MSI AE2400-068 is rather disappointing

I have purchased a MSI AE2400-068 and I have to say that I am disappointed because of the following reasons:
- Despite the press release and the information on the MSI website, a TV-tuner is not included;
- Despite the press release and the information on the MSI website, a subwoofer is not included;
- The sound sucks, if I do not play anything, the speakers make noise and when I play a CD the sound is distorted;
- Windows 7 was already installed and set up in Bulgarian, which made it impossible to operate the computer (I am from the Netherlands and my knowledge of the Bulgarian language is totally absent) and which indicated that the computer was already operated by someone before me...
- Because I did not return the computer within 8 days after delivery (because I was on holiday for a week), MSI is now saying that they can not do anything for me and I should return to the store, so I have the feeling that this will be a long story with me in the middle with a second hand computer...
Has anyone experience with the sound problems? And is there a solution for these problems?
Thanks!

First of all, I must draw your attention to the following statement clearly shown on the Specifications tab on the MSI website:
Quote
The specifications may change without notice. The actual products sold are different from areas. Please check the detailed specifications with your local dealers.
So for your first statement:
Quote
- Despite the press release and the information on the MSI website, a TV-tuner is not included;
It does also quite clearly say there:
Quote
TV Tuner     Optional (PCI-E interface)
However, for your next statement:
Quote
- Despite the press release and the information on the MSI website, a subwoofer is not included;
You might have a case against your retailer, as it does state:
Quote
Audio     2x5W 5.1 channel speakers+10W Subwoofer
with no mention of being optional, but this would depend on how your retailer was advertising the product.
However, you should definitely take this up with your retailer, especially as you say:
Quote
- Windows 7 was already installed and set up in Bulgarian, which made it impossible to operate the computer
Did you buy this PC from a reputable dealer in the Netherlands? If so, then the unit should have been supplied with Dutch Windows pre-installed.

Has anyone experience with the sound problems? And is there a solution for these problems?
I've yet to see any monitor supplied with superb quality speakers, so I wouldn't expect the earth from something supplied with this unit either. So if you're willing to live with it, you could buy some decent external speakers.
However you may have well obtained a dud unit from your supplier, so you should defintely contact them first and see if they will exchange your Wind Top for you, if you are unhappy with it.

  • MSI AE2400: Toslink output

I have connected my AE2400-068 with my digital amplifier via the Toslink/SDPIF digital output with an optical fibre cable, but I do not get any signal (the cable shows a nice shiny red light, but my amplifier stays dead silent when the input is selected...).
Do I need to switch the digital output on somewhere or tell the computer to use the digital output?

That is strange, I managed to get a signal to my amplifier, but it seems like I have to make a choice: either I select digital output or I select the on-board speakers. In the menu I have to add applications to either the speakers or the digital output and so far I have not been able to get a signal to both.
The reason why I would like to have the signal to both speakers and digital output is that I want to listen music via my amplifier, but if I watch TV, I just want to use the on-board speakers. It would be a hassle to change the settings every time.

  • Law Enforcement Discount rather disappointing

My husband recently became a Law Enforcement Officer, and we heard that Verizon offered great discounts to LEO's, including 23% off plans, no ETF's, upgrade eligibility every 10 months, and even unlimited Data (which is now unavailable to most everyone else).  So we began doing research, and were disappointed to find that those discounts are only available through the Fraternal Order of Police Corporate Discount (http://azfop.com/fop-member-verizon-discount/), which has no contract with the department my husband works for.  The only other discount available is 15% off our plan (compare that to Gap employees who receive 25%, and Coca Cola employees who receive 25-28%).
Now, I don't mean to be "that customer" who complains and complains until they get what they want, but I find it disturbing that Verizon seems to appreciate our public safety workers so little (No discount is offered for ANY military, at least not where I could find it).
All across the country Law Enforcement Officer pay is either decreasing, or going stagnant due to pay-freezes, while the cost of living is increasing.  I for one would like to see Verizon show its support for those who help protect our society on a daily bases, and do this small favor for us (Verizon would have nothing to lose and tons to gain).  Even if you started offering 50% off your plans, unltd data, and free smart phones, I suspect you'd still be making money off us, just not as much as you COULD.
Oh, and while you're at it, you should start extending your discounts to LEO Retirees and Military Retirees.  While searching for an existing post on these forums I came across several posts by LEO's who lost their 15% discounts once they retired.  That's just sad...
So what do you say Verizon?  Will you show more support for our LEO's and military and offer some better discounts (not connected to a union)?  Or will you just say "f*** the police" like so many others nowadays...
For everyone's reference, these are some discounts offered by Verizon's competitors:
    Sprint
    Law Enforcement
    25%
    ARMY/USAA/Military/Airforce
    5%-12%
    AT&T
    Gov. Military and First Aid
    15%-19%
    Army & National Guard
    19%

Each employee discount is unique to each company or organization. The rate and peaks depend on the amount of business that company or organization has with Verizon Wireless and what the two companies have negotiated into the agreement. For example, very few companies have extended the employee discount to their retired employees.

