MS NLB w/virtual mac question

Since Cisco uses virtual mac's for it's own load balancing, I'm having trouble believing that it does not have a way to handle MS's network load balancing, which uses a virtual MAC (placing the same MAC on two ports), other than to isolate it using a VLAN. I'm guessing I am just not finding the proper way to do it, in spite of hours of searching! Probably because I am not searching for the right terminology. Argh!
So, is there a way to configure the switch so that two ports use the same MAC, and traffic gets forwarded to both ports, without setting up a separate VLAN (requiring routing)?
Thanks!

We use MS NLB in multicast mode, it seems easier to control. We configure a static MAC address (the 0100.5exx.xxxx MAC) on each of the ports that connect to an NLB interface, typically two ports. Note that this address cannot be learned because the port uses it's NIC hardware MAC on outgoing packets. Also, you should add the multicast MAC to any upstream switches (on the trunk port going to the distribution switch).
Another issue is that IOS will not accept a multicast MAC as a reply to an ARP for a unicast IP address, so you may also have to add a static ARP entry in the router mapping the virutal IP of the NLB to the multicast MAC addess it uses. Curiously our Checkpoint FW (under Windows) does accept this ARP response.
If you are not using NLB in multicast mode then you might want to look at the 'hub solution'. Here is a pointer to a discussion on NLB devices connected to layer 2 switches :

  • Windows Network Load Balancing - Virtual MAC Address

    Hi All,
I have environment that running 2 Exchange 2010 server with CASHT and join windows network load balancing as a node.
    My question is,
If NLB service is restart, is it virtual MAC Address for NLB will change to new virtual MAC Address?
    Thanks for response,
    Best Regards,
    Henry Stefanus

    Hi Henry Stefanus,
The NLB work mechanism will not change whether what higher application we used and I am not very familiar with Exchange NLB architecture, may the following KB and article
    may help you.
When you use the unicast method, all cluster hosts share an identical unicast MAC address. Network Load Balancing overwrites the original MAC address of the cluster adapter
with the unicast MAC address that is assigned to all the cluster hosts.
When you use the multicast method, each cluster host retains the original MAC address of the adapter. In addition to the original MAC address of the adapter, the adapter is
assigned a multicast MAC address, which is shared by all cluster hosts. The incoming client requests are sent to all cluster hosts by using the multicast MAC address.

  • Virtual MAC-Address on Solaris 10 update 9

    Hi,
i'm installing Solaris 10 update 9 on UCS B-Series (B230 M2 or B440 M2) with M72KR-Q Adapter. We create the Service Profile with vNIC associated to vNIC Template. The vNIC Template use the MAC Pool Address configurated.
When we run ifconfig -a on Solaris we can view only the original MAC-Address instead of Virtual MAC-Addres. Is this correct?
    Thanks in advance

When you say the "original" MAC are you referring to the Hardware Default?
Ensure your MAC pool has available addresses also.  You can also test unbinding the vNIC template from the Solaris service profile, and manually assigning a MAC address (watch for overlap) to the vNIC and see if that pushes to the solaris host.
If that works, then you have a pool/template issue.  If not, we'll need to investigate further.

MAC QUESTION--I'm looking for the toggle button that use to be on the bottom right of desktop folders to increase and decrease the size of the thumbnails.  Does this still exist?

Glad you got it going. I'm in Thumbnail mode most of the time in my Finder, so I didn't notice that the slider isn't there in others. I'm running Yosemite as well and I'm happy this feature has been kept.
    Thanks for letting me know

  • Flashing world icon, sad mac & question mark folder

Hi. Since installing 10.4.3 my system won't boot. I downloaded and installed the update then restarted the machine, the screen go's dull grey and then a square icon with the world inside it start to flash, a few seconds after that a sad mac/question mark folder flashes then the system appears to start. The disk spins up, the Apple logo appears then after a few more seconds the disk graudually grinds to a halt and the system shuts itself down. Why would this be happening, someone told me that it sounds like it's trying to netboot (whatever that may be) How can I resolve this issue and get my system back? Thanks.

Try holding down option (alt) at boot to get the open firmware boot selection screen then select your internal drive as the book disk. After start up completes (if it does) go to System Prefs/Startup Disk and reselect the internal disk, restart and it should be fine.

