MPEG 2 Conversion Looks Nasty

I have to get a DVD prepared for replication and I've been testing the MPEG2 conversion with a 5 minute clip from the movie putting it through Quicktime conversion in final cut pro HD. I set the bit rate to 6.5kbps and 7.5kpbs (as I figured this would be good for an 8.5Gb dual layer replication) and then set it to make 2 passes before converting.
I then compiled it in Studio V2, burned it to a Maxell DVD-R disc and put it into a brand new Phillips DVD player hooked up to a domestic TV set. The quality was acceptable, but I was still seeing a lot of pixelation (especially in the right hand corner for some reason). It just did not compare to any similar video from similar DVDs I've compared it to.
Am I setting too low a bit rate, or just using the wrong conversion software??? Can I set a higher bit rate as my movie is 2 hours 10 minutes long and I'm going to replicate to a dual layer 8.5gb disc.
Should I just put my video through a P.C mpeg2 convertor instead, because I don't even know if Quicktime is any good???

Yes, I do have a deadline unfortunately, which is why speed is almost definitely an option when it comes to rendering.
I used three different processes to create MPEG2 from a 10 minute clip of my Final Cut Pro sequence. I'm using FCP 4 with the HD upgrade (I think that's correct!)
1) Compressor - I set the bit stream between 7.5 and 8kbps on One Pass. It took 70 minutes to render 10 minutes. I compiled it in DVDSP with an AIFF sountrack (as the sound problems are secondary at the moment) and burned to a DVD-R Maxell disk. The results on a stand alone DVD player through a domestic set were superb. Couldn't notice any artifacts, or pixelation. However, for some reason my sound started to drift out of synch and got gradually worse through the 10 minutes. No idea why. The sound was processed through compressor, but maybe the error is the player or DVDSP.
2) Quicktime Conversion MPEG2 - I set the target bit rate at 7.5kbps, motion best and one pass. It took only 30 minutes to render the 10 minutes. Compiled in studio. AIFF sound compiled at the same time as the picture. Again, the results were superb. No artifacts, no pixelation. I think there was a very, very slight jitter compared to the Compressor version, but this could have been me imagining it, but either way, it had absolutely no effect on the viewing or the quality. Sound remained perfectly in synch.
3) DV Stream - There were no advanced settings so I assume this is just a quick way of outputting DVD content, althought the render time was just as long as the Quicktime Conversion. Not a particularly good output though, very grainy, but certainly watchable.
I didn't compress any footage in DVDSP because the manual seemed to make it clear that the codec was exactly the same as the QT MPEG2 Codec in Final Cut. Also couldn't find how to import an FCP sequence into it.
Anyway, I'm happy with the results that QT achieves inside Final Cut Pro, but it's the ease of use and the speed of rendering which seals it for me. If I had a broadcast monitor I bet I could find bigger differences, but this is good enough for me. Perhaps the VBR was the problem all along because with all my swinging camera moves and crash zooms, I didn't see any picture loss using the fixed one pass method. Just hope that 7.5kbps is not too high for a replicated DVD with a 130 minute running time.
I'll get onto compressing the sound properly now, so will follow the advice given and use Compressor to do it.
Thanks to everyone though, as you have helped me a million and the support makes me feel like I'm not stressing all alone.

  • Motion playback on production monitor through AJA Kona LH card looks nasty.

