MS Project 2010 No Longer Respecting Links (i.e. ignoring predecessors)

I'm using Project 2010 and everything was working fine until all of the sudden Project stopped respecting links between my tasks. In other words it is no longer considering predecessors when scheduling subsequent tasks. This is true across all
my projects. I even created a new project with 3 "Automatically" scheduled tasks that are linked in order and Project is completely disregarding the links. I have to select the links and manually hit the "Respect Links" button in order for the
tasks to be properly scheduled. But even after doing this, if I change the duration of the first task, Project is not updating the resulting dates of the following two tasks as it should. I've uninstalled Project and reinstalled hoping to fix this
but no luck. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help me fix this.

From your description, it sounds like you have somehow disabled automatic recalculation of your project. To determine if this is true, click File > Options > Schedule. Check the option selected in Calculation section near the bottom of
the page. If the Off option is selected, this means you have disabled automatic recalculation, which would cause the exact behavior you describe. Select the On option and then click the OK button. This should cause your project to recalculate
automatically from this point forward. Hope this helps.

Project server 2010 don't respect the 'Choose an account' option

We have in our company Project Server 2010.
We use to create the 2 URLs accounts for all users through the Create Accounts and choose the 'Choose an account' option so the users can select weather to work offline ("Computer") or from one of the URLs.
We encountered two cases already, that the Project Pro don't respect the
'Choose an account' option -
Every time we select the 'Choose an account' radio botton and close the Project Pro it automatically open the default account without showing the accounts window and switches back to 'Use my default account'.
If these 2 users interested in working offline they have to swich it manually only after the default account opens but they cannot open the second URL.
Does anyone know of such a case and is there a workaround to solve it?

Project 2013- Trying a to move a task within the project and have it respect new predecessor rather than old one

Ok, I am working on a rather large project schedule.
Before having to upgrade to Project 2013, the file was used in Project 2007.
Basically I am having a problem with moving tasks only to have them still respect their old predecessor instead of just the new one.
Basically I have 4 tasks ( with start dates): Task A: 1st of month, Task B: 5th of month, Task C: 9th of month, Task D: 13th of month.
I would want to move say Task D infront of Task B and have it go A/1st, D/5th, B/9th, C/13th. But all that happens is that the tasks change order but all the dates remain with their original tasks. This wasn't a problem before Project 2013.
Is there any fix for this outside of having to unlink and relink every time I make change?

You're right, it doesn't work the same in Project 2010 & later as it did in Project 2007 and earlier. The feature you desire is controlled by the option setting to autolink inserted or moved tasks. As far as I can tell there is a bug that was likely
introduced when manual scheduling was added to Project 2010. Now, if the option is set, two links will be set up, the original link to the old predecessor and a new one to the new predecessor.
I'm surprised this bug hasn't been fixed but I guess it's not something a lot of users have an issue with. Meanwhile, edit your links after drag and drop as Rod suggests.

Error saving Project 2010 files to network drive - doesn't see network drive

ANSWERED (11 April 2014):
So it seems the resolution to this is to simply create a new share with a different name. I used the existing folder (to retain NTFS permissions) and just select to Add a new Share (applying the same Share permissions as the non working Shares).
Deploying this new Share via Group Policy as a test resulted in staff being able to open files from Windows Search, save files through MS Project and the Share being accessible through browsing SMB.
All problems resolved by using a new share name for the existing folder. Seems to be a corruption in the namespace.
Note: I had previously deleted the share and recreated it. I had removed all NTFS permissions and readded (through both the GUI and icacls). This didn't make a difference.
Only changing the name of the share fixed the problem.

