Multiple ADE on NT

We currently have applications developed in Forte 2. Our base
development platform is Windows NT 4.0. We are getting ready to start
development using Forte 3.0.F.2. My question is how do I get these two
versions of the ADE to exist on NT 4.0? We will need to be able to
either R2 or R3 on the same workstation. Not necessarily at the same
time, although that would be nice.

Hi,
you can use a third party tool like service+ which turn a java
application into a service. You might have problems with interactive
login (application might receive shutdown message on logoff and
terminate) and unclean shutdowns though. We set it up for a test
environment and had 4 instances running on one NT box without problems.

I believe this is a limitation with no known workaround. You'll have to
either use batch files or UNIX. (IMHO, if you're running that many
instances on a single box, you're better off on UNIX anyway).

Help with multiple ADE accounts

Hi, I have a bit of a problem and was hoping someone more wise in the ways of Adobe could help me out, as my searching has failed so far. Back when I first got into ereading, I discovered Sony and set myself an account with them under my college email. Then I was given my Kobo Vox, which I setup under my personal email, and have mostly used since. I am going to be losing the college email, and my old prs-350 sony is dying. Back then I didn't realize that doing it that way created two different Adobe ID's. I was wondering if there was some way to merge the accounts under my personal email,and keep both sets of books. I know if I sign in to the ADE website, I can change my email address, will that make it so all the books from both stores will have the same Adobe ID? Or can I call Adobe customer service and have them do it? Has anyone managed that?

Multiple ADE passwords on the same computer

i have digital editions 3.0 installed on my laptop and download from both Barnes and Noble and overdrive. I can't seem to "unlock" the Barnes and Noble downloads, the Overdirve works fine. Can there be more than 1 password on ADE ?

Multiple entries for same title in ADE title list

I have 6 entries for the same title in the ADE title list. All have the same date and time added. All but one are blank in the "Last Read" column. On my computer I have only 1 epub file for this title. Why do I have multiple entries for the same title? If I delete all entries except for the one that has a date and time in the Last Read column will that be okay -- will I still be able to access the book?

ADE Authorisation on multiple workstations?

Hi, I have installed ADE 2.0 on multiple workstations using the silent install command line; "ADE_2.0_Installer.exe /S"
When we try to open one of the free books from Adobe, each workstation is asked to get authorised.
Is there a way to authorise multiple workstations at once using a script? (export/import registry keys)
I tried and cannot find the proper keys!

Would there not be a way for Adobe to allow us to manually authorize each of our workstations using a command line?
We have over 2000 workstations that we would need to install ADE and having to Authorize each PC using "sneaker ware" is quite rediculous!
If we could install the application then run a separate command line to authorize each workstation in an automated fashion, would be much easier!
Would there be a way to un-compile the EXE file to extract the bundled installer. From there, there might be a hidden EXE to run a manual authorization?!?!?
Adobe is maling it difficult for government agencies and other large corporation to easily deploy thier applications!

How do I setup ADE: multiple users / multiple devices

Hi,
I'm new to this DRM stuff and totally confused as to how it works, and the implications of different setups. I've seen lots of posts suggesting if ADE is not setup correctly from the start, you end up with a cascade of problems trying to correct the installation, and having to play around in the registry.
As I understand it, ADE is a download client, encrypter/decrypter process, a transfer client, and a book renderer.
Although I've never done this, I guess what I want is the sort of setup you would have at an internet cafe. Someone can bring in their reader (already registered with their home computer). Go online, buy a book, use their Adobe Id to download the e-book (?) and transfer it to their reader. And read it.
I'm not sure about which parts of the Authorization/Registration/Encryption process are linked to each other.
I have read that ADE does not write anything to the e-reader during registration. But rather reads the serial number of the e-reader to identify it. Presumably ADE re-encrypts the book using the devices serial number when it transfers the book to the e-reader. So, according to the post, there is no problem having an e-reader registered to many installations of ADE.
Similarly I've read that authorization is only required to establish your rights to download the encrypted book.
However, I've also seen posts that contradict these.
Also I've seen that as the book is encrypted for a specific reader only during transfer, you can't use explorer to copy books onto the reader.

