Multiple Oracle databases in Sun cluster 3.2 (without RAC setup)
There are 2 Sun SPARC (Sun Fire T2000) servers with Solaris 10 (05/09) OS and Sun Cluster 3.2 software. We need two different Oracle databases & instances (Oracle 10g R2 without RAC) for an application. The first database is for Production and need to be configured in the first node & Shared storage disk and need high availability. This database should run from the second node if the first node fails. The second database is for Quality/Test and it is prefered to be running in the Second node for better load distribution. This DB doesnt require any failover.
The shared storage is Sun SE 3510 FC and multiple LUNs can be created for different databases..
Is it possible to configure two different resource groups (one for Quality and other for Production) and make the first node primary for Production RG, and the second node primary for Quality RG and thus distributing the load on 2 servers ? If possible, what special configuration required in Sun OS and Cluster side ?
Appreciate if you can give some configuration procedures/documents for this multi-master cluster setup..
You can configure two resource groups, such as:
# clrg create -n node-a,node-b prod-rg
# clrg create -n node-b qa-rgand you configure the required resources (disk groups / file systems, logical host, oracle listener, oracle server) as described within
[http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2980?l=en&a=expand|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2980?l=en&a=expand]
Note that this is not really called a "multi-master" configuration - that has a specific meaning for a resource group (see [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/babefcja?l=en&a=view|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/babefcja?l=en&a=view] ) for details.
With Solaris Cluster all nodes part of a cluster are considered active and can host resource groups. You can have any number of resource groups running, where a subset runs one one node, another subset on other nodes. The nodelist property of the resource group defines where it can run, the first node in the list is the preferred primary.
You can even define resource group dependencies or affinities between the resource groups. Like you could define a negative affinity between qa-rg and prod-rg, such as if prod-rg needs to failover to node-b (since e.g. node-a died), it would offline qa-rg. Details for that kind of possibilities are described at [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/ch14_resources_admin-35?l=en&a=view|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4682/ch14_resources_admin-35?l=en&a=view].

TimesTen database in Sun Cluster environment
Hi,
Currently we have our application together with the TimesTen database installed at the customer on two different nodes (running on Sun Solaris 10). The second node acts as a backup to provide failover functionality, although right now only manual failover is supported.
We are now looking into a hot-standby / high availability solution using Sun Cluster software. As understood from the documentation, applications can be 'plugged-in' to the Sun Cluster using Agents to monitor the application. Sun Cluster Agents should be already available for certain applications such as:
# MySQL
# Oracle 9i, 10g (HA and RAC)
# Oracle 9iAS Application Server
# PostgreSQL
(See http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/cluster/faq.jsp#q_19)
Our question is whether Sun Cluster Agents are already (freely) available for TimesTen? If so, where to find them. If not, should we write a specific Agent separately for TimesTen or handle database problems from the application.
Does someone have any experience using TimesTen in a Sun Cluster environment?
Thanks in advance!Yes, we use 2-way replication, but we don't use cache connect. The replication is created like this on both servers:
create replication MYDB.REPSCHEME
element SERVER01_DS datastore
master MYDB on "SERVER01_REP"
transmit nondurable
subscriber MYDB on "SERVER02_REP"
element SERVER02_DS datastore
master MYDB on "SERVER02_REP"
transmit nondurable
subscriber MYDB on "SERVER01_REP"
store MYDB on "SERVER01_REP"
port 16004
failthreshold 500
store MYDB on "SERVER02_REP"
port 16004
failthreshold 500
The application runs on SERVER01 and is standby on SERVER02. If an invalid state is detected in the application, the application on SERVER01 is stopped and the application on SERVER02 is started.
In addition to this, we want to fail over if the database on the SERVER01 is in invalid state. What should we have monitored by the Clustering Agent to detect an invalid state in TT? -
Multiple Oracle Databases in a Single Windows Server
Hi all,
I have Windows Server System which has oracle database created.
My question is:-
How can i create multiple databases on the same server without affecting the first created database & i want to use the both databases at a time?
Please give the steps to do multiple databases in the same server if possible..
Thanks in advance,
Venkatesh JVenkateshj wrote:

