MS Office  Assistant question

I'm new to Macs and have just bought a new 20"IMac with MS Office on it. As a long time Windows user, I am used to being able to change the "Office Assistant" as with the Windows ersion of Office you have several "assistants "to choose from. On the Mac, you can bring up the Office Assistant and click on "options" then on "Gallery" and it says you can click "next" or "back" to select a different Assistant, but the buttons are ghosted and you can not select anything. I talked to the Apple tech suport and they said this is something for Microsoft to answer.......... I don't want to go there. Anyone have any ideas how to get this option to work???? Thanks.

Hi RickPat & Welcome.
If your just using the MS Office Test Drive it may not have any additional Assistants. Sorry.
If you installed Office from a CD insert the CD into your drive. Double click the Value Pack folder. Double click the Value Pack installer icon and select the Assistants check box to install all the assistants. To select individual Assistants click the triangle next to the Assistants option then select the Assistants you want.
I like Scribbles myself. My cats get a little jealous though, consider yourself warned;).
BTW if your currently running MS Office trial version and decide to buy the full version make sure that you run the Remove Office BEFORE you install the full version. You can do this by: Macintosh HD/ Applications/ MS Office Trial/ Additional Items/ Remove Office. Then restart your Mac. Some versions it may be: Macintosh HD/ Applications/ MS Office Trial/ Remove Office. This will save on conflicts between the two versions. Microsoft.
Be sure to run Permissions repair before and after any software update, upgrade, and/ or install. Macintosh HD/ Utilities/ Disk Utility / Select HD and click repair permissions.

  • Exchange 2010 Out of Office Assistant not working?

New server with a new Exchange 2010 install into an existing domain...
When users on both the internal network and external network try to access the Out of Office Assistant they get an error message of: " Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable".
I have done tons of research on WebServicesVirtualDirectory and AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory and set both internal and external URL's that work if you go to them in IE )internally and externally offsite).
Here are the settings of Autodiscover and Webservices:

Test-OutlookWebServices comes up with errors. The Test E-mail AutoConfiguration within Outlook still appears to be looking for Autodiscover at different URLs...
OOF within Outlook Web App functions.
    Any suggestions would be helpful!

From your previous post, I understand that OOF doesn't work for both internal and external clients. Error message "Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable" was received from Outlook client side. Please correct me if I have any misunderstanding.
Before we go any further, I would appreciate your help in clarifying the following questions:
    1. When did this issue begin to occur, since the installation of Exchange 2010?
    2. Can we access and configure OOF from OWA?
As internal & external clients are using different methods/URL to access Autodiscover and EWS, which provided OOF service, I recommend we focus on the internal users first.
To troubleshoot this issue, please install the hotfix mentioned in the following KB on the Exchange Client Access Server first:
Outlook 2007 crashes or you cannot access OOF settings after you install a package that contains the .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 and the .NET Framework 2.0 with SP2 on an Exchange 2007 Client Access server or on an Exchange 2010 Client Access server
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958934
After that, check if the issue remains. If there is still problem, please help me collect:
    1. Test E-mail AutoConfiguration from Outlook client
    1. Launch Outlook 2007 using a correct configured profile.
    2. Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard and click the Outlook icon in the notification area of the Windows taskbar, also known as the notification area.
    3. In the menu that appears, click Test E-mail AutoConfiguration.
    4. Enter your E-mail Address and Password (if not logged into the domain) in the respective edit boxes.
    5. Choose the desired auto configuration methods with Use Autodiscover, clear other selection.
    6. Click Test.
    7. Please send me the screenshot of the result tab and log tab.
    2. Result files after running the following command on the Exchange 2007 server
    Get-ExchangeCertificate | FL >C:\cert.txt
    Get-WebServicesVirtualDirectory –Server ServerName | FL >C:\EWS.txt
    Get-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory –Server ServerName | FL >C:\Audis.txt

