MPEG-2 Movies Freeze on 1st Frame (still got sound)
Have QT 7.03 PRO + QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback (Windows XP Pro)
The movie plays fine in Windows Media Player but only shows the 1st frame when played using QT.
My objective is to export the movie to my iPod Video - the movie is muxed but I can un-mux it (elementary streams separate) - is this an issue?

What I have read online by independent folks testing is 13watts standby and 17 watching a movie, it does have a 48watt power supply which is probably peak power for a cold start hard drive spin-up. Still at 17W, that's more than enough to get nice and toasty if you restrict the airflow around the unit.
Aside from that have you tried a factory restore on the ATV? I have always found that this clears out the cobwebs when my ATV's start acting funny.

I have an issue where coloured dots (small squares) appear on my screen and it gets to the point where the entire screen freezes although the mouse still moves but nothing works and I need to turn the computer off at the switch. It doesn't happen all the time but is very annoying. Any ideas?
Reset the SMC and PRAM, if the issue continues then you likely have a failing GPU (hardware) that requires repair. To be sure take it in and have it professionally assessed.

I need IE9 to display 1st frame of embedded movie file
I have embedded a .mov file into my site. The movie itself, the first frame is a photo. On safari & firefox on my mac, the video appears with the photo as the first frame (which is what I want). However when I view the page on my mum's windows laptop using IE9, the first frame is black. The video plays fine, I just need it to display the first frame rather than a black frame.
The code that I have used is

AllyYeah.... works fine for me in IE9 also.... eventually. The problem may be that you are not waiting long enough to view the video, especially if you are on a slow connection.
The video file is NOT being progressively downloaded... meaning the entire file must download before the first frame displays. The reason for this is most likely that the MOOV ATOM is placed at the very end of the video file... so the vid player doesn't get the signal to start playing until the very last part of the video file is downloaded.
This is a common problem with many Quicktime video files. There are a number of ways to "swap" the MOOV ATOM from the back of the line to the very front... start here:

Another method is to open the vid file in QuickTime Pro and re-save the file. This will usually correct the index problem.

I`m having no luck playing streamed .avi, mpg and .mov ( all video) files.
The avi and mpeg video files freeze up upon start up and only show the first second of the video for the first 5-10 minutes. After that they play fine although with no sound. They also play and sound fine after being downloaded and then opened.
The mov files only show the sliding bar or , after being saved , the blank QT screen with the bar sliding and no sound.
Also , the QT "intro" on apple.com/quicktime (the timberlake video) refuses to play properly, it just comes in very "blocky" with only occasional sound bits getting through. The same can be said about some avi files, when they do work.
I have flip4mac , divix, 3vix, xvid installed. Tried perian but that completely killed all streaming avi playback , just a Q with ? mark. Downloaded AC3 codec and put in the QT folder. no luck.

The following is a work-around for .avi files. Not sure if it will also work for .mpg files.
Open the file with QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Info window (Command-i).
Note the name of the video codec used in the file.
Do a Google.com search for codec name +Mac and download one appropriate for your OS and computer.
Quit and relaunch QuickTime after installing the new codec.
Try the file again.

Another trick: If you have GarageBand installed, open it and then quit. -
Premiere Pro keeps freezing on one frame or will not play
Premiere Pro keeps either freezing on one frame or will not play at all. The program itself is not frozen but the video will not play at all. When I hit the spacebar to play, the play button flashes although it is going from play to stop and back to play very quickly but I do not see the video above move at all. I then have to shut down the program and start it again to get it to work. This is extremely frustrating and wasting so much time. Hopefully someone has a solution for me! Thanks so much.

Quicktime X will not play some Apple Mpeg 4 Movie Files
Hi,
Having a strange issue. Quicktime X will not play some of my Apple Mpeg 4 Movie files anymore.
The files open fine in Quicktime 7, but not Quicktime X.
I receive the error message "The document could not be opened. A required Codec is not available"
I have installed other codecs (Flip4Mac as well as Perian), but no luck. Have re-installed Quicktime X (10.1) and software is all up to date (running Lion 10.7.2). The movie file works fine if I import it to iTunes as well.
Called AppleCare Support and they could not come up with an solution. Does anyone here have any ideas?

