MPLS implementation in a LAN

Hi everyone,
I have been researching MPLS for a few days now with the intention of setting up a network to test MPLS operations using 2651xm routers and 2950 switches.
Presently Iam simply gathering general information before I start the project.
If anyone has had any experience of a similar setup or just MPLS in general I would be grateful for your comments.
I would also appreciate any links to informational sites or case studies that you have found.
One of my main aims here is to test VLAN operations in a LAN usng MPLS.
All comments and or suggestions will be gratefully accepted.
Thanks
Janet

Thanks a million.
The documentation you provided proved to be very useful in aiding my understanding, which led me to http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/software/erx/junose61/swconfig-link/html/bridged-ethernet-config5.html
Just when I was beginning to think there was no light at the end of the tunnel...........
Cheers

  • Very urgent,  how to implement FTP in LAN

    Dear All,
Im in developing a project for my college final year project submission im stuck up with , implementing FTP in LAN .
Here what im doing is sending data thro FTP in LAN network . but i couldn do it .
I need help from you to solve this query .
Pls help me with method and ideas to finish it.

Your post leaves much to our imagination.
I assume you are looking to develop your own FTP service. I don't know if this should be peer-to-peer, or client-server. Do you need both components?
Sun provides basic service classes in the sun.* package - though there is a warning not to use them, as they are not a supported component of Java - meaning the methods may change from update-to-update or the class may disappear.
There are two types of FTP. Full-strength standard FTP and one based on UDP transport called TFTP.

  • New implementations possible in LAN environment using RMI

In LAN setup of a college, what are the things I can implement using RMI?
I have developed a gaming interface and Database set up.
Other than the above mentioned things what can I develop?
Please help me with your valuable suggetions.

    I did some more testing.
I setup a test environment with:
    -Exchange 2013 SP1 on win2k12 r2
    -Outlook 2010 SP2 on windows 7 sp1
    -Outlook 2010 SP2 on windows 8.1
    -Outlook 2013 SP1 on windows 8.1
Both windows 7 and windows 8.1 have the very slow upload issue to Exchange 2013. Windows 7 upload to Exchange 2013 is around 20-70KB/sec (bytes) via LAN. Windows 8.1 upload is a bit more responsive at around 500-600KB/sec (bytes) via LAN.
I changed the TcpAckFrequency to 1 for windows 7 and 8.1 and the problem went away. The upload on both Windows 7 and 8.1 was going at megabytes after the change.
I hope Microsoft fixes this soon.
PowerShell script to have this automated via GPO:
    http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/571571-outlook-slow-after-migrating-to-exchange-2013
    PowerShell Script:
    $strGUIDS=[array](Get-WmiObject win32_networkadapter -filter "netconnectionstatus = 2" | select -expand GUID)
    foreach ($strGUID in $strGUIDS) {New-ItemProperty -path HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\$strGUID -propertytype DWORD -name TcpAckFrequency -value 1}

  • Best practice MPLS design/configuration for small service provider

We are a small regional service provider and did not have MPLS supported on our network.  To start supporting MPLS, I’d like to get opinions and recommendations on the best practice configuration.
Here is what we have today –
We have our own BGP AS and multiple /24s.
We are running OSPF on the Cores and BGP on the Edge routers peering with ISPs.
We peer with multiple tier-1 ISPs for internet traffic. We do not provide public transit.
What we want for phase one MPLS implementation –
    Configure basic MPLS /vpn functionality.
No QoS optimization required for phase 1.
We have Cisco ME 3600X for  PE. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Not sure what kind of devices or routers you have in your network but looks for if you have support for labeled multicast for MVPN support. That will avoid other complexity of using other control protocols (like PIM) in core.
PE redundancy can be obtained by BGP attributes, CE-PE connectivity can be tunned using IGP or VRRP/HSRP...
You can have mutiple RSVP TEs for various contract traffic and you can bind various kind of traffic to different RSVP Tunnels based on contract or service with your customer.
RSVP-TE with link/node protection design will be of great help to achieve quicker failover.

  • Understanding Fragmentation in MPLS

We will be converting from a Frame relay to MPLS network. We will be implementing Voice on this new MPLS network. Currently we have FRTS set up between remotes and head-end to insure proper Fragmentaion sizes (among other things). How does this work in an MPLS implementation? IF my head-end is a DS3 sending 1500 byte frames out and my remotes vary from 128K to 512K how do I fragment properly to these small size remotes. The remotes will continue to us frame-relay for the last mile.