ACE uses the concept of Virtual Mac Addresses , which are the addresses used for VIP addresses, NAT addresses (dynamic and static), and alias addresses These will all always use a MAC address in the following form 00.0b.fc.fe.1b.
If you are using single ACE SM in a cat6k box, and you are seeing duplicate MAC, its normal. Cat6k Supervisor is L2 Adjacent with ACE, Any traffic received by Supervisor in VLAN 810 will be sent to ACE and then ACE will determine which VIP that packet is going to.
Real Problem will come when you are using multiple ACE modules in Same Chassis or you are doing Chassis to Chassis ACE Redundancy. In such situation your Cat6k Switch will have duplicate MAC entries.
To avoid this, you need to keep your Contexts in diffrent context groups in each Module i.e something like this
    ft group 5
      peer 1
      priority X
      associate-context default3
      inservice

  • Configuring Virtual MAC Addresses on ASA

    Hello,
I configure the virtual MAC address for a interface on ASA 5520, will enter the following command on the active unit:
failover mac address Inside 0012.3456.789a 0023.4567.89ab
The active MAC address is of the same as the Inside's burned-in MAC address of the active unit.
Similarly, the standby MAC address is of the same as the Inside's burned-in MAC address of the standby unit.
Do I get the effect of failover mac address command?
Thank you for your cooperation in advance.

    Hi Bro
That’s fine really. There’s nothing wrong if you’ve configured the active MAC address the same as the Inside's burned-in MAC address of the active unit.
In an Active/Standby failover, the MAC addresses for the primary unit are always associated with the active IP addresses. If the secondary unit boots first and becomes active, it uses the burned-in MAC address for its interfaces. When the primary unit comes online, the secondary unit obtains the MAC addresses from the primary unit. The change can disrupt network traffic.
You can configure virtual MAC addresses for each interface to ensure that the secondary unit uses the correct MAC addresses when it is the active unit, even if it comes online before the primary unit. If you do not specify virtual MAC addresses the failover pair uses the burned-in NIC addresses as the MAC addresses.
P/S: If you think this comment is useful, please do rate them nicely :-)

  • Run more than 2 virtual mac servers on mac mini.

I want run  virtual mac server on mac mini e.g. 4-6 vm, what is the additional licenses I have to buy?

The EULA only allows a Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion to run two Virtual Machines running Lion or Mountain Lion.
    See page 2 of http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/OSX1082.pdf
Doing so would have no extra cost. It does not appear you are allowed even if you were willing to pay to run 3 or more Mac VMs on the same machine. Therefore if you are trying to have more you would either have to use multiple Macs, or use a different approach.
With Mountain Lion you can have more than two simultaneous users logged in with their own Desktop by using Screen Sharing. Of course they would have to be using a Mac client to exploit this feature although I think ReakVNC Server might allow doing this with non-Macs running the RealVNC client.
Another approach is to run a Mac Terminal server like AquaConnect or iRAPP. I have had a couple of dozen (Windows) clients logged in to a Mac Terminal server this way.

  • HSRP : routers respond with virtual mac AND physical mac to ARP requests

    - When HSRP first runs or when there is a topology change, the active router sends correct ARP gratuitous reply packets (with the virtual MAC address)
    - ARP table is filled in on the Internet router.
    - When the ARP entry in the table expires it asks for the virtual IP mac address (192.168.0.2).
    - R1 responds with the virtual MAC address ---- BUT ---- R2 also responds with its physical mac address !
    - So packets are sent to the wrong router (R2) which can't route any packets because the NAT table is not up to date. I don't even have NAT command to synhronize NAT sessions between routers. But anyway, it should not solve my issue.
It occurs only on the NAT (outside) interface. On the other virtual interfaces it behaves as expected.
I don't have any explanations to this behaviour.
For the moment, I have to keep R2 offline and bring it back online in case of failure.
I tried several workarounds but I can neither filter ARP packets (no such function) on my router nor on my switch (too restrictive).

  • NATing to the virtual MAC address of an HSRP group problems...

    Hello
I have a problem where I need to NAT various IP addresses, and need the NATd addresses to carry the virtual MAC address of the HSRP group on the onward travels..
By default, with the Cisco 871's I'm using, the packets are NATd, but carry the MAC address of the external interface.. not the virtual MAC address.
The problem is that when I failover to the standby 871, the packets will then have the MAC address of the standby (new active) 871. This causes problems because my next hop doesn't update its ARP tables (very infrequent updates).
The next hop will accept packets NATd by the standby (now live), but will continue to send reply (eg ICMP) to the live (now standby) because it hasn't updated its ARP table.
I know that I can create a NAT pool with the virtual IP address as the only member of the pool. Packets will then have the virtual MAC address, and the problem will be fixed, but if I need to NAT IP addresses to *different* NATd addresses, then I would have to create multiple HSRP groups, with different virtual IP's and MAC's, and then create multiple NAT pools...
If I can't get my next hop (which I have minimal control over) to refresh/update it's ARP table, then I will consider the multiple HSRP group config, but before I try that I would like to know whether I would be able to have multiple virtual IP's and MAC's on a single interface. Apparently there was a problem with the Catalyst 2500/4500 series where the same MAC address would be used for all HSRP groups, and you had to use burned-in MAC addresses for HSRP groups.. which wouldn't provide a solution in this case..
Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. BTW I have proxy-arp on external interface, and gratuitous arp.
    My software version is:
Cisco IOS Software, C870 Software (C870-ADVSECURITYK9-M), Version 12.3(8)YI1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
    Synched to technology version 12.3(10.3)T2

  • Virtual PC question?