Oracle scales by adding more servers to a single physical database. This is called Oracle RAC.
You want to add more physical databases to a single server - doing the exact opposite of what Oracle offers as a scalable solution.
Please give the steps to do multiple databases in the same server if possible..No special steps. Run DBCA and create a new database instance. In other words, the exact same steps followed for creating the 1st database on that server.
Also make sure you fully understand WHAT you are doing and the IMPLICATIONS of that. An Oracle database is not the same as a mySQL or SQL-Server database. An Oracle Schema is a logical database - and compares to what a mySQL/SQL-Server database is.
And a single Oracle database can contain 1000s of logical databases (schemas). Each with their own dedicated storage, own security, own resource profile, etc.
Oracle is not mySQL/SQL-Server.
Understanding the differences is important. -
Multiple oracle databases in Oracle 11gR2 RAC
Hello Oracle RAC Gurus,
I need your advice in my setup on Unix platform.
I am planning to build high availability databases with Oracle RAC 11gR2. These databases may have different versions 11.1.0.6 and 11.1.0.7 and 11.2.0.1 ..
Now from this [thread |http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1042187&tstart=0] earlier in this forum, I can understand I can have the same Oracle User for the database and one user for the CRS and ASM, and that CRS and ASM homes should be in a higher version of the oracle databases implemented, so the configuration could look like this:
CRS running on 11.2.0.1
ASM running on 11.2.0.1
DB1 running on 11.2.0.1 from ORACLE_HOME1
DB2 running on 11.1.0.7 from ORACLE_HOME2
My questions are:
1) Is this the best practice to have oracle databases in one RAC setup ?
2) Do I need a different oracle inventory for each version with different oracle inventory path ?
3) Would this setup will have patching difficulties and disadvantages ?
4) If I want to do the Data guard setup for this implementation, shall I perform the usual RAC/RAC setup or are there any consideration I have to put in mind?
Kindly advice,
Regards,
C1) Is this the best practice to have oracle databases in one RAC setup ?
We have 11.2 infrastructure with 11.2 and 10.2.0.4 databases running from 2 db homes.
2) Do I need a different oracle inventory for each version with different oracle inventory path ?
Only one inventory
3) Would this setup will have patching difficulties and disadvantages ?
Less databases makes it less complicated. Many argue that a cluster should only have one db. We've patched our multi version environment without any issues.
4) If I want to do the Data guard setup for this implementation, shall I perform the usual RAC/RAC setup or are there any consideration I have to put in mind?
A RAC to RAC dataguard setup should work fine. Your standby should be indentical to your primary.

Problem with Oracle 9i client to access multiple oracle databases
I am having problem setting up oracle client 9i to access multiple oracle db. When I finish installing Oracle 8.x client, I simply replace the tnsnames.ora that the installation created with the ones that I have. I can access three different databases. I only need to add three diffrent entries in the tnsnames.ora file. I cannot be able to do this with Oracle 9i client. I follow the instruction from the CD installation to use local naming method. It appears that Oracle client try to create multiple entries on my tnsnames.ora file but I can only be able to access one db.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks! HDthe old tnsnames.ora is working with Oracle 8 client. The new tnsnames.ora (if I use the Oracle Net config) have two entries, one is dev and the other is prod.
Thanks! -
Is possible Oracle Database on Windows Cluster without FailSafe ???
Hi Guys,
I have one doubt that can we have Active/Passive Oracle Database on Windows (2k3/2k8) Cluster without installing FailSafe Software ???
Can we have the .bat Scripts for resource moving from Active Node to Passive Node in case of failure, like the way we have in Unix environments...
yours feedback would be appreciated...

Hi guys,

I managed to create 2 databases with 2 different ORACLE_SID, (e.g. A & B)
my question is, is it possible to have both of this Databases mounted and opened??
here is the step i have done so far:
- go to /ORACLE_HOME/bin
- I started my one and only LISTENER - ./lsnrctl start LISTENER
- ORACLE_SID=A
- ./sqlplus / as sysdba
- SQL>STARTUP
Everything went well, until i set another ORACLE_SID (in another terminal) to ORACLE_SID=B, and when i tried to start it up using SQLPLUS, i get this "Segmentation Fault - core dumped".
It seems like i start the 2nd database wrongly, is there proper way to do this?
i need the 2 databases (SID A & SID B) to be running concurrently.