  • MSI AE2400: sound is distorted

I have bought the AE2400 for the second time and I have to say that this machine delivers everything the way I expected! There is even some bass coming out of the subwoofer and when not used, the speakers are dead silent  . It turns out that the subwoofer is passively connected to the speakers, so the sound card is not able to see it as a separate entity.
Furthermore I am now able to watch TV and DVDs with just the remote (no need for the keyboard or mouse anymore!) and everything runs very smooth.
There is just one thing that still bugs me: when I play music (Spotify, iTunes, CD) the sound from the speakers is distorted, it sounds like the input into the amplifier from the sound card is too high, because I do not have this distortion when I use the headphone output to connect the computer to my stereo. Surprisingly, when playing a DVD this phenomenon is less present.
I have tried to find out if I could change the settings of the input level somewhere, but so far I have not succeeded. Does anyone have an idea?
Thanks for all suggestions and tips!

I have found out what the problem is with the distorted sound when playing music: if I turn the SRS sound of in the menu of the Realtek soundcard, the sound is fine!

  • MSI P45 Platinum version 1.0 or 1.1?

I have this board and on the PCB it says "MS 7512 v1.1" could people please post there version number of board as all the good reviews of this board seem to be with version 1.0 and all the issues seem to occur with version 1.1. I have asked 2 users on this forum 4qman and Jack the newbie what version they have but neither has replied they both sing the praises of this board.
    Thanks

Please don't jump to hasty conclusions like "all Revision 1.1 boards are problematic".  There is insufficiant statistical data to base such a conclusion on, but only a handful cases involving a variety of different system configurations.  Note that I was overclocking a 65nm/266 MHZ-FSB processor which may produce significantly different results on this board than a 45nm/333 MHz FSB-CPU.  Also, your v1.1 board might react totally different, once you put in the memory modules I was using.  Who knows?
Another member of the German MSI Forum is also using a v1.0 board in conjuction with a Q9540 and Mushkin Memory Modules. His OC-results have been rather disappointing so far.  Who knows what the cause is.  Might be improper settings, incompatible memory, unoptimized BIOS for his system configuration.
I hear what you say but I have tested using virtually identical components and identical bios and settings and have vastly different results the only difference being board versions. There is an issue here between the 2 versions . I have taken this from 10 instances 6 with v1.1 and 4 with v1.0. I just hope a new bios will fix as v1.0 is not available at retail and why send out review samples that are a different version? Tweaktown reviewed v1.0 and MSi confirmed it was a final retail version which is simply untrue.

  • MSI Optical case badge

Does anyone know where I can purchase an MSI optical case badge?  I was rather disappointed that my DR8-A didn't ship with one (purchased from eWiz.com), while even the X48 combo units I've installed for clients came with them.
I now have a blank spot on my bezel where it should be, as I was counting on it being in the box.
Please help fill this spot on my beast's face

  • MSI NX6800GT: Crap overclockability, or just bad luck?

Okay, I finally got my MSI GF 6800GT in today, and I must say that I'm rather disappointed. First off, it's reference design, and not the copper thingy I expected. Second, the card won't overclock good at all. When I get close to 390 core, 3dmark 03 starts to take pauses at about 3-5 secs all the time, then it carries on. What is this? Some kinda auto-limiting overclock barrier? There are NO artifacts or any other visual corrption on the screen when this happens. I've been overclocking video cards for many many years, and I'm used to artifacts as the natural sign of a max clock, not weird pauses like this. Is this usual on the new series from Nvidia? I've had ATi for over a year now, so all this stuff is new to me.
    So anyway, any suggestions?

No, the core artifacts, but in another way. Usally, memory artifacts looks like black squares popping up around the screen, while core artifacts are more like white dots or squares. When I got rid of the pausing, and pushed it further, the white artifacting from the core appeared - so it's all well!

  • MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Dead? Help!