Running Multiple Forte ADEs on the same box

You can run multiple versions of Forte by installing them in different
directory paths and setting environment variables to point to the
correct one. For example:
REM Setup Forte Environment
set FORTE_ROOT=k:\forte\qa2
set FORTE_NS_ADDRESS=stardev:5022
REM Run application
ftexec -fi k:\userapp\rightsto\cl3\rights0
Running multiple versions concurrently is ok.

Set the property -Dtangosol.coherence.localport=8050 when running the first node of the second cluster.
The problem is with the property tangosol.coherence.localport, default value=8088 so when you run the first cluster, the WKA port matches the port used by the local node and so it able to form the cluster. But when you run the second cluster, the first node is looking for a member which is using the port =8050 for cluster formation which will not happen until you set the property -Dtangosol.coherence.localport=8050 on one of the nodes.

Multiple users on computer

This question is somewhat answered on other forum posts, but it begs to be asked again. If enough people ask, maybe the bean counters will start to understand how regular customers buy and use books. Then those same features will be available on eBooks.
Just installed ADE on one computer, under one user account. (System: Windows XP PRO sp3). Did this as both my wife and myself are getting eBook readers for Christmas. (Augen "TheBook" units)
First issue / question why not have multiple user ID's supported on single device through the ADE interface directly?
Can I actually have multiple activated ID's on XP via separate user log-ins? (Again, ADE should be one program instance with multi-users IDs to the one instance, not separate Windows accounts. It should also have a share/loan function and frankly an ownership transfer function.)
The eReader device itself does not appear to support multiple user logins. So, I guess that means the reader is lock to a single Adobe ID?
When will the above changes occur if ever?
(I am also posing this question to Augen's tech support.)
My soapbox comments to feed up to the publishing world's bean counters that are forcing DRM and fixing prices.
Real world buying habits. Single book bought by myself or wife may be read by both of us. (Gee! Isn't that a surprise! We don't buy 2 copies.) And maybe occasionally loaned to a friend, passed on to a friend, donated to charity or sold at a garage sale. More likely sitting on a shelf after one or 2 reads.
Real world current MSRP/list price on a new eBook: As much as or maybe slightly less than the same printed Hardbound book. More than same printed paperback book.(Viewed recent Mary Higgins Clark book as example: 75% of Amazon hardcover price and 163% of not yet released paperback price.)
Real world cost of delivering eBook vs printed book: About one-tenth the cost of a printed book. And that is with all the extra manpower wasted on DRM programing and servers.It would be a twentieth without the DRM costs.
Printing, warehousing and transporting books is not cheap. I am in the printing business. I know this.
An eBook cuts out all the labor and material of printing, all the costs of physical warehouse and transport, and wasted un-sold product or remaindered product. Unsold returns from retailer back to distributor or manufacturer very by catagory and title. But range from 10-50%. That all is gone with an eBook.
So, every level from publishing to retail is more profitable with the ebook model.
Real world use of an Ebook with DRM ePub. Restricted to single user on apparently 6 computers and 6 portable devices. Effect is that at best I can buy a book and others in my household may read it on one of the registered devices as well. I have paid as much or more than a trade paperback. Publisher has received a higher profit by far and so has seller. Author has not received a higher percentage or royalty most likely.
I can not sell it as used, I can not donate it to charity or library. This, even though I have paid full retail and that is effectively ten plus times as much over traditional printed book production and distribution costs. Distributor actually may have higher costs as they must maintain records access for an extended time, which with court cases will in the future probably mean 20 plus years. But, that cost should be well offset by no warehousing or brick & mortar store costs.
Of coarse I can still read the full printed library of Mark Twain books that my grandmother purchased for my father and uncle in the 1920's today. And those books will last another 100 years with moderate care. So I am paying ten times more than cost, and book may last 20 years (with luck and no business failure) INSTEAD OF 200.
Long story short, I am willing to purchase an ePub even with reasonable DRM protections and at a price at or lower than trade paperback, even at 75% of hard bound one new releases on occasion. But, at the much higher profit potential of a single purchased book to publisher and retailer, one should be able to use and share it the same as a printed book.
As it is, I can not even directly buy an eBook on most sites as a gift. Don't publishers know that books a often bought as gifts?
Publishers: If your eBook sales are not at the level you would expect, maybe, just maybe the points above may have something to do with why consumers are not buying into eBooks as you would hope.
I guess that ends my rant for now.