Running Oracle database 10g and 11g on same 5 RAC nodes
Hello Gurus,
Could any body throw light if I can install and sucessfully run Oracle database 10g and 11g on the same Oracle RAC installation setup. My setup is below
Number of nodes-5
OS- windows 2003 or RHEL5
storage- DELL EMC SAN
Clusterware- oracle version11g
File system-Automatic storage management(ASM)
After I successfully setup clusterware,ASM on the nodes,I would want to install 11g database on all 5 nodes .
Then Install 10g database on only 3 of the nodes using the same clusterware.
What are your views on the same.
Also FYI... as per metalink node 220970.1(RAC: Frequently Asked Questions) one can do such a setup.
what iam looking for is practical experience if anyone has implemented this in production system,if yes any issues faced and how tough it is to support.
Thanks,
ImtiyazYou could run an 11g database and 10g database on the same cluster as long as you use Clusterware 11g.
The administration aspect will drastically change according to the platform you run on. As of now, it appears you don't know whether it will be Linux or Windows.
It would be practical to support the same database release. -

Anatoly S. ZiminNormally you use AVS to replicate data from one Solaris Cluster to another. Can you just clarify whether you are replicating to another cluster or trying to do it between a single cluster's nodes? If it is the latter, then this is not something that Sun officially support (IIRC) - rather it is something that has been developed in the open source community. As such it will not be documented in the Sun main SC documentation set. Furthermore, support and or questions for it should be directed to the author of the module.

Multiple Oracle databases on Single host
Hi Gurus,
I am new to SAP World. We are planning to install multiple SAP systems (ECC/BW/SRM/XI) on a single host with Oracle 11.2.0.2. As per SAP instguide, the Oracle RDBMS software should be owned by ora<SID>:dba. So we are planning to install the oracle software for the first dev system ERD under 'oraerd:dba' id. And the next will be under 'orabwd:dba' and the third under 'orasrd:dba'.
My questions is, instead of having multiple ORACLE_HOME's owned by individual id's, can I have one consolidated Oracle_Home owned by 'oracle:dba' which then controls all the oracle db's and its datafiles.
I know there is a SAP Note to do this for Oracle RAC (prd is being planned this way), but can we do the same for Single instance also.
Best Regards
ShivShivaspo wrote:
Hi Orkun,
> Thanks for your reply. Its a must or its just better to have under individual O_H. The reason we were looking to out all under 'oracle' was that our DR site for the prod is going to be single instance physical standby using DG. SAP recommends to have the OS user on the DR host to be oracle, so that there are no issues with permissios for log shipping.

Hi Shiv,
Technically, there's no restriction to configure your system, by this way. But from SAP point of view; at the first step, because the the installation is not completed as referred by SAP installation guide, you will not able to get support by SAP. For the instance, if you face with a problem during the productive, SAP may not support your installation.
Secondly, you may face with the problems at the database upgrades and applying patches. For example, you need to stop all the databases when you decided to patch one of them.
I can count many restrictions about this issue. As a summary, from technical way, it is possible to have one Oracle home, but it is strongly recommended to have different Oracle home folders for each Oracle installation.

Multiple oracle database on single server
Hi,
In our organization, we are going to install, SRM, BW and XI on a single server, each going to use its own database.
So, in that case, will the listener and listener port for all the three database will be the same, or we need to define it during the installation.
Please help me in this regard.
Thanks and Regards,
Sailesh KHi Sailesh,
The best option is different binaries (Oracle & Sap), different Filesystems and different ports (Listener, msserver, gw, and so on) for every system you install. And, of course, different system numbers!

I'd like to know how to configure listener in this kind of envirnmonent.
a. use two listener and different ports
b. use same listener but different ports
c. use same listener and same port
Which is the correct mothed?
And, after installation, there seem three set of profiles of listten, one for ERP, one for SLM, and the other for OS?(%windir%system32), which one is functional?
Please advise.
Thanks a lot.
Regards,
AlexHi,
standard installation is creating new configs for listener for each instance.
I would recommend to use one listener per each instance.
YOU CAN NOT HAVE one port number for two differnet systems!
If you want to use one listener than you must adapt tnsnames.ora, listener.ora and ensure that both systems will use different port numbers.
For example PORT= 15<system number>