If you have a MPLS core you can do this:
    (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)
    FR----FR-------MPLS CORE------FR-------FR
    That is l2connect.
It basically encapsulates the L2 frames over
    the MPLS core.
You can do FR frag at the edge (1) and (2)
go over l2connect (AToM=Any transport over MPLS)
over (3) and go to (5).
(2)&(4) are an MPLS edge device.
You can have some prioritizations, on the
    l2connect.

  • 6500's or ASR's for MPLS

In our enterprise a project is driving more bandwidth usage and is making us consider deploy
of MPLS on proposed core gig e WAN links that would link South England and Scottish datacentres
We are considering upgrading existing North and South sited core 6500's to terminate these
new MPLS links. Or alternatively purchase new north and south ASR platforms as termination.
Are there any 6500-platform-specific MPLS dependencies/restrictions
to consider that would not be encountered if we used ASR's ??
    thnks
    martyn

existing 65's are 6509's with sup720-3B's but 'could' be upgraded if neeed. ASR model that could be used is to be decided.
Horsepower on the device to be used can be brought with money, which can be be got if necessary. What i'm after is a high level expert finger in the air compare on the MPLS implementations on 6500's and ASR's , to the aim of IF i deploy on multi purposes 65's might i have obscure issues pop up down the road, as opposed to a 'proper' ASR edge router MPLS
    implementation.

  • MPLS vs ROUTING

Guys first of all i am vvv new to this (MPLS) now guys i have read some few articles......plus some few chapters of few books on MPLS......the main theme of MPLS i sthat it is a lable technology send...froward packets on labels rather then plooking the ip address (tradional)........now guys what is th eplus point then.........i mean the only thing which i can see is that routers would not hold routing tables......so whats th emain theme of MPLS.......i mean i didnt get any main different....please help me clearing my concept....thanks alot for looking

The routers would still hold the IGP routing table. MPLS isn't a routing protocol. There used to be some performance gains because the router did a lookup on the label (32 bits). However that really isn't the case anymore with lookups being done in hardware. If you're running BGP across your network, with MPLS implemented you can remove BGP from you core devices and just have it on the edge devices. The biggest thing with MPLS though is the other services you can offer on the network once MPLS is deployed. You can offer Layer 3 VPNs, Layer 2 VPNs (EoMPLS, VPLS..) and MPLS Traffic Engineering.

Don't shutdown but use Sleep instead. Also, check in the Control Panel under Power Management, Advanced Settings and look for Wake Timers to be Enabled.   If your bios doesn't support WOL then you might not get it. Some wake states are not supportted by mobile platforms.

  • Prioritize data on one SSID on an autonomous AP with multiple SSIDs

    Hello,
I have a standalone AP(AP1261N) which is configured with 3 SSIDs.I would like to prioritize any data flow on SSID 1 for example so that users on SSID 1 are always functional independent on what is happening on the other SSIDS.
Then have the SSID 2 with a lower priority and SSID 3 lowest priority.
Each SSID is associated with a vlan.
I have seen some posts describing that this can be done using QOS associated with the different vlans.
Could someone please explain how I could configure the AP to do so?
    I am using Command line.
    Thank you

    Hi Kavi,
Here are the few important points you need to understand when it comes to Autonomous AP QoS (this is extract from the link provided by Scot in above).
The QoS implementation for wireless LANs differs from QoS  implementations on other Cisco devices. With QoS enabled, access points  perform the following:
•They  do not classify packets; they prioritize packets based on DSCP value,  client type (such as a wireless phone), or the priority value in the  802.1q or 802.1p tag.
•They  do not construct internal DSCP values; they only support mapping by  assigning IP DSCP, Precedence, or Protocol values to Layer 2 COS values.
•They carry out EDCF like queuing on the radio egress port only.
•They do only FIFO queueing on the Ethernet egress port.
•They support only 802.1Q/P tagged packets. Access points do not support ISL.
•They support only MQC policy-map set cos action.
•They  prioritize the traffic from voice clients (such as Symbol phones) over  traffic from other clients when the QoS Element for Wireless Phones  feature is enabled.
•They support Spectralink phones using the class-map IP protocol clause with the protocol value set to 119.
Also it is important to understand what type of traffic get impacted by AAP QoS. When you configure AAP for QoS it will primarily affect downstream traffic from AP to Client (No control over traffic coming from wireless client to AP - where priority will determine by WMM UP of clients traffic)
As you can see in the above, only FIFO available on ethernet egress (from AP to rest of your network) & then depend on how do you configure network switch ports connected to these AP (either trust DSCP or COS) it will determine how QoS maintain within your wired network.
In unified wireless enviroment you can classify each SSID with different QoS profile (Platinum, Gold, Silver & Bronze) & control what is the max level of QoS priority packets will get in each SSID. But in autonomous world it is not straightforward like that.