I am currently redeveloping my website to bring it to today standard with a bit of php & css.
(I am not a web designer! but like coding sometimes) and all was going well with Safari, Firefox and IE 5 for Mac. That was until I ask a friend to check my progress on his XP machine and IE7.
So I decided to revive an old PC and installed XP pro on it.
With the IE6 from the box, all was worst than on IE7 screen shot provided by my friend. Dam
I discovered the MS was doing Vitual PC 2004/2007 and that looks like a great option to load multiple OS and browser versions on a single machine.
Although this PC is a bit prehistoric, it might just work but it makes such a racket that I looked into the Mac version to carry on working on my PB which has been the only machine in the home for few years now.
MS was doing a Virtual PC v7 for mac PPC that comes with XP Home.
I was wondering if like the Windows version, VPCv7 allows to run more than one MS.OS as I have few old MS.OS discs lying around.
I will be happy to go hunting for a Mac version, just to be able to work in silence.
I will be please to hear from developers and their experiences, and what are the pro and con of the these two solutions.
    Many thanks
    Laurent
PS: I know I am a few years late on the topic, sorry

My question has been posted a while ago, and got little answers regarding this issue.
I read the few thread on VPC and MAMP but with little answers. The probably censured MAMP forum, is particularly bad, i.e if you can't work it out, buy MAMP pro, or some VPC forum comment, I tried and gave up.
Well I have found almost the full answer by myself after lots of try and errors.
I decided to share it with you as almost nothing is available apart some vague hints in a couple of thread that seems to be addressed to some expert techs with editing .conf files etc,....
I am not very familiar with all the settings in Leopard and Windows.
I also tried to use the PHP install from Leopard, but crashed my system as I am ignorant with Terminal.
It took me quite a while to get my system working again. In fact 4 installs from the Retail disk (10.5.0), as the erase install doesn't erase at all, and it all went very buggy. (I wonder how can an OS end up in shops with a system that wasn't working at all). I now have made a back-up of what seems to be an almost stable but fragile install of Leopard.
    Anyway lets move on.
So I tried for once to be a bit more methodical.
1/ Trying to connect from another computer to MAMP installed the PB.
This is how I managed to do it.
My powerbook is connected to the internet through a wireless router using the Airport.
I was at my girl friend house, so I also used her emac also connected to the same router.
A friend came by with a PC, and double checked with it too.
I initially tried to access the MAMP installed on the PowerBook from the eMac.
An old eMac 700mhz with Tiger installed.
First I needed to allow Web Sharing.
    In System Preferences (mac) choose,
    Sharing>Web Sharing "On"
(The address given to access the Powerbook, can change in function of how many devices are connected to the router, so you must check this before connecting. Let say 192.168.1.7)
To be able to access MAMP folders I needed to add
MAMP to the firewall as +Allow incoming connection+ in Leopard.
Once I was satisfied that it was possible, I tried the opposite connection, and installed MAMP on her computer.
_In Tiger I opened some ports too_
    In Sharing, firewall, I clicked
    New>>> for Port Names> Other
    TCP port Numbers:8888
    UDP port Numbers:8888
    Description: mamp
I haven't tried MySQL but I believe that one might need to open the corresponding ports in the firewall.
Now I knew the right address to access MAMP from another computer.
    http://192.168.1.7:8888/MAMP/
2/ I focused of the VPC connection which was still not working, while I was able to have access to the internet from fresh install.
I first added VPC to the firewall as +Allow incoming connection+ in Leopard.
I am not sure this was necessary but I did it.
I was able to connect to the emac's MAMP from VPC but not to my own PB MAMP where VPC is installed. So I knew it was a problem about connecting to self. I believe it was an issue about the IP. So I decided to try to connect to the net from VPC differently.
    In System Preferences allow:
    Sharing>Internet Sharing "On"
    in my case I choose
    "Share your connection from" >Airport,
    "To Computer using" > Ethernet.
    Then in Virtual PC:
I select the system I want to use (let's say Windows XP professional) which is the default name from fresh install.
    I click "Settings"
A window open called +Setting for Windows XP professional+.
    Select
    Networking>Enable networking>Virtual Switch
You will be probably asked to restart Windows. Do it.
At the bottom of the window called Setting there is a button called
    +Open Application Preferences+ open it
    Select
    Networking>Virtual Switch Preferences> Build-In-Ethernet
    and click Done.
You can now start Windows and connect to http://192.168.1.7:8888/MAMP or any other folder in htdocs installed on the PB, and still have access to the internet.
I believe this is only possible with an internet connection so that an IP is provided for Web Sharing.
I haven't tried with sharing internet connection from ethernet to ethernet.
This will do for me for now, and will be able to avoid all the FTP with an online server every time one edits a file. I was amazed at the near silence to my question about VPC and MAMP in this forum and elsewhere.
    Almost like a dirty secret.....
I hope this will help others an save them precious time playing around
    Cheers

