Multiple HDs

Hey, Iv got a question about using multiple HDs while editing.
The way my setup is now I have two Firewire HDs (320 and 160) daisy chained together. I use the 320 for the capture scratch and all of the Final Cut Express files. I just recently purchased Final Cut Studio and a 1 TB HD. I was going to use the 1 TB HD as my capture scratch and then use the 320GB for all of the project files. I was just wondering if this will slow down the firewire connection or if it would be better to just put all the files on the 1TB HD.
Thnx Matt
P.S. By project files I mean anything other than the captured video that you would put in the browser, such as Songs, titles from Livetype, and Pictures.

Are you editing on the PowerBook or a Tower? (Sounds like PowerBook ) If the PowerBook it is worthwhile getting a FW or eSATA card (probably FW card) to get extra busses (or a card for the Tower if you have one) will help increase performance...FWIW when I have had to I have daisy chained drives for DV and HDV and it works, but if you split them you are better off since they will not be going over the same connection. Practically though you may not see much difference but since the cards are so inexpensive it is a worthwhile item to have.

  • Time Machine with multiple HDs

    Hi,
tried searching but couldn't find an answer so here goes:
Can you use multiple HDs with Time Machine? As in: I have 3 external 500gb HDs. Can I get three more to back up each one?

TM will only back up to one drive at a time. Other applications, such as SuperDuper, will back up to multiple drives. You could use Backup in Applications to back up selective files to another drive.

  • Neo2 Problem: Multiple HDs are seen as the same connection

Ok, I'm just checking to see if this is indeed a problem
Windows recognizes my 2 sata drives and 1 IDE drive all under the same device 0.
When I try to install XP sp2, all the options on the screen show the same device #0.
I believe this also corrupted my original install by messing up the HAL.DLL
    Any clue what's going on?
I'm so fed up with this board.  I might just order a VIA.
edit:  My orginal problem of HAL.DLL corruption came up when I upgraded from bios 1.2 to 1.3.  I went back to 1.2 with no success.  I'm thinking something is messed on board.   But if somebody could tell me what their devices look like in a win XP install screen, I'd appreciate it.
I've ran memtest for hours with no errors.  Everything is stock clocked.
edit2:  Another thing, I've ran WD diags on my HDs. No bad sectors so they should be clean

No, I didnt do the f6 option....
I think I got it though.  I disabled the other drives and put the raptor that I wanted to use as the highest boot priority HD.
I was able to get an OS to take and I then made sure that there were 0 other drives  that had an OS copy.
I think during one of my bios changes I forgot to change back the HD priority and it booted a drive with a old copy of XP on it instead of the raptor.
    Hence my system32/hal.dll error
Didn't know what was going on.   So I think I got my rig semi stable
    Time to preload HL2
Thanks guys for saving me 100 bucks..  I was at newegg browsing around

  • Backing up multiple HDs onto Multiple HDs

I have 4 1TB hard drives that I am trying to backup onto 8 500GB hard drives. I have done this in the past manually, but its been a major headache, as I ususally have to split up folders across multiple drives to make it fit properly.
Can anyone recommend and application that would assist in this kind of backup procedure...in particular, one that would also allow me to synchronize/update the backup to reflect changes made to the source drives?
    Thanks!

THanks for the suggestion...I've thought about doing that, but the problem is that when you do configure two 500GB hard drives together using disk utility, it somehow consumes a relatively small amount of hard drive space to pull-off the raid configuration...this leaves my two 500Gb drives with something like 900GB of disk space, and that won't cut it for my backup, as the source drive is completely maxed out...Plus there are performace issues, as well as reliability issues involved when creating a RAID using two independant drives by using Disk Utility...
Thanks for the suggestions though...Anyone else know of an application out there that can assist me in accomplishing my goal here? Thanks!

  • Combining multiple HDs into one big 'un

So I see where one can make multiple libraries and one can have multiple devices, multiple accounts etc etc... but here's my question. I have an external HD that is holding all my media and is running out of room... Is it possible to "daisy chain" some drives together (i.e. LaCie d2 Quadras, both at 320 GB) and have iTunes read this as one 640 GB drive? In essence so that when I open iTunes and proceed to play content, I don't have to switch out to get it to shuffle music around... I'll prolly end up buying a TB drive but I wanted to ask some of the more enlightened folk on the boards... 'preciate any info!
    Cheers!