It seems some staff on some computers are having problems saving MS Project files to the network. This is only since an upgrade to SBS2011 (from SBS2003). The only difference now, is that network drives are mapped via group policy rather than a 'net
use' script.
This is affecting users on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, with either MS Project 2007 or 2010. The users have full change access to the folders and can create new files and modifying existing files, just not a MS Project file. Other file tyes, e.g
Word .docx, Excel .xlsx, Adobe .pdf files, all work fine. These files can be opened, edited and saved normally without problem.
To replicate this:
The user opens an existing file or creates a new file on the network folder (either through Windows Explorer or MS Project). They then click File > Save in MS Project and receive the following error (see pic below):
An interesting symptom of this is that if you select File > Save As in MS Project, the Sae As dialog box doesn't remeber the path location of the network drive. MS Project instead prompts to save the file in the local users documents folder (see pic below):
If they browse back to the original folder where the file was saved and choose to save it there, they are of course, prompted to overwrite the existing file and they can save the file. But the same thing happens every time they open the file.
It seems the problem is that Project isn't seeing the path of the file or that the network drive is attached.
If a user closes the file without saving it, they are prompted to save the file and the prompt shows the drive path:
Do you want to save changes to "N:\... Projects\Active Projects\CC...\F4 Project Plan File\004 Programme\test project file.mpp"?
But choosing to save the file gives them the same result as Save As, they are prompted for a new location as if the original file location doesn't exist.
I have disconnected the mapped drive and connected it again using net use but get the same error.
I have reinstalled MS Project 201, installed Project 2010 SP2 and installed Windows updates and it does the same thing, exactly the same symptoms.
Further, if the user opens a file from the network drive, the file shows in the Project recent files list. If they try to open the file from the recent files list in project they get the following error:
"Project cannot open the file.
-Check that the file name and path are correct.
-Check that the file format is recognized by Project.
Project files saved in a version earlier than Microsoft Project 98 can't be opened...."
This is a test file that I created on the user's computer and network drive, This is being opened with the same version it was created in. If I browse to the folder in Windows Explorer I can open the file. Of course, I then can't save the file (I still get
the original error). I'm logged on with Domain Admin privileges.

I've downloaded my TechNet version of he software and installed it with Sp2 and Windows updates and it does the same thing. This also happens on the Remote Desktop server (Server 2008 R2) using MS Project 2007.

Case 1
This error message appears when the document is open on two or more computers that are running different operating platforms. For example,
if the document is open on a Macintosh computer and you open it on a second computer running Windows or Windows NT, the error occurs when either user tries to save the document.
This problem stems from a difference between the ways Macintosh OLE and Windows OLE open files. As a result, you cannot save a file on two different operating platforms at the same time.
Case 2
This error occurs in Word 97 for Windows if you save to a MAPROOT type network drive connection on a NetWare server where spaces exist in
the file or folder name.
Case 3
This problem may occur if an anti-virus program running on a network has the ability to scan for macro viruses in documents in shared network
folders.
For example, if you have the following:
a shared folder on a network server
-and-
an anti-virus program is running on the network server that is set to monitor the shared folder,
when you attempt to save a document (across the network) to the shared folder, the anti-virus checker may cause the error to occur.
Case 4
This problem may occur on Novell networks when the AutoRecover files path is either blank or set to a network drive.
According each, please try the following workaround:
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods appropriate to your situation.

Move the document to your local hard disk for editing. Move it back to the server after you finish.
Method 2:
Save a copy of the
file with a different
file name, and work on the copy, either on your hard disk or on the server.

folder on your local drive and then click OK.

Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

Sorting grouped tasks in MS Project 2010

Dear Forum,
I created a view and grouped the tasks in MS Project 2010. The following problem comes up: As I can only change between "ascending" and "descending" while creating the Group, all my tasks sort alphabetically but I want to have them
arranged in chronological order. When I try to sort them, they stay as they are.
One solution I could think of would be to add for example numbers in front of my tasks (e.g. 1_task1, 2_task2..) so Project would arrange them accordingly but that would not look nice, neither would I have to Change it manually each time.
Another solution would be to create a custom field including the sequence and then Group my tasks accordingly but I was wondering if any of you folks know any smart solution to this problem?

I'm using PWA 2010 and open up a portfolio of projects at one time. The best work around I have found is remove the grouping, insert the field called "Project", and then sort by Project, then by start date.

Is MS Project 2013 reverse compatible with MS Project 2010?

We have MS Project 2010 installed in our computers. Our client is working in MS Project 2013. We have to edit a schedule our client is producing. Can we use 2010, or do we have to upgrade?

You can perform this workaround to copy Project custom views via Organizer tool.
Open the Organizer in Project 2003>
Copy Content into the Global Template. More detailed steps:
For Project 2003, on the Tools menu, click
Organizer.
     For Project 2010, click the File tab, click
Into, and then      click Organizer—but see note below for some differences.
In the Organizer dialog box, click the
Views tab.
The list in the right box contains the custom views in the currently      open project.
     Note    to see Project elements from other projects,      you’ll need to open those projects first.
The list on the left contains elements in the Global template (also      knows as Global.MPT). Your job is to move the custom element from the      right side to the left side.
Select the custom view on the right side, and then click
Copy.      The custom view will be copied to the Global template and be displayed on      the left side.
Now, it get’s a little tricky at this point. If your “Corporate Cost      Gantt” view contains columns that you’ve added, then you’ll need to copy      over the associated table
as the next step. The associated table is the      one you specified when you created the custom view in the first place.      Typically, this would be the Entry table for chart views. So your next
step is to click the Tables tab, and then copy the Entry table to      the Global template.