Yes, I naturally assumed that you were having problems at some point with MPEG-4 Part 2 or Part 10 content.
Since I mentioned "from," I should have mentioned what the codec/wrapper was (it was captured into a .mov file using DV/NTSC via "Capture Now" in Final Cut Pro studio V7, via an analog-to-digital converter). What makes this confusing is that files captured with the same settings sometimes open right into QuickTime X with their audio/video intact, and at other times, only the audio shows up (where upon opening that same file in QT 7, we can see both audio and video). Interestingly, the problem files icon shows up on the desktop as the generic movie icon, whereas the "normal" files' icon is the first frame of the video.
May we assume at this point that the source video data is DV-25 with 16-bit Interger (Linear PCM) audio sampled at 48.0 KHz and it is the scratch MOV file that may or may not open/play correctly in QT X but always opens correctly in QT 7?
Ultimately, though, this is an unimportant point in solving my issue. Why? Well, if I can successfully open the problem files in Compressor (e.g., see/hear the video/audio), then I can theoretically re-compress (or "re-wrap?") them to whatever codec I want - ideally one 100% compatible with QuickTime X.
I took a test file, placed it into Compressor, and applied the DV/NTSC setting to it (yes, I know, the same setting the file already had). After re-encoding (which took very little time), the file was perfectly executable in QuickTime X - both Audio and video showing as to be expected, and no real difference in quality (not that VHS source is quality to begin with).
This sounds as if the "problem" file's container may be the source of the problem. As I don't know if your Compressor test is passing the data through to a new faile container, I would make an additional test here. If your version of QT 7 is keyed for pro use, I would simply use the "Save As..." File menu option to to create a new file container. In fact, I would probably just create a "reference" file rather than another "standalone" file here—a very, very fast operation—and then open the secondary file in the QT 7 "Properties" window to ensure all of the data tracks (1 video, 2 audio, and 1 timing) are present. If all looks good, I would then try opening the reference file in QT X to see it it now plays. (I.e., whether you use a reference file here or a standalone file, the object is to see if the QT X player will now recognize all contained data tracks whether resourced by reference or physically contained in/via the new wrapper.)
Could this have been answered without knowing the complete "from" specs? Probably… which is why I posted to the help forum in the first place - the goal being some other reader may have had the same issue, and had a handy solution or suggestion, saving me the time of experimentation (what forums are great for).
I don't know about you, but I would still be looking at profile/level combination settings to see if an an assumed MPEG-4/AVC video and/or AAC audio settings had been properly encoded for QT playback.
I have no doubt that there's a technical difference between the files that created this issue in the first place. But, the solution of re-compressing with an identical codec did the trick, which for this project is good enough for me.
Recompressing data is slower than rewrapping data which is slower than rereferencing the data pointers. But, if your solution works, then that is all that matters. -
How do I freeze a certain frame?
I want to freeze my movie at a frame so that I can put a caption at the bottom, how do I do it?

I guess, what I was confused about is, the terminology "freeze".
I thought "forsure" wanted to have his movie/clip freeze temporarily at a certain frame/still frame so he could overlay a title (or whatever) on that frame/still frame and then have the movie/clip continue to play from that point on.
Now from what I'm gathering he just wants that paticular frame's duration lenghtened (by creating a Still frame) so he can overlay his title (or whatever) and place it where he wants.

Video on Exported Movie Freezes During Playback, Audio Continues
This is a reoccurring problem I've found in some of my exported movies. After successfully exporting a project (in full quality), I view the movie in QuickTime player, where, somewhere in the middle of the movie the visual freezes and stays frozen on the same frame for the remainder of the movie. The audio however doesn't skip a beat and continues normally. The playhead in the QuickTime player continues without interruption as well. The location (or frame) where the movie freezes is always the same every time the movie is played. If you attempt to skip over the freeze spot by clicking later in the timeline, you'll successfully move the playhead forward to where you want but the visual is still frozen on that frame and the audio is fine as well. This suggests to me iMovie rendered the movie to a certain point and then, for some reason, rendered a still frame for the remaining duration.
The movie plays normally in the playback/preview within the iMovie app. itself.
The only clue I have is it seems to have this problem after a slow or fast motion effect is used. The frozen frame is generally the last frame in the clip that has a slow motion effect. If I go into the project and move the end of the clip forward to erase the troublesome frame, export, and view, the movie is completely normal until it hits another special effected clip.
This is truly a hassle and the poor solution I've found to fixing it ruins the synching I've put a lot of work into.