    Hey all,
Well, the other day I was on my computer playing a game when my mobo fan started making an odd noise (as if switching rpm), so I took off the side of my case and took a look inside. Everything seemed to be functioning properly, then I switched my cpu fan speed via the pci slot speed control. As I switched from High-Medium-Low, I noticed that the fan actually slowed to the point where I could see the blades spinning, at least for a second or so. I found that rather odd, seeing as how I've never seen a fan (especially a cpu fan) slow to the point that I could see the blades spin. Anyway, a couple of hours later, I shut down and went to sleep.
The next day I had my comp on for about maybe 30mins to an hour or so when suddenly I heard an alarm from the computer speaker, so I was like, ":censored:?" since I had never heard it before. It was evidently the temperature warning, which I had set to 70C. So I shut down within 15 seconds and opened up the side of my case.
I noticed that the cpu fan wasn't moving at all (usually I'd open the case in time to see the spin-down). So I turned the computer back on and the fan didn't budge, so I immediately powered down, assuming that the CPU Fan had died. Later on, I hooked the fan itself up to a free power cord in my sister's computer and booted up, along with the speed controller, flipping from medium to high to low without any problems.
I then did screwed the fan back to the heatsink in my comp and booted up. I went into the bios an noticed that the rpm was 8k, which is way too high for my fan (normally 5k). So i began switching from high, medium, to low once again, then I saw that the rpm reader in the bios went to 0. So I looked back in the side of my case and saw that the cpu fan was once again dead. At this point I concluded that it was the fan and was about to order the Volcano 12.
A day later I placed the fan inside my sister's computer on a free cord, yet again, and yet again, it worked fine.
I once again put it in my computer to test and this time it worked fine, even while switching between speeds. Unfortunately, I then noticed that the mobo fan was not moving, then began to move.
Well, I'm guessing now that it's simply the motherboard that has a short, since both the motherboard fan as well as the cpu fan have randomly been dying the past few days. The motherboard fan; however, has switched rpm many times in the past from 5k to 3k.
It could also be a PSU problem, but I have Antec 400watt psu and it's been working fine for the past 2 years, so I doubt it. I've had the motherboard for a little over a year. I upgraded my cpu from 2200+ to 3000+ in July. That's also when I bought the cpu fan. The motherboard fan began fluctuating in rpm noticeably back in April or May of this year.
Yesterday, I used the computer again and had it on for about 2 hours or so and I had speedfan monitoring the temps and the rpm. The temps stayed relatively stable: 48 cpu, 44 mobo.
But alas, the RPMs were totally [blame me for the swear filter] up. At one point, both the mobo and cpu fan speeds were reading 0, even though both continued to spin within the case and the temps remained the same. Then after 30mins or so, they cpu fan began reading again at 40,000-42,000rpm, which is obviously incorrect, seeing as the fan is rated for around 5k. I got/get the same readings in the bios, both fans reading at 0rpm as they continue to physically spin.
Also, during a number of times that I've started up the comp within the past few days, the motherboard northbridge fan wasn't spinning at all and didn't begin to until a few minutes into my windows session.
Also, I took out the NB fan and noticed a slight crack in the back of it.
I was considering simply just buying the Volcano 12 and the MSI K7N2 Delta2 Platinum rather than RMAing the mobo. Then perhaps an Antec 550W psu, if necessary.
Any ideas what I should replace and in which order? And has anybody else encountered any similar problems with this mobo (at least with the mobo rpm, which has been a prob for about 6months on and off)?
I bought the mobo along with a 2200+ in July of 2003. I upgraded the ram from 256 to 512 in April 2004 (which is around the time I started hearing rpm probs with the mobo fan) and I upgraded the cpu in July of 2004
    Many Thanks!

Could be a fluctuating PSU that's breaking down power to the MB. You have a whole lot of components dragging that PSU down. With what you have in your rig I would run either an Antec or Enermax 550W. Best way to be sure is to borrow a PSU or buy one from a store with a good return policy so that you can return it if indeed it turns out to be the MB. If I don't have your board here on my bench to test the only thing I can suggest to you is to swap out components unfortunately.

  • Disappointed about the "early upgrade" and "free" LTE phone promo...