Microsoft Project 2010 Error/Bug Using Filters and AutoFilters

Dear Community Members/Team,
I came across an error/bug while using Filter and AutoFilter options in Microsoft Project 2010. The details are as under:
I have an MS Project 2010 file which has total 3049 activities (IDs).
The linking process (predecessors and successors) is almost complete.
In MS Project 2010 software console, in the bottom left most corner, I have right clicked and enabled the options of "Filter" and "AutoFilter".
In the "View" tab located at top console, I have selected "[No Filter] against the "Filter" icon. Also, from the drop down arrow against the "Filter"
icon, I have enabled "Display AutoFilter". As a result I can see drop down arrows in front of all columns displayed in the file.
I have displayed columns "Duration", "Start", "Finish", "Total Slack", etc.
I used the drop down arrow appearing in front of "Total Slack" column, and I can see some options. At the bottom I can see all the "Total Slack" values with
scroll option available and all the boxes here are checked. I remove the check box in "Select All" field and manually select any random value such as "-11.17 wks".
To my surprise, some values when selected, they are displayed correctly with the relevant activities shown. However some of the values which I select are not appearing and the relevant
activities are not shown and only empty rows are shown. So I use "Clear Filter" and try some other option.
Now, to find those activities, I have to click on the drop down arrow in front of "Total Slack" column, Go to "Filters", and select the last option "Custom".
Now I select show rows where Total Slack "equals" and I select any value from drop down arrow appearing in front of "equals", I can see all those values of "Total Slack" and I randomly select the same value for e.g. "-11.17
wks". This time the relevant activity is displayed correctly which was not shown by using the above method of selecting a certain value by selecting a check box from drop down arrow appearing against any column.

Please go through this thread and tell us if it brings some light. Particularly try with a brand new file to reproduce the error. It could see the error on Ahmad's file, but couldn't reproduce it on a brand new file.

Creation of a Multi-Year Product Roadmap in Project 2010

I am looking to see if I can efficiently create a product roadmap using Project 2010. For a given business unit in our corporation I have product categories and under those categories I have products and/or projects I want to show on a timeline. I
was able to brute force this into a timeline but I would think there is an easier way to do this.
For example, I would like to be able to put the description of the product/project inside the bar on the ghantt chart but I get an error when I try to do that. I increased the bar height to allow for legible text but still no luck.
I want each entry for a given product category to automatically produce a bar of the right color with starting and ending symbols as needed based on the type of entry I add (product versus project).
Is there any way to add an outline to the bars of different colors to designate the difference between a sustaining, anticipated, active, and discontinued product or project?
Or would I be better served to go find an aftermarket piece of software that will do this type of work instead of trying to use MS Project for something it wasn't specifically designed?

tutorial that might help you coloring your bar style. This is based on the resource name but you could have a custom field with your product category which trigger a flag then the bar style will be formated
based on the flag.
Then about the description in the bar, I'm afraid this is not intended for this purpose. What about the note fields?

How to export data from MS Project 2010 to MS Excel 2010 with formatting

I have created a Project 2010 export map to Excel 2010. It works fine. I have two questions that I cannot determine an answer. I'm not sure if its a project or excel setting. I have spend hours trying to make it
work with little success.
1. When the task name field is exported to excel it losses summary/task indent. Is there a way to set it up so it works via the export map?
2. The Start & Finish fields in project is setup as 5/26/11 when they exports to excel it shows up as 5/26/11 8:00 AM. Is there a way to set it up either in project export map or excel so its formated as a date field.
Excel's Format Cell function does not seem to work converting them back to just 5/26/11.
How can I keep the outlines and formatting in my data while exporting it to Excel.
I would appreciate any guidance.

Project takes a long time to open

I have 19 projects. One of them takes longer to open each
time I open it. Once the project is open, I can work in it just
fine. But it also takes forever to generate my primary layout and
any of my printed documentation layouts.
Deleting the .hhc and .xpj files, and then opening the .hhp
file fixes the problem. However, opening the project thereafter
takes longer and longer (up to 15 minutes) to open and I keep
having to delete the .hhc and .xpj files periodically to fix the
problem.
None of my other projects has this problem. What could be
causing this project to growwwwwww?