    Okay, so here's the deal.
We have recently invested in some shiny new things to equip an edit suite - a Kona LH card and a Production Monitor. Along with a Sony HDV/DVCAM VTR. Specs of our set up are listed at the bottom.
Pretty much all of the work we have done in the past has been non-braodcast - we're looking to improve workflow and quality of final output. We work mainly with Final Cut Pro, but also with Motion.
We have connected everything and have marvelled at how much of a difference it makes having a proper video preview from Final Cut (v. 6) as opposed to what we had before - firewire to camera to TV... Of course we were expecting this marked improvement.
We were also expecting the key benefit of a video preview output from Motion.
Now. We do get a video output through to the production monitor from Motion. But this is where it gets weird.
When we do a preview of an animation, it looks really shoddy.
As a test case, let's take a basic text crawl in Motion 3.
Static graphics look great, but when you play motion graphics, the image quality is really jaggy and nasty. (even at full frame RAM preview, best render settings, full res - all of these options are apparently properly selected).
So we did some test exports. Usually we would export animations in the Animation Codec, with an alpha if intended for compositing on top of a video track in FCP... we tried a bunch of different formats - animation, photoJpeg, DVCPRO 50, Aja 2Vuy, Uncompressed 10bit...
All these play from Quicktime on the computer monitor just fine, but when playing from the AJA TV app to the production monitor, again the same problem. And then when you bring them into Final Cut, the same problem, even when you match the sequence settings and field order to the source video ...
In effect, it seems that anything generated in Motion just doesn't want to look nice on our Production Monitor - even when imported into FCP.
HOWEVER - if you drop the Motion PROJECT into an FCP timeline, all is fine!
We know the AJA card and the Monitor are working because of this fact, and because when you generate titles from within FCP itself - the same text scroll, for instance, it looks perfect!
I have also found when working with old composited animations originating from AE that you can get FCP to pump these through to the production monitor beautifully when working in an uncompressed sequence setting - or in an Animation sequence setting. (For an Animation sequence to go the the production monitor from FCP, the Video Playback option in A/V Settings needs to be set to "AJA Kona 625i25 RGBA" instead of "AJA Kona 625i25 8 bit" or 10 bit).
The above point could be of relevance...? The only Video Output options from Motion or AE that apply to our setup and monitor are "625i25 RGBA" and "625i25 DV-RGBA" ... are we supposed to have more options?
In short, we could work around these issues - it just doesn't seem right however that we can't get a decent external preview from Motion. A big reason for upgrading our setup was faithful video previews of animations from these programs...
We also can't understand why exports from these animation programs can look so poor. I can export a video with a text crawl generated from a DV PAL Final Cut Project with DV Pal compression settings and it looks massively better playing through AJA TV than our test Motion exports.
    It just isn't right.
    Please help. Pretty please.
For reference, here are the specs of our set up:

JVC TM-H1750CG Production Monitor fed via SDI (have also tried component, to no avail)
    It just isn't right.

Sounds like you are seeing interlace artifacts - in Motion's project properties, have you tried setting the field dominance to None?

How about posting a link to the QT v7.6.6 output file so we can see what the actual quality of your source content looked like and what results were actually achieved using your targeted settings.

  • Lines in pdf conversion look thick!

It's an architectural plan linked as eps in indesign the one I'd like to convert to pdf. In Indesign High quality display mode, in a "fit to windows zoom" I see very smooth and thin lines and everything seems perfect. I convert that page in pdf but in zoom at the same level I see very thick lines! I know they just look like that because if I zoom them everything is as it should be but in an aerial view isn't properly rendered.
Is there an option in the pdf conversion I should check? I can use both print pdf or export...
Here are the 2 results compared:

    let me know please!
    thanks!

If the lines are really too thick - as shown by zoom,
where the linewidth grows proportionally - then the
information is already in the PDF. Perhaps by applying
    'Fix Hairlines' in AcrobatPro.
If the original vector lines in the EPS a very thin -
which happens for instance by downscaling a technical
drawing - then PostScript systems are handling this case
like zero linewidth: the thinnest device pixel line is shown.
    In Acrobat use
    Edit > Preferences > Page Display > SmoothLineArt=Off
The line is shown for all zoom factors by one-pixel
    rendering.
For SmoothLineArt=On, the line looks considerably thicker,
but the visual linewidth is still independent of the zoom
    factor.
So far actually tested by CS2.
I'm programming plenty graphics directly by PostScript as
EPS', place in ID or PageMaker and export as PDF.
It happened never that a sufficiently thick line was rendered
    thicker in the PDF.
The remedy is IMO: use Fix Hairlines with a sufficiently large
minimal linewidth, for instance 0.3 mm.

  • Crushing defeat on MPEG conversion....Need Advice!!