I think the problem is related to running out of memory/virtual memory, so on another post I saw rebooting & shutting down other programs before rendering suggested.
Exporting in a smaller size worked for me, but I didn't create this movie to watch in postage stamp size. I'm a new mac user - what happened to apple's promise of things "just working"? -
Movie freezes on the .mov file
Sorry if this problem has been addressed before, but I didn't see it in the first 10 pages or so of the discussions.
I have iMovie HD 5.0. I created an iMovie project, using a combination of photos and .mov files. The file played well in iMovie, and I was even able to burn the project to a DVD with iDVD. However, when I try to play the DVD, either on my DVD player for TV, or the one on my computer, the movie freezes and won't go any farther when it gets to the first .mov file. The only thing I can do is stop the DVD at that point.
The .mov files I'm using were done with my digital camera, which can take both still shots and small video clips.
I thought this was a simple process, because I've been successful before. The difference this time, however, is that I'm using .mov files from my digital camera instead of .avi files from the digital video camera. I suspect the issue lies with the .mov files, but don't know how to fix it. Help!
KristenWelcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes, a 1 G movie is way too big for a web site. How did you create the movie? Have you looked into ways to reduce it's size. Quicktime Player can reduce a movie's size to meet several criteria as shown in the File->Export for Web settings window:

That can reduce it somewhat. If you bring the movie into iMovie you can export it to a MobileMe gallery in multiple sizes to fit the viewer's internet connection speed and device.

The resulting gallery can be inserted into a web page using iFrame code and an HTML snippet as in this demo page: Adding a MMe Gallery from iMovie 09. This is predicated on you having a MobileMe account where you're hosting the site.

Still another alternative would be to convert the movie to flash and use that. Flash conversions are generally much smaller than Quicktime files. You can learn more about that at:

Exporting 1-frame stills from fcp
Here's my problem: I've captured lots of 1-frame stills from clips, stored in the Browser. Using 24PA Anamorphic Setup, wanting my final DVD to play 16:9 on a widescreen LCD. I then create a new Anamorphic Sequence and drag all stills to the timeline. Then, I export all the stills as jpg's, using QT Conversion to jpg. This works fine. But when I look at the resulting stills in Photoshop, they are squashed. Now, I can convert them to QT files and then get a nice correction by exporting the stills back out of QT, using Show Movie Properties>Visual Settings>Unchecking "Preserve Aspect Ratio">Changing Dimensions to 853 x 480. But then I've got a QT file which doesn't open in Photoshop. Yikes! By the way, in fcp, it doesn't seem to matter what format I set for the export--png,jpg,photoshop, etc. The stills always look squashed, compared to the video that they came from. Thanks for your help.
Drew13 or anyone! Oops! I just discovered another problem. I changed the pixel aspect ratio of all the 1-frame stills that I had exported from my 16:9 fcp project, and while there in Photoshop they look correct. But if I open these pictures in Preview, they still look squeezed. Then, if I open them again in Photoshop, I get this notice, "Pixel aspect ration correction is for preview purposes only. Turn it off for maximum quality." When the picture opens, it looks correct at 16x9 again. Apparently, changing the pixel aspect ratio in Photoshop does not "really" change the photo. My goal is to use the exported stills in a DVD slideshow,and have them look correct at 16x9 dimensions, but now I'm stuck with all squeezed photo-stills. Hmm.

i have been trying to import MPEG and MOV files to iMovie 08 without any success.
the movies i have already previously copied to my HD, or have been copied for me, so I am not copying them from any camera.
The funny thing is ... when i look into my iPhoto library from iMovie he does recognise the videos i have copied directly from my digital photo camera, but i can't just copy any MPEG or MOV files from any other location, previously copied, to my iMovie library.