If you go into the iTunes preferences, you can set the location of the iTunes library. What isn't immediately apparent to most people is that this setting only sets the location of FUTURE additions to your library. Anything already in the library will remain where it is and continue to be accessed from that location.
So to answer your question, you can add an additional drive, point iTunes to a location on the new drive, and everything already in your library will stay on your current external drive. Anything new will be added to the new drive.
Once you get your BIG drive that can hold everything, you can change the location to that drive. NOW use the consolidate command which will then copy everything NOT in the current iTunes library location to that location. In other words, anything stored outside the currently set iTunes folder location will then be copied in there and the library updated to reflect the new location.
You can not delete the stuff off the other drives if you wish.
    Cheers,

  • Problem Connecting Multiple HDs to AEBS

Sounds like this is a recurring theme on this discussion board.
I am able to get 2 drives (WD 500GB My Book Essential) working using a powered USB hub, but when I connect a 3rd drive, the whole system crashes. I've connected the drive in pairs, and the drives will all connect singularly or in a pair, but once all 3 are connected, the AEBS crashes.
I've "upgraded" to firmware 7.1 (before I knew it was causing problems). BTW, I also have 2 printers hooked to the USB hub.
I started with an unpowered hub, and couldn't get even one drive working. Once I went to a powered hub, I was able to run 2. Hopefully this will help someone a little.

  • Multiple HDs w/ separate sleep settings?

I've got a mac pro with 4 internal hard drives. The three drives that aren't the boot disc I access maybe once a day and they account for most of the noise the machine makes.
Is there any utility or terminal command that would allow me to set the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" setting on a per drive basis?

As it stands right now, when both displays go to sleep, upon waking, mirroring or extending the desktop no longer works. The secondary display just repeatedly goes to sleep, and won't wake back up unless I restart.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
    Nope.

  • Printing checks to multiple printers

Based on organizations my AP checks print to different printers. I'm using one check template for all of them. How critical is it to have the actual printers to be exactly same model? Do I need to even worry about this?
    Tomas

    Welcome to the discussions!
    +Can a TC be strictly wireless?+
Yes, although in this type of setup the TC will be a wireless backup device only. If you have another Apple"n" router creating your main network, you could also configure the TC to "extend a wireless network" to provide more wireless coverage.
+Can I have more then one printer attached?+
Assuming your printer is compatible with the USB port on the TC, (not all printers are), and you use a powered USB hub, you can attach multiple printers.
+(and will a USB to parallel adapter work?+
Can't provide an answer on that one, but would be surprised if it worked.
+Multiple HDs hanging off it work? Is there a limit to the number of devices? and if so, a limit per type or just total?+
As long as you use a powered USB hub and each HD has it's own power supply, there's really no set limit on the number of devices within reason.
+And is WiFi backups still painfully slow?+
Backups will occur as quickly as your current wireless network allows.
    +(and can I move a BU to the TC?)+
Not sure what you mean here. The TC is designed for Time Machine backups, but you can also store other files on the drive if you wish, providing that there is plenty of free space for Time Machine to operate correctly.

  • Can Time Machine combine two HDs into one big one?

I know Mountain Lion added the ability to use multiple HDs simultaneously (I have done this). As it stands, it just rotates among the different HDs each time it does a backup. Is there a way to have OSX combine two HDs to make a 'virtual' bigger HD?
The reason I ask this is because my existing iMac has a 1TB internal hard drive. I have two external LaCie drives of 2 TB each that I use for Time Machine. I'm planning on getting one of the new iMacs and custom-ordering it with a 3TB internal drive. Obviously a 2TB drive won't fit, but if OSX can combine the two HDs virtually, it'll end up with a 4TB volume, right? Can it do that?

A hardware RAID is as reliable as the hardware. I believe the LaCie product you mention is a hardware RAID. I have no opinion of its reliability, and I don't know whether you can configure it as a mirrored RAID.
Maybe I should clarify. I see no reason to use a RAID for backup unless you need the space. If you need a 6 TB Time Machine volume, you have to use a RAID -- striped, not mirrored. For the safety of your data, regardless of the amount, you need redundant backups, not RAID. That is, you should have at least two independent backups, at least one of which is off site at all times.