    Hi folks,
I have been really working hard trying to convert a full length movie from MPEG-4 to ANY FORMAT that can be imported into Final Cut. After a crushing defeat today via a computer error that destroyed my file at the last minute, I am seeking advice, instruction, and help.
    The basic scenario-
    I am a film student.
I am in an editing class.
I am a hardworking student who takes my film education seriously, but I am NOT extremely saavy in Mac technology, even though I have grown up with Macs.
Out first hands on assignment in the editing class is to use Final Cut to make a "Trailer/Preview" for a favorite film.
This is NOT FOR THE PURPOSES of pirating/illegally copying DVDs. This is for the purpose of learning how to edit.
The film I picked was Ridley Scotts "Alien".
This movie is 2 hours long. (119 minutes exactly)
First, I had to use Handbrake to convert the original DVD.
I converted it to MPEG-4 quicktime because that is what our instructor told us to do. This process took about 3 and 1/2 hours.
Then, step 2 was supposed to be to convert the MPEG-2 over to a Quicktime Movie file (also known as an .mov)
This step 2 has been one of the worst ordeals I have gone through as a film student.
For some reason, converting this Quicktime MPEG-4 to a Quicktime/mov is taking my computer close to 72 to 80 HOURS. My computer at home is a Mac G4 quicksilver. I am running OSX 10.3.9 (Panther)...
Literally, my computer has been running 24 hours a day for days now to convert this ONE MPEG.
I used another computer, my work computer (a bad idea), which is a PC...It ran for over 24 hours straight, got right up to the END CREDITS of the film, and CRASHED at the very end.
for these reasons, I am giving up on having this great assignment turned in, simply because I cannot find a computer with enough RAM, memory, or computing power to convert an MPEG-4 to a Quicktime Movie.
WHY? Why does this particular, seemingly simple operation take a PowerMac G4 over 72 to 80 hours to complete?
    What am I doing wrong?
What file formats should I use to try to keep this operation down to a minimum and simply be able to import a film into Final Cut.
TO REPEAT- I have no intention or desire to Pirate/Bootleg, or Sell existing DVD's... I just want to be a creative artist with film.
Instead, I have to go through crushing defeats with technology.
What is the best way for me to go about this, technically speaking, just to get a 90 to 120 minute film from a DVD to an importable format into Final Cut Pro?
    thanks for your help

    Thanks Nick,
MPEG Streamclip IS the program I was using, in order to convert the MPEG-4 to a Quicktime Movie.
THIS is the program that had an error right at the end, saying the computer was out of memory. (This is after I deleted all kinds of programs just to give the system enough memory to complete the film).
I am seeking the best format that will use the least amount of computing power to change a DVD to a format that will load into Final Cut.
For some reason, this specific conversion of MPEG-4 to Quicktime Movie has been a crushing ordeal.
What am I doing wrong? What should I have done to make this process take less than 24 hours, 48 hours, or even 72 to 80 hours (!!!) for the computer to convert?
    Thanks for any advice.
(Once again, for the record, I have NO PLANS to create illegal/ "bootleg" copies of DVDs...I just want to create a trailer/preview for a movie that I admired)

  • AIC 1280 X 720 to MPEG-2 Looks like crud using imovie | buy compressor?

    Repost from "compressor" group.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2075563&tstart=0
I am a complete newbie to the video editing and compression world. Please forgive me and thank you in advance for your advice.
Here is the low down. I am using Final Cut express. I edited a 4 hours training video with screenshots and some screen capture. This is training video on how to use some technical database software so the screen captures are movies of my computer screen captured with iShowU. My FCE sequence and screen capture video was recorded using Apple Intermediate Codec 1280 x 720. When I try to use imovie to burn the footage to a DVD everything looks very grainy. It looks like crud. When I export to Quicktime in the AIC format looks great.
Since I am a newbie, I know I probably should have recorded my screen captures in another codec and not 1280 x 720. Hindsight is 20/20.
I have noticed when I export from Final Cut Express to H.264 it even starts too look grainy. I really need to actually get in on several DVDs in the MPEG-2 format.
So my questions for you is:
Do you think this is something that Compressor will handle? Can I take 1280X720 AIC and use compressor to encode to MPEG-2 and not get grainy resolution? I think compressor can crop instead of scale which I think is what iMovie is doing when it encodes from AIC to MPEG-2. I was using the iMove professional encoding and even tested it with a 30 second clip and it looks like crud. I know compressor offers more fined grained control. I think the grainy MPEG-2 results are from iMovie trying to scale from 1280x720 to 720x480. (I think)
Or should I go back and create a new sequence and re-record all my screen captures in a better resolution that is DVD/MPEG-2 compatible.
I am not sure if this is a screw up in my choice of capture resolution or if it is a limitation of imovie. I am just hesitant to drop the coin on FCP if this is not going to work. Thanks again

No, I don't think Compressor can handle it. MPEG-2 is too heavily compressed to handle compressing screen captures. It's always going to look awful. The limitation is in the DVD format and MPEG-2. Most training DVDs for software are not made using MPEG-2, but using computer formats with a runtime player for playback on a computer monitor not a TV set.