Everyone will have this problem. It is the way iMovie '08 is currently programmed. The basic problem is that most users fail to realize that there are three distinct levels of support in QT based applications:
1) Playback Support - This simply means a particular compresion format can be played in a QT application. E.g., MPEG2 video is not normally supported without the QT MPEG-2 component while MPEG1 and H.264/AAC files are both playback compatible as they are.
2) Conversion Support - This means a file can be "properly" converted to another compression format. In this case, "muxed" formats like MPEG1 and MPEG2 (even with the QT MPEG2 component) cannot be converted to another compression format by QT applications and retain their audio content while H.264/AAC files can.
3) Edit Support - This means that certain operations can be performed on the audio and/or video content at the frame level. QT applications can, for instance, segment the audio and video content of an H.264/AAC file at any frame but since "muxed" files like MPEG1 and MPEG2 files consist of "blocks" of audio data interspersed with "blocks" of video data in a single stream, segmenting a file at any point other than one where a "group" of such "blocks" ends/begins would mean the loss of many "frames worth" of either audio or video data. AVI has a similar problem. Since the "instances" of audio and video data mesh like the cogs of two wheels, segmenting an AVI always leaves a 1 frame deficit between the number audio frames and the number of video frames. (Ever wonder why you end up with that one "white" frame at the end of youe file?)
Now we come to the various types of QT based applications. Many, like iPhoto and iTunes don't really look at the files when they import them, so they are more than happy to import anything they can read and recognize. If a file can be played in the QT player, it can be played in both iPhoto and iTunes. On the other hand, some applications are a bit "picky" about what they will export. iTunes, for instance, will not export/sync a file it has imported if the target device cannot play it. iMovie '06 is also different, in that it will import anything it can convert even if it can't convert it properly -- i.e., an MPEG1 file will be converted to DV video but lose any audio that may have been contained in the file. iMovie '08 takes things to a new level. Since imported files are simply moved/copied to "Events" folders in their original compression format, iMovie '08 first checks to see if the files contain both audio and video data that can be edited at the frame level. If both cannot be edited at the frame level, then iMovie '08 will not allow you to import it. Camcorder devices, however, are handled differently. Since most content on tapeless models are not stored in a QT edit supported format, these files, as well as HDV, are converted to an intermediate codec (which can be edited) as part of the import process.
As to digital cameras, many manufacturers store their video clips in generic file containers. Just because a Kodak digital camera stores its data in an MOV file container, it does not mean bothe audio and video compressions formats can be edited in iMovie '08. Many Kodak models, for instance, store their video clips as MPEG4/µ-Law 2:1 files. Unfortunately, while the iMovie will accept the MPEG4 video, it doesn't like the µ-Law compressed audio. Same holds true for many Casio digital cameras which use Motion JPEG/DVI ADPCM comressed formats. Once again, iMovie has no problem with the Motion JPEG video content but refuses to accept the DVI ADPCM audio. Luckily, users have two options here. They can either convert both the audio and video to an iMovie '08 edit compatible compression format or simply convert the audio content and "re-merge" it with the original video for maximum quality. And, of course, MPEG1/2 "muxed" files or M2V files with unsupported audio compression formats must be converted for the reasons already mentioned above. -
I have a catalog of personal M4V/H.264 files and have "set all" these types of files to open in Quicktime X because I find the default iTunes extremely annoying.
QuickTime seems to think that all M4V files are copy protected content and writes "Protected MPEG-4 movie" as the file type unilaterally.
What's going on with this? The UTI declaration is wrong. Will this in any way affect/block the use of these files in other applications or using externally? Not sure - what exactly does being labeled as "protected" do? (Something looming for iOS?)

Correct. However, problem seems to limited to your system. I have no problems playing files generated using the same work flow in both QT 7 and QT X on Snow Leopard platform or QT 7 on older PPC G5 under Leopard. Both are running under latest respective versions of the OS.
If you have a spare external drive, I would recommend creating a "pristine" minimal start-up system and try the same files while booted from that drive. If they work properly, then the problem is likely a corrupted main system or embedded QT structure in the main OS. If files are still bad, I would install HandBrake on the external start-up drive and make a few test files to eliminate the possibility that the files themselves were somehow corrupted during creation but this seems less likely here since the files "can" play correctly with modified extension.
Using the "Save As... Movie" (QT X) or "Save As..." (QT 7 Pro) option will copy the M4V file data to a "real" MOV file container (i.e. internals will match extension) or the "Save As..." option in MPEG Streamclip can copy the M4V data to a "real" MP4 file container. This would be a temporary workaround if you want your original data in properly headed containers that avoid your current problem (based on what you said about changing the file extension), but does not really address the real problem here. (Am assuming the files do not contain extraneous data tracks that MPEG Streamclip would filter out during the copy and that you have not mismatched the Snow Leopard embedded QT structure with the wrong QT X Player app.)
In any case, once the problem is isolated, I expect you should be able to fix it. -
Movie freezes while watching dvd
I have made a 50 min. movie and when I go to watch it the screen will freeze up (or I get the pixel blocks that are scrambled). This will happen at anytime during the movie. What is causing this? On some dvd players it will work just fine, then on others it will freeze half way thru, still others it will work just fine one time and freeze the next. Very annoying since I have given them away as gifts and now my movie is freezing up on them! Any thoughts?
+using Verbatim disk and I had the same problem. But burned on 4x reduced the problem and 2x eliminated the problem.+

I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility.
