administration but it has been worth it for us.  We have duplicate 570 hardware in an offsite DC 35 miles away for failover.  We also do our backups on the replicated systems.  We have been running MIMIX since going live with SAP in 1998.
    Several years ago we used MIMIX replication to migrate to new servers during lease replacement which cut our migration downtime from 8 hrs for backup/restore to about 1 hr while we shut down the system on old servers, started up ERP system on new servers and checked all the interface connections.
    But the real payoff came in March this year when our production server went down hard during a hot maintenance procedure.  We were able to MIMIX switch to our DR server in under 1 hr and the business ran on the DR server for two weeks, while we reverse-replicated, then we switched back.
    We have subsecond replication so we did not lose any data and there were no incomplete transactions on the DR side after the switch.   MIMIX paid for itself, including administration, in that one incident.
    Hope this helps,
    Margie Teppo
    Perrigo Co.

    Made a restore to a new Mac mini and iTunes music is there but won't play. It states "can't find file.  Look for it???"

    I have heard of some people having a similar problem, which was resolved by a simple restart of their iPhone.  If that doesn't help you, you may want to consider de-authorizingyour computer in iTunes, then re-authorizing it and performing a sync to your iPhone again.