  • Outlook 2007 & Exchange 2007 - Out of office assistant not working

    Hi,
when using outlook 2007 and the users mailbox is on an Exchange 2007 server the out of office assistant doesn't work. When you start the out of office assistant the following message is displayed:
'Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable. Try again later.'
Using Outlook 2003 and connect to the same mailbox, the assistant works fine, however you don't have the additional features new to the Assistant.
Also, when using outlook 2007 and connect to an Exchange 2003 mailbox the out of office assistant is also functioning fine.
Using Outlook Web Access on Exchange 2007 to set the out of office assistant works also fine, so the error message is not correct.
Any idea how to fix this ?
    Franc.

Whilst I agree that auto-discover and other comment's could be upheld, I know that even when EWS and auto-discover are setup correctly that this problem will still occur.
I manage an Exchange 2007 environment with 300 users and and Exchange 2010 environment with 700 user's all using Outlook 2007.  We are in the progress of deploying Outlook 2010 but I know with the new authentication process of the Outlook
client with Exchange 2007 or older and Outlook 2007 or older, this problem will still occur.
I know that their are just a few out of a 1,000 user base that experience this problem, so I don't see how global settings and configurations and settings are the culprit.
Just like the problem caused by a badly designed update in November or December of last year that meant auto-discover does not auto-configure a new Outlook profile because it would not detect the user's e-mail address but somehow create some random e-mail
address with the AD account name before the @ and the FQDN for the domain name, which involved a further release of another update several month's later to fix that.
Plus the other problem with the daily and frequent prompt's throughout the day for OWA domain login credential's despite being authenticated and Outlook contacting Exchange fine signified by the bottom-right hand corner status stating so.  I press escape
and Outlook carries performing as normal for it do the same a few hours later, however I find that after about half a dozen prompt's over several days, it will disconnect the Outlook client saying 'Need Password' in the bottom-right, which despite left and
right-mouse clicking does not load a login prompt to re-enter credentials that I should not need to be doing in the first place considering that I am logged in with the correct domain account on my computer and using the destined mailbox for that AD account.
Exiting Outlook gracefully and re-launching Outlook a few seconds later allowing time for the background application handles and sub-handles amongst probably other things from the previous Outlook session to close (although, I do find every so often this
process is hampered every so often by having to end the Outlook.exe process directly through Task Manager before being able to re-attempt launching the Outlook client) and Outlook will just reconnect without the need or receiving a prompt to enter the login
details but I will no doubt receive another login prompt that I can likely just press cancel to or the escape button or perhaps, have to follow the above process again.
Just like releasing SP1 for Exchange 2010 to add more problems that worked without it but fixing those problems that existing in 2010.
I find that deleting a database result's in a failure error that in fact does successfully remove the database but since SP1, I know have to run a shell command to remove the database in the registry to delete an entry from a 'state' and 'lockstate' folder
before I am rid of the Exchange configuration, to then have to suspend all database copies on that server and re-start all of the Exchange services before I can actually delete the edb file.  Just absurd.
It's all just a backwards and forwards exercise with Microsoft but would love permanent solutions to all of the above.  Please advise on the above because it is a major irritation.

  • Unable to turn on Out Of Office Assistance in Microsoft Office 2013

    Hi All,
I have a client with multiple PC's onsite, which consist of both Office 2010 and Office 2013 installed. I am experiencing issues with the 2 PC's that have Outlook 2013 installed as they are unable to turn on their Out Of Office Assistant due to an error
that states "Your automatic reply settings cannot be displayed because the server is currently unavailable"
There are no connectivity issues between the server (Exchange 2007) and these Outlook 2013 PC's as all other features of Outlook work without any issues
We have tried re-creating their Outlook profiles
Logged on as another user and created their Outlook profiles
As a workaround they have been turning on their Out Of Office Assistant via OWA
    Any suggestions guys?