  • How to set up 2 time capsules to back up one computer?

what can i say, i run a music studio, dj off of mp3's as well, and edit video in my spare time
so, i've got terrabytes of data, on multiple external and internal hard drives, and have therefore invested in 2 (two) 1tb time capsules. however, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to set them up to both backup my different and various hard drives on one computer! at the moment, i can get both visible on one network, but only one TC at a time will backup, the other just sits there gathering dust as far as i can tell.
i'm running a mac pro, os 10.5.8, with an 4 disc external drive - 3 disks with various data (one contains video data, one mp3s, and one protools recording data) and one running super duper to make weekly clones of my main hard drive. i'd like to configure one time capsule to backup, say, my hard drive and protools disks, and one time capsule to backup the video and mp3 drives.
i've searched quite bit on google and here for a solution, but there's a dearth of information on this subject! hasn't anyone else out there done this? surely i'm not the only person out here with loads and loads of critical data in his home needing more than one tb of backup...

That is correct. For backups, the Time Capsule is basically just a dumb HD; the Time Machine software on your Mac is what controls things, and it can only have one destination at a time, whether it's backing-up one or multiple HDs.

Again, TM won't do that. Only one "instance" of TM will run at a time, and you can only have one set of exclusions (to limit what it backs up) at a time.

No, but it's fairly rare, and few want to do this wirelessly. And note that Time Machine was not designed for such situations, but as a very simple, "set it and forget it" backup tool for the novice to intermediate user, who's likely never used any backup app at all.
For a Time Capsule to back up everything (except the clone), about your only option is to forget the TC's internal HD. Instead, get either a single external HD that's 2 or 3 times the space of what you want backed-up, or enough smaller ones that you can make a +Concatenated RAID set+ large enough. Attach this to the TC and back-up to it.
But for that much data, this is a very slow and cumbersome solution.
You probably need a mixed solution of some sort; using Time Machine to the Time Capsule for your boot drive and as much of the more volatile data on the other drive(s) as is reasonable; then SuperDuper or another app to back up the other data to an external HD.

  • Best Mac for the Job

We are looking to upgrade our editing system.
We produce 1-2 minute motion graphics in After Effects CS4.  We also import miniDV footage and use 'multi-cam edit' in Premier Pro CS4 to produce a 30-min T.V. show.
We are looking at a Mac Pro.  Give me your recommendations on Processor, Ram, HD, Graphics Card and how to preview on TV video monitor.  We have a 2TB in-house server, so I don't think I need multiple HDs for media storage.
    Thanks in advance.

Neither Harm nor Jim are correct. I use both platforms and the Mac wins hands down. Regardless of hardware, OS X is far superior to the world of hurt that is Windows. I would recommend getting the base quad-core Mac Pro and adding RAM from a Mac specialized 3rd party supplier (you will save a ton of money this way). The Mac Pro is a great machine and a snap to upgrade. Comparable Windows PCs are actually more expensive than the Mac Pro so it is also a good bargain. The stock graphics card should be good enough for your needs. With a DVI or mini display adapter it should permit you to connect to a TV monitor.

  • Air Port Extreme Remote Administration?

Is it possible to administer the Air Port Extreme remotely?
My Linksys router has been doing OK lately, but have been noticing issues like speed latency.  I think this is true not only since another B or G Wifi device connected to the router causing the rest of the speeds to decrease, but also since I moved into a location that has many WiFi hotspots - specifically my condo complex.  My conclusion is buying a dual band wireless router which probablt has a larger WiFi range too.  I am debating on whether or not to buy the Apple Air Port Extreme Base Station or one of the top 3 Linksys E Seriers routers (E2500, E3200, E4200), since I have 2 iPads, an iMac, 2 iPhones, 2 Apple TVs, 2 Windows 7 laptops, 1 Windows XP desktop, XBox 360, Nintendo Wii, and 2 WiFi enablesd Blue Ray Players.  I saw that I was able to access all of the devices with the Air Port Extreme Base Station - great!    Air Port Extreme Base Station works great with all of the Apple devices, stops latency slow WiFi speeds and can have a USB hub attached to allow for a printer, multiple HDs [Time Machine Backups, YAY], etc.  I am leaning towards the Air Port Extreme Base Station, but have two reservations:
    (1) WEB BROWSER: I cannot administer the Air Port Extreme Base Station via a web browser and am forced to install the software and
    (2) REMOTE ADMINISTRATION: I cannot make any changes to the Air Port Extreme Base Station remotely, say if I'm at work, forgot to open a few ports and NAT/PAT, to access my computer.
I would buy the Air Port Extreme Base Station if I can at least get through one of these two reservations.
    Please help.