This might not be the right way but since I was having similar issues today, this something that worked.
I placed the domain.site file on my time capsule and the Imac which I created the pages with remembered the site.
On my mac mini I can access the site it if I open the domain.site file directly using the finder and it will then open iweb on my mac mini. If I open iweb directly, it seems to remember previous iweb sites that I created but not the current one.

Authorize computer in ADE

Can multiple users authorize one computer on different windows login accounts? Several family members in our household have adobe IDs + library cards. When I connect my NOOK color to transfer an ebook within Adobe Digital Editions, it compares the email address registered on my device to the email address authorized within the Adobe Digital Editions (which is my daughter's because we set up her ID first). Does this limit only one user per computer when downloading ebooks through this software?

There's a paragraph in the Help section that talks to this point. ADE was
not intended for multiple users as you describe, but it has some limited
capabilities.

"This message has not been downloaded from the server" - Multiple devices all using Exchange Active Sync

We are having this issue across multiple IOS devices ranging from IOS version 5.x up to the latest 6.1.2. Many (not all) emails sent to the devices are unreadable and simply state: "This message has not been downloaded from the server". Microsoft believes this to be some sort of bug with the IOS devices in the way they are handling the SSL encryption.
Facts:
- Devices are connected to an Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 6 via Active Sync (No POP3, IMAP or SMTP)
- issue occurs on multiple IOS devices within the organization ranging from IOS 5.x up to the latest 6.1.2
- Issue occurs on both external cellular data and internal wireless networks
- Not all emails sent to the devices result in the error, but issue does tend to occur more frequently from certain senders/domains
- Using the same user account on an android phone does not result in an issue (even when receiving the exactly same email that has been sent to the IOS devices)
- Closing mail app / rebooting device does not resolve the issue
- Doesn't appear to matter what the mesage format is (can be html, plaintext, etc)
- Spent nearly 7 hours with Microsoft going through the Exchange server configuration and looking for possible causes. None have been found and all testing indicates things are setup correctly.
- This is not a case of Issue 2.3 listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563324 (verified by Microsoft Support)
- If we disable SSL on the IOS device and connect via plain HTTP the messages are displayed correctly!
- If we use a different SSL certificate, the issue still occurs - so not a problem with the original cert.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what would cause this? Does the ISO devices have any sort of log that would indicate why it's reporting this error? The current error is pretty unhelpful.

GFI Have a solution for this problem. It is to do with iOS implementation of reading the message headers when SPF compliance modifications are made by GFI.

we can see the window heading, description which are mostly hard-coded here I want to print these in both language as fallows,

and the above headings in English are hard-coded.

Please support more complex characters in ADE - time to switch reading engines !

In ADE 1.7 (and previous versions) there has always been a lack of support for Latin extended characters - such as a 'H' with a dot below - as shown at this post here:

In version 1.7.x these characters appear as a question mark '?'. (as shown below)
Now in version 1.8.x they appear as a square with a cross inside (as shown below):
To code up a H character with a dot below the following character entities simply DO NOT WORK in ADE.

Any webkit based reading engine (e.g. iBooks) renders these obscure characters CORRECTLY - as shown below:-

Please can Adobe support these character in RMSDK. It's a fundamental requirement if your RMSDK based e-reader is to compete anywhere near the more sophisticated webkit.
I think the future of ADE is less about re-skinning (which IMHO seems to be the main changes I'm seeing in version 1.8) and more about considering a switch from RMSDK to the more superior Webkit. (Appreciate Adobe cannot liscence webkit and make $$$$$, so this core change probably will never happen!). Alternatively update RMSDK to a 21st century reading engine and support this type of scenario.
I have clients who's use ADE for proofing ePUB and it always hurts to tell them that ADE is the reason for some of the complex characters appearing cr*p. Now that can't be good for Adobe's reputation.