I had a similar problem once - though it didn't continue to
grow. The project was adding a whole folder of software into my
.chm. It wasn't easy to track down but I have a few questions that
might help.
Do you really need to delete the .hhc file? This is the table
of contents. Is it growing? I would think that if this file really
needed to be deleted the problem would lie in that file.
How much does the project (.xpj) grow by? Does the output
(.chm or WebHelp folder) also inflate? Watch it in Windows
Explorer. This change in size might help you locate the extra
files.

I am trying to open a Project 2010 file in Project 2007, I get an error that asks if I would like to download the converter and I say yes and get a generic product page for Project 2010. I can't locate the file that I need, how do I find it?

MS Project 2010 with Outlook 2013 - "send as attachment" missing function / not working

Office 2013 Professional running on Windows 7 (64bit).
After Re-installing MS Project 2010 today the option under
File (alt-f) --> 'Save & Send' --> 'Send as Attachment' is shaded out / unavailable.
Is this a known integration gap between the older MS Project and Current Outlook ? Alternatively, does anyone have any recommendations to troubleshoot and / or enable the function within MS Project 2010?

p.s I have tried completing a repair on Office 2013 and the MS Project 2010 from within the control panel.
This functionality is working with all other Office 2013 applications in the suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio etc.)

Kinda / sorta ... In Mid 2014 I had MS Project installed and working (I can't confirm if the Send as Attachment was working at that time...) A few days ago I was sent an '.mpp' (MS Project file) for review. When I attempted to open it MS Project
gave me a warning message that it needed to start in safe mode but then failed to start. This seemed weird and thus began two days of googling and investigation.
I elected to uninstall (which also failed) and reinstall (which also failed) the MS Project 2010 since I have the media at hand to do so. At this point I was really truly 'stuck' (p.c term for the younger audience reading this).
My course of action was to engage Microsoft Support (specifically the MS Office group). They verified some registry entries, confirmed installation of MS Project 2010 , confirmed files were installed , available and in the appropriate
spots (files etc.) , tried a few 'fixit' tools , made multiple suggestions that I spend $1000+ on upgrading to MS Project 2013. After ~90 minutes or so they were able to 'Force' the orphaned installation to uninstall. (although
they needed to install and use a 3rd party tool to do it) We then re-installed MS Project 2010 and verified it could start.
After using project a little bit I realized that 'Send as Attachment' option was non-functional. I spent a few hours trying to research (more google) and finally threw in the towel and cried out for help (i.e posted the message that started this
thread).

Issue with turning on project 2010 / 2013 - "There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using, and then try again."

I get the following error after the installation and configuration window of MS Project: "There is not enough memory to complete the operation. To free up available memory, close programs, projects, or windows you aren't using, and then try again."
It happens both with MS Project 2010 and 2013 on a Windows 7 desktop.
I tried installing / uninstalling Office 2010, MS Project, tried installing 32 and then 64 bit versions, clean up, disk error checker, startup changes (msconfig), anti virus, running as Windows 7 and then Windows XP compatible mode.
Nothing helps. I see this issue reported as early as 2007 version of MS projects on Microsoft forums, but I do not see any solution anywhere. Any suggestions on how to fix the issue without having to reformat hard drive? Every other application, including
all other Office programs work seamlessly.
I also tried Microsoft support, after an hour and a half of basically doing what I did before, I was told I have to pay 99$ for "premium" support, so someone can look at this bug.
I have 16 Gb RAM and more than 200Gb or hard drive free, so actual memory is not the problem.

This issue was originally reported with MS Project 2007 and keeps popping up since.

Computer was defragged already. I run more tests, and specifically when MS Projects tries to run, it tries to take all memory, more than 300Gb, on the computer. (DropBox was running at the same time, and warned that there were no space. As soon as MS Project
stopped attempting to configure itself, everything came back to normal and the available space became available again.)
Looking through older forum posts, looks like this application tries to take "unlimited" amount of memory. Some registry fixes are mentioned potentially, but I was not able to apply them.
Since everything else works, this is a MS Project bug reported by multiple users on various versions of Windows, including Vista and 7, so please provide a fix and not 'not a know bug' lie. All the premium support will say, is to format the hard drive, unless
they have a patch or a registry edit solution. If the latter is true, since the issue exists for multiple years, it should have been already been provided to users.
Also, I am not running a SQL server, or any server, this is an installation on a local machine.