I must say I'm rather disappointed with Verizon as of late.  First, I was told that adding my wife to my plan wouldn't interfere with any of our services and then was charged $500 in text message fees when I found the store had not put my unlimited texting back where it was supposed to be.  Then, I was given the $15 unlimited data promotion for a year which was also taken off after adding the wife to my plan.  Neither of these caveats were explained to me by anybody when these "promotions" were given.  I guess it comes as no surprise, then, that this one was a load of garbage too.
I have talked to several customer service representatives and Lord I must say there are dozens of curse words I would like to use right now.  I logged in to MyVerizon the other night after checking up on data usage since I have unlimited data but the wife is capped at 2GB.  I see a promotion in the bottom window "Recommended for You" that says I can get a free upgrade to a 4G LTE phone at no cost to me.  Obviously, I'm going to click on the link as I hadn't really thought of upgrading to 4G's higher end phones until the prices came down a little more.  Instead of being given the option to choose from my phones, it adds the Nexus to my cart and says I have to pay full upgrade price.  I go back to the other phones, and now they all say full upgrade price.  I go back to the home page, and now the "Free 4G phone" offer isn't even showing up.
Now, if you're still following this, I immediately called customer service and the first person I spoke to seemed more interested in getting off of the line with me as they advised me to wait for the promotion to pop back up and I will get it for sure.
I called back a couple of days later when I didn't see it and spoke to a nice young lady who then told me that she wasn't sure why it had done that to me but that I was eligible for the 4G discount - $100 off of any LTE phone and that I misunderstood "Free LTE phone".
Look.  I know the difference between "$100 off" and "Free".  One costs money, the other doesn't.  One gives me a discount on the phone I would have upgraded to later this year, and the other gives it to me for free.  Why would I upgrade now to save money on a phone that I will buy discounted in the future?
I told her that was not what I was offered and that I want what I had been offered.  She went to speak to a supervisor, and then came back and told me that the free LTE deal was a south-only promo.  Fair enough, but then why was I offered the deal and then all efforts were made to prevent me from going back to take advantage of it?  When I mentioned this, she said that her supervisor had said that they could give me the free phone if I agreed to drop my unlimited data to 5GB/monthly as that is what the southern promotion was.
I did some research and spoke to a friend who lives in the south and their promo was a free phone with unlimited data grandfathered in.  So what the heck gives with this misinformation?  I felt as if they knew I wouldn't give up unlimited data and were just trying to get me off of the phone.
Finally, I spoke with a gentleman tonight who seemed helpful until we arrived at the same point.  Except he told me that the previous customer service reps had misinformed me again and that the southern promotion was indeed grandfathered unlimited data.  I told him "Great, sign me up then".  Then the disappointment set in.  He said that it couldn't be done at all. He said I should have taken the offer last night and then had my unlimited data reinstated (as there is a 14-day policy for such a thing apparently).  So I asked why it was offered to me before with the intention of getting me to give up my unlimited data but now it wasn't being offered to me at all.  I was told "I don't know, I'm sorry".  Well, that doesn't fix the problem, does it?  He tried everything he could to sell me the lesser phones (that I already mentioned were a step down from my current phone - the Fascinate) and then basically ended the call saying nothing more could be done.
This is absolutely ridiculous to be treated this way.  I have paid my bill on time, and I know that Verizon is the most expensive carrier out there.  I have cheaper options, but I chose Verizon because the service is incomparable.  Why am I being told lie after lie after lie about what can and can't be done and being offered promos that I can't even get?  This wouldn't have even been an issue if I had just been given the original promotion I was offered without losing my unlimited data and I feel like your associate simply enjoy dangling carrots in front of peoples' faces.
I use quite a bit of data and I enjoy my service but my patience is beginning to wear very thin between incompetent store associates and lying customer service representatives.  With my upgrade coming up soon and my contract ending soon after I'm beginning to wonder if I made the right choice in leaving AT&T at all.
Utter nonsense.  I feel cheated and worst of all I feel as if I was baited into a promotion I will now never get despite the fact that it was promised to me one night and then forbidden the next.

And to make it even worse, each person told me to just "check back later" and "maybe the phone I wanted" would be discounted.
If it was "maybe" discounted, why not just save the trouble, the customer, and the time, and just give me what you offered me?
    So annoyed right now....

Dear Friend don't get angry too quickly. I also have a socket 939 Athlon 3000+ Winchester. In start MSI K8N SLI Platinum was not allowing me to OC more than 220FSB in BIOS. Although in Windows I can OC it to 2.16 GHZ with NVidia NTune. It's 240FSB. You are facing the same problem that I was facing. Its 219MHZ Bug for Winchester CPUs.
All you need to do is when you are OC'ing more than 219 MHZ, just set you HT multiplier to 1x and you can go upto 260MHZ FSB via BIOS. When you get to the desktop of windows use any software to set the multiplier back to 4x or 5x (depends on how much you OC). Nvidia Ntune is a good software for this purpose. Plz keep in mind that Winchester cores are not too much overclocking friendly CPUs. They won't go beyond 2.4 GHZ and instability is bound to happen after 2.3 GHZ.