  • How to make an application like MS office assistant

Hi! I am attempting to create a program that runs in a window with an irregular shape(not rectangular).I am considering doing this in java using shots of the Desktop in order to simulate transparency. Can anyone suggest another tool, language that would allow me to do this in a more elegant way?!
    Thank you

    A word of warning:
the MS Office Assistant is undoubtedly the most-hated character in the entire computing world. You may become very unpopular if you create a similar monster... ;-)

  • Open Office Startup Question

    Hi All -
I recently bought a new MacBook. My first Mac, so I am on these forums a lot asking questions that to long-time users likely seem silly. Thanks in advance for your assistance and patience.
When I start Open Office I see in my Doc an application called X11 start. I understand this is some sort of Windows Translator (?) or something. It opens up a small text window with "bash-3.2$" in it.
That box will 'hang' for a while. Then I get a small box saying "Command Timed Out."
I click OK, then I can see the Java start (again in the dock) and Open Office will start.
What is happening here? Can I get around this, or is this the (small) price I will have to pay to use Open Office on the Mac?
    Insight / Suggestions appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
Open Office for Mac uses X11.
X11 is a framework for building Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) and has its origin in the Unix world.
Right now it is indeed the price to paid when using Open Office.
As an alternative you can use NeoOffice http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php which is based on the Open Office sources, but doesn't need X11.

    Stefan

  • Small office network questions

I have a small office with 4-5 mac computers. I have a Mac mini set up as a file server and I use a standard cable connection for my internet service. I use a wired router (ethernet cables) all going to a netgear switch.
Just bought a mac mini and a drobo storage device. I have successfully set up the drobo on the mac mini and I can "see" the files and read & write to the external drive. I also have a few other people in the office -- which will need access to the drobo via the network, but have a few questions there:
    1. I don't see the name of the other computers that can connect to the unit. When I get on one of the other machines and look for the drobo I can find it & edit files but from the mac-mini side, I can't see the proper name of the other computer. How do I do this?
    2. Can I limit which folders are accessible within the drobo that attached to the mac mini
    3. Am I missing anything from a safety standpoint? Can Anyone come into my office and access the files that are on the mac/mini drobo? Worse off, is the mac mini vulnerable to the outside world with this setup?
Thanks for the help, new to all this networking stuff.

It's been a week, so i don't know if you have already worked this out, but...
while I am not familiar with your router, when I have used linksys before, i find it better to use static IP addresses for everything.  Try setting static IP addresses and make sure everyone's mask is 255.255.255.0.  Some routers also have a flag to allow computers to see each other.
    Best of luck.

  • UPGRADE ASSISTANT QUESTIONS for ECC6.0???????911

I have used upgrade assistant in the past for 4.6C and 4.7 upgrades and had no problems.  I am having trouble getting the assistant to work through the internet browers.  I need help with a couple of questions:
First:  Do I need do a prepare and SERVER option like I had in the past with R3UP?
Second:  Is there anything special that needs to be done for ports 4239,4240,4241. I can reach my server through the internet of some of the ports that R3 uses.
It seems the java is not recognizing my i5 server and I am not sure where the disconnect is.
This is the error I am receiving when I try to start the upgrade assistant:

    - $JAVA_HOME/bin/java -cp /usr/sap/put/ua/ua.jar UaServer
    - give an administrator password
After that the UA should listen on port 4239
You can verify that on the machine via
    netstat -tn | grep -i LISTEN | grep 4239
Also check that you have either no proxy or add the box' name to the exception list of the browser (because Java uses that exception list too).