  • I have an A77 and see that DxO RAW conversions look different

Several RAW conversion comparisons on the web amongst A77 users are pointing to markedly better conversions and noise handling currently within new DxO 7 eg. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1037&thread=39970661
I know that Sony's RAW have historically taken a while to arrive at optimal conversions from previous experinece with my A350. When Lightroom 3 came along it was like getting new cameras for most Sony Alpha users with from RAW performance at last matching Nikon from effectively the same sensors.
Can you let me know the likely time lag till ACR and Lightroom will have an update to this initial default to really match the DxO performance. Otherwise, to be honest, despite being a Lightroom user since the original Beta stages and a passionate supporter and advocate, I may have to consider jumping ship. Working exclusively in RAW I do need to be using the very best conversions possible to make the best out of my investment in my camera equipment.
I don't know if this lag with ARW conversions is because Sony don't co-operate with Adobe early enough or whether because Sony is only number three in DSLR share it gets less priority within Adobe than Canon and Nikon, but some timeline on a revised version of Lightroom to address this for the new Sony Alphas would be great.
Many thanks from a long time advocate who really hopes I can stick with Lightroom,
    Cheers,
    Paul

    Hi Hal,
Many thanks...I’ll give it a try. Not trying to cause trouble as I genuinely am a fan of LR, but if they always lag on getting to grips with Sony RAWs it’s a major drawback for Sony users.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  • Jpeg export, gradients look nasty

Hey when i export the gradients is like its 16bit color.
here you see it.. its just a screenshot with the export by the side of the program. see the shadow on the left on her chin.
    http://postimg.org/image/8ljwbq2ql/full/
in dont see any way to alter anything in the export menu?
    thx... Kasper

That looks very much like a bad monitor profile. It's not just the banding, but also clipping to solid black.
Both Lightroom and Windows Photo Viewer are color managed, and they both use the same monitor profile, so they should display absolutely identically. But a bad profile often affects different applications differently.
As a test, try to view it in Windows Explorer, which is not color managed and does not use the monitor profile. To further test, you could set sRGB as default monitor profile in Windows Control Panel > Color Management > Devices (reboot).
The proper fix is to make a new display profile with a calibrator. If you don't have one, use sRGB for now. I wouldn't be surprised if you got a bogus profile through Windows Update (that happens a lot).

  • MPEG conversion

    Hi,
I have just converted 1,200 clips form MPEG to quicktime format to edit in FCP. When I bring the clips on to the time-line I am not able to add any transitions to either the sound of video tracks. I can only do so bey shortening the clip at either end to create a handle. If anyone knows how I could do this to all 1200 clips at the same time or generate handles some other way, I would be much obliged. I am working with FCP 6.06.
    Philip

Yes. An XML is a complete text based description of your project. After thinking about it, I'm not sure of an algorithmic way to change the in/out points of every clip to be the beginning and end of + 5:00 and -5:00 of the clip limits...
There are keystroke macro builders that would help you out.
In FCP, for each clip, you'd need only to load the clip into the viewer, press x, press shift i, press +5:00, press i, press shift o, press -5:00, press o.
If you could build that into a macro it would be a simple matter of loading each clip, then playing the macro.
    Patrick
P.S. Brian Conner offered up this link: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1046024 - although it's about batch capturing, perhaps the technique could be adapted to your situation
P.P.S. with the macro situation, you could add to the head of the macro: return - and to the end of the macro, select browser window (can't remember that keystroke off the top of my head), down arrow. Then you'd start in the browser window and start up the macro. The return loads the clip into the viewer, the in/out is performed, then the browser window is selected again, then the next clip is highlighted. that way it's all done with a single macro invocation (1200 times) but you might be able to loop it...

    Hey guys
I recently captured some HD video from cam in premier and it will only give me an mpeg file. Unfortunately this file is useless for after effects.  What are the best settings i can use to convert this file with out losing quality?

    Interesting.
I am running after effets cs4 on a pc. I shot on a Sony HDR FX1 and captured of a little Canon HD camera because the fire wire stopped working on the Sony cam.  If there is a way to get this mpeg working in after effects that would be great.

  • Workflow Suggestions: MPEG conversion AAC

I have to convert hundreds of MPEG files to AAC so that the iPod Touch will recognize my audio files.
When converting an MPEG to AAC, iTunes creates the converted file; this means that there are now two files (the original and the converted) with the same name in the music library.
What would be a good workflow setup in this case?
Should I move all the MPEG files into another playlist folder, leaving only AAC files for the iPod in the music library?
Would there be some way to globally find all the MPEG files to move them into another folder?
    Thanks.