  • Disappointed with home screen on my Nokia 5800

I'm pleased overall with my Nokia 5800 (compared to my previous phone, a Nokia 6300), but I'm rather disappointed with the home screen options.  The Contacts Bar theme is a great idea, but why only FOUR contacts?  Why not let me fill up the entire screen or let it scroll side to side with a quick dwipe left or right?
Or if using the Shortcut Bar theme, why not allow a contact bar to be one item it shows among the rows of information (again, swipe left/right to scroll for more than four)?
Are there any other themes available from Nokia or third parties which provide a more powerful home screen?

I have a file that you install after installation of Handy Shell that then makes all the icons default instead of a row of handy shell icons and a row of Nokia icons, i'll up a screen shot for you.
If anyone interested in the file let me know, be aware though that you do NEED Handy Shell first.

  • Question about 74GB Raptor and the ubiquitous "F6"

    Hey All,
I just installed my raptor and Windows XP, then SP2, etc.  without any problems.  I didn't press F6 before the Windows install.  I'm rather disappointed with the speed of the Raptor given all the good reviews I've heard about its speed.  Everything works pretty well and Windows identifies the HD.  I've installed it on SATA3 in case I want to overclock.  Anyway, my question is:  Would reinstalling Windows but doing the whole "F6" SATA Driver install help to improve performance?
Here's my speed test results from Device Manager:
    Theoretical Limit: 150
    Burst Speed: 113.4
    Sustained Speed: 71.3
HD is listed as WDC WD740GD-00FLA2
I have the nVidia nForce3 250 Parallel and Serial ATA Controller (v2.6) listed.  I have installed newest nForce Drivers.  Should I enable Command Queing?  Any BIOS options that would help?   Thanks!

    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
    WD Raptor 74GB
    ATI Radeon 9800 XT
    512 MB PC3200 Corsair at 2.5-3-3-6

Anyone notice performance increase or decrease of their HD when using the nVidia IDE SW drivers?  particularly with a 74GB Raptor?  I've also heard of burner issues when installing the IDE SW but have not used my burner yet.

  • Screen defect of new GT60 2OD

    Hi,
first off, this is by far the best system I have owned so far.
Unfortunately I just got a display defect, I have 2 lines, a red one vertical and a larger white line (varying pixels wide) horizontally running across my display.
I did the following to narrow it down to specific components:
    - system works flawlessly via HDMI on an external screen, even with heavy duty applications, therefor no hardware error on GeForce side. (Using it to write this post)
    - lines show up right from the beginning, even on the BIOS screen, therefore no strange display driver issue.
    - No change regarding the issue when changing the angle of the lid, so cable is unlikely the root cause.
Therefore my assumption is that the panel is actually defect and needs to be replaced.
Unfortunately the notebook is just 10 days old and my primary workstation, so is there anything MSI can help me with as this book is really brand new? Or do I have to remove the larger HDD (need to keep a 2x back-up for my work) and send it in for repairs for and unknown period of time? I live in Seattle and could only find a MSI repair center in CA.
Any help or input would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Sorry to see this happen on such a great piece of hardware. But it happens to the best of us. I had my GX60 for 3 months before my HDD failed unexpectedly...
This could be a series of things. Could be a faulty panel or something just came loose in the laptop. Hard to say just by looking at it. But it is good you narrowed it down so you know root cause.
The first thing you can try to do is to return it to the store and ask for a new one. Sometimes the retail store you purchase it from has its own replacement policy for faulty products, especially during the early stages of owning it.
Otherwise you will have to submit an RMA to MSI to get it fixed. If the warranty policy is anything like the one here in Australia, MSI should arrange for a courier service to pick it up and send it back to you, free of charge. But I would suggest checking your warranty policy and find out how they handle RMAs in the US. It's possible the RMA policy is different.
    Hi,
I just checked with their service hotline. It is a little different here. I am responsible for shipping (incl. costs for package and insurance). It will then take them up to 14 business days to repair it.
They verified that I can remove the hard disk to secure my data and keep it during the time of the repair. It is OK to break the seal (they pointed out that this applies to USA/Canada only) but I will be responsible if I break stuff inside (which makes sense).
So I am rather disappointed that, if I want my $2000 laptop repaired after 10 days due to a hardware defect, I have to pay for that.
I now reached out to the store I bought it from, to see what they can do.
To be honest, if this is their standard policy for repair I will not buy another MSI notebook if the store gives me a full refund. It's disappointing!