I have found some that say they are Mac compatible but you need to install Windows or another type of software. I have had several people tell me not to install Windows on my Mac. Anyone have any suggestions. Help

  • New WD My Passport for Mac - questions!

    Hi, everyone,
I just bought a new WD My Passport for Mac 1 TB. I am going to use it to run Time Machine and then drag and drop pertinent files that I need. From there, I am doing a clean install of Mountain Lion. I have a 2012 MacBook Pro.
I just have a few questions.
    1. I read that there are big issues with this and Mavericks/Yosemite. If I ever upgrade, am I am going to lose everything or has that since been resolved?
    2. How do I install it? When I read the manual, I am not sure if I am supposed to install the software (because of issues with point 1), just plug & play, how to do Time Machine, and so on.
I have another My Passport from a few years back, but don't remember how to set it up.
If someone can dumb it down for me, I'd really appreciate it. I am looking to do a Time Machine, then drag over various documents, my Music folder, iPhoto Library, Mail exports, and a few other things.

Thank you again. It's really nice there are people like you willing to give their time to help others.
An update: My Passport (not named that!) is backing up via Time Machine as we speak. Next step is to copy the files that I need over to the hard drive. I already have on another hard drive, but I figure it is better to be safe than sorry.
My question for you is basically if there is anything I should try to think about or remember to bring over. These are the things that I use regularly and what I have done on the other drive and will do here:
    - Microsoft Office (mostly just Word): I will reinstall the disk, I have the activation code, and I will drag over all of my files
    - iMovie: I've made one movie, and I like it, and I dragged it over and tested it on another MacBook and know it works
    - iPhoto: I will drag over iPhoto Library
    - Mail: I have exported all of my Mailboxes, will re-import them, and then re-set up my accounts
    - iTunes: I dragged over iTunes Music from the Music > iTunes > iTunes Music folder (?)
    - iCal/Notes: logging back into iCloud should do it
    - Stickies: I know there is a database in the ~library ... do I just drag that over?
    - Chrome: I will download it again
    - my printer: I think I just go to the site to download the driver
    - Airport Express: does that just work on its own?
    - Dropbox: I will redownload it but, heck, I might just drop my account
    - Bookmarks are exported from Chrome
    - iCal is exported, just in case.
    - Contacts are exported, just in case
I don't THINK there is anything else I am forgetting that I might use regularly and not realize it. Do you have any suggestions of something I might be missing? I do have an iPhone backup I might want to snag (I know it is stored elsewhere...) but I am thinking of wiping that clean, too.
Should I take note of any specific security or user settings I have (other than basics, like colors and that sort of stuff)
I am nervous that I will forget something but excited to have a nice, fresh new MacBook and fool myself into thinking I got to treat myself to something new!

The answer to (1) is yes. for OSX, there hasn't yet been a full-number release (they're all v10). Point releases come out every couple years or so, and usually cost about $130. So if you had 10.4 and wanted to upgrade to 10.5, you'd have to buy it. But updated numbers after the second point are free. So if you have 10.5, then 10.5.5 is a free download.
Question (2) I'm less sure about, but I would guess that all of those games would probably work. They don't list the particular video card in the Macbook as "Supported", but it's newer than the cards listed. All the other requirements are met.
From the requirements listed, I would guess that "medal of honor war chest" is a PPC game, which means it will probably run on the Intel Macbook, but under emulation. I think usually the newer Intels are fast enough that running PPC stuff under emulation should be fine, but I don't do much of that so I can't speak from experience.
I sometimes install Windows on a second partition on my Macs so I can dual boot, just for games. So there's that option too.