  • Migration Assistant Question (From 10.4.11 to 10.5.5)

I have a question regarding Migration Assistant in regards to upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. I do backups of my entire internal HDD onto an external firewire drive using SuperDuper. I do not make a bootable drive, I backup to a disk image that can be mounted. My question is thus: when I upgrade and choose Erase and Install (if I want to), would I be able to use migration assistant on the disk image (once it is mounted) to move all my files over? Or would I have to make the external drive bootable in order to do this?
Any help you could give me would be great!
    Message was edited by: pr0digal

Migration Assistant only works with Firewire drives, not disc images stored on Firewire drives. You would be better off re-cloning your drive directly to the Firewire drive to make a bootable image.
However, you need not do that to upgrade on the same computer. You have two upgrade options: Upgrade Install or Archive and Install. The latter puts a fresh install of Leopard on the hard drive without erasing the drive, and it saves your old system in a Previous System Folder. There is an option to transfer your user account(s) and network preferences. I would recommend using this option. The procedure follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Migration Assistant questions

I've been having issues with my MacBook .... intermittent it won't start up (freezes on gray screen), that I suspect indicates the hard drive is about to die. I've duly backed up everything via time machine to an external fire wire drive and ordered up a new hard drive.
I propose to do a fresh install of OSX from disc on the new drive and then migrate across my settings (don't want to restore from time machine in case it isn't the hard drive and is system software faults)... but hope someone could just clarify:
    1. Will migration assistant bring over Mail, Address Book, Safari bookmarks, iTunes library and iPhoto library?
    2. Should I de-authorize my iTunes on the old hard drive (subject to it staying alive long enough) before I remove it?
    Any other tips appreciated
    Steve

Options to further know if it's your HD.
You can perform a hardware test on the computer. check here to learn how to do this : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Try booting from an install disk. hold the option key down when you power on your computer. choose the install disc, Run disk utility to verify the disk or use other similar software like disk warrior to see if the HD is bad.
TO ANSWER YOUR DIRECT QUESTIONS: with important information about Time Machine and Migration Assistant Utility
    1. Will migration assistant bring over Mail, Address Book, Safari bookmarks, iTunes library and iPhoto library?
Yes. Migration Assistant Utility transfers documents, music, photos, applications, network settings, and preferences. It works on a user level by basically moving over your user account with everything in it. Migration Assistant DOES NOT transfer over the Operating system so you will have to install a fresh copy on the the new hard drive anyway.
    Pulled from the Apple Site.
" If you’re setting up a new Mac(or HD) with files from an old Mac, *Time Machine* can help simplify the process. Just use Migration Assistant to copy portions of any Time Machine backup to a new Mac, or select *“Restore System from Time Machine”* in the Utilities menu on your *Mac OS X install disc*. Choose any date recorded in Time Machine to set up your new Mac exactly as your previous Mac was on that date."
    2. Should I de-authorize my iTunes on the old hard drive (subject to it staying alive long enough) before I remove it?
You can leave this authorized because you are not installing in a new computer. iTunes will never know you changed hard drives
    Good Luck

  • Office '04 question

Hi, I am new to Leopard and just switched over from XP so bear with me. I downloaded Office '04 off my college website(the download for '08 is not availible) but all my professors use Office '07. My question is: is there something that can be downloaded that will allow me to open '07 files in '04(that doesn't require me getting '08). I have tried looking for it but my I fail at the internet. Thanks in advance

You can download the "Microsoft Office Open XML File Format Converter for Mac" beta from
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
This will do exactly what you want.

  • Office Extend Question(s)

I have a couple of questions surrounding the Office Extend 600 series access points.
    Currently we have 2- WLC5508s.
    1) In the Deployment guide it mentions turning off Aironet IE and Coverage Hole Detection. Is this required, or just highly recommended? What types of issues are we expected to encounter if we have Aironet IE and Coverage Hold Detection enabled with Office Extend AP's?
    2) In a Primary, Secondary configuration of WLC controllers, I would need to setup another NAT configuration for the second controller int he event of a failover correct? Any alternatives?

Ok so I understand your oe will connect to inside controllers not a DMZ controller. Thats fine .. Here is another way to skin this cat ..
You can create the same ssid as production but name it differently under the profile name. So you can have the same WLAN ssid name.
Under the new WLAN number it above 16, same 100. Configure this one as spec'd in the oe manual.
Then create an ap group for your oe aps and include WLAN 100 in the group.
This way you can have the same ssid, different configs. Since the WLAN is above 16 they don't get broadcasted out unless you put the aps in the group.