<Yes, the newer AirPort Extremes running 7.4.1+ firmware, can be administered from a remote location ... of course, you would still require the AirPort Utility to do so.>
I am looking to set up remote access to my Airport Extreme that is running the latest firmware. Can you describe what I need to do to do so?  I do not have a static IP so will have to use something like DynDNS I assume. My needs are pretty simple. From time to time my Airport drops out (I'm guessing after a power outage) and while the Cablevision modem restarts, my Airlort is often left flashing orange. This would be fine except that this is all at a weekend house that is 90 miles away and I need the wifi to be working so that I can access my Nest thermostat as well as my Insteon system for remote light management.

    Hello All,
Also no answer but am having the same problem.  All my catalogueing via folders is up in smoke and no external HDs (where I would normally directly store raw footage when importing) showing up on the iMovie interface.  It is a pain the arse to go back to the earlier version - why APPLE, pray tell, do you continue to lower expectations user-friendly functions. Shall try the option+open for a library but this too is extremely inconvenient if it works like iPhoto because you have to log out to log in to a new library whereas I just want to be able to see my multiple HDs directly from the iMovie menu and then the folders within folders I have layered in there - to make it easy to FIND STUFF. Wake up Apple, you are NOT meeting your customer's needs or desires.
Thanks to the posters who are helping the rest of us lost in the dark with possible solutions - free fix-its for Apple which they don't deserve.

  • Two HD with AirDisk.....

Been using an external USB drive for months on my Extreme (N) and it works fine.
Attached another USB drive with a HUB, both drives work fine and I can see each of them OK.
The problem I have is if I copy a large file it seems to pause the copying at around 20-23MB, it just seems to copy that size chunks at a time the pause is maybe for 3-5 seconds.
It does not matter which of the two drives I copy to the same, if I remove the hub and second drive it is fine. Just having the two drives attached, when the copying is being done only one drive is mounted and file transfer is to only one drive, not trying to copy files to both drives at the same time.
Anyone else have this problem or a solution.

  • Mac Book Pro 17" or Mac Pro?

Not sure which one is right for me. I am a photographer and graphic designer (print & web). I want to upgrade from my old iMac Power PC G5. Was thinking that I could get the Mac Book Pro with a separate display and use that for my retouching and InDesign files. That way I can also be mobile on photo shoots and use Capture One for tethered shooting. How can files be backed up by time machine on the MBP without an external hard drive? Is the MBP equal to the tower in capacity for hooking up external hardware such as drives or camera equipment? Is the MBP processor (2.66GHz Intel Core i7) as fast as the tower (Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores)? Is 8MB of memory enough on the MBP? Please point out any other pros or cons for either computer to help me make a decision.
    Thanks!

    Hi cindy,

That would work, but there are distinct differences. Quite honestly, the MP is much more capable than the MBP for heavy duty work such as yours, but as you know, at the cost of portability.
How can files be backed up by time machine on the MBP without an external hard drive?
You could partition the internal HD, but that would not protect against several things: if the HD died, both the main partition and the TM backup are gone; if the unit is lost/stolen/damaged, same thing. It's almost putting all your eggs in one basket.
Is the MBP equal to the tower in capacity for hooking up external hardware such as drives or camera equipment?
No, the MP has more connections and bays and potential for expandability.
Is the MBP processor (2.66GHz Intel Core i7) as fast as the tower (Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” (8 cores)?
In MacTracker benchmarks, the i7 MBP benchmark is 5423, while the MP with two 2.4 Quads is 12942, so the MP is more than twice as fast.
Is 8MB of memory enough on the MBP?
Given the limitations stated above, 8GB of RAM should be sufficient.
Please point out any other pros or cons for either computer to help me make a decision.
You covered many of the salient points, but potential for expansion is a big one for some people, maybe someday adding a BR burner, adding multiple HDs, etc. I am not familiar with current MPs, but I suspect that given the huge speed advantage, it's going to handle the same tasks much, much faster without breaking a sweat, while the MBP is likely to run rather hot even while lagging far behind.
I think the big decision is speed and expansion vs portability. Good luck to you.
(Was just browsing the MP specs some more; wow, that is one serious machine!)