  • WLC to use Management Interface & Few more getting started Questions

    Hello,
I'm yet to implement the Wireless LAN in one of our client's corporate office. There 40 x 1130AG LWAPP AP's and 4404 WLC with ACS 4.x for the Authentication of the Wireless Clients who is trying to access the LAN.
For the WLC to connect to the Dual Core Switch, i need to use only one Management Interface with Distribution System port 1 being the Primary and mapping the DS Port 2 as the Backup port for the Management Interface. Is this Right? or do i have configure Dynamic Interfaces as well. Is management interface for accessing / management and configuration only? Management Interface will communicate with ACS for AAA and AP's who would like to associate with the WLC, is this Right?
Note: WLC, AP's, Wireless Clients & AP's are in the same IP Subnet.
Few other question of WLAN's so it helps me during implementation -
    • Can I use the 802.1x Authentication application found in the Windows XP for the Wireless Interface; instead of Cisco Client Application. For this; I have to configure the WLC / Wireless Client to use EAP algorithm; is this Right?
    • With the help of RRM, the channel interference between multiple AP's (3 - 4 AP's) in the same area is controlled by the WLC by changing the Channels used by the AP which is not same on all the AP's. Is this right?
    • How many Client Users will connect per Channels. 802.11 a / g will provide 11 Channels, is this Right?.
    • I'm trying to set in the WLC to limit the Client connections per AP to 25, can this be achieved?
Please, can anyone help me in calrifying the above points.
    Regards,
    Keshava Raju

Many Thanks Mr. Dennis for your help & Clarification.
With ref to your reply point no# 1. I have actually planned to connect one Gig port of the controller to each of the Dual Cisco Core Switch setup. Can i use all 4 Controller Interfaces configured as LAG and Port 1 & 2 connecting to Core Switch 01 and Port 3 & 4 connecting to Core Switch 02?
I have Final two more questions, Request you to help me calrifying this?
    • I'm willing to configure Multicast communication between the WLC & AP's. For this configuration is it necessary to Connect the WLC in a different VLAN than the VLAN of the AP's. Is it necessary that I have to set the controller to LWAPP Layer 3 mode to support the Multicast communication?
    • Though I do not have implementation experience of the WLAN. My understanding of the Interface settings on the WLC - is I will have to configure one Management Interface for in-band management. Do I have to configure AP-Manager Interface (to support Multicast communication) and to make the WLC to communicate with ACS for Client Authentication. All of the Wireless Devices including the ACS are in one VLAN / IP Subnet, is only one Management Interface is enough for communicating with AP's (with Multicast) and communicating with ACS for forwarding the Authentication messages between the ACS & Wireless Clients?

  • WoL over 802.1X with Vlan Assignement

    Hello
    I have a switch 3560, and an ACS v4
In phase of test i have an infrastructure with 802.1X PEAP with automatic VLAN assignation by the ACS according to the Machine.
    My question is:
it possible to implement Wake One Lan on 802.1x with a assigantion of vlan not statics (i.e. without use of command Switchport access vlan XXX)
PS: if I do in statics the VLAN on a port Wake one Lan work without Pb with 802.1X

    Ok, on interface 0/19 :
    Switchport mode access
    speed 100
    duplex Full
    dot1x pae authenticator
    dot1x port-control auto
    dot1x control-direction in
    spanning-tree portfast
The software use is like "wolcmd" with configuration of
    MAC address of the PC
IP of the PC (give by DHCP reservation)
    Subnet mask
    Remote port Number : 7
The authentication on ACS work fine and on ACS whe have this field
    [064] Tunnel-Type
    value : VLAN
    [065] Tunnel-Medium-Type
    Value : 802.
    [Tunnel-Private-Group-ID]
    Value : 69
In fact, the only difference between config is assignation static or dynamic of VLAN
I don't know if this what you wan't