I thought the iPod Touch didn't support MPEG-1 Layer 3 audio files. If it does, then it will save me a lot of work.

  • MPEG Conversion using Streamclip

I tried my very first conversion last night only to learn that the process takes a very long time. What did I do wrong? I had a 30 minute show (church broadcast that I produced) and it took over 3 hours to convert to Quicktime. I downloaded the software to my Windows Laptop and did the conversion on it. Was that my problem? Does it work faster/better on Mac?

To be honest, I don't know what the exact settings were since it was my first time. All I did was choose what I wanted to make, Quicktime movie. It was from DVD? Are there any particular settings to make it go faster. Ultimately, I want to be able to edit the broadcast with FCP. Currently we have a two step process that is very time consuming and we were trying to eliminate all of the extra time. We have to use the DVD and record it to a miniDV tape and then Log and Capture from miniDV Tape. We have to do that because the sound board is connected directly to the DVD Recorder and not camcorder.

  • MPEG 4 acting weird in FCP7

I am doing a small project I shot with my Sony Vivaz Pro. it shoots HD and the files show as MPEG 4 ACC 1280x720 24fps. They look great when I check them out in the viewer but they all have a large section of black at the end. This was a mystery untill I realized that the black had audio that was repeat of what was on the clip just prior to the black. Also, when the play head stopped in the black, lo and behold, there was an image from the clip but a little previous where the playhead actually stopped. It's almost like there are two versions of the same file; one that plays when the playhead is moving and another, a copy that is slighty behind the first, that is only visible when the playhead is stopped.
I have tried using Compressor to convert the files to HDVDCPRO, Apple prores, uncompressed 10 bit (plus a couple more) and all have various problems plus nothing looks as good as the original.
If this isn't confusing enough, I eventually just learned to edit the originals by working around the different images I was getting only to find that when I added fades, the shadow clip showed benath the fade, not the original.
Sorry for the long question but this is very hard to explain.

OK, your Item Properties say the video is 29.97 progressive, are you confident about the 24fps?
At any rate, download MPEG Streamclip (free) from
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
after you have downloaded it, launch it and drag one of your camera files into the square with the 5 dots.
Once it has loaded in, go to the menu File > Export to Quicktime.
A settings window will open, set the following:
    Then click Make Movie.
Once the movie has been transcoded via MPEG Streamclip, import it into FCP and make a new sequence.
Edit/place the movie you just imported into the sequence you just made and you should be asked if you want the sequence settings to match your source footage. Say yes.
You should be good to go. Repeat the MPEG Conversion for your remaing clips. If you have a lot, there is a batch processing function. Check out the MPEG Streamclip help file.

  • Why does SD 16x9 (m2v) looks soft compared to ProRes422 LT

Thanks for reading this post and ik you can help me carifying this topic, thanks again...
    Here is the problem...
    I start from a mp4 file (H.264 1920x1080 ACC 29,97 fps 13,08 Mbit/s), convert it to ProRes 422 (Proxy-LT-HQ) with Compressor 3.5.3
This conversion look great, the LT and HQ versions. The Proxy is not that good but that is normal.
If I look at the ProRes422 HQ version with QuickTime or MPegStreamClip it look great. Even if I resize to SD 16x9 resolution 1024x576, it looks great.
But now comes the problem. After rendering to a m2v file it looks bad. Soft, blured, no details. Is this normal or is there something I can do...
    Settings for mp4 --> ProRes :
      - Apple ProRes 422 HQ
      - Automatic Gamma control with NO interlaced (source is progressive)
      - No Frame Controle
      - No filters used
      - No geometry settings
Setting for ProRes 422 hQ --> SD 16x9 m2v. But this takes houres for 5 min of video
      - m2v SD DVD PAL Progressive 25 fps
      - Quality 7,7 Mbps Best for motion estimation
      - Frame control ON
      - No filters
      - No geometry
    Please can somebody help me...

    Some questions/comments:
What are you trying to accomplish and where did the MP4 come from?
Your expectations are probably way too high for DVD SD compression; if you want higher quality for TV playback, the best option is to invest in a blu-ray burner.
How are you juding the MPEG 2 quality? Viewing on a computer display will not provide accurate representation of image quality (invariably will look worse); evaluate image on a TV monitor to see how it will really look.
There's no upside to using 422HQ -  just bigger files - particularly if it's going to end up as an MPEG-2 file. Use ProRes.
"Hours for 5 min of video" is not good, but hard to put into context without knowing what your system is.