  • Exchanging MBP Laptops... Migration Assistant Question.

    Hello Everybody,
I recently purchased a new MBP 13" i5 with the stock hard drive. I tried upgrading the hard drive to a larger size but had issues with clicking sounds and excessive Load Cycle Counts. Since it is a new computer Apple recommended that I return this MBP and special order a new one with a larger hard drive (I'll use the extra drive as a backup). So that's what I did. The replacement computer will get to me this Friday and I will have a chance to migrate before returning the original MBP.
    Here is my question:
Could I clone my current drive to the new drive and just put that into the computer (since all of the hardware will be identical)?
Or could I just run the migration assistant (using a CAT6 ethernet cable) the first time I start the new MBP even though the OS version on the new computer will most likely be 10.6.6 and the original MBP OS is now 10.6.7?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer this question.

No! Use Setup Assistant rather than Migration Assistant. Assuming the old machine has a Firewire or Firewire 800 connection use that connection rather than than a ethernet connection. Firewire tends to be more reliable than ethernet. Follow the instructions found on Pondini's Setup Assistant tips your migration should be very smooth.
Before physically connecting the machine make sure you have the correct Firewire cable. Look on the old machine (or even better refer to the manual) to see if it's FW or FW 800. You will need one of the following cables:
    Firewire 400 to 800 Cable
    Firewire 800 Cable
If you don't want to order from Amazon you can probably find similar cables at Radio Shack or your local computer store.

  • Deleting an older user account and migration assistant question

    Hello,
So I'm out of the loop big time. I've had my current 17" iMac since 2006 (10.5.8) it's the white border one. Anywho I just got my new 27" i7 iMac and feel really stupid trying to migrate from the old computer to the new one. I couldn't figure it out so had to call Apple help.
First off I put the ethernet cable in the back of both machines thinking it was the Firewire and chose the Firewire option and kept wondering why it wouldn't work. Then it dawns on me I have the ethernet cable in. So I try to transfer that way and get stuck on the Install Mac OSX install disk and install the CD or DVD setup something or other. Well I stick the DVD in my old iMac and open the install disk and see nothing that says CD or DVD setup. I call the Apple line and realize that because my new iMac isn't hooked up to the internet I can't use the ethernet option (okay why I didn't realize that I don't know but it's been a long week and I haven't migrated a computer in a long time).
On top of all that the lady tells me the new iMac has a 800 Firewire and my old one only has a 400 Firewire (so that is why I couldn't get my Firewire 400 cable to work).
So she tells me it will take ages to set up wirelessly but I need to click no and not transfer data to the new iMac, then setup my internet then go back into migration assistant on both machines and click the network option. It is taking ages to do this.
I told her I was on the forums and that doing it this way would create a new user account and she said just to delete the old one once the new one is created. Is it that simple? My old user account is called Pink Tuley and new one is called Tuley. So once the migration is complete (think it's going to take hours on end, my old machine is 160GB with about 140GB of it full) do I just delete the older Pink Tuley account?
Yes, this is a long winded question I know.

    elmac,
I'm currently migrating my old iMac to my new iMac via the internet wirelessly. I did what the Apple support told me to do since I don't want to go out and buy a new Firewire cable (I have a 400 one now and would have to get one that has a 400 and 800 on each end which I could have bought at the store had I known).
Instead I chose not to migrate and set up my iMac with the internet, and now I'm migrating via migration assistant opened up on both machines using using the network option. It's okay if it takes forever to do as I've waited this long (I had to wait 5 weeks for my Macbook Pro HR-AG to arrive).
My old user account is called Pink Tuley and I thought there would be mass confusion if I named the new user account the same name so I chose Tuley for this one. Once I'm all migrated do I just go into the user accounts on my new iMac and delete Pink Tuley?