  • MTU related issues with FRoMPLS

    Hi Folks,
While using FRoMPLS I am experiencing limitations in the Edge MTU. The
edge MTU is limited to 1492 bytes above which the packets are droped. The MPLS MTU between PE routers has been changed to 1526 bytes. I understand AToM does not do fragmentation. I did see a workaround in he Web saying increasing the Core MTU to carry the Edge MTU of 1500. This does not seem to work. Any change in the core MTU does not reflect in the edge MTU. Can anyone help me isolae the issue.
    thanks in advance
    ashraf

the way i usually solves these kind of issues of mtu is:
if you suspect the problem is somwhere in your core between both pe routers
change the atom mpls implementation just for the diagnostic to be a layer3 vpn then from the ce do an extended ping where you set the df bit to 1 and the size to 1500 so routers in the core will not fragment the packet then do "debug ip icmp" on the ce and then ping the other ce
the result of this action is you will see with the debug the hop that cannot do fragmentation .(icmp cannot fragment)
and on these routers in your core you should concentrate and change the mtu with the t"ag-switching mtu 1526" command.
from my experience sometimes usually on ethernet interfaces (not giga)and regular serial if you enlarge the mtu it is not inuff you should also shut and unshut the interface and sometimes even reload the router.so i hope large part of your core is pos and giga.
also because atom does not support fragnentation make sure each link connecting the ce to pe on both sides have the same mtu
after you see that with a layer 3 vpn there is no fragmentation then switch back to atom.
    good luck

  • Can I put two ATI Radeon X1900 XT's into a MacPro?

    Hi
We've just bought a MacPro, with 3 NVIDEA 7300 cards. Sadly it seems the 7300 does not support the apple DVI-Video adapter. Our system requires three dual link DVI ports supporting the adapter, so on face value we should be able achieve this by removing the 7300's and installing two ATI Radeon X1900 XT's instead.
The question is is it possible to put two ATI Radeon X1900 XT's into a MacPro? Has any one done this? or indeed does anyone know how to get the 7300's to recognize a DVPAL device such as video projector or analogue video monitor?
    Cheers

    MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

PCI-E (Peripheral Component Interconnect-Express) is a newer implementation of PCI which uses a much faster physical-layer communications protocol than older PCI bus architectures.
Rather than using a bus as PCI did, PCI-E uses dedicated, unidirectional, point-to-point connections known as "lanes" to communicate with PCI-E devices.
The Mac Pro features four PCI-E 16-"lane" connectors on the main logic board. In PCI-E, these are known as "x16" slots. These can be used for PCI-E-compatible cards, like the ATI Radeon card that is available as a configure-to-order option in the Mac Pro.
PCI-E cards will work in slots that are at least as large as the card is. This means that the "x16" slots in the Mac Pro computer also supports "x1" and "x4" cards as well. However, all four slots cannot simultaneously support four cards that implement the same lane configuration. Only one slot actually has 16 lanes going to it—you can put a x16 card into a slot that is only using one lane and it will operate properly, but it will operate more slowly than the same card in a x4, x8 or x16 slot.
The Expansion Slot Utility, located in /System/Library/Core Services, allows you to configure the PCI-E expansion slots and how many lanes each slot will support, as illustrated below. This example shows a "x16" graphics card occupying the first slot, and the other slots are configured to support an "x1" card in slot two and "x4" cards in slots three and four. The example shows the other options available. When you have picked the appropriate configuration of slots to support your compliment of PCI-E cards, click the Save and Restart... button to implement the configuration.

Now i can login instantly, but S2 blocks single player and dont load anything (i think is cuz wine is trying to use some kind of LAN network wich SC2 may block to avoid private servers).
I cant really solve this myself, i would love any help. Also please notice that Starcraft II have a big size and a bigger update size, so dont ask me for reinstall if its not really necessary, since it takes 6-7 hours on my 5mb internet.
Also if needed i can provide ssh access to my system.

Wait about 10 - 15 mins. If that does not work, than wait 30 mins. It will take a (relative) long time, until it gets unblocked (only the first time).
